Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Kai, Jay, Cole, and Zane, Ninjago’s Masters of Spinjitzu.

Ninja, Heroes, Brothers. These two well known teams of the ninja garb have been fighting for their homes and loved ones for decades. They’ve mastered martial arts, ninja weaponry, and the mystic arts but today they face their greatest test yet in a 4v4 all out fight to the death. Will the Ninja Turtles unleash a Shell Shock of Turtle Power and slice The LEGO Ninja into pieces, or will the Spinjitzu masters leave the competition’s heads spinning with a serving of turtle soup? Let’s find out!

Before We Start…

Rather than making a composite of the various incarnations of the TMNT, this blog will instead analyze them individually in a gauntlet style approach, seeing how well each of the main versions of the Turtles fare against the Ninja in a 4v4 match (so no Jennika, Lloyd, Nya, etc.). With that in mind, the blog will primarily focus on the versions heavily featured during the Battle Nexus comic event, as they’re among the most prominent incarnations and generally scale to a lot of the same things at a baseline (aside from Rise, which upscales them instead). With that in mind, these are our combatants:

  • Mirage Studios
  • 1987
  • TMNT Adventures
  • 2003
  • IDW
  • 2012
  • Rise

This would also technically include the film quadrilogy and Mutant Mayhem, but they scale to nothing and don’t do enough to be in the conversation. We’re not wasting any time for those two they’re just cooked, we’re sorry.

As for the Ninja, they’ll be running with the same rules Kai was under last time, with Ninjago’s original continuity as the main focus and its side material as supporting evidence, while ignoring the alternate continuity of The LEGO Ninjago Movie.

Additionally, no cross-scaling across different franchises will be considered for either team, though canonical crossovers (such as the Turtles’ various encounters with Miyamoto Usagi) will have their own feats used. Both series have a habit of introducing various different arsenals, abilities or what have you for a volume or season only for that thing to be gone by the next installment. So for this debate, we’ll account for any weapon or ability that is tied to major story beats of both series, with anything not part of their baseline kit being acknowledged as such.

Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles

Background

“COWABUNGA!”

Their story is one that has been told many times in many ways, passed down from one generation to the next since 1984, but at their very core one thing is very clear: Mutated by a mysterious Ooze and raised by a kindly rat, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have turned the way of the ninja into an art form. That’s why they are called Martial Arts, and it’s perhaps what Master Splinter (and sometimes April O’Neil depending on the continuity) had in mind when the time came to name them.

Leonardo, the leader in blue.

Donatello, who does machines.

Raphael, the one with attitude.

And Michelangelo, the party dude.

Deep in the bowels of New York, these heroes in a half shell have saved the world from the shadows and battle with their mortal foe known as the Shredder, but that only scratches the surface of what they’ve done: From the Frank Miller and Jack Kirby inspired indie 1984 Mirage comic book, the saturday morning adventures of 1987, the environmentalist globe trotting journeys of Archie, the renewed more comic aligned storyline of 2003, the extensive and character packed happenings of IDW and the experimental colorful disadventures of Rise, these heroes in a half shell have gone through almost anything.

But throughout all their adventures, and despite all their many victories, one problem always seems to linger around them: Their own nature as Mutants. Not only creating a disconnect between themselves and the outside world that fears and loathes them, but also within themselves as the only members of their kind. Trouble always seems to find them even at their most calm moments, and the solutions to the problems aren’t always the cleanest, as they have come to conflict many times about what to do in certain situations, and sometimes drift apart entirely due to these resentments or simple passage of time.

Despite all of this, however, they are a family through and through. No matter the problem, they will always stick together against anything that might threaten not only them, but the bonds they have made with the people that love them as they are. Their master and father Splinter, their older sister figure April O’Neil, their not always bright but always present friend Casey Jones, and their many other friends, mutant or otherwise, make all of it worth it.

Because even when life becomes a living shell, they still love being a turtle.

Experience & Skill

Across many, if not all mainline iterations, are trained in the ways of the ninja at an incredibly early age. Mirage’s Turtles are second to none in this regard, having been trained in combat for 13 years prior to their mission to take down the Shredder, with the Turtles spending the next 15 (yes they’re basically in their thirties) training and fighting on the regular by the time of Volume 4. In the 2003 series, Splinter started training the turtles for 15 years, sometimes even hours without rest. We see many of Splinter’s lessons in real time as the series go on, which while versatile, all boil down to core ninjutsu traits, such as stealth, deception, acrobatics, honing senses, fighting at a steep disadvantage, and various forms of martial arts; both with their iconic weapons and unarmed.

While these iterations can vary on strategy, a good consistent trait the turtles have as fighters is their resourcefulness, which helps since they have to adapt to all kinds of absurd and often otherworldly scenarios. All of Mirage’s Turtles are trained to effectively fight even when blinded (and 2003’s can do the same even against cloaked enemies), and Raph once took down a foot ninja while his leg was hanging from a chain on the ceiling. Within the 2003 continuity, when the turtles were captured by Triceratons without their weapons, they were able to improvise with cleaning items, specifically a plunger, scrub brush, broom, and spoons, to still combat and defeat Triceraton soldiers, and were able to make makeshift their own weapons with primitive objects when stuck in an alternate dimension. Even the Turtlebot, an android designed with the fighting styles of all the turtles and with faster reflexes, was defeated easily once the team fought by trading their own weapons so it couldn’t predict their moves.

Funny enough, the ‘87 Turtles are a great example of resourcefulness too, as direct use of their weapons in combat was not allowed due to censorship laws at the time, meaning they had to weaponize the environment or an enemy’s own attack. This includes times such as Leo using his blades to cut a cage open so the turtles can use it to trap foot clan members, Donnie throwing his bo staff to knock things down and take out foes like Bebop and Rocksteady, Mikey uses his nunchucks to send water at foes to make them slip, or Raph using his Sais to trap foes by using the walls of the building. They can also use their weapons to disarm enemies of their own, like the time Leo and Raph threw their weapons to disarm Bebop and Rocksteady. Even without weapons, Mikey in the Archie comics managed to pull off a Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. Guess all those hours playing video games came in handy after all!

Donatello is of course the brains of the group, and has shown that not just through his various inventions, but also how quickly he can come up with those plans. In 2003, these include finding out how to make an alien rifle self-destruct within seconds and form an escape plan from it, deducing the chemical composition of an alien floor wax to mix it with soot and moisture to make a smoke bomb, or making an EMP on the fly through his laptop and a roller coaster. While not done on the fly, he was even able to figure out how to liquify specialized crystals by making a specific high-frequency sonic pitch, which ended up being a cure to an entire mutated population.

This aspect of theirs has been particularly useful against a very, very large range of enemies and threats, from petty street gangs and crooks to intergalactic wars, conflicts of the mystic arts, several journeys across space time, meetings with all kinds of mythical creatures, meetings with other heroes from across the multiverse, meetings with themselves across the multiverse, and many, many more things from 40+ years of adventures and battles. And it’s this aspect of theirs that has been able to help keep up with seemingly endless streams of enemies one after the other, regardless of what version you are talking about, one thing is very clear and it’s that the Turtles never get a break.

In IDW’s comics, the Turtles mastered a multitude of martial arts from Master Splinter, a former skilled Foot Clan soldier. Based on every martial art mentioned, the turtles should know: Tai Chi, Kali, Savate, Wing-Chun, Taekwondo, Aikido, Jujistu, Karate, and Kenjustu, the latter of which is actually a samurai fighting style. Leonardo is so experienced in his style that both Shredder and Splinter see him fit to be a Chunin, a high ranking ninja that is responsible for the low level ninja. Even lacking the same amount of training compared to the Turtles, Raphael was able to completely catch up to the other Turtles in skill at the beginning of the series, keeping up with veteran ninjas like Alopex. Donatello is the genius obviously, developing a multitude of strategies, technology and the risks the other turtles often won’t; like working with the Shredder to attack Burnow Island after General Krang launched the Technodrome. Michelangelo may seem like the party dude often, however he is actually described as having the most raw talent compared to his brothers, impressing characters with decades of experience like the Shredder. In fact, he actually does the best against Master Splinter in a fight.

Speaking of Splinter, in the finale of the ‘87 series, Splinter proclaimed that the TMNT were nothing short of his equal, and there was none superior to them in terms of skill. Leo’s even matched Lotus, who was stated by Splinter to have mastered ninja combat at the age of ten. In the Archie comics, Leo’s swordsmanship is said to be unmatched, and Donnie can disarm any adversary, which he’s proven against Leo himself, funnily enough, and Raph managed to throw one of his sais and stab a person’s gun. 2003 Raph has done this also, and Donatello later on kicked Raph’s sai from behind so his brother can grab his weapons back.

Equipment

Shared

Katanas

Quite literally straight and to the point. A classic weapon to suit Leonardo’s traditional honor bound ways. In addition to being Leonardo’s weapon of choice in all incarnations, Mirage’s Raphael has been shown to bring swords on a handful of occasions.

Twin Sai

As much as Raphael loves going on the offensive, his Sai are actually well designed to catch most blades coming his way, which supposedly no sword on Earth can withstand. That being said, he’s not afraid to use them as aggressively as he wants, whether as a projectile or a very spiky set of metal knuckles. They’re also useful for other methods like picking locks.

Bo-Staff

It’s easy to think a simple stick is the weak link of the four main weapons, but it’s actually very versatile in practice. It obviously offers the best range, but it’s also practical in a lot of ways; it aids Donnie’s acrobatics, is great for knocking foes off balance, and he can even use it to bat attacks back to sender. In IDW, Donnie developed a Carbon-Fiber version that can unleash electrical charges, and 2012 also has a version of the staff where it has a sharp blade at the top used to stab enemies.

Nunchaku

You’re more than familiar with the confusion people have with Mikey being the one bestowed this. It’s a very common (yet surface level) joke to call these weapons useless, but that’s selling Mikey incredibly short. The fact that they are usually seen as a joke should make Mikey’s efficiency with them all the more impressive. In fact, Mikey might be the best wilder of nunchucks since Bruce Lee, and he will happily prove his superiority to other fellow chuckers if he happens to come across one. In 2012 he has a variant that has a blade and chain he uses for attacks or a grappling hook. They can also be used in other ways, like acting as springboard for his brothers or to slide down railings.

Ninja Stars

The standard ninja projectile, useful for piercing a foe at long range with deadly accuracy. The ‘87 Turtles also carry an explosive variant that can blast through solid metal, specifically a foot of titanium. 2003 had Donatello develop electro countershock versions to instantly short circuit technology, but can still be used to deliver powerful shocks to regular foes too.

Turtle Line

Primarily used by Michelangelo in 87 and IDW, the turtle line allows Mikey to attack from a distance, and even up close like choking out opponents.

Smoke Bombs

The ninja all also hold onto smoke bombs 24/7, allowing them to get the drop on their enemies and disappear from sight when caught off guard

Blades

On top of their base weapons, each turtle also generally carries blades that are smaller that can be pulled out on their enemies with the element of surprise.

Climbing Claws

These allow the Turtles to scale the sides of buildings while out on patrol, being used by various incarnations since the Turtles’ origin.

Grappling Hook

As a team, the turtles usually have at least one grappling hook that they can use to cling to ceilings and fly out of sticky situations. While it is mainly used as a climbing tool, it has shown to be effective as a weapon such as Mikey using it a lot throughout the 1987 Cartoon and is strong enough it can stop the turtle van to a halt once it grabbed onto something.

Bow & Arrow

While rarely used, the Turtles have used a bow and arrow on occasion, with mainly Leonardo (both Mirage and 2012) has used it to go hunting or in battle. Mike has also used them before, showing some accuracy with it outside of combat.

Turtle Comms

Compact. Hi-tech. Marketable! The turtle comms have been in the series for ages across most iterations and basically act as early cell phones (before cell phones were even a thing in 87’s case). Not only are they good for basic communication, but they often have a tracking device to help them meet up should they get separated. While the Mirage Turtles lack the more fleshed out versions from later entries, they have a radio and commlinks that work similarly enough. In the 87 Cartoons they are also able to emit a high fragrance that was powerful enough to mess with robots such as MetalHead by messing up his memory bank.

Disguises

From Clark Kent to Peter Parker, every superhero needs a way to stay hidden in plain sight, although the turtles’ reasons usually relate to the fact that they are mutants and are often shunned and feared by society. Their disguises vary from iteration (or even episode to episode), but their general purpose is the same; somehow, miraculously, hide four giant green human-turtle freaks from the public eye which, funny enough, always works. The disguises are so good that even a machine was tricked by it which the turtles used to slip by.

Spacesuits

Given that the turtles have to travel to space in many continuities, almost all of them have space suits prepared for the occasion.

Mirage

Armored Car

Unlike the more on-brand vans used by many of their adaptations, the Mirage Turtles wound up driving in an armored car for some of their later adventures, taken after it was abandoned by its (very dead) previous owners.

Aikuchi

Leonardo’s personal knife, primarily used when he attempted to go hunting after the Turtles initially left New York.

Pocket Knife

When teaching Cha Ocha a lesson in humility, Leonardo chose to fight him with a pocket knife rather than engaging him in a proper sword duel. Not only did Leo win, he broke his sword with it and chose to scar him as a sign of his failure.

Gravatic Equalizer

Drawn into creation by King Kirby himself to assist Donatello, the Gravatic Equalizer effectively removes the gravity of anything it blasts, sending it flying into the air helplessly. It can be fired about 9 times before running out of juice, at which point Don used it as a makeshift club.

Laser Rifle

A laser blaster Don used against Baxter Stockman’s robotic body, melting it and the surrounding area when its remnants were possessing living hosts, and later simply to kill him after realizing there wasn’t a point to keeping him alive. While it’s incredibly powerful, it does have a limited amount of charge, only getting a single shot out before being rendered unusable the first time it was used.

Piloted Semi-Autonymous
Mechanical Exo-Shell

After being shrunk down for the foreseeable future, Don used a robot suit in his image to continue fighting akin to his normal self. Alongside showing similar combat prowess to his usual showings, it’s able to continue fighting even if taking significant damage like losing its head.

Shredder Suit
(Urban Legends)

As the culmination of his training with the Foot Clan, when the time called for it Raphael was thrust upon the role of the Shredder himself, competing with many other candidates for it. As the Shredder, he had access to a kit even deadlier than his usual fare, though he primarily focuses on Shredder’s traditional armblades, with which he absolutely tears up the skin of his foes. In this suit, he was able to kill 50 mobsters in one night and fare extremely well in battles alongside his brothers.

1987

Turtle Van

Donatello’s pride and joy. Made from a regular van, it’s since been modified to shell back, equipped with cameras for surveillance, a nifty submarine mode, and much more! It can condense itself to fit in tight areas, boost its speed, emit a smokescreen, launch a parachute, throw mud missiles, shoot water blasters from the front, and has ejection, catapult, and grappling hook features.

Turtle Blimp

When the turtles need to take to the skies they use the Turtle Blimp! Along with the giant logo showing who owns the blimp, the turtles use the blimp when they need to recon from above and gather info on Shredder or Krang. Another notable thing with the blimp is that it has a detachable glider which the turtles can unplug and use anytime with it coming with sneezing gas which they can drop bombs on top of enemies.

Modified Skateboards

When the turtles don’t want to go into the sky, they can go through the sewers with their skateboards. However unlike normal skateboards, these ones are modified by Donnie’s design so they can go faster than normal with the giant fans on the back. Mikey’s Cheapskate can even run on autopilot, seemingly forever according to Leo.

Hang Gliders

Look! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s a flying turtle with their hang gliders!

Rafts

When the turtles need to go through the seas they can use their turtle raft. Along with being another form of transportation it also comes equipped with plungers they can use to grab onto foes or trap them or a net they can send out to immobilize foot soldiers.

Turtle Motorcycle

Everyone needs a cool motorcycle, even a turtle!

Jetpack

A singular jetpack that Donnie invented to keep a Turtle airborne for hours. Only one, for some reason.

Food Revivifier

A device that regresses the age of food, turning rotten bananas ripe again… at least that was its intended purpose. As it turns out, this machine regresses the age of all biological life, should they get blasted by it, physically and mentally. However, the effects can be reversed, so long as the affected party comes into contact with saltwater.

Personality Modifier

A device that Donatello has yet to dispose of because he’s sick in the head. True to its name, its purpose is to forcefully change someone’s personality. Like when Leonardo was turned into a party dude, or when Raphael became so overly nice, that he helped literally everyone around him, regardless of context.

Time Stopper

What is probably the most toonforce invention across any of the Donatellos, the turtle of purple was able to create the Time Stopper Ray!  When someone or something is hit with the ray, time completely stops for them. Even if the person hit with it is moving or even floating they will still be completely frozen in time, unable to move.

Cyber Suits

Stolen from an alien ship, these suits are basically space Titans! When worn, the suits turn the turtles into Gundam-like kaijus. Although they have weapons built in, only Raphael and Donatello found out how they work, and additionally, these suits can only withstand so much damage before they revert back to their original state.

Holograms

(This the best image we got man idk)

The turtles have access to holograms that are as identical to the originals. Even to the point that they got mistaken as the real turtles which allowed the four to jump the villain.

Virtual Reality Machine

In hopes of helping the turtles train better, Donnie was able to create a Virtual Reality Machine! With the machine, the turtles can plug in their brains with the headsets and make it so they go into the game. Maybe Donatello watched too much SAO…

Turtle Capsule

The turtle capsule is another vehicle the turtles use which comes equipped with laser canons and rockets they can shoot with.

Shrink Ray

To fulfill the “shrink down and enter another person’s body” trope that the original show somehow missed, Donatello invents a device that shrunk the TMNT down to accomplish just that.

Modified Taser

You ever think a regular taser just isn’t good enough to take New York crooks down? Well Donnie did as well and modified a taser that shoots out a giant electrical shock!

Microwave Transmitter

In an attempt to trick Krang, Donnie has a Microwave transmitter that is able to mess with tv frequencies. With it Donnie was able to trick Krang by making him think he’s watching a news broadcast instead of his favorite drama. This is quite impressive given The Technodrone, the place Krang was watching his show, is in the center of the earth,

Plasma Buzzsaw

Because Donatello didn’t have enough stuff already, he also went through a Batman phase, where he turned his turtle comm into a buzzsaw that can cut through streetlights like nothing.

Solar Tracker

As the name implies, Donnie has a solar tracker which he can use to track where solar energy is coming from.

White Noise Filters

Developed by Donnie, these earbuds filter out radio frequencies, which he, Leo, and Raph used to tune out a broadcast from WOOF Station. Convenient, since Shredder was using it to control the minds of everyone listening to it.

Pandimensional Portal

Probably one of Donnie’s greatest inventions is his Pandimensional Portal. With this the turtles are able to open a portal to just about any dimension they want, be it Dimension X, a Fairy Tale land, or the land of Usagi. And a fun fact is that it’s completely portable, being able to shrink down and get moved.

Portal Ray

Donnie creates a Portal Projector that can travel into any dimension like the 2012 world or the original Prime Turtles dimension.

Metal Head

In the 87 world, Metal Head was a robot created by Krang to destroy the turtles, which was done by programming them with the fighting abilities of all four of the turtles. While it was successful in stopping a sick TMNT, in the same episode Donnie was able to program the robot to their side. Metal Head along with his ninja skills is also equipped with laser cannons and could stretch out his arm to grab things out of his foes hands, proving to be a nice ally for the turtles.

Time Dimensional Sword

Created by an alien ore, Shredder was able to obtain two swords that could cut holes through time. With just a thought of the specific point in time, the sword could create a passageway to that time that anyone can hop in and out of. These aren’t just little holes either, the holes the sword can make could be as big as the size of the Technodrone. While they might seem like just a way of transportation, they have been used offensively as well, such as the time Shredder left Leo in the past by closing the portal behind him. There’s also a specific interaction that could happen if the two swords clash along with their time portals, as anyone in the center of it would be stuck in limbo and be stuck in a state of going nowhere and anywhere. Even if they were to somehow escape, themselves would still be in limbo and not fully there. While the weapon is primarily used by Shredder, Leo was able to obtain one of the blades and use it against Shedder before having it taken away due to everyone’s safety.

Archie

Turnstone

An extraterrestrial object which can transform anything into what the user wants. It’s described as being able to “gain control of an entire dimension” (whatever the hell that means…). It eventually found its way in Donatello’s hands, and he used it to become one with the universe. Every atom, every molecule, every life, every breath, and every death. In his hands, he’s enlarged a black hole, and when he found himself trapped in said black hole (more on that in a second), Samath used it to teleport him out and then collapse it.

The major downside being that the stone ended up driving Donnie mad. He himself notes he couldn’t control it, and would have eventually destroyed the universe with it.

2003

Shell Cells

A nifty communication device for the Turtles and their allies, armed with tracking chips in case they need to reach back to each other.

Battle Shell

An armored car made by Donatello, and one of the main sources of transportation for this incarnation of the Turtles. While that’s useful in its own way, it’s kitted out with a bunch of different tools for the job. Take for example a tracker that can lock down unique power signatures of nanobot tech, engine boosters to help tilt it in any direction it needs, missiles, and a grappling hook to stop itself. Even outside of its arsenal, the Battle Shell has a remote control system to automatically travel to any signals it can receive, can help push down a several ton garbage mech, and can withstand fire and lasers, making it an effective weapon in its own right.

Shell Cycle

Raphael’s favorite way to go around is his beauty of a bike, painted red like him. There’s nothing much the bike has over other gear, beyond rocket boosts and looking sick as hell in the opening song. Donnie later built his own and some for everyone else, which have side-cars to help carry others alongside them.

Flying Hoverboard

Built from Utrom technology by Donnie, this sweet ride is a favorite of Michelangelo, used to maneuver quickly and still being able to fight similarly speeding enemies.

Sewer Sliders

A hovercraft to get around the sewers the turtles love to call home. It has the typical high speed you expect, but it also comes with a stealth mode and flashlights to see in the dark. Each turtle got their own version that’s similar known as Shell Sleds, designed and colored for each.

Turtle Tunneler

What happens when you need to go deeper than the sewers? Call the Turtle Tunneler! Developed by Donatello of course, this is equipped with a massive drill to continuously through bedrock, is resistant to lava for prolonged periods of time, and has an infrared scanner. It was even this weapon that killed an alternate future version of Ch’rell.

Shell Sub

An underwater submarine for traversal into the deepest depths. It’s usually for exploration, but if enemies strike on water, just fire torpedoes and leave behind depth charges to take care of it.

Turtle Copter

An overhauled military helicopter to take to the skies. Stolen from Agent Bishop, Donnie kept and modified it, enhancing its flying speed.

Turtle Taxi

Perhaps inconspicuous, but don’t judge a car by its cover. The Turtle Taxi isn’t just another method of transportation, but it also comes with jet engines and retractable armor. The tires can turn sideways to drive sideways, it has a grappling line and a fire extinguisher, and the signage can extend and flip the taxi back up if needed

Sewer Sled

Developed to travel on water, the Sewer Sled has jet boosters for enhanced speed

Amulet of the Acolytes

Gifted by the Ninja Tribunal during The Lost Episodes, these artifacts help the turtles focus and amplify their chi for various effects, including transformation. They were destroyed towards the end of the season following the defeat of Tengu Shredder, but will be included for the full scope of their powers. See Chi Manipulation and Dragons for what specifically they get from this.

Mystic Weapons

The Spirit Forge can give powerful weapons to those worthy, to strike enemies physically and metaphysically. Mikey, Donnie, and Raph all got a great deal from this; Inazuma, which commands lightning from the heavens. Byakko, the hungry ghost who calls the cleaving wind. Banrai, which can shatter mountains with its thunder. While Leo didn’t get a weapon (likely due to his already great Chi), he took the weapon Gunshin from his friend Faraji after their supposed death, commanding the white flame of the dragon king. Through focusing their Chi, these weapons can be used to great effect, most consistent being all of them can fire energy beams at foes. Beyond that, Banrai can be used to turn Raphael into a spinning energy saw, deflect enemy projectiles, or fire energy through the ground. Byakko can form small tornadoes, and Gunshin can keep closing portals open for a time

Future Weaponry

To get with the times after they found themselves in the future, the TMNT conjure weaponry from their thoughts, which is a direct upgrade over their regular ones in every way. Leonardo’s swords can fire energy slashes that cut through concrete and be spun fast enough to vaporize water. Michelangelo’s nunchucks can extend and retract far greater lengths and be spun around to shred enemy weaponry or block projectiles. Donatello’s bo-staff can create concussive sound waves, produce sound frequencies, fire energy blasts, and electrocute people. Raphael’s sais can return to his hand when thrown, be combined to cut through any object, be charged with energy to cause explosions, or make an energy shockwave. All of them are also equipped with special gear that provides them with a personal atmosphere, gravity regulators, and a universal translation device. This includes other functions like shooting tracking devices or scanning a ship for life forms.

Cybernaut Equipment

When working in Cyberspace to get Master Splinter’s bits back, the Turtles utilized gear native to the digital world. These included specialized armor, weapons, and vehicles made to work within their new setting, letting the four of them combat foes, teleport across the digital world, and think of any equipment that helps. All of this equipment is exclusively within Cyberspace, however, with the Turtles noting how they’re only able to do what they do because its logic is so inherently different from a normal battlefield.

IDW

Turtle Van

An upgraded Earth Defense Force Vehicle, it’s equipped with sensors, infrared, anti-gravity and cloaking.

Anti-Gravity Gauntlet

Invented by Donnie’s friend, Harold, the Anti-Gravity Gauntlet allows someone to move stuff like cars, and even people. It can also push them back with great force.

Anti-Phasing Weapons

When fighting the Silver Phantoms, thanks to Donnie and Harold, the Turtles were given weapons that can bypass sub-atomic phasing.

Dimension-X Weapons

During their second visit to Dimension X for the Trial of Krang, the Turtles, besides Donnie, were given energy coated versions of their signature weapons, as well as jetpacks, as seen in the image above.

Ghostbuster Weapons

In the 2nd TMNT/Ghostbusters crossovers, the Turtles get proton versions of their weapons. This allows them to harm ghosts from Ghostbusters….. before they were ultimately destroyed in the same issue.

2012

T Phone

T Phones are shell shaped phones that allow the Turtles to call each other, hack into any government or Krang technology, and can even self-destruct.

Metalhead

Metalhead was created by Donatello with some salvage Krang tech and sewer parts. Metalhead is built with scanners, laser arm gun, rocket hands, and a flamethrower, and is programmed to assist the Turtles.

Spy Roaches

Donatello created the Spy Roaches to spy on the Krang or the Foot Clan and has the Spy Roaches camera linked into Donnie’s T Phone.

Shellraiser

Donatello turns Leatherhead’s old subway train into the Shellraiser. The Shellraiser is equipped with smoke screens, pizza grease trails, a garbage cannon, a manhole cover cannon, and even carries a stealth bike.

Turtle Wings

Turtles have mechanical wings that allow them to soar through the city.

DNA Scanners

Donnie’s DNA Scanner allows him to track down any mutagen or mutants.

Turtle Mech

Donatello creates the Turtle Mech which can only be piloted with 4 people. The Turtle Mech can breathe fire, throw toxic waste bombs, grapple onto buildings, and is capable enough to fight off Krang Prime.

The Party Wagon

Donatello uses Krang technology to make the Party Wagon into a Battle Wagon. While it’s not as armored as the Shellraiser, it has way more variety of weapons like the soda cannons, a deerhead flamethrower, and stink bombs.

Turtle Blimp

Created by Donatello to carry the turtles to fly to Dimension X. It’s loaded with stink balls

Astro Suits

Thanks to The Fugitoid the Turtles are equipped with Astro Suits that come with gravity boots, laser guns, and high tech weapons ranging from new weapons, to enhanced versions of their old equipment. The Astra suits helped the turtles survive the extreme colds of planets with temperatures as low as -180 degrees celcius, and provide oxygen that lets them survive in oxygenless environments such as, well, space.

Astro Staff

Donnie’s Astro Staff is a much bigger upgrade to his traditional Bo Staff compared to the rest of the Turtles’ Astro Weapons. It comes with technology that can track enemies or objects, a flashlight when exploring dark areas, and even electrical shocks.

Grappling Harnesses

Donnie makes a grapple-type backpack called the Grappling Harnesses which allows the Turtles to swing around buildings (basically like AOT).

Spectro Blasters

After getting scans on Hot Head (Kavaxas) Donnie creates the Spectro Blasters which can take down supernatural entities like Kavaxas or Ghosts.

Donatello’s Mystical
Seal of Protection

Thanks to Burnett, Donnie gets a Mystical Seal of Protection on his staff which can do heavy damage to  vampires but only works if the person wielding it has faith.

LARP Suits

It’s the ACTUAL definition of LARP, just say Poser.

After playing a game of LARP (lol) the Turtles created their own suits of the game. With th else suits they were granted weapons such as

  • Bows
  • Shields
  • And a Magic stick

Microfission Omni-Disintegrator

Created by the Kraang, and used by Donnie to destroy portals, this gun can destroy anything at a subatomic level.

Turtle Sub

A submarine created by Donnie to swim underwater. It is equipped with torpedoes

Rise

Leonardo’s Mystic Odachi

Stolen from Baron Draxum’s lair, Leonardo in Rise of the TMNT wields a Mystic Odachi. Unlike Leonardo’s usual weapons, this sword possesses the ability to open portals. These portals are tunnels which connect two places in space-time and suck in Leonardo, or whatever he brings with him, to quickly skip distances. It took Leo a long time to fully get the hang of this, but he eventually learned how to open multiple or even cut things apart by closing portals on them.

Michelangelo’s Kusari-Fundo

Michelangelo’s weapon of choice in Rise is the Kusari-Fundo. Replacing his standard nunchucks, Mikey wields a flaming flail with a seemingly never ending chain. While it took some getting used to, the Kusari-Fundo proved incredibly capable, being able to wrap around targets, set things ablaze, superheat objects, or even fly around with a mind of its own.

Raphael’s Tonfa

Raphael’s Rise weapons are a pair of mystic Tonfa. A nice change of pace from his usual style, these weapons are far more defensive. Their main ability is to form a red forcefield around Raphael which can be reshaped and molded in any way he needs. He’s used these to soften incoming blows or further enhance his own strength, grow in size, and even add more limbs to his body.

Donatello’s Tech

Donatello possesses an abundance of weapons and general equipment which he calls DonnieTech. There’s a lot to mention, which will be listed below.

Tech-Bo

Donnie’s main weapon is his bo staff, the Tech-Bo. It houses a multitude of weapons such as rockets, drills, saws, lasers, and even a disco ball. The Tech-Bo possesses non-offensive functions as well such as a cement mixer and a tracking device. While it’s a very useful gadget, it runs on batteries, which need to be recharged or it’s just a regular bo-staff.

Battle Shells

As a soft shell turtle, Donatello has decided to toughen up and protect himself with Battle Shells, armored backpacks which contain mechanical arms, saw blades, blowtorches, jetpacks, and more. Donnie’s created several Battle Shells and can remotely call them in from the Turtle Tank or the sewer. In case the turtles need a quick getaway, Battle Shells come with portable DonniePods to take them to safety. The Battle Shells also record everything going on in the environment, which was used to replicate Hypno-Potamus’ mind controlling music. While they’re incredibly useful, they are far from indestructible and have been hacked and turned against him in the past. Their most peculiar ability is the power to seemingly scan and forcefully speed up a being’s aging process.

Goggles

Donatello’s goggles possess several functions such as night vision, scanning, and a radar that can trace and pick up mystical signatures.

S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N.

Shelldon serves as Donatello’s robot assistant, being able to use and control DonnieTech remotely. He has the capability to hover around or transform into a battle mode, but it has been destroyed quite easily by the Shredder. While it was only shown by his V0.1 self, he likely retained the ability to time travel back far enough to steal eggs from dinosaurs.

The Big Drill

Donatello’s greatest weapon is his giant drill. It can dig through surfaces, carry his weapons, and serves as a great way to deal with villains when upgraded with Hamato Ninpo Chi. Also good for hero poses.

Abilities

Shared

Mutant Turtle Biology

As mutated anthropomorphic reptiles, the TMNT can think and speak like actual humans. They have three fingers and toes on each hand and feet across the series. Like real life turtles, they can attract their bodies into their shells, albeit a bit quicker. Their shells are also extremely durable, capable of taking a fair bit of damage before cracking, stopping piercing weapons like swords and darts, and even bullets in some versions. Turtles are also cold-blooded reptiles, and in this case, the Ninja Turtles’ cold-blooded nature has interestingly let them remain immune to heat-seeking, as Shredder’s heat-seeking missile didn’t home in on them.

Mirage

Chi Manipulation

As one of the many methods to boost the Turtles’ training, Splinter taught the Turtles to hone in their chi for strength and balance. This was most prominently used when Donatello connected to a weapon that harnessed strong spiritual energy to fire lasers strong enough to blast holes in mountains, with his own spiritual energy being strong enough to overpower it when combined with its original host. While the Turtles themselves haven’t shown the same means of weaponizing this chi to the extent that Splinter previously has, they have found other means of using it, such as Leonardo being able to sense the fake Splinter’s aura.

Astral Projection
(Urban Legends)

Trained by master Splinter in the Astral arts, the turtles are able to communicate with him and each other in the Astral Plane. The Astral Plane allowed Leo to communicate with Donnie’s spirit while he was severely incapacitated and unconscious, and allowed the turtles to reach out to Splinter when he was mutated into a bat. Misuse of the Astral Plane has resulted in the turtles swapping bodies, but it also helped the turtles eventually return Splinter to his normal and intelligent rat form.

Resistances

Mental Manipulation: The Turtles have managed to break out of mind control forcing them to commit crimes, with Leo breaking out before his brothers, and while the other three Turtles weren’t able to on their own, Leonardo was able to recognize that his memories had been tampered with thanks to his training with Splinter.

1987

Whoo-wee

A form of martial arts the ‘87 turtles know is the art of Whoo-wee. The style of combat focuses on doing little action and waiting for your opponent to mess up, such as when Donnie got agitated by Leo doing nothing in combat, thus leaving him open for Leo to do a counter attack and be sent flying.

Resistances

Extreme Temperatures: In 87, Raph nearly takes a dip in lava, but was saved by Mikey at the last second. The Turtles also encounter Frosty, who froze over Manhattan and froze a radio tower in minutes, and the Turtles were directly blasted by its freeze breath and were fine.

Power Nullification: In ‘87, the Turtles encountered Muckman, who emitted energy that counteracted the Turtles’ mutation, which made them so weak that they couldn’t lift a manhole cover by themselves. To counteract this, Donnie developed an antidote that makes them immune to Muckman’s effects.

Energy Drain: In ‘87, the turtles are able to resist a ray which was capable of draining the energy of both machines and humans. This caused April and the whole city of New York to be put to sleep but the turtles are just fine after being hit due to their mutation.

Archie

Telepathy

The Turtles take a lot after their master, and that can sometimes extend to Splinter’s more spiritual abilities. In the Archie series, we see this in full display as they converse with their master from across the globe.

2003

Qigong

A total one-off technique to help the turtles breathe in lack of oxygen. Qigong is described as internal breathing, slowing the turtles’ breath and heart rate to allow them to survive in such conditions. They can’t fight while doing this since it’d break their concentration, but it’s better to stay alive

Chi Manipulation

After training under the Ninja Tribunal, the Turtles gained the ability to tap into their chi to enhance themselves. There are a few variations of this, but the most notable is it greatly increased their physical strength. Raphael and Donatello were able to easily shatter stone structures while amped, and Michelangelo could run at supersonic speeds. It’s also with this that the Turtles are able to use their mystic weapons to greater effects, such as firing energy projectiles or increasing their striking power. While this may have been a side-effect of their transformation into the Dragon Forms (more on that later), chi has also been used to make barriers, one of which being strong enough to block a blast from Tengu Shredder.

Resistances

Electricity: The Turtles have routinely survived electrocution from multiple sources, with other comparable characters like Splinter and Casey Jones doing the same.

Mind Reading and Manipulation: While it took some effort, Donatello was able to willpower his way through a Triceraton mind probing device, even short circuiting it. Similarly, Leo was able to break free of the Necro Monster’s control despite briefly succumbing to it initially.

Invisibility: A bit of a strange one, but the Turtles as children were able to still see a bone demon that was rendered invisible through a special amulet, despite others like Splinter and the Ancient One being unable to see them. While this is speculated to be because they were children, and thus pure and innocent, the Ninja Tribunal still believe not all children could resist the effects of the amulet, and that the Turtles must be special.

IDW

The Kuji-Kiris

Otherwise known as the Nine-Cuts, the Kuji-Kiris are enacted by hand gestures that pull on the mystic energies, having close ties to black magic. The cuts need to be manually removed otherwise they’ll be debilitating to the user and others around them. They are to be done in the shadows, so not revealed to anyone, otherwise the magic will go awry. There are a total of nine, plus a secret one, however the Turtles are taught certain ones by the Shredder, so they will be specified on who knows what, leaving out a single Cut since the Turtles don’t know via it being solely taught to Jennika (Who’s really cool btw).

Rin, The First Cut – Strength, To Confrontation The First Cut taught to the Turtles by the Shredder, Rin is less about strength, but more about the psychological fortitude to tackle a difficult task. Shredder displays being able to blend in with the environment and have increased strength, along with breathing fire

Pyo, The Second Cut – The Soldier, To Channel. Another one taught to all the Turtles, Pyo empowers them with the ability to focus with singular clarity on an individual task. This gives them great physical and mental endurance.

To, The Third Cut – Harmony, Battle. Michelangelo was exclusively taught this one. This cut allows Mikey to assess the abilities and strength of his teammates, creating a consensus and buy-in  in a group at odds. Mikey used this to unlock the secret of Zixx’s holograms, feeding a grybx while also calming it after completing its mission.

Sha, The Fourth Cut – Against a foe, Healing. Taught to Leonardo exclusively, it allows him access to his Dark Leo alter ego, back when his brain was altered to work for Shredder. Leo had to let go of his broken mind initially, and embrace it without fear of his ego death.

Kai (wait a minut-), The Fifth Cut – All, With Everyone. Taught to all the Turtles, Kai acknowledges the strength of bonds between the users, allowing them to sense the people they are bonded with in danger.

Retsu, The Seventh Cut – Control of Space and Time, To Move in a Row. This is actually one that the Turtles each have partially done, but Donatello is the only one who knows its full capabilities thanks to Shredder. Astral Projection is one of the partial abilities Retsu is capable of. Other turtles like Leo have used it to travel to the Astral Plane, Raph has used it to look for Alopex, and all of them have felt connected to each other’s emotions, Donnie himself is even capable of using other abilities while projecting. Donnie can create portals to travel across time, even stopping time as a result.

Jin, The Eighth Cut – In formation, To Prepare, The Reading of Thoughts. Raphael used this cut after Saki teached him to realize that Oroku really did want to help the Turtles. The cut allows Raph to understand someone’s motives, even allowing Raph to be aware of Hob’s intentions.

Zen, The Ninth Cut – To Move Forward. Taught to all the Turtles, this Cut allows the Turtles to move on from their personal struggles.

The Tenth Cut

The Tenth Cut, Tong, is Unification, Interconnection, and as a whole. Taught to all of the Turtles. In Ninja Turtles, there exists Metaphysical Gravity, or commonly known as Radiant Gravity, extending beyond our own universe and into the higher planes of reality. Thanks to their bond, the Turtles possess great Radiant Gravity, which together, along with Jennika, were able to summon Cherubae. This even allowed them to tap into space and time, accepting all of their past, present and future. In the final battle against the Rat King, they used Tong, emitting  energy around them, Leo, while as a spirit, has even used this energy to slice Rat King in half in the astral plane way before the Armageddon Game.

Resistances

Mind Manipulation: Leo resisted Kitsune controlling his mind when the other Turtles couldn’t

Electricity Manipulation: Turtles have survived electricity before

Extreme Heat: Turtles are fine after a barn explosion

2012

Healing (Leo Only)

With Healing Hands trained by Splinter himself, Leo can perform a series of hand movements and incantation to heal himself and his allies from any fatal injury, including poison. However, only Leo learned this technique, so only he gets the ability.

Pressure Points

Trained by master Splinter to use this technique, the Turtles can use these techniques to stun or paralyze their opponents as seen above.

Resistances

Electricity: Mikey and Donnie took an insane amount of electricity and walked it off

Mind Manipulation: Mikey was able to eat mutated pizzas that seemingly mind controlled the people of New York

Fear and illusion Manipulation: Leo resisted the spores that gave people nightmares and hallucinations

Rise

Hamato Ninpo

Awakened through trust in each other and their Hamato Clan lineage, the Turtles were able to achieve Hamato Ninpo. This technique allows the Turtles to harness the collective power of every previous member of the Hamato Clan and manipulate their inner chi to create weapons out of nothing. The TMNT were able to use powers similar to their mystical weapons, which are listed below.

Raphael: Raph can use his forcefield constructs with any weapon now, even his classic Sai. Additionally, if stabbed, he can teleport and replace himself with a forcefield duplicate. Said duplicates are so advanced, they can look like the original and even act on their own.

Leonardo: Now able to create two swords instead of one, Leonardo’s teleportation abilities have been further increased. In addition to being able to open numerous portals at once, Leo can swap the positions of objects with his swords.

Michelangelo: Mikey’s nunchucks are able to extend to seemingly no end, much like his previous Kusari Fundo, with chains capable of restraining even the Shredder or even wrapping around and tossing entire buildings. The weapon still retains its ability to control fire. Aside from his weapon, Michelangelo also learned how to channel his mystic powers to create portals across both time and dimensions. However, completing this spell will sacrifice his body, but the stress can be shared with his brothers which only results in damage to his arms.

Donatello: Even with chi powers, Donatello still finds a way to do machines, as he can now replicate his tech through constructs. From what’s shown, Donatello can form fully functional weapons such as rockets, giant laser guns, or a giant jetpack. Additionally, Donatello can extend the range of his chi into his weapons and augment their power, like when he turned his drill into a giant spinning staff.

Resistances

Power Nullification/Sealing: When they first battled the Krang, the Turtles had their Hamato Ninpo abilities completely sealed off. However, when they once again found their resolve, they broke this seal and regained their full might.

Mind Control/Biological Manipulation: Reawakening their Hamato Ninpo broke Rise Raphael out of the Krang’s mind control and allowed him to physically rip off the mutations they had infused him with. Also, as shown with Splinter, the mind has its own inner versions of oneself that will fight and ward off invaders.

Extreme Temperatures: In Rise, Raphael is able to withstand being in the middle of Michelangelo’s Kusari Fudo fire tornado and blasts without so much as sweating. The turtles are also relatively fine being inside the sewer when the AC is cold enough for ice to form.

Forms

Mirage

Vampiric Mutation (Raphael)

After being bitten by vampires, the mutagen in Raphael’s body forced him to undergo a physical transformation that had him resembling a far more monstrous Turtle (with him being compared to Gamera in-universe more than once). This form greatly increases his strength, letting him easily smash through walls and have a generally even physical fight with Leatherhead. While he initially didn’t have any proper control in this form, he gradually learned to control it and could keep a level head, though his increased size made it harder to use his sai by his own admission. If he’s overexerting adrenaline, however, he’ll burn through the form and permanently return to normal.

Cyborg Donatello
(Urban Legends)

At the beginning of TMNT Urban Legends, Donatello’s body was destroyed in a battle against evil robots and crushed by a fall from a tall helicopter, rendering him basically dead… were it not for a rogue AI from one such robot attaching itself to his body and essentially fusing their two forms. As a cyborg, Donnie got access to a plethora of powers the turtles couldn’t even fathom prior. His arm could turn into a gun that could blast enemies to bits, his body became basically a swiss army knife, able to manifest any weapon he could conjure with his mind, and he even learned the ability to make clones of himself. The AI also amplified Donnie’s intelligence massively, but not without a cost. The AI often wrestled Donnie for control of his mind, and even took over his body on multiple occasions, and Donnie needed the help of his brothers to fight it back. Also, as revealed in the ending, Donnie’s robot body is so weak to EMPs, that just one completely killed it and freed Donnie from its control and weight in the end.

1987

Unstable Mutations

After the mutagen in their bodies began to unstabilize, the TMNT took on more monstrous forms, which were too brutish to have them wield their weapons normally. As a tradeoff, they were way stronger and had powers built into their genetic code. Donatello can see through walls, and Raphael can punch hard enough to cause explosions. As the name suggests, the instability means that they can’t activate or leave the form on command, and basically have to adjust in the moment.

While these forms served as a benefit on occasion, they were seen more as a detriment, even more so as the mutations advanced and they lost the ability to control themselves. As a result, they eventually stabilized their mutagenic DNA and erased these forms from their biological code.

2003

Dragons

Towards the end of Season 5, due to unlocking their Chi and continuing to hone it, the turtles were able to transform into their extremely powerful dragon forms. The appearance is actually a manifestation of the turtles’ spirit and inner being, with a dragon being a symbol of wisdom and strength, as well as an extreme rarity only shared by exceptionally skilled fighters like the Ninja Tribunal. Aside from the obvious large size and flight, the dragons are physically strong enough to easily toss around the Tengu Shredder and even hold their own against his similar draconic transformation, and their fire breaths are able to match or even overpower him. It should be noted that these forms were possible due to the harnessing of Chi available through the Amulet of the Acolyte, and these were destroyed towards the end, meaning the turtles cannot transform into these forms again. However, given this is their strongest state and available through an item they had for a whole season, it will be accounted for nonetheless.

IDW

Dark Leo

Dark Leo is Leonardo’s alter ego after being mind zapped by Kitsune to work for the Shredder, it’s essentially a more ruthless version of Leo. While he initially went back to normal, Leo is capable of assessing this after learning his primary Cut, Sha.

Throughout the entire franchise, the Ninja Turtles have proven their worth against countless foes and even their own Sensei. Defeating the likes of the Shredder, Krang, Baron Draxum, and other threats to New York City, they should be comparable to the majority of feats in their respective continuities, regardless of how slapstick or serious they are.

Weaknesses

Four decades of stories would lead one to think the turtles have truly done and seen it all, and there is some truth in that. However, through it all, they do have core character traits, and by proxy, character flaws.

Leonardo: Being the leader often means he carries the biggest burden of the four. Despite his composure, he has a hard time improvising when a plan falls through, but moreover in said situations, he’s quick to put himself in a self sacrificial role. It’s as he says, “Turtles fight with HONOR!”.

Donatello: In the 87 theme song, notice how it says “Donatello does machines”, and not “Donatello is perfect at machinery and has never had his own inventions blow up in his face”. There’s a reason for that. Donnie likes to build things, sometimes things that are fucking bullshit, but there are many instances of these inventions running into a scenario he hasn’t accounted for. Most of those scenarios are his machines being weaponized against him. While he can create countermeasures in the future, that usually involves getting into trouble in the first place. Also, his book smarts rarely translate into street smarts, and his skills at best are on average with his brothers and at worst are below; often due to him taking the sidelines to work on technological situations. Practical for saving the world, a bit of a detriment in direct combat.

Michelangelo: He’s the young brother. The jokester. The funny one. Mikey is committed to his role, and in a fight that often holds him back. Though it should be notable that this also comes with its own advantages. However, it’s undeniable that this image of himself that he sees himself as does not reflect his full potential, which we only see in the most dire- and personal- of situations. In his own eyes, Mikey is oftentimes as good as he needs to be to annoy Raph, and no more.

Raphael: Raphael is a very emotional person, and while it’s not entirely accurate to say that equates to him being short tempered, that does make up a majority of it. Unless he’s the 87 iteration, Raphael is incredibly easy to ragebait, and that often leaves him open. Of the four turtles, he is by far the easiest to exploit for this very reason.

As for 87 Raph, his big weakness is being a huge misogynist.

Ninjago

Background

“Ninjaaa-Go!”

Long before time had a name… the First Spinjitzu Master created Ninjago with the four elemental weapons. But after his passing, a dark, evil force sought to gain their power; Lord Garmadon. His brother, Master Wu, sought out four ninja to help find them before he did, training them under his wing in the art of Spinjitzu, and managed to retrieve the Golden Weapons. Maybe for now, Ninjago was safe with these powerful artifacts in the hands of such responsible and dignified ninja…

…as if. To be quite frank, despite their power and training, these four still had… let’s just say ways to go. These four ninja, based on an elemental power they would harness, protected the land from attacks.

Kai, the Red Ninja of Fire.

Zane, the White Ninja of Ice.

Cole, The Black Ninja of Earth

and Jay, The Blue Ninja of Lightning.

The Ninja were gathered from all across the world coming from different backgrounds. Kai lived as a blacksmith along with his sister Nya, Jay would be an inventor living with his mother and father, Zane was engineered to help protect people (though he wouldn’t know it at the time), and Cole would come from a line of choir and dance. Each Ninja was greeted by Sensei Wu and would eventually volunteer to train with him answering the call of destiny. They would eventually work to defeat and seal away Lord Garmadon. Though just because they defeated the big bad, didn’t mean they were quite done.

Being entrusted to protect Ninjago meant that they still had to work on themselves and protect the fated Green Ninja. In addition to…well being more responsible, Zane would realize his true purpose and accept his identity as a Nindroid, Jay would learn to be more confident in himself, Cole would learn to be honest with his father about his calling in life, and Kai who had DREAMED of becoming the green ninja more than anyone else, had to let that go and protect the actual green Ninja; Garmadon’s son Lloyd. It was a rocky start with Lloyd trying to follow in his fathers footsteps, but after Wu told a bedtime story (not joking that’s actually how he gets turned to the side of good) he would grow into a new younger brother for the Spinjitzu Ninja.

From there the Ninja would time and time again protect Ninjago against overwhelming threats, weather that be the Overlord of Evil, Wu’s fallen student Morro, Djinn Pirate captain Nadakhan, the Time brothers, or even Lord Garmadon once again the ninja would stand up and against all odds come out on top. It certainly wasn’t easy and the threats would be ever increasing even up to today but the Ninja brethren will never give up no matter the odds. The challenges they face and their bond to one another sharpens each others’ skill and power, and as long as the four found brothers have each other, few can stand in their way.

Experience & Skill

Thanks to their training from Master Wu, the Ninja have become excellent warriors and defenders of Ninjago. Their journeys have put them against the likes of an army of Skeletons, Serpentine, warriors made from seemingly indestructible stone, Nindroids, other Elemental Masters, ghosts, pirates, pretty much anything you can think of, to be honest. Befitting Ninja, they’re masters of stealth, have training in pretty much any weapon (though they obviously have their favorites), and are pretty good with disguises. They’ve blended into the crowd of Chen’s forces, at least for a time, stealthed their way across buildings, and swiped the map to the Golden Weapons without Samukai ever noticing them. They’ve even battled the giant world-devourering serpent, the Great Devourer, and tricked it into biting its own tail to keep it in place for Garmadon to get the finishing blow in.

Speaking of Garmadon, when he turned to the good side and became another sensei to them, he gave them lessons in the Art of the Silent Fist, the ability to, as Garmadon puts it, “fight without fighting”. They may not have gotten a ton of training in this, but they still used the lessons they did get to cause a squad of Nindroids to destroy the central computer that powers them, shutting down power across all of New Ninjago City. They also had just enough tech-savvy knowledge to build a spaceship together on a comet…with a BUNCH OF SCRAPS!! They can accomplish a lot when they work together, even holding their own against their own Master Wu when he was under the influence of the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu. This is important because Wu is directly said to be thousands of years old, and has been training in his father’s teachings since he was a child. Speaking of, the First Spinjitzu Master has also had threats in his own time, like Thunderfang or the Overlord, and the Ninja have held their own against those titanic monsters as well, even playing a crucial role in defeating them once and for all.

Kai may look like a hothead…and he is, but he may as well be a prodigy in Ninja training. Hell, this guy took on a small army of Skeletons even before his training with Wu, and even then, said training was likely only a few days long at most given the way the scene is presented. Afterward, he held his own against his teammates as they were jumping him, and that was before they all realized they were supposed to be working together. With all this training, Kai has defeated Jay in a sparring match, fought several Hypnobrai warriors singlehandedly, escaped the Pit of No Return with Wyldfyre, and has enough precision with sword throws to disarm Pythor of a Fangblade and Garmadon of his Mega Weapon. Guess he took the ability to spill Wu’s tea as a beginner to heart!

Kai’s Ninja stealth skills have also placed him in advantageous situations before, having snuck up on Karlof, the Master of Metal, and disarmed him(kinda literally, in fact), and snuck around Cinder, the Master of Smoke, and knocked him off his feet. Speaking of Master of Smoke, when Kai fought the previous bearer of that title, Ash, Kai managed to win the competition by tricking Ash into going intangible and passing through him, giving him the chance to snatch the Jadeblade for the victory. Kai was actually the first of his team to learn the Rising Dragon Technique, and he used this skill in his battle against Nokt, one of the Forbidden Five, who’s been around for millenia. And while Kai did ultimately lose to Nokt, the fact that he held his own as long as he did against someone who had absorbed all the other Elemental Powers in Ninjago is remarkable as is. And Kai isn’t just a skilled fighter, he’s also very crafty and tricky. He tricked Chen into thinking he bought his manipulation, and put Morro in a position to trap himself in crystal. Also at one point after being trapped in the Land of Monsters, he put together a mech out of scrap, and even LEGO bricks…clearly no relation, right?

Jay’s claim to fame is tinkering and engineering. In fact, Wu even notes him as the most resourceful of the Ninja. He is the one who turned Destiny’s Bounty from a shipwreck into a mobile base of operations, after all. He’s built an amplifier for his Lightning Dragon that lets it roar louder, motorcycles for the other Ninja, and a fake lie detector that tricked a traitor into revealing himself. Some other…niche inventions include a machine that removes the core of every apple on a tree before they’re picked, material that can be written on as a document or stretched to form a waterproof tent, a blanket designed to keep a person cold on a hot night, and stilts that go from extremely tall to normal height at the touch of a button. In the words of Wu, if you leave Jay alone for an hour with tools and raw materials, there’s no telling what you might find in return.

But don’t let his tinkering make you believe he isn’t a skilled fighter, because he absolutely is. He fought a group of thugs with nothing but the motorcycle he was riding, disarmed the Mechanic by using a floppy disc like a throwing star, and took on an entire Skeleton army to buy his teammates time. One time, when Garmadon used the Mega Weapon to create perfect evil clones of the Ninja, Jay was the only one who managed to defeat his doppelganger without any outside assistance. Interestingly, Jay was also the first of his team to even master Spinjitzu, though the others weren’t too far behind. And like Kai, he also has his moments of trickery, swapping Nuckal’s weapon for a stick without him noticing(and while Nuckal was holding onto his weapon, huh?!), and tricking some Serpentine warriors into battling each other.

Jay isn’t the only one who’s good with machines, as Zane is also a strong engineer. Though much of that could be down to his physiology. Zane isn’t an ordinary person in any way, he’s actually a robot, or Nindroid as Jay dubbed him, built by the late Dr. Julien. It may be this that helps Zane pull off some ridiculous feats of engineering and calculations. Using blueprints he’s just discovered, Zane was able to rebuild the Falcon after it malfunctioned during flight, ran every possible scenario on how to defeat the Great Devourer, ran three million simulations on how to battle the aquatic Merlopians, almost entered a 13000-sequence self-destruct code from a mech, and downloaded thousands of detective and sailor/pirate movies and novels for research, either for investigating or for commanding deep-sea missions.

Actually, his current titanium body is one that he built himself after his apparent death in the battle against the Overlord. His expertise isn’t limited to just technology though, he’s actually quite gifted in other skills too. He’s able to read ancient text from the Ninja’s ancestors, is famously good at chess, and in his encounter with Nadakhan, he was able to accurately predict his arrival and his deals with Jay. He’s noted to have the best book smarts of the Ninja, but of course, being a Ninja requires more than just book smarts, and Zane is impressive in combat too. Zane has defeated a giant mech designed to take down Treehorns, took out a squad of Nindroids by himself, tricked General Cryptor into hitting himself, disarmed Bansha of her sword before she could kill Nya with it, and fended off Garmadon’s Shadow Ninja for a time.

He’s even swiped the Prime Empire motherboard from a group of villains without any of them noticing. His street smarts go beyond his hand-to-hand fighting as well. He’s used a pair of Starteeth to free a chained Leviathan, tricked the Overlord into thinking he turned against the Ninja, and tricked a shapeshifter into shifting into himself, which caused him to go haywire…because apparently shifting into a Nindroid will do that to you. Zane’s also got some insane endurance, able to stay underwater for more than ten minutes even before discovering he wasn’t human. Zane also notes that a battle between him and Cole could last for days without a winner.

On the topic of Cole, he was the first Ninja that got training from Wu, and while the other Ninja have their standout qualities, Cole is the one who keeps them in line, and stands out on his own using his strength and dancing background in clever ways. He’s climbed the Mountain of a Million Steps with Zane on his back, disarmed the Hypnobrai General Slithraa of his staff, and performed the Triple Tiger Sashay, a dance move notorious for being extremely difficult, dubbed the hardest dance move ever created. According to his father Lou, the dance has been attempted by many professionals, but never been successfully done, and Cole not only mastered it, but implemented it in his fighting style.

On the topic of fighting ability, Cole beat Zane in a sparring match, defeated Mr. Pale, the Master of Light, even though he ate so much he was on the verge of vomiting, defeated a group of ghosts by himself, and held his own against Master Yang, who mastered every martial art in Ninjago, and even developed his own: Airjitzu, which Cole himself managed to pull off despite not having any training with it prior. And upon meeting the Skull Sorcerer, even though he was in a mineshaft full of Vengestone, which nullifies Elemental Powers, Cole still defeated the villain’s forces singlehandedly. Cole is also skilled enough to battle Griffin Turner, the Master of Speed, and put the speedster in a position to get knocked out. And while he’s nowhere near Jay or Zane’s level of expertise, he still had enough tech-savvy to build a dragon mech in the First Realm, and fixed a transmitter after being stranded in Oni fog alone. Ninja never quit, after all!

Equipment

The Golden Weapons

You know the story, created by The First Spinjitzu Master long before time had a name, the Golden Weapons are immensely powerful weapons that harness the powers of creation. So powerful that those lacking the power to wield all four are destroyed. Together they can summon massive storms, create vortexes through space and time, rebuild The Destiny’s Bounty or launch The Megaweapon into space with so much energy it turned it into a star. They can also repel the demonic Oni.

Sword of Fire: Kai’s Golden Weapon, the Sword of Fire is a living blade that can channel the power of Fire to shoot fireballs, ignite itself. It turns into the Blade Cycle, a flaming motorcycle. Pretty Fiyah.

Nunchucks of Lightning: Belonging to Jay, The Nunchucks of Lightning channel lightning to well, shoot lightning. They can also make energy storms and power machinery. It turns into the Storm Glider, a Lightning Jet.

Shurikens of Ice: Zane’s Golden Weapons, these chilly throwing stars freeze anything they touch and can project beams of Ice, its Ice is so cold it requires extremely hot temperatures to melt. They also always return to Zane’s hands after he’s thrown them. It turns into the Snowmobile, which is not really really a snowmobile and more like a bike.

Scythe of Quakes: Cole’s Golden Weapon, the Scythe of Quakes, harnessing the power of the earth it can cut through the hardest stone, cause earthquakes, and create fissures. It can turn into the Tread Assault, a mid-sized tank with missiles.

The Elemental Blades

In their battle against the Stone Army, the ninja travelled the Temple of Light and obtained the Elemental Blades. These Blades harness the Powers of Creation, channeling the Ninja’s Elemental Powers, even able to harm the soldiers of the Stone Army, who were immune to the FSM’s powers

The Techno Blades

Following his defeat by the Ultimate Spinjitzu Master, The Overlord returned as a virus that infected the technology created by Borg Industries throughout Ninjago City. Cyrus Borg created the Techno Blades in secret, giving the Ninjago an opportunity to fight back. The Technoblades can hack into systems, completely transform vehicles, purify Nindroids like P.I.X.A.L and even affected Digital Overlord rebooting the system and purging his corruption. In Commercials they could even destroy Golden Master Overlord.

The Aeroblades

Aeroblades are specialized boomerang esc Ninja stars designed to interact with and destroy ghosts. They specifically do this by targeting the weakness ghosts have to water. They are made of Deepstone, which comes from the bottom of the ocean allowing them to interact with ethereal ghosts.

Chain Rifles

During Season 9, the Ninja were stuck in the First Realm, in which they had to avoid Dragon Hunters and find the First Spinjitzu Masters armor to make it out of Ninjago. They gained an ally in Faith who taught them how to use the hunter’s Chain Rifles. With a shot, it fires a long stretch of hooks made of chain designed to ensnare a target in chains. A couple of shots of these can restrain creatures as large as dragons. Though there’s a limit to the amount of ammo before it runs out. More notable however is what these chains are made from, Vengestone. Vengestone is a very powerful substance that exists almost exclusively to negate Elemental Powers and prevent ghosts from phasing.

Underwater Harpoon Guns

When Jay and Zane(as well as Lloyd and Nya, but details) were travelling underwater to investigate an energy pulse, they were given scuba suits and laser-shooting harpoon guns. Just in case they need to adventure underwater!

Wingsuits

Thanks to our good old friend Jay (and Sora), the Ninjas were capable of using these wings to glide and fly longer distances by themselves. By using cords connected to wooden poles supporting them, the ninjas can also flap their wings. Then again, they’ve got like 10 different other ways of flying, so-

The Obsidian Weapons

The Obsidian Weapons are basically functionally identical to the Golden Weapons. They however restored the Ninja’s memories and Elemental Powers when obtained, after Ronin stole them.

The Scroll of the 4th Dimension

In some random little Legoland short film, the Ninja gained a scroll capable of manipulating the Time and Gravity elementals. It can manipulate time by stopping it, reversing it, and even breaking the fabric of time itself, sending them to a dimension outside the known universe and literally reshaping matter into a liquid state there. It can also mess with the direction of gravity in certain areas by warping the landscape around them, making small rooms into a much larger maze-like construct.

Miscellaneous Ninja Weapons

In guidebooks and LEGO sets, the Ninja are given a handful of different weapons, including:

  • Spears (Black Spear, Golden Spear, Flat Spear, Silver Spear)
  • Swords (Bladestaff, Silver Katana, Silver Katana, Ninjago Sword, Black Katana)
  • Tridents (Silver Serpent Striker, Serpent Striker)
  • Staffs (Bo Staff, Staff, Jewel Staff, Staff of the Dragons, Anti-Hypnosis Staff)
  • Chained Weapons (Flail of Ice, Golden Chained Fang)
  • Long-handled Weapons (Hammer, Trusty Axe, Golden Tri Scythe)
  • Golden Chainsaw
  • Lava Spike
  • Golden Point (which is a golden homing dagger)

Armors & Suits

Stone Armor: In their battle against the Golden Master,  the Ninja Dawned the Stone Army’s Stone Armor. It makes them immune to Elemental Powers. Even those of the FSM.

Techno Robes: Outfits created by Cyrus Borg which block facial recognition software.

Space Suit: On many occasions the Ninja’s missions have sent them to space, requiring a space suit.

Deepstone Armor: Armor made of Deepstone, a material that exploits the weakness of Ninjago’s Ghosts and allows them to ward of possession.

Hero Armor: Full Sets of Platemale armor

Scuba Suits: For any underwater adventures

Kai

Katanas & Swords

Katanas: Kai often fights with a Katana or even two, depending on the season.

Fire Sword: A sword able to engulf itself in fire, even external fire, which he can channel into a massive attack.

Reveal Blade: The Reveal Blade is an enhanced Prismatic Blade capable of seeing Invisible Spectral Dragonians, and destroying them. Given Spectral Dragonians are ghosts, it should be able to hit other incorporeal foes.

Mega Katana: basically just a large Katana

Reversal Time Blade

The time blades were constructed by Wu and Garmadon to take on and absorb the powers of the time brothers Acronix and Krux, the Reversal Time blade is the fourth and final blade found in the season after Kai and Nya made it through the vault of the Boiling Sea. Kai by the end of Season 7 manages to possess the Time Blade through obtaining it before his parents placed the blade in a vault.

With a single shot, the blade can reverse time, correcting moments where the user is at a disadvantage in battle and can reverse the aging of those it hits. It was vital to curing Wu who had been hit by Forward Time blade’s aging effects

Jetpack

For aerial combat, Kai flies around in a jetpack that fits into a bracket on his back, perfect for launching surprise attacks in the air.

Dark Chained Whip

Kai’s now iconic Ghost Rider chain. This slayer of Tahus is made from incredibly heavy chains of the underworld. that gives in a cold unsavoury feeling. It of course wreaks vengeance upon the opponents soul. Pulling them down and stealing their soul.

Jay

Nunchucks

Jay’s signature weapon is primarily a set of nunchucks. Two small blunt sticks connected by a chain. (they are very cool though)

Kusarigama

A Kusarigama is quite similar to nunchucks except it features a hooked blade, making it actually lethal.

Lightning Daggers

After taking on the identity of Rogue and becoming a bounty hunter, Jay began using a pair of Lightning Daggers in combat. They are pretty much just cool looking daggers.

Rocket Pack

For aerial combat, Jay has a lightning-powered Rocket Pack which, according to Ninjago’s Visual Dictionary, can soar through the skies at the speed of light.

Instant Disguiser

Jay can use a tiny instant disguiser to blend into enemy forces. Jay once used this to disguise himself as a Serpentine, though whether he can turn into others is unclear. What is clear is that for as solid as the disguise is, even fooled his fellow Ninja, the device does run on a limited battery, and can short out after only a few minutes.

Golden Double-Bladed Sword

The Golden Double-Bladed Sword acts almost instinctively and “cuts through anything”

Zane

Shurikens

Zane has some more basic surikens should he need it. While definitely inferior to his golden weapons, Zane should still be able to use variants that utilize ice like said golden weapons. Also somehow they can operate like a boomerang

Bow & Arrow

A newer weapon that Zane uses in season 8. Zane with pinpoint accuracy can shoot arrows at his targets, and should he be in a close quarters situation he can compact the bow into a melee weapon.

Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu

The Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu is an immensely powerful artifact that when held corrupts the user and their Spinjitzu. While it’s something the other Ninja (except Kai) have used, it’s inarguably the most relevant to Zane. Zane was corrupted by the scroll and sent to The Never-Realm for 60 Years, where he was brainwashed and used the scroll to commit atrocities. The Scroll grants an enormous power boost and amplifies the user’s Elemental Powers, making Zane’s Ice Unthawable, even to Kai (See Elemental Power of Fire). Zane has used this to create and levitate large ice formations, take Control of Minds and most importantly to freeze the entire Never-Realm and its inhabitants, plunging  it into an eternal winter, only free’d when he regained his memories.

Smoke Bombs

In a conflict of Ninja vs. Pirates, Zane pulled out two small smoke bombs that can obscure him from his enemies’ sights, opening them up for a sneak attack.

Whip

Also from the pirate battle, Zane has a little rope that he used to whip a pirate into shape…and several feet away.

Ninja Glider

For flight, Zane has a Ninja Glider made from six golden blades for wings. He can use it for silent glides over his enemies.

Jetpack

Much like Kai and Jay, Zane also has a jetpack, this one equipped with icicle-like wings and missile launchers.

The Thorn

A wooden spear made from the wood of the Sleepy Willow, it can send opponents to sleep

Cole

Scythe

A regular scythe that Cole can use in place of his golden weapon. Should have the same capabilities albeit less powerful than the golden weapon.

Hammer

Cole can use a regular hammer just as well as a scythe. First used in Season 8.

Blades of Deliverance

The Blades of Deliverance were a pair of blades given to Cole’s Mother Lilly by the Geckles and Munce. Lilly used them to kill Griefbringer, however they are otherwise unextraordinary.

Golden Tri Scythe

Cole’s Golden Tri Scythe is “The Ultimate Serpentine Repellent” (Whatever that means) and can turn into a car able to be camouflaged as a snake. (Sure man)

Vehicles

The Destiny’s Bounty

The Bounty is a consistent home and long distance travel option for the Ninja they have had no less then 6 different Bountys over the years, they just constantly crash them. The Bounty can both fly and as its appearance suggests, act as a boat.

The Land Bounty

The Land Bounty is like the Destiny’s Bounty, but for the land. It’s a large all terrains vehicle that can carry the Ninja around if it’s convenient for the plot of not having them use their big ass airship.

Mechs

The Ninja have a large variety of Mechs, way too many to write out, however they are all pretty similar, able to hold their own against larger enemies, climb mountains, shoot lasers, or channel Elemental Powers.

Vehicles

The Ninja also have many vehicles for just about any situation. Cars, Planes, Submarines let them travel across Land, Air, and Sea. Still, nothing tops The Bounty.

Abilities

Shared

Elemental Powers

Gifted to mortals millennia ago by the ancient and cosmic Source Dragons, Elemental Powers are the prime forces of the world able to be used by a select few Elemental Masters throughout the Merged Lands. Elemental Powers come from deep within, like courage, and are intensely linked to the user’s soul, to the point that an Elemental Master’s power cannot be permanently stolen from them. After Kai’s powers were stolen by Aspheera, they slowly returned to him over weeks in the Never-Realm, and even after sacrificing their powers to defeat the Overlord, the Ninja eventually regained them. As stated by Wu, “True power is never lost.”, and as stated by others, Elemental Powers are similar to courage in that they can wax and wane, but never completely lost.

As they are derived from Source Dragon energy, Elemental Powers have other, unique properties. They can close MergeQuakes, aftershocks of the original Merge that occurs when Realms try to share the same area and cleanse vehicles of Dark Matter, which is said to siphon one’s spirit and mind, as well as corrupt souls. They can even take the form of defensive shields, like the time the Ninja used them to defend themselves from the heat of atmospheric reentry. As a form of Source Dragon energy, Elemental Powers also react to objects such as the Weapon of Desolation, which can damage, disrupt or even overload Elemental Energy, and to Dragon Ivory, which can attract, redirect and absorb Elemental Powers.

Fire, Lightning, Ice and Earth each comprise the Elements of Creation and form Creation when combined together. With Creation, it has been stated that nearly anything is possible, imbued in the Golden Weapons, and the driving force behind the Tornado of Creation.

Spinjitzu

Ah yes the iconic signature move along with their catchphrase. Spinjitzu is when the ninja jumps up, whips around, and spins. Creating a tornado that takes out anyone in its path with a flurry of attacks. Spinjitzu is both an ancient technique and a philosophy of living, Spinjitzu is all about balance and requires a lifetime to master. The technique is the key for how a ninja moves, seen as the art of rotation that teaches flexibility to battle and life, rotation is the source of strength adding momentum and force to their blows and allows for constant rapid attacks. Though using the move wrong or even making one mistake can cause massive damage. It’s also great for ramping up momentum, pulling objects or enemies in, scaling surfaces and walls, using it for blocking incoming attacks, increasing your overall strength and digging through holes in the ground. Spinjitzu also increases the user’s speed, like how Master Wu used it in the first episode to save Kai. It also somehow allows you to fly in the air, making Airjitzu kind of useless…

Airjitzu

A Spinjitzu variant developed by Master Yang, with it the ninja can create a vortex of air that allows them to travel great distances vertically, which they mastered. Even reaching the Blind Man’s Eye above the Wailing Alps. an overall excellent mobility tool, if only they still used it.

Rising Dragon Technique

A technique taught to the Ninja (or in this case, Kai and Zane) by two ancient Dragons. By becoming aware of their motion on a universal scale the user can engulf themselves in energy to generate an actual rising dragon, where they can fly, shoot energy and even overpower Shatterspin.

Spinjitzu Burst

When an Elemental Master is surrounded by an enormous amount of their Element, they can achieve the Spinjitzu Burst, unleashing a massive vortex of Elemental Power. Kai and Cole are the ones confirmed to know Spinjitzu Burst, with Cole being the only one to ever use it. Kai would likely need a situation similar to being on the Sun and Cole needs to be beneath a Mountain. It is possible Jay and Zane could achieve it as well. Jay’s potential situation is unknown, while Zane may have been able to do it when he froze the Never-Realm.

Tornado of Creation

The Tornado of Creation is kind of quite literally what its name implies. By combining their powers together, the ninja can form a tornado quite literally capable of summoning a creation from nothing. The ninjas have made quite a few things, like:

While it can have disastrous consequences if not performed correctly, the ninja still can perform it assuming they have the Golden Weapons on hand.

Elemental Dragons

In Ninjago, every Elemental Master can conjure their own Elemental Dragon, and the Ninja are no different. They can do basically anything a dragon can, like flight, claws, and breathing their respective elements. Something unique is that if two dragons are summoned together, they’ll merge together, such as when Jay and Nya summoned theirs to save them from falling.

Summoning Circle

The Ninja are able to utilize 4 lamps, their Elemental Powers and some sort of ritual circle to temporarily summon Golden Ultra Dragon. They used this to defeat the Not-So-Great Devourer. It seems to require intense concentration to maintain.

Kai

Elemental Power of Fire

FIIIYAAAHHHHHH!

Derived from the Source Dragon of Motion and passed down from his father Ray, Kai wields the element of Fire to great effect. With it, Kai can do most of the things you’d expect: Fireballs, explosions, fire streams, fire walls, the works. Kai is very adept at using his element, able to overpower and incinerate Boreal, a dragon made out of pure ice. He is so proficient that he can manipulate fire from others, such as when he caught green fire from a dragon and redirected it, or when he absorbed the fire from Daidan to enhance his own strength. Kai’s fire even works in the vacuum of space, and on ghosts, such as the time he used his fire to blast Nindroids on the side of a spaceship, or heat up the Realm Crystal enough to burn Morro.

Of course, Kai can use his Fire for more than just basic fire blasts. After a combo, Kai can leave a trail of fire behind himself. He is skilled enough with his element to encase his hands in flame to enhance his own strikes, boost his speed, fly around, or even create solid fiery constructs. His control over flames is so great that he has created wings of fire to fly, formed his Elemental Dragon, created images on the ground, and even taught Wyldfyre to make golf club-like constructs to knock around flaming boulders.

However, Kai’s power isn’t just for combat. He has used Fire to create a light source in darkness and a bright flare in the middle of a storm, melt metal for blacksmithing or spot welding, and has used it to power up or repair mechs, robots and his vehicles. If that’s not enough, Kai also likes to use his power to impress women. He’s done it at least twice, and it never works for him.

Melting/Heat: Like Kai himself (or so he claims), Kai’s Fire is incredibly hot. He can turn cans to ash in a single blast, melt crystals and fuse bone to metal. Notably, Kai can use his powers to turn a large quantity of sand into glass (1,650°C/3,002°F). Most impressively, Kai used his power to melt down and liquify the Golden Armour, the remnants of the Golden Weapons that were only partially melted after creating a star (15,700,000°C/28,300,000°F).

Smoke

Interestingly enough, Kai’s power over Fire also grants him some control over smoke (despite Smoke being its own Elemental Power). He has used it to make smoke blasts to blind his enemies and cause them to choke.

Jay

Elemental Power of Lightning

RIP Zane

Befitting the joker with a motormouth, Jay is the Master of Lightning, derived from the Source Dragon of Energy and passed down from his biological mother, Libber. An electrical discharge between the heavens and earth, Lightning is incredibly dangerous, Jay himself has claimed that his bolts deliver 10,000 volts of justice, and other sources have claimed that Jay can generate over 1.21 gigawatts of electrical power, for all his DeLorean-powering needs. Jay can shock opponents, infuse his body with electricity to increase his power, and redirect lightning bolts in a storm. Jay’s Lightning is so powerful that most of his foes are defeated with a single bolt, and is powerful enough to crack stone.

Lightning is a versatile element, capable of far more than simply shocking people. With it, Jay has flown around, can create electrical force-fields, lit up a series of crystals in a cave, channeled electricity into his weapons, and controlled lightning even without touching it, like when he used power lines to shock Garmadon’s Colossus. His electricity has been conducted through metal and water, and can affect incorporeal beings such as ghosts, or even the hollowed out ghostly Forbidden Five from the Spectral Lands.

Jay’s power over Lightning extends into a further level of control over electromagnetism in general. He can use his powers to hack into vending machines and advertisements and to overload and discharge electronics such as in the gladiator pit and the Sons of Garmadon’s motorcycle engines. He has even used his powers underwater to charge batteries. Jay himself has his own electrical signal and can function as a lightning rod, attracting bolts of lightning into himself to protect a ship.

Befitting the nature of lightning, Jay’s powers also seem to grant incredible speeds. He’s amplified a motorcycle’s speed with his powers, enough to counter slowed time, and Jay himself has lightning-fast reflexes, and is the fastest runner of the team, able to keep up with speeding motor vehicles.

Wind Manipulation

In a single season 1 episode, Jay created a blast of wind to clear lava from his path! How’d he do that? Your guess is as good as ours, but it’s cool.

Shatterspin

While amnesiac and manipulated, Jay unlocked the power of Shatterspin. Incredibly dangerous, Shatterspin is a corrupted form of Spinjitzu created by the Forbidden Five, and requires the user to shatter their inner goodness, corrupting them. The style is predicated on overwhelming power; turning every defense into an attack, and every attack into a finishing blow. This power has been called the ultimate power in all the Realms, and the Wolf Clan, who study the style, became the greatest power in the Realm of the Wyldness.

The technique lets the user create a dangerous red tornado around themselves, capable of shooting blasts of energy and boosting the user’s strength. When Cinder used it, he was able to break Wyldfyre’s leg with ease, and Jay easily overpowered Nya with it. Other users of Shatterspin have used it to shatter magical runes, and shatter massive stone pillars. Its only counter is the Rising Dragon Technique, which exploits its focus on force with motion, perfectly countering it.

While Jay only uses Shatterspin with the Wolf Mask and the Gong of Shattering, it’s not a stretch to say he can’t use it without it. Doc Wyatt claims he could still use it, and people like Garmadon have mastered a rudimentary form of the technique that doesn’t require a Wolf Mask. Indeed, the Wolf Mask Warriors were only granted a Wolf Mask after mastering the way of Shatterspin. Thus, it’s reasonable that Jay could replicate Shatterspin if he needed to.

Zane

Elemental Power of Ice

Calm and precise, like the Nindroid himself, Ice is derived from the Source Dragon of Focus and passed down to Zane from the previous Master of Ice, Hibernus. Zane can fire beams and balls of ice, able to freeze just about anyone solid, whether they’re a small-time crook or the embodiment of evil itself. He can spread his ice over an entire room in seconds, and erect massive walls of ice as he pleases, often for defense.

His ice is strong enough to stop Grief-Bringer in its tracks, momentarily hold back a rampaging tornado of water, and extinguish even Kai’s flames. Zane’s ice has incredible range, able to freeze lakes and rivers, entire hallways and create ice slides that reach between buildings in Ninjago City. He combines his Ice with his Nindroid brain for incredible combat capabilities, able to imbue Ice in his punches and his shurikens to freeze people with a punch, fire large shards of ice, or use it to keep a fast-moving opponent stuck in place.

Zane is skilled with Ice, and able to use it for far more than just freezing things in place. He’s used his powers to fly around in space, create gusts of cold wind, and is skilled enough to use his powers effectively at the bottom of the ocean. Zane’s connection to his ice is great, enough to stabilize and purify the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu’s corrupted ice. He was even able to briefly contend with the Weapon of Desolation’s corruption over the Boreal River.

Zane’s power (and his Nindroid physiology) also gives him an unnatural resistance to cold. He is able to survive in outer space without any special equipment and meditate at the bottom of a frozen pond.

Nindroid Physiology

Of course, Zane is far, far more than a Master of Ice. He’s a Nindroid, a walking computer! Of course, he doesn’t need food, water or oxygen, but he can also move much faster, hit much harder and withstand much more than a regular human, and can think much faster, too. Zane can analyse millions of simulations in seconds, run through every possible course of action for a solution and calculate the probability of certain events occurring. His intelligence is nearly unmatched, he can hack into almost anything and shut down computer systems.

His robotic body also makes him a useful tool as well as a friend, as his body has all the gadgets needed to get the job done. He can alter his voice, memory and emotions, record and play music such as the Sacred Flute’s tune, glow like a lightbulb, become a battering ram, store buzzsaws and explosive shurikens in his arms, and has infrared scanners in his eyes. Zane’s eyes are actually a very powerful tool, and he is able to connect to his Falcon and see through its eyes with Falcon Vision, a helpful counter to the Venomari poison.

His eyes can even scan areas, able to determine subtle changes like Morro’s possession of Lloyd, and track energies, such as reading the energy of the Elemental Monsters, and the energy of Lloyd, even determining Lloyd’s death by not being able to feel his energy. He can scan vehicles to assess for their damage, locate the Time Blades with temporal scanners, and scan people to determine their physical conditions, and their physiological changes.

Fitting for a Ninja, Zane has holographic technology, allowing him to impersonate almost anyone. He’s disguised himself as Snake Jaguar, Clutch Powers, Akita, or as the Ice Emperor. He can project these holograms out of his eyes, too, like when he displayed a map of Chen’s underground labyrinth.

He also, of course, has a Humour switch, that lets him perform absolute peak television.

Power Reroute

If his power is rerouted into his chest, Zane can create a massive burst of electricity. Shocking anyone that comes within his vicinity. The reroute can also create a magnetic field (our buddy is having an off day here).

Do note that P.I.X.A.L (more on her later) was the one able to do this while she was a part of Zane. As of Season 8 she fully separated from Zane and became Samurai X so your mileage may vary if he can still perform it. At best he can possibly replicate it but it wouldn’t be his go to option in a fight.

Cole

Elemental Power of Earth

For the strong, supportive rock of the team, there is no better Elemental Power than Earth. Derived from the Source Dragon of Strength and passed down to Cole from his mother, Lilly, Cole is more connected to his power than perhaps anyone else is connected to theirs. Cole can use Earth to manipulate rocks, dust, sand, and it grants him super strength. In fact, Cole is the strongest of the Ninja. Cole can telekinetically move and manipulate rock, separate stalactites from cave ceilings, pull spires of rock out from the ground to block paths or knock foes into the air, or form rock constructs, such as slides, by punching it. He’s even formed rock hands to crush Oni.

Cole can use his power to great effect. When his powers were janky, he was still able to create a sinkhole in order to trick Loyalists. He can make sinkholes in the ground to trip Garmadon’s Colossus, tunnel underground to escape the Hoarder, or create fissures in the ground such as when Cole trapped Vangelis in the ground during the crystal invasion. Cole has used the latent Earth power in the Titan Dragon Mech to form a stone bridge, and has used dust to blind a corrupted Nya.

As implied by the Scythe of Quakes, the power of Earth is able to create earthquakes. Cole can send shockwaves through the ground, create localised earthquakes, and send tremors through the ground. Cole has shaken an entire mountain, punched a pole in Chen’s palace to send dust onto Mr. Pale, and caused an entire floating island to shake. Cole is so connected to the tremors in the ground, he can sense danger through them, and differentiate between different tremors! When in the Land of Lost Things, Cole even felt the earth ‘screaming’ at him, due to the Source Dragon of Balance’s corpse.

At his lowest moment as a ghost, Cole found the power deep inside himself to persevere, and connected with his powers in a deeper way. Cole unlocked his Earth Punch. At will, Cole can cause his arms to turn to magma, increasing his strength and his control over his powers. He accidentally used this power to levitate, and has used it to punch through walls, Yang’s Yin Blade, and attack with the power of lava. Cole has described using his Earth Punch as feeling like he can punch through anything, and allows him to connect with the earth and let its energy infuse him (see above).

Cole’s power can increase when he’s surrounded by earth, so much so that he can even float (see above), so it’s fitting that after the Merge, Cole developed the ability to form a new body around himself, a Golem made of rock! Using his Golem, Cole can form weapons, such as swords and staves out of stone, increases his strength even further, and acts like armour, even protecting Cole from Nya’s trident. The golem only stays around as long as Cole is concentrating, and he can remove it at will. His connection to his power, and his overall toughness, allowed him to upgrade his Golem form after touching the Weapon of Desolation! If he doesn’t feel like making an entire body, he can simply create gauntlets to clash against Oni.

Metal Manipulation

Cole also has controlled metal on a few occasions, despite Metal being its own Elemental Power (it seems like this is a pattern…). In his Golem form, he telekinetically lifted and moved a section of Imperium’s walls, and even telekinetically melted its edge to re-fuse it to the rest of Imperium. Years later, Cole has used his power over metal to reforge a broken sword, and create chains long enough to wrap around and restrain a kaiju-sized Oni warrior.

True Potential

DID SOMEBODY SAY POTENTIAL?

The first step to mastering a higher level of Spinjitzu, the True Potential of an Elemental Master is a sight to behold. By unlocking one’s heart and overcoming their personal obstacles holding them back, an Elemental Master becomes one with their element, their body becoming pure Elemental Energy, expanding their powers.

Zane’s True Potential lets him fly, shoot beams of pure ice out of his chest and create massive explosions of ice. He used his True Potential to save his friends from Treehorns and their queen, and against the Serpentine, unlocked when Zane discovered his past as a Nindroid.

Jay’s True Potential allows him to fly, increases his strength, lets him travel through electrical currents, and teleport around. He uses his True Potential to short out a roller coaster to save Nya’s life, and to flee from the Great Devourer, unlocked when he realised he didn’t need to pretend to be anyone else around Nya.

Cole’s True Potential increases his strength to mountainous heights, makes him practically indestructible, and lets him fly around. He used his True Potential to save his father’s life from falling stage lights, and to break down a door to interrupt Kai and Garmadon, unlocked when his father accepted and was proud of him for who he is.

And finally, Kai’s True Potential allows him to fly and envelops him in a shielding sphere of fire, enough to protect himself and Lloyd from a volcanic eruption. He used his True Potential to save Lloyd’s life in the Fire Temple, and tapped into it to melt Boreal the Ice Dragon, unlocked when Kai realised it was not his destiny to become the Green Ninja, but Lloyd’s.

Dragon Form

When all hope seemed lost, the Ninja discovered a new power: With a jump up, kick back, whip around and spin, the Ninja unlocked their Dragon Form! The Dragon Form is the highest form of Elemental Energy, Creation’s counterpart to Destruction’s Oni Form. The Dragon Form enhances the Ninja with Golden Power, forming glowing wings and armour.

The Dragon Form grants the Ninja flight (obviously), but also a bunch of new powers. They can instantly destroy the Vengestone Warriors, and become immune to the suppressing effects of Vengestone. They can purify the corruption of the Overlord by channeling their power into the Golden Weapons, and their strength is comparable to that of the Oni Form. Lloyd’s Oni Form was strong enough to easily overpower the Overlord, and Garmadon’s Oni Form was capable of defeating Lord Mogra after he buffed himself with Two Moon Tea.

In their Dragon Forms, the Ninja combined their Golden Weapons and destroyed them, unleashing a massive blast to contend with the Overlord and releasing their Elemental Powers, creating the Golden Ultra Dragon to defeat him once and for all.

The Ninja don’t use Dragon Forms after Crystalized, but these are their absolute peaks, and should be included. In addition, the Secret World of the Ninja specifically described the Dragon Form as being ‘unlocked’, and the sets show Dragon Form Ninja alongside regular Ninja, supporting the idea that the Dragon Forms aren’t just a one and done.

Draconus Form
(Inapplicable)

After Lloyd’s experience in the Ritual of Unrooting, he unlocked his Draconus Form, an ability connected to the Source Dragon of Life. The other Ninja can access this form via their connection to Lloyd. In Draconus Form, the Ninja have their speed and agility boosted and become strong enough to destroy Elemental Monsters while they’re taking energy from the Weapon of Desolation. The user sprouts wings, claws and a tail, allowing them to fly freely and defend themselves against the acid and hot tar of the Elemental Monsters.

In the Kai VS Tahu blog, the Draconus Form was brand new and had little elaboration aside from the fact that the Ninja needed to be close in proximity to Lloyd to use it. However, Dragons Rising Season 4 has elaborated on the form. Not only is assuming the form draining, but the Ninja cannot access Draconus Form without Lloyd doing it first. Thus, this form is unusable in this bout.

Ghost Form (Cole)
(Inapplicable)

After staying too long in Yang’s haunted temple, Cole was turned into a ghost! As a ghost, Cole’ skin becomes ghostly green, and he is completely intangible. He can phase through solid objects, and become tangible again through intense concentration. His Elemental Powers aren’t hampered by his new form, leaving him still capable of Spinjitzu, Airjitzu, using his Earth Punch or controlling Earth.

Fitting for the season subtitled Possession, Cole can possess anything. He possessed a keyhole to unlock a door, possessed snow to become a golem, and even possessed Zane’s Ice Mech to boost its speed. When he concentrates, Cole can even turn invisible and levitate. Despite being, you know, a ghost, Cole still gives off body heat, and can be detected in thermal vision, and is visible to paranormal scanners even when invisible.

His biggest weakness as a ghost? Water. Due to water’s flexible, constantly moving nature, a significant amount of water will instantly kill him. Vengestone can also disable his ghost powers, and the aquatic mineral Deepstone will also suppress his ghostly powers, and can kill him in the right form.

Cole can only stay as a ghost for so long without a body before he starts to drift off to the Departed Realm, and during the Day of the Departed, Cole regained his body in the Rift of Return. However, Cole can’t regain this form at will, and thus is inapplicable, but a very significant part of his story.

P.I.X.A.L.

During the Overlord’s Nindroid crisis, the Ninja met P.I.X.A.L., a robot just like Zane. After giving up half his power source to save her, P.I.X.A.L. became vital to the Ninja team, and the love of Zane’s life. For a time, her consciousness was uploaded into Zane’s head and assisted the Ninja. While she was in Zane’s head, she could advise him on what to do, warn Zane about threats coming from behind him, reroute his power, and analyse images, even determining the correct way through mazes. She’s even detected over five hundred ghosts at once, and analyzed the pattern in a zoetrope in the First Spinjitzu Master’s tomb.

P.I.X.A.L. can identify the source of energy surges – even temporal ones, scan people to learn their identity, and work on Zane’s head, even helping to unscramble his damaged neural pathways, and can isolate the source of someone hacking into Zane. She has communicated with Zane’s Falcon, and used it to communicate with Misako.

During the Hands of Time’s scheme, P.I.X.A.L. built herself a new body and escaped Zane’s head, becoming the new Samurai X. While she is no longer in Zane’s head, she still helps the Ninja, even from afar, such as remotely piloting Destiny’s Bounty during the Merge.

Falcon

Zane’s old robotic friend, and created by Dr. Julien, the Falcon is an indispensable help to the Ninja team (until the writers forgot about it). It often leads the Ninja to good fortune or inform them of important events, such as bringing them to the Destiny’s Bounty, leading them to Lloyd’s treehouse fortress, or leading Zane back to his past and revealing that he is a Nindroid.

The Falcon is connected to Zane more than just symbolically, able to relay what it sees on its visor to Zane, and share its perspective with Falcon Vision, helping Zane get a bird’s eye view of the situation (ha ha), or counter hallucinations. It can even play pre-recorded sounds.

Golden Ultra Dragon

No relation to the Ultra Dragon.

In a last ditch effort to prevent the Overlord from controlling the powers of Creation, the Ninja  combined their powers and destroyed the Golden Weapons, summoning the Golden Ultra Dragon. The Golden Ultra Dragon is the manifestation of the Ninja’s powers and the powers of the Golden Weapons. It can fly, use its tail for melee attacks, and has control over Fire, Earth, Lightning and Ice. It froze the Overlord solid and burned him into solid rock, and dodged his lightning-like Darkness. As a Dragon it can even enter the Ethereal Divide to travel between Dimensions, Golden Ultra even does this himself in the 15th Anniversary Music Video.

The Golden Ultra Dragon is extremely powerful. After a brief battle, the Golden Ultra Dragon combined its powers to freeze the Overlord solid, and shattered him with a swipe of its tail, defeating him once and for all.

Initially, the Ninja lost their powers after summoning the Golden Ultra Dragon, but years later, when another Devourer attacked, the Ninja were able to summon it using four Elemental Lanterns and a summoning circle, and used it to destroy the new Devourer by forcing its mouth open and firing a blast of Elemental Power into it. This required intense concentration to maintain, but as a bonus, the Ninja’s powers returned to them after they were done.

Scaling

Elemental Masters

The Ninja are consistently among the strongest Elemental Masters in the realms, competing in not just one, but two separate tournaments between the various masters

Villains

The Ninja have fought just about every villain ranging from Garmadon to Nahdahkhan to Aspheera to Forbidden 5. While many of these villains may have been a great challenge for them at the time, by the time we reach the later seasons P.I.X.A.L is 1v1-ing The Preeminent who they had no shot at fighting seasons earlier. As we know Zane could even destroy the Overlord, and with Dragon Form the Ninja very concretely scale Overlord who is much stronger than basically any other villain here

The Green Ninja
& Golden Power

The Ninja at their peaks should be able to match the godlike power of Golden Weapons, Lloyd and The First Spinjitzu Master. Kai himself can just hold the Golden Armour, while Zane withstood its energy for a substantial amount of time when he destroyed the Overlord. While the Golden Armour was weakened by Zane and that’s why Kai was able to simply hold it, it’s very clearly downscaling. The Ninja may also be able to downscale Base/Conduit Lloyd, as Kai briefly held his own against Nokt (While Nokt wielded Lloyd’s Elemental Power), and Cole can hold the Weapon of Desolation which later killed* Lloyd after he stabilized it. With Dragon Form, they have clear scaling to the Oni Form/Overlord, the latter of which stalemated the FSM. It’s also consistent that the FSM and Overlord are within the range of individual Source Dragons, which would place them clearly above The Strength of the Dragon Cores.

Lloyd

The Golden Weapons

The First Spinjitzu Master

Miscellaneous

There are a great many miscellaneous Characters in Ninjago, that the Ninja would scale to for all the aforementioned reasons. While they do scale to individual Source Dragons through Overlord and the FSM, they do not scale to their collective might. If you want an explanation for how/why they scale to Chima, that can be found in depth in G1’s Kai Vs Tahu.

Chima

Weaknesses

The Ninja of Spinjitzu are quite impressive but they’ve got their share of times when they’ve gotten down in protecting the realm Ninjago. All the Ninja have gotten captured whether by Dragon Hunters or Ronin who managed to get the drop on all the Ninja including Lloyd and Nya, capturing them (might as well make him the top tier of the verse). In addition they have their vulnerabilities such as getting depowered by Vengestone, getting their Souls absorbed, or vulnerable to the Darkness of the Oni. The Ninja also need steel bravery to summon elemental dragons, otherwise they can’t be summoned, and the longer they use it the more trouble they have maintaining it.  As for Individual weaknesses:

Kai: As befitting the fire user stereotype, Kai can be quite a hothead. While not fully controlled by rage he is prone to making mistakes out of frustration, or anger whenever a person he cares about gets insulted right in front of him. He also can get pretty cocky at points which may lead him to fumbling an important mission or go into a fight overconfident.

Jay: Jay is put as the annoying one by his team mainly due to the fact that he’s …how should we put this? A doomer- He’s always the one to complain. Jay is one to either be sarcastic or express the most cynicism when the Ninja are struggling to protect Ninjago. He’s always the most doubtful of a plan, or the first one to point out how screwed the team may be based on some valid evidence, but it does show a weaker will compared to his teammates. He’s also the laziest member of the group by far. If he’s hungry and the team needs to attend to something important, Jay would rather eat, at least as his first instinct.

Zane: Out of all the individual members of the team, Zane does have the most notable and damning weaknesses. As a Nindroid, Zane has his limitations to his technology, such as being vulnerable to self-destruction via an overload of energy, severe half a season’s worth of malfunction if his neural pathways are damaged, and even being hacked. A skilled hacker can access his system and completely shut down Zane there and then leave him out of commission. The same can happen if Zane takes too much damage as evidence with his fight with Mr.E.

Cole: Cole’s main personal weakness is that he is prone to the sin of Gluttony. He has a love of food that can leave him prone to distraction at best and be a hindrance at worst. One time Dareth tried to help the ninja by giving them tools to escape prison in a cake, which Cole had eaten all of, the tools included. He has gotten better since but get him hungry enough and he may relapse. For a more serious weakness, Cole is extremely dedicated to his team, perhaps to a fault, and worries that any mistakes made are his responsibility, and that he’ll let his teammates down somehow. His love for his families has also led him to act in anger without thinking. When the Finders got their souls stolen by the Forbidden Five, Cole rushed into fighting them without thinking and got his soul drained, too.

Before the Verdict

TMNT Lightning Round

For a series as popular and discussed as TMNT ends up being, there’s a fair amount of misinformation for it that tends to pop up in convos, some of which might happen without even realizing it. To that end, this BtV is a quick correction on several (not all, but ones we considered worth directly taking the time to address) of these to make things more clear.

Mirage Time Explosions

This is a bit of a weird piece of TMNT media so strap in folks. In the 1990 comic issue Turtles Take Time, Donnie receives a time cube from a character named Renet. Whereupon activating the cube, the turtles travel back in time to various time periods ranging from the age of pirates, to the age of knights, and even the dawn of time and fight prehuman primates. No you’re not being put under any Genjutsu here, this is all real.

At one point when the turtles meet themselves from before they activated the cube and before they’re about to die, a timequake happens which creates some sort of explosion and sends them as eggs near a crocodile. The timequakes are very weird themselves as when it happens it’s really unclear if the turtles take any sort of damage from the explosions themselves. It’s more like time itself gets all fucked because there’s two versions of the turtles fighting at once. Though every time the turtles make it out they do crash on impact in whatever time period they end up stumbling across so at the very least that part counts as a durability feat.

The most notable thing that happens in the story where after the turtles kill humanity before it even started (yes that is the exact context), the last time quake makes the turtles go through spaghettification, and takes them back to the very beginning of creation itself, where the big bang is shown in the next page.

So the turtles just survive the big bang and thus have universe level durability? Well…the story doesn’t actually show them directly surviving the big bang, as the next panel, before they reach it, directly takes them back to their own time. At most it would end up being them surviving the spaghettification prior, which is impressive enough in its own right, but nowhere near as strong as it’s suggested as.

As an aside, it’s worth mentioning that this story, along with several others around the same time, were part of Mirage’s “Guest Era”, bringing on several creatives outside of Mirage Studios to work on Turtles stories before City at War. With the exception of two Mirage staff stories (and a three-parter referenced in one of them), none of these issues have ever been referenced in Mirage after the fact and had no influence on how the Turtles were written once the canon issues came back in. The bigger issue is obviously just that the feat’s inapplicable, but the story itself was also never considered canon to begin with.

Mirage Mountain Busting

As mentioned when going over the Turtles’ usage of chi, Don’s could overpower a weapon capable of puncturing holes in mountains when used alongside the same person whose own chi blew them up on their own. While this feat is fairly blatant on its own, there isn’t any particular applicability to it in a versus scenario, since the act of weaponizing their chi isn’t something the Turtles had done at a single point in their comic history. The person whose chi was siphoned off for the initial feat says that their kind was known for being spiritual, and despite that couldn’t break the weapon themselves and had to bury it instead, which outright suggests that their spiritual and physical strength are not linked. Triceraton scientists also believe that the weapon has enough power to single-handedly turn the tide in their ongoing war, which would suggest it’s stronger than the Turtles given that Triceratons on their own are already considered physical powerhouses compared to them. And lastly, there simply is not a single feat in Mirage that suggests the Turtles are fighting with mountain busting power, functionally every positive and negative showing they have would be considered a major anti-feat by comparison.

Tengu Shredder’s Eclipse

Arguably the single most prominent feat brought up in TMNT scaling, and one of the biggest arguments for the Turtles being able to go well beyond their expected paygrade, is the Tengu Shredder creating a solar eclipse during his takeover of Feudal Japan in 2003. With how commonplace the feat’s brought up, you might expect the issue to be in regards to how far its chainscaling goes, and the argument being that it’s applied further than it should be.

No, the problem with the feat is that it objectively does not happen.

Shredder does not cause a solar eclipse, because he doesn’t move the moon. Literally minutes after the same flashback scene shows the darkened sun set, we see a shot of the moon proper, not indefinitely covering the sun like it’d have to be otherwise, just being the moon out in the open. Shredder didn’t push the moon in front of the sun, he used his magic to stop the sun’s light from reaching (part of, plenty of it still seeped through) the planet. Which, in hindsight, makes more sense anyway, because the initial animation of the so-called “eclipse” doesn’t match how eclipses going in front of the sun are actually depicted anyway.

It’s not even a different episode or a distant shot having new context that people missed, it’s literally during the exact same flashback sequence only a few minutes apart from each other. That’s how little was checked before misinformation spread to the degree it has, and it’s not the only feat of its kind, simply the most prominent by magnitudes.

Cosmic TMNT

Across the series of TMNT, there are multitude of cosmic feats across each continuity, however that doesn’t exactly mean the Turtles scale. Case in point-

Armaggon

By the end of IDW’s original run on Ninja Turtles, Donatello accidentally brought a Megalodon to the end of time where nothing exists, creating Armaggon, a giant shark pissed off at its creation, so it decides to eat all of time. Armaggon consumes QNA, the Quantanuleic Acid all beings possess, allowing it to grow bigger. By the end of the run, Armaggon was able to consume the 79th Dimension, which exists outside of time. Despite all of this, there isn’t any reason for the Turtles to properly scale to him. Not only are future versions of the Turtles unable to stop Armaggon on their own, but the Time Lords are incapable of it as well, and they are a degree greater in power than the Turtles, to the point they were able to hold off Armaggon briefly. So the question is: how did they beat Armaggon? Well Donatello had to use his and brothers’ original life talismans, allowing the radiant gravity to bind him. However they also needed to use the Impermanence Sigil, to shrink Armaggon down a size. It took Venus to also sacrifice herself in order to let Armaggon consume the Sigil.

Overall this means that there’s no reason for the Turtles to scale to Armaggon. While someone could say, “what about QNA?” QNA exists in higher realms of reality, but there’s nothing to suggest that QNA applies to physical power of that level. Everyone has QNA, but that doesn’t mean they are physically that strong. While Tong’s energy is similar to QNA, it isn’t the same thing, and there’s nothing to suggest that the radiant gravity used to bind Armaggon is applicable to AP,  not to mention he was shrunken to a small size beforehand, so it’s likely that it wouldn’t apply to the Turtles’ QNA in the first place.

Wrym

Look at this dude

In episode 3 Season 4 of 2012 Casey accidentally unleashes a being from the 5th dimension called Wrym from a cube (what is it with the turtles’ luck with Cubes). This guy can destroy planets and disperse stars to 1812 Overture and being someone from the 5th dimension (which is corroborated by his prison itself being 5-dimensional) he could potentially have access to power above the Masters of Spinjitzu. So the 2012 Turtles fight him and scale to him right? GGS Ninjago?

You would think that, except the Turtles get their shells handed to them on a Pizza plate during this fight. With only Leonardo landing a singular hit on him and even then he kind of no-sells it and regenerates his head. Also he was said by Fugitoid to basically rule the universe with no opposition had Casey not wished to never open the cube in the first place. So narratively speaking it makes zero sense for the Turtles to scale to Wrym at all.

Verdicts

Archie VS Ninjago

(Brobuscus)

Before we start, let’s lay down what the Ninja Turtles are working against in this match. Surely, one of the Ninja’s previous outing is still fresh on your mind, but for a refresher, the Ninja are masters of combat, able to fight armies of skeletons, snakes, and so on, and are incredibly skilled with their Elemental Powers. Jay is strong enough to crush boulders with his bare fists and punch through twenty bricks stacked on top of each other, Zane froze the massive queen of the Treehorns, a monster tens of times larger than the Ninja, Cole’s Earth Punch shook an entire floating island, and Kai’s fire powered Rusty, a giant robot that can split clouds, this feat in particular reaching yields of 73.99 Kilotons of TNT. As far as speed goes, a good chunk of Ninjago’s cast can dodge Jay’s lightning, and Jay himself outran Wisp the Lightning Dragon, which is noted as being able to fly at lightspeed. This is around Season 1, by the way, so Jay, and in turn the other Ninja, likely upscale this by a ton. Throw in the Ninja’s myriad of weapons, and the ability to battle monsters and other ninja masters who are thousands of years old, and there’s a lot for the Ninja Turtles to go against. So does this particular, arguably more niche version of the Heroes in a Half Shell have what it takes? …Well we’re only at the first one, so the answer should be pretty obvious, yeah?

Yeah, compared to the other continuities, Archie’s version of the Ninja Turtles is…honestly not all that impressive. Sure they can smash through metal, and Leatherhead smashed through a wall and multiple ceilings, but aside from that, they really don’t have much in terms of strength. Sure Future Krang is said to have “annihilated” a Planet, but it’s never described how he went about doing that, and there’s nothing to say he blew it up or anything like that. Even if you just said “Yeah, he blew it up” for generous reasons, the Ninja’s Golden Weapons were able to create a whole Star, so even the Ninja Turtles’ most generous scaling isn’t stacking up to Ninjago’s defenders. To be fair though, Leonardo deflecting a light beam with his sword should be able to let the Turtles match the Ninja in terms of reaction speed. Unfortunately for them, the Ninja are still completely outpacing them not just with running speed, but with abilities like Spinjitzu or Airjitzu, giving them the mobility they need to outpace the Turtles even if they’re able to react to their attacks.

The only real major talking point for Archie’s continuity is the Turnstone, which allowed Donatello to become one with the universe and expand black holes. Quite the stark contrast from just smashing through walls, huh? Sounds like that should be enough for Donnie to win by himself, but there’s one tiny little problem: He can’t really control it. Using it drove him completely insane, to the point where he would’ve destroyed the universe with it if Samath hadn’t taken it from him. This essentially means that Donnie is arguably just as likely to kill his brothers with it by accident rather than kill the Ninja. Donnie himself notes he couldn’t control it, so it’s very likely he wouldn’t even use it in the first place.

And for the final nail in the coffin, you know how turtles are cold-blooded organisms? Yeah, really not a great position to be in against Kai’s heat or Zane’s ice. Zane’s ice is even able to put out Kai’s flames, the same flames that can turn a bunch of sand into glass and can melt the Golden Armor, made of the same material as the Golden Weapons. In order to reach that kind of heat, Kai’s fire must have a temperature of almost sixteen million degrees Celsius, which is frankly just insane! And with the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu, Zane’s ice froze over the entire Never-Realm…a whole realm, frozen in ice, from one lone Ninja. So even with matching speed and a super vague and unreliable way of keeping up in power, the Turtles are still getting one-shotted by the Ninja’s Elemental Powers. Against the Ninja, Archie’s version of the Ninja Turtles just don’t have any way to keep up, securing the Ninja’s win for this round.

For being the same publisher as Archie Sonic, this ended up being a little underwhelming.

Mirage VS Ninjago

(Maddie Antiqua)

Despite being the most well known for being grounded versions of the Turtles, Mirage’s do have a notable edge over the other versions of the TMNT, in the sense of the first T being outdated. Volume 2 of Tales of the TMNT depicts a sizable amount of battles the Turtles went on in the 15 years they fought after killing the Shredder, being the one version of the Turtles whose present day selves are well into adulthood. They’re also a bit more impressive than their TMNT Adventures counterparts physically, being able to survive the Foot HQ exploding and damage a Complete Carnage clone when he had the full power of a collapsed building.

…Yeah they still obviously die to the Ninja here. Being really well experienced comic street tiers doesn’t actually change that they’re still comic street tiers dealing with Star busters, and their overall really simple toolkits and lack of solid speed showings mean there’s very little they can actually do to utilize their experience and skill. They could technically try to get higher with how often Turtles crossovers have them aura mog their future adaptations, but on their own merits, they’re about as dead as Volume 4 is.

2012 VS Ninjago

(Zeostorm)

In terms of stats, 2012’s Turtles are strong enough to cut through Krangdroids, survive building-sized explosions, and fight building-sized monsters or mutants that can create earthquakes worth around 93.95 tons of TNT, and scale to a storm being created at around 2.5 Kilotons of TNT. But their biggest showing is scaling to the Chimera, who survived a mountain blowing up, getting a yield of about 73 Kilotons of TNT. And much like other versions, they’re fast enough to dodge missiles or laser beams, putting them roughly in the relativistic range. Unfortunately, nothing still compares to the Ninja’s continent-threatening villains or star busting Golden Weapons.

Looking at their arsenals, the Turtles are bringing armored vehicles and wingsuits for flight, matching the Ninja’s own similar options. Donnie bringing in Metalhead can add to their support, and Leo’s Healing Hands could heal them from certain injuries the Ninja could inflict. Unfortunately, they still lack many options to get past the Ninja running circles around them and being tough enough to survive what the Turtles can throw at them. The only weapon that could serve as a wincon is the Omni-Disintegrator, which can destroy anything at a subatomic level. The Ninja have never encountered anything like that before, so one shot from that could tip the scales. But the problem is it’s highly unlikely they’d immediately resort to this before fighting the Ninja while everything the Ninja do can one tap the Turtles. The Healing Hands can’t heal from super grievous wounds, and would not hold up to getting burned by Kai’s fire or frozen by Zane’s ice.

While the Turtles have excellent training with martial artists like Splinter and fighting Shredder, the speed and overwhelming power of the Ninja completely overturn them. The Spinjitzu Masters are gonna have turtle soup today.

2003 VS Ninjago

(Rina Antiqua)

Despite being the most faithful adaptations of the Mirage continuity, the 2003 Turtles fare up a lot better than them… though, not in their base forms. The Turtles have a plethora of great skill showings and statements, from disarming foes, catching swords, stamina to last days, and are even adept in all of their own weapons, which are likely better skill showings than most other versions. Speed wise, there’s dodging bullets, RPG’s, arrows, etc., but of course, we have to talk about lasers. And surprisingly enough, there is one possible laser feat that meets most criteria as early as Season 1, being Baxter Stockman’s security lasers. While it may be a bit roundabout, these lasers are referred to by the actual definition in the Dreamwave comics meant to adapt the episode (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation), and have shown reflection there. While they may explode, they show no force and are a consistent straight line within the original episode. It may be debatable, but if one were to accept it, this would clock in at about 39% the speed of light.

In movement speed, the turtles can amplify it with their chi to reach speeds matching that of Hisomi-Shisho, which can clock in at Mach 2 to Mach 5. And as for physical strength, with Chi amplification, feats like smashing large stone pillars or vaporizing a river are well above what most continuities are packing. At their best, Banrai is stated to be able to shatter mountains, clocking in at 750.6 Kilotons to 6.4 Megatons of TNT. Suffice to say though, none of these stack up to the other ninjas, as even without their highest ends, Nadakhan lifting half of Ninjago into the sky at 133.84 Teratons is enough to one shot all the turtles at once, and the ninja likewise have their own relativistic to even faster than light speeds that apply not just to reaction speed, but movement speed as well, letting them literally run circles around the turtles. They don’t have any chance normally.

Of course, there’s the matter of their Dragon forms, which is their Chi powers manifested to the max. These draconic states are strong enough to combat the Tengu Shredder in his own dragon form, which is above his base form. Impressive, given this base form was not only overpowering the entire cast, but was able to block out the sun back in the far past. While it may not be a natural solar eclipse as explained already, blocking sunlight from hitting the planet (at most) would need energy as high as 41 Megatons of TNT. Much better than before… and yet still not enough to matter. Nadakhan lifting half of Ninjago into the sky would outmatch even the highest end by over a million times, and if one were to still interpret Tengu Shredder’s feat as actually moving the moon and causing a solar eclipse, this would fall short of the Golden Weapons being able to create a star. Even downscaling from this feat would be enough to fry the dragon forms in one hit, and team Ninjago certainly have the range and firepower to combat and eventually hit the dragon forms despite their large size and flight.

While they fare better overall, the 2003 turtles are still no match for Ninjago in raw power and speed, and none of their various skill showcases, vehicles, chi powers, or mystic equipment can do much to turn the tides.

IDW VS Ninjago

(Spirit)

Please read the IDW comics, they are amazing. With that out of the way, let’s kill the Turtles (again)! In terms of base stats, the Turtles are reacting to sniper rounds, energy attacks, lasers, emp blasts, etc. However the laser and emp stuff wouldn’t be in tandem movement, so they won’t be getting anywhere near the speed Team Ninjago are capable of. In terms of power is where it’s a bit interesting. The Turtles can harm the likes of Slash, who survived a nuclear bomb that went off inside him. This feat comes in at 615 Kilotons – 29 Megatons of TNT. While impressive, compared to Ninjago, this is at most matching their lower ends of power. However when applying the Kuji-Kiris, they scale to Gohano creating the Biblical Flood. THE. BIBLICAL. FLOOD. Which would get up to 1.6 Teratons of TNT. so not bad. This allows them to beat Ninjago’s lowest ends, but their mid-ends completely beat out the Turtles, With feats like Nahdakhan lifting Half of Ninjago (133.84 Teratons of TNT) or FSM splitting it (344 Exatons of TNT) and of course the Star Level Golden Weapons.

In terms of abilities, while the Turtles have good ones like time traveling and time stop, Ninjago overall have more variety in powers that completely allow control of the area, even having their own form of time stop. And the Turtles wouldn’t take advantage as they have no way to close the gap in power. The Kuji-Kiris are useful, but they are more for the team rather than against the enemy, and require the Turtles to activate with hand gestures. And with Team Ninjago having far greater speed, the Turtles realistically wouldn’t have time to use the Cuts. The Turtles can Astral Project, but that’s about as useful as a Walmart Discount Card.

Rise VS Ninjago

(Adam)

The Rise versions of the Turtles are amongst the strongest out there, embracing and using their Mystic Abilities to the fullest… but they still come up short in stats. The Ninja more then stack up with their mid end feats and beyond as the Rise TMNT’s best feats reach Multi-Cont to Planetary ranges in power. For a direct number’s comparison, the Krang exploding part of the Technodrome reached 15.9 Gigatons of TNT and the explosion that killed Shredder reached 22.7 Petatons of TNT. This pales in comparison to even the FSM splitting Ninjago in half, which reaches 344 Exatons of TNT, not to mention everyone’s favourite Star Feat. As for speed, the Rise Turtles have dodged lasers that don’t break the rules to qualify them for being lightspeed, but these feats are few and far between in the series and are upscaled far less than Jay keeping up with Wisp. Stats very clearly go to Ninjago.

In terms of equipment, things start looking up for the TMNT. Donatello is carrying this category for them with his multitude of Battle Shells, weapons, and even weirder tools like the Mind Control Boom Box or his Shell’s ability to age things up. However, the Ninja have their own myriad of tools to bring in, one of the most useful being the Technoblades. Donatello has faced hacking before but most of his counters need to be put into play after the fact. With no innate counters, most of Donatello’s deadlier tech can be taken over by the Ninja and used against the Turtles. Equipment like the Elemental Blades and Golden Weapons cannot be hacked and can melt through Donatello’s arsenal. The more esoteric weapons can also counteract Donatello’s own weirder abilities. The Reversal Time Blade is a very explicit counter to being aged up as de-aging someone is one of the few things Kai ever used it for.

The turtles’ main weapons could at least offer some leeway for them. Raph’s Tonfa could make constructs for proper defense, reshape those constructs into whatever he wants, and even grow in size to scrap with the Dragons; Donnie’s Tech Bo offers a shit ton of uses on the battle through its multitude of weapons and tracking device, Mikey’s Kusari Fundo could provide even better usage of capture than the Chain rifles, and Leonardo’s Odachi allows for portal travel that could make up for the lack of movement speed in comparison to the Ninja.

As for abilities, Hamato Ninpo seems like more than a match for the Ninja’s Elements. It gives them access to further enhanced versions of their mystic powers without the use of their tools. Donatello being able to create his weapons out of energy fully counters the Technoblade’s previous hacking and even melting his gear. Raphael can now clone himself and put numbers in their favor and even teleport himself out of attacks even when they pierce him, without retaining damage. Michelangelo can create Portals through time and Leonardo can mess people up by teleporting them around against their will. Even better, all the turtles can remake and duplicate their weapons from scratch… but it’s still not enough.

The Ninja’s Elemental Powers still more than make up the difference. The most obvious one is Kai’s Fire, which can get hot enough to melt the Golden Weapons down into liquid. The same weapons that survived being inside of a star and nuclear fission. While the Turtles have survived high temperatures before, this well exceeds their limit and would vaporize them. Keep in mind Kai did this casually with just two fireballs. Zane’s ice was cold enough to freeze most of New Ninjago City and the entire Never Realm. This level of cold, especially against naturally cold blooded creatures like the Turtles, would make the environment incredibly hard to fight in and leave the turtles unable to thaw themselves if frozen. The turtles also don’t have any impressive showings for being electricity resistant. Jay’s electricity reaching such a high voltage with a constant flow would stun and likely fry them. Sadly, Cole’s powers don’t have as much instant win potential as the others, but being able to cause earthquakes and manipulate the battleground would serve useful here all the same. Rise’s incarnation of the Ninja Turtles just don’t seem capable of taking this category either.

While they definitely have the heart and stand far more of a chance than some of the other incarnations covered, they just come up short in everything. Whether it’s through overpowering them, freezing, or turning them into flaming hot soup, the Ninja will put an end to the Hamato Clan’s legacy.

1987 VS Ninjago

(Serge)

Out of all the iterations, you might be surprised by the ones that stand the best chance against the ninjas are the 1987 versions. Well why is that? First let’s go over stats. The best feat for durability the 87 turtles have would be Rat King and Leatherhead surviving an explosion to the face that covered a large area of the sewers. While impressive, it fails to even match some of the lower end feats the Ninjas obtain and is blown out of the park when considering the golden weapons making a star. Speed is a bit of a different matter, while most of the lasers in the cartoon fail to meet the criteria for lightspeed, mainly because all of them most of the time blow up, the lasers Mikey dodges from two foot soldiers can give us the best estimate of their speed, with the feat reaching 92.82% SoL, which while impressive would still fall a bit short behind the Ninjas and their full on lightspeed feats. But that’s only covering reaction speed, as when talking about movement speed the turtles are quite frankly sitting ducks with them having little to no movement speed feats. This is an issue as the ninjas would be lightspeed in movements due to Jay outrunning the elemental dragon. Keep in mind this is also not even considering the amps in speed the Ninjas have which would make speed tip to their favor even more and make 87 just as slower.

Now we can move onto their abilities and arsenal which is the main reason 87 is able to stand as much of a chance as they do. Unlike the other iterations, the 87 turtles, or really just Donnie, have the means to end the fight despite the massive gap in AP. With the Time Stopper the turtles could freeze the ninjas in time and make them unable to fight at all, the personality swapper if landed could make it so either the ninjas just don’t want to fight anymore or if anything turn them against the other ninjas and join the turtles, or be left in another dimension with the time dimensional sword if they could get them through a portal. With these gadgets it is possible for the turtles to get a win, but the key word is possible here. While these gadgets are nice, it still doesn’t negate the advantages in stats the Ninjas have.

The speed advantage alone would make it so Donnie would not have enough time to pull out the right tool and use it. Even if he pulled it off there’s still nothing stopping the Ninjas just avoiding them, especially when both the Time Stopper and the Personality Swapper shoot out projectile attacks and must land on the target for them to get affected by them. Plus the Ninja have their own means of Time shenanigans with the Reversal Time blade and especially the 4th Dimensional scroll providing means of keeping up with the Time Stopper if not outright surpassing it in the Scroll’s case. While the dimensional sword is useful, there’s the issue that the turtles need to get the Ninja through the portals in the first place and close it, which if you have been paying attention with stats you would know that’s just not happening. Even if it did, The Ninja could summon just Golden Ultra Dragon and make their way back. There is also another issue that turtles have to worry about is the fact all these gadgets and weapons can be destroyed. If the turtles pull out any of their dangerous gear there’s nothing stopping say Kai just burning the weapon to the point it melts or Zane just freezing the weapon or the turtle holding it. It’s also not just Kai and Zane, all four ninjas can also just use their Technoblades to hack any and all of Donnie’s tech and disable them, making it so the ninjas could just counter the purple turtle with a wave of their weapon.

Also it’s once again important to note that really only Donnie has these options and the one who pulls them out most often. Once the Ninjas see that he’s the most dangerous turtle due to his tech they could easily target him and take him out before he does serious damage. Once Donnie is out of the picture the 87 turtles are once again back into a situation where they are unable to match the ninjas in stats and can not avoid the sheer heat Kai produces or Zane just freezing all the turtles to the point they can’t fight.

Overall, while 87 have the opportunity to win the fight, they’re still just too slow to use them properly and the ninjas would be smart enough to target Donnie and his gear, meaning once again the ninjas take the win.

Conclusion

“We are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We strike hard, and fade away, into the night.”

Advantages:

  • Mirage’s Turtles have a sizable experience edge
  • Multiple continuities are generally more skilled
  • 2003’s Dragon forms have a notable size advantage
  • Rise Raph’s Ninpo gives the Turtles a numbers advantage through cloning
  • ‘87 Donatello’s tech is technically capable of cheesing a hax win
  • Would define 80’s childhoods and many more in the coming decades

Disadvantages:

  • AP stomped across the board regardless of version
  • Slower movement speeds regardless of reactions
  • No counters to simply getting temperature diffed by Kai and Zane’s elements
  • ‘87 Donatello’s aging ray is completely countered by the Reversal Time Blade
  • ‘87 Donnie can’t clutch the 1v4 to actually win off his hax options
  • Completely destroyed by their namesakes in ERB

“As iron sharpens iron, brother sharpens brother.”

Advantages:

  • Vastly stronger than every TMNT version no matter the comparison
  • Faster movement speeds across the board and faster-to-matching reactions otherwise
  • Kai’s heat and Zane’s ice can one-shot regardless of stats
  • Match, counter or outhax nearly every option the TMNT have
  • Are effectively 4v1ing ‘87 Donnie given the other three’s lack of options
  • Comparable skill to most versions
  • Doing all this with only 4/6 of their members
  • Vincent Tong loved Kai VS Tahu

Disadvantages:

  • Less experienced than the Mirage Turtles
  • Could hypothetically lose to ‘87 Donatello’s tech if his win-cons were to land
  • Lego Ideas is in support of AI (this happened right when we were working on this, goddammit)

For as much as there is to cover in this match, this result was honestly really straightforward. While the exact gap in stats and abilities shuffles a bit with each incarnation, the core theme is the same: the Ninja simply overwhelm the Turtles in stats by too many magnitudes for them to attempt to compete, and their abilities only ensure their victory by making their speed edge unchallengeable and giving more options for even their most basic attacks to one-shot the Turtles, outright ignoring stats entirely. To the Turtles’ credit, some incarnations have worthy gadgets and abilities that could give the Ninja some challenge, with ‘87 Donatello in particular having a lot of hypothetical win-conditions. But at the end of the day, the gap’s too wide for them to be anything more than hypothetical, and the Ninja will simply always land their options well before the Turtles would get a chance for theirs.

For as much as the TMNT tried to rise to the occasion, they found their win against the ninja was little more than a mirage. The Ninja just had to Jump Up, Kick Back, Whip Around, and Win.

The winners are Kai, Jay, Cole, and Zane, the Masters of Spinjitzu!

ayo what the fuck

Yeah, so turns out the ‘87 show had an OVA mini-series and manga based on it. The material here explicitly isn’t canon to the 1987 series (its version of the Turtles are outright different characters in Battle Nexus), doesn’t qualify as proper supporting evidence for the ‘87 Turtles (the main things they get are equipment exclusive to this media), and doesn’t qualify as a main incarnation (it wasn’t even properly localized and is barely acknowledged outside of background cameos), so it was excluded from the main verdict and reasonably wouldn’t ever be factored in an episode of Death Battle. But given how batshit it gets and how little extra material it was to research, we felt that we should cover it anyway.

In this OVA, the galaxy is threatened by an evil ancient being known as Dark Mu, contained in a crystal known as the dark mutastone. Most significantly, she is shown to be eradicating multiple stars at once from lightyears away while on Shredder and Kraang’s spaceship (272 Quettatons-25 KiloFOE). To combat her, the turtles team up with Crys-Mu, her light counterpart, and are given the Mutastones of light to counteract Dark-Mu’s power. The Mutastones give each of the turtles Super Mutation forms (that make all of them look eerily reminiscent of Wolverine) along with powerful weapons and attacks, with a 3 minute timer in this form each. But these transformations alone are not enough to defeat Dark Mu, and the turtles need to access an even higher form to do so. With a mere 100 second time limit, the turtles in their super forms are able to fuse into The Saint, a cosmic giant that can block and deflect attacks from Dark Mu in her prime, although needed Crys-Mu’s help to ultimately defeat her with their Mega Final Saint Break. Because of this, their super form massively upscales a level of strength that matches that of the ninja. Making this potentially the closest fight the turtles can wage against them. Let’s go more in depth.

Massively upscaling 2x Star level at the minimum would allow the turtles to match and potentially exceed the creation of a Star, even though the Ninja themselves upscale it with their own amps and Dragon Form, however if you were to account for the massive distance between Dark Mu and the Stars, treating it as an omnidirectional blast (Though Dark Mu does not destroy the ship it is inside, which contradicts this) it would reach 25 KiloFOE, more than enough to beat out the star. (They finally beat Season 2 Ninjago! We take the W Turtle Bros!)

This could render the Ninja without ways to bypass their durability virtually useless in this fight. Fortunately for them, however, the OVA turtles don’t have much to fall back on for speed, relying on ‘87 scaling as it’s a continuation of that continuity. As discussed before, the ‘87 turtles ultimately lacked the speed to keep up with the ninja, and while these should fare better due to their superior strength, they would ultimately leave themselves open to Kai’s fire and Zane’s ice, with Kai’s Fire reaching well into the ranges of millions of degrees while Zane (amped by Forbidden Spinjitzu) can create ice that even Kai’s heat cannot melt. Well and away being able to bypass the near complete lack of showings against Hot and Cold, not to mention the Ninja’s other options such as Kai’s Dark Chained Whip. This fight ultimately a much higher-diff win for Ninjago than any of the previous ones, and even one the turtles could win somewhat consistently in some circumstances.

…If you simply don’t account for the ends beyond Star. Even without considering the somewhat contentious universal interpretations of Realm related feats, The Ninja in their Dragon Form can match the First Spinjitzu Master, who created the Grasslands. According to Doc Wyatt (Series Co-creator), The Grasslands just contain infinite space and time (Said this completely unprompted btw). Not inconsistent when he’s stated that both the First Spinjitzu Master and The Overlord can take on Individual Source Dragons. The Source Dragons are much much stronger than the Dragon Cores which can stabilize the Universe spanning/destroying Mergequake Storm, and even hold back the convergence of Ninjago and the 16 Realms. This concretely puts them in the range of Universal.

With this end, the Ninja vastly outclassed the Turtles, even with the Solar System end of the Dark Mu feat, making it a complete stat stomp yet again. To give credit, the OVA Turtles did surpass every other end the Masters of Spinjitzu could muster in terms of power, which would force them to play a hax game to avoid getting one tapped on their lower ends. It’s a hax game the Ninja’d ultimately still win, but at least one that’d force them to give their all for.

You got…half of one, buddies.
