Nero, the young devil hunter and son of Vergil, employed by Devil May Cry

Hellboy, the hell-fire born agent and son of Azzael, employed by the B.R.P.D.

Part human, part demon, full awesome, these two may struggle with their inner demons (literally!), but they will rise up beyond them to fight for humanity and save the world. Despite a troublesome relationship with their fathers, with their special powerful arm, they’ll bring the fire and give hell to the demons that threaten the place they call home.

Will Hellboy show the young devil hunter his doom with his right hand or will Nero bring the devil within and show why he’ll never surrender? It’s time for a Death Battle!

Before We Start…

To address the elephant in the room, you’re likely aware of our old Nero vs Hellboy blog back in 2021 on the old G1 site before it got taken down. It spread way further than we were expecting, being scrutinized back and forth and has become rather infamous at this point. Straight to the point, it’s been 5 years since that blog came out and a lot of us on the team are really unhappy with how it was worded and presented and don’t really agree with the stances presented back then (this is made rather obvious with our recent Devil May Cry blogs).

So to that, we have decided to remake the blog from the ground up instead of simply copy pasting the old one. This matchup is beloved within the community and we want to represent it right and with as much care as possible. A lot of people didn’t really feel like Nero got a fair shake and that’s definitely unfortunate. We really hope the blog this time people feel he was treated much better than he was before.

That being said, while we are willing to listen to criticism, we do ask you to be constructive with any criticism you may have with this. While we are 100% willing to listen to responses, insults and aggression doesn’t help anyone and we’re more likely to listen if worded in a respectful and tasteful manner. There may be stances that change since our last DMC blog; opinions change, feats get discussed more and proper reevaluation is done. So don’t expect us to just copy paste old calculations and call it a day. We’re being serious when it’s a proper look through and listening to constructive criticism. Hellboy himself hasn’t had a proper blog since the old one, so we plan on giving him a fair (but honest) look too. So we really do hope you enjoy our updated takes on this MU.

At the end of the day, these are fictional characters and these blogs are made for fun with no stakes in them. We hope you take the time to enjoy our new perspective on these beloved characters.

For Nero, we will of course look through the Devil May Cry games, as well as the audio drama, the 2007 anime, novels, mangas, the Japanese and certain English guides and artbooks. All of these are canon as part of a single timeline. While we are aware of how…divisive it is, we’ll take a look at the Netflix show too for at least supplemental information. And though we have avoided it for a while due to it being a controversial thing in Vs, it should be fine under a soft composite and DMC5 canon Nero has shown up recently, so we are going to include the mobile game, Peak of Combat…sort of. You’ll see what we mean by the end of it.

For Hellboy, his primary source is of course his comics from Dark Horse created by Mike Mignola, as well as other comics that take place in the same universe. However, we’ll also take into consideration the movies, both live action and animated, the games and novels just for a comprehensive look at the character’s history.

We’ll of course take into account what’s considered “standard” for both of them, but also take into account any potential one offs just for a fun more in-depth look at the characters. No worries, we’ll make sure if any of them would decide/influence a verdict, we’ll let you know and talk about it more in-depth.

The only thing we’re going to say no to is of course crossovers like Injustice and Marvel vs Capcom because come on, we want to focus on both series’ history as they are. We hope you enjoy this blog!

Nero

Background

“From that day forth… my arm changed… and a voice echoed, “Power. Give me more power!”

  • Age:  Around 22-23 as of DMC5
  • Human/Demon Hybrid
  • Height: 190cm or 6’23’’
  • Occupation: Devil Hunter for Devil May Cry
  • Likes: Kyrie, taking care of orphans, his uncle
  • Dislikes: Being called deadweight, dice games, smoking
  • Pretty good at the guitar honestly

You’ve likely heard of it; haven’t you? The story of Sparda, a demon that rebelled against his own kind to fight for the side of good and protect humanity. In the city of Fortuna, there was a cult that worshipped the legendary Sparda himself. This cult is known as the Order of the Sword, and the family of Kyrie and Credo who were part of it discovered an abandoned baby who would later be known as Nero. Despite being an orphan at the time and his hotheadedness preventing him from making a lot of friends, Nero would grow to respect Credo like a brother and develop feelings for Kyrie and want to protect her. He’d have to do that sooner than he expected when a demon attack happened in Fortuna and injured his arm and Kyrie. Nero managed to take care of the demons and both of them survived, but his arm didn’t quite recover. Instead, it transformed his arm into something demonic and started awakening his inner powers. From that day forth, his arm changed and a voice echoed in his head: “Power…give me more power!”

Nero hid this power, training with it in secret until a fateful encounter with a mystery red coated man, who seemingly assassinated the leader of the Order of the Sword. Nero was tasked to track the mysterious assassin down and capture him, but later on would realize the order he served wasn’t so free from corruption after all. Experimenting with demonic power, kidnapping Kyrie and later on seeing Credo die right in front of him, Nero knew what he had to do. Though he himself was captured for a time, thanks to the help of the man he was supposed to capture, Dante, the legendary demon hunter himself, he would be released, save the woman he loved and defeat the Order of the Sword once and for all, ending their corrupt tyranny. Dante entrusted Nero with the Yamato, a keepsake from his brother he thought he lost, realizing he still had a family out there and someone else who was willing to fight for the good of mankind.

For five years, Nero spent time together with Kyrie, helping repair the damage done to Fortuna City and taking care of people who lost their homes and orphans who lost their families. No longer needing to hide his demonic arm, he even opened up a demon hunting branch of Devil May Cry, to help protect people from demon attacks, later even going mobile, especially after meeting the gunsmith Nico who would help provide maintenance on Nero’s weapons. Things seemed peaceful as demon attacks in Fortuna went down a drastic amount…until the nightmare happened.

A mysterious cloaked man would rip off Nero’s demon arm and steal the legendary Yamato from him. Put into a coma for a long time, Nero would awaken and the demon who stole his arm, known as Urizen, rose as a huge threat to the human world. Understandably angry and his frustration getting bigger at losing his arm and feeling wounded even more when Dante called him ‘deadweight’, he would go and try and hunt down the demon for some payback, with some help from Nico for providing him with a new prosthetic arm. Nero felt the pain of being useless before, so perhaps that was why being called that really hurt him. Not being able to save Credo and even pay Dante back for helping him in the past, he really wanted to make amends for that. He would push through the demon carnage to settle a score to settle with a demonic force.

His plans would change though when he found the one who stole his arm was not just a demon, but his own father, a son of Sparda, Vergil, who had done so to regain power and reunite his demon and human halves together again. Dante, knowing he has his own score to settle with his twin brother, told Nero to just go home, knowing full well Nero couldn’t bear the pain of killing his own father. However, Nero looked deep within and with some encouragement from the people he cared about, would not kill either son of Sparda, triggering his inner devil in order to stop the sibling rivalry once for all, and reunite them as proper brothers. He was not useless or “deadweight” anymore, but a hero who protected his family.

Nero was always an emotional young man, but he was always honest with himself and accepted who he really was, not like his father who has to mask his feelings with cold ambition for power or his uncle Dante who hid his pain with laughter and banter. In a way, it’s strange, as Nero for the longest time had no idea he was related to either of these siblings, but he ended up being stronger in ways than either Dante or Vergil, being a role model who brought the siblings together. Perhaps he was more like the legendary knight Sparda than his sons ever were.

Experience & Skill

Despite his young age compared to the other devil hunters in his world, Nero has kept up with the best of them and held his own. Even without his sword and handicapping himself to just one arm, he was able to throw hands with punches and kicks and use the demon’s bladed weaponry against them. He does this again in his first bout against Dante, this time using his Devil Bringer, just showing how strong his punches are by launching him, catching up to him and disarming him before wailing on him. Even when he’s missing an arm, he can hold his own better than most people could with three. He’s also a skilled grappler (and possibly watches wrestling) as he’s able to toss demons around with great force, use an enemy’s weapon against them and even do piledrivers. He doesn’t just swing wildly as he’s also been shown to time his grabs just right to catch them off guard before unleashing a powerful counterattack.

Of course, Nero’s best with a blade and it’s highlighted best when he was a Holy Knight for the Order of the Sword. Holy Knights are the best fighters when it comes to hand-to-hand combat and no one is more skilled with a sword than them. Credo himself taught him how to use a sword and Nero has held his own and even defeated him in combat. Nero’s defeated hordes of demons, saving innocent people, destroying rubble/blocking off access ways so the demons couldn’t follow them and even ride the demons like a hoverboard! With him having shown his great observation skills, it’s no wonder he was assigned the Order of the Sword’s dirtiest jobs for his prodigious skills, having earned the respect of everyone.

Nero has kept up with both Dante and Vergil, the latter of whom is considered a master of iaijutsu and even as a child was able to master the Yamato to defeat Mundus’ forces. Dante himself is an exceptional swordsman, his master of close-quarter and ranged combat has led some people to believe he surpassed his father Sparda, who was considered to be the greatest in the demon realm. Dante has also defeated Sparda’s apprentices, Modeus and Baul, the former being considered a swordsman so great they could shake the demon world and have over two thousand years of combat experience.

The most impressive of Uncle Dante’s showings in skill was when he defeated Gilver, someone who analyzed and adapted to Dante’s fighting prowess but he was still no match for the Son of Sparda. Dante has also defeated the Black Knights, demons specifically created with Sparda’s and Dante and Vergil’s skill but they were still no match for him. Side material claims Dante is an “almost perfect being” capable of achieving anything. When presented with a task he has yet to master, he only needs a few seconds to conquer it. However, Dante’s most impressive skill showing is in the Devil May Cry 2 novel where he kept up and defeated Chen the Cannibal. Why is this impressive? Well, Chen absorbed the Beastheads that let him gain the knowledge of all time and space with precognitive powers, was able to mimic Sparda’s style and his knowledge of swordsmanship, and claimed that he gained literal infinite knowledge when it came to swordfighting… but he ultimately still fell to Dante. Dante and Vergil fight each other all the time and Nero’s kept up with both and even defeated Vergil at the end of Devil May Cry 5. Despite Nero’s young age, he’s shown to be worthy of the Sparda bloodline and kept up with the best of them.

Equipment

Devil Bringer

When Nero first awoke his demonic power, it manifested itself physically on his body, turning his right arm into that of a demon’s. Although Nero at first hated his arm, it gave him superhuman strength, the ability to absorb and manifest power, and became a reliable tool in his arsenal he used to slay evil and protect the ones he loved, so he eventually came around on it.

The Devil Bringer has all sorts of strong powers. Aside from letting him lift heavy objects (and he can alter the size of the arm when he needs to), it’s surprisingly a good defensive tool, letting him block Dante’s powerful stinger move. Nero used it to grab enemies for powerful throws with Buster and also pull enemies towards him with Snatch or pull himself towards his opponent with Hell Bound (and also use it to maneuver around the area). It also reacts to Nero if a demonic presence is nearby. One of its stronger abilities is being able to absorb energy to enhance his Devil Bringer but seemingly able to absorb enough to depower foes (like when he forced Credo to exit his demonic form).

Nero can use Hold to use a captured enemy as a meat shield of sorts, Auto-Search lets the arm glow when demonic orbs (or a secret mission location) are in his presence and thanks to absorbing Echida’s seeds (she’s a plant demon thing, don’t make it weird), trees will wither away should he come into contact with them. He can also bring life into certain inanimate objects (though likely not literally anything).

During the events of Devil May Cry 4, Nero’s Devil Bringer absorbed and repaired the broken halves of Yamato, but when Vergil re-appeared at the start of Devil May Cry 5 and stole the sword by tearing Nero’s arm off his body, the Devil Bringer would manifest itself in a different way for Nero. Appearing as winged, spectral arms that can do everything the Devil Bringer did and more (two hands are better than one, after all!), they become even stronger in Nero’s Devil Trigger. He can now use Hold on two enemies at once and use his Devil Bringer’s claws and fist to attack in-tandem for even more damage.

Funnily enough, Vergil can actually turn Yamato back into Nero’s arm in one of his taunts, so for all intents and purposes, the original arm is still functional, even if Nero did get a better upgrade later on.

Red Queen

As Nero likes to call it, this blade’s the best battle companion a swordsman could wish for. It’s a heavily modified version of the Order of the Sword’s Durandal, customized only for Nero. While this isn’t a magical blade like say Dante’s Rebellion or Vergil’s Yamato, the Red Queen can clash with them with no ill effect. Nero swings the sword with heavy powerful strikes, emphasizing rage and frustration, treating it almost like a blunt object than an actual blade but is clearly skilled with it, able to take down hordes of demons with ease.

What’s special about this sword is that it has a combustion engine equipped, adding extra power and propulsion to its powerful sword swings. Nero can “revv” this sword like a motorcycle, with its Exceed system, it lights the sword on fire by spraying a flammable fuel across the blade (and somehow it never is in danger of melting) which helps Nero set his foes ablaze. We’re serious when we say only Nero can wield it though; without demon blood in your veins, the Red Queen would go flying off your hands!

Blue Rose

Nero’s personal long-ranged firearm of choice, the Blue Rose is a massive, double barrelled revolver specially designed and outfitted by Nero himself. While the Order of the Sword believed guns to be dishonourable (sound familiar?), and as such didn’t use them, Nero bucked the trend with his exceptionally devastating hand cannon. What makes the Blue Rose special from other guns is its unique design where two bullets are fired at a slight delay. The first bullet pierces the enemy’s armour, while the second follows it up immediately, shooting straight into whatever foe he’s facing. Nero can also use Color Up to fire three powerful shots in a row. But he can push this even further with his Charged Shot, which explodes inside the enemy after piercing into their body. Talk about brutal.

Yamato

In Devil May Cry 4, Nero would gain his father’s weapon, the legendary katana, Yamato. This isn’t an ordinary katana as it has the power to cut through space and dimensions, allowing it to ignore durability by unleashing an attack on the dimension rather than material. Aside from its incredible potent spatial cutting, it also has the power to seal Hell Gates and close the portal in the demon world and even open up portals.

Aside from that, it also has the power to separate “power from heart” and “man from devil”, like when Dante used it to separate Nero from the Savior or Vergil split himself into Urizen and V, likely in reference to how it keeps the human and demon worlds separate. It also is able to nullify the power in Nero when he got stabbed by it even though seconds before he was able to fight back with the Devil Bringer. Even when broken, when in the presence of a kin of Sparda, it’s able to repair itself like when it saved Nero from impalement.

Nero himself has mainly used the Yamato for blade beams and as a strong weapon, but he himself has used the space cutting abilities as well like when he saved Kyrie using it’s properties.

Note: While Nero technically does not have Yamato anymore, he had it for a long period of time in his adventure in Devil May Cry 4, kept it for years until Vergil stole it back and it personally chose him as its wielder for that time. We decided to give the weapon for this blog but do note he can summon a spectral version of Yamato anyway with his Devil Trigger (more on this later).

Devil Breakers

After losing his original right arm, Nero needed a replacement to kick demon ass. Thanks to Nico Goldstein, she crafted a plethora of Devil Breakers for Nero to use in combat. While all of these Devil Breakers are quite effective, Nero can only use them for so many times. They can break if Nero gets attacked in the middle of use or if Nero uses a Devil Breakers charged attack. Not to mention, Nero can’t freely swap between them (though this is likely just a gameplay mechanic), he has to have one broken or make it self destruct with a short explosion in order to use the next one in line.

Should be noted while Nero did regenerate his arm by the end of Devil May Cry 5, he can still use the Devil Breakers via fusing them to his arm, so hey that’s handy! (Pun not intended)

  • Overture: Nero’s first Devil Breaker, which he uses to take down demons with an electric palm strike. Nero can also attach the arm to the enemy, which turns it into a timed explosive. Nero can also detonate it by shooting Overture while it’s on the enemy.
  • Gerbera: A Devil Breaker that allows Nero to maneuver around the battlefield with a shockwave, which can also negate or reflect projectiles. Nero can also use an ability known as Stamen Ray which unleashes a powerful blast that wipes out any enemies. If done in midair, Nero can fire penetrating lasers that ricochet off walls and floors.
  • Punch Line: This Devil Breaker is basically a rocket fist. Once Nero fires it, Punch Line runs rampant around the enemy, flying and constantly delivering strikes. Nero can also call it back to ride and do tricks on it. Nero can even charge Punch Line to deliver a boost knuckle punch, which uses the propulsion to deliver a devastating haymaker blow.
  • Helter Skelter: What this Devil Breaker may be lacking in range, it can pierce through a foe’s defenses with a drill-like attack. When charged up, it allows Nero to pierce multiple foe’s defenses at once in a single use.
  • Tomboy: A Devil Breaker that allows Nero to push his weapons, the Blue Rose and Red Queen, to their maximum limits. With the Blue Rose, Nero can fire powerful, penetrating shots and charge shots that can wipe out multiple enemies at once. With the Red Queen, Nero’s combos with it become even more devastating, both on the ground and in the air, since it’s set at max level 3 Exceed charge at all times with Tomboy activated
  • Buster Arm: This is basically a Devil Breaker version of Nero’s Buster Arm he had back before he lost it. It allows Nero to grapple onto foes to do a powerful finisher move and charging this up will allow Nero to do even more powerful finisher moves
  • Rawhide: This Devil Breaker has the widest attack range of them all. It allows Nero’s arm to become a metal whip chain that can strike enemies multiple times, as well as reel them in. When charged, the metal whip chain pulls in any enemies close to it to slam them to the ground.
  • Ragtime: A Devil Breaker that can literally control time. Nero does this by firing a sphere that slows down any enemy caught in it, which leaves them wide open for attacks, although Nero also slows down if he’s in the sphere. But when charged, Nero slows down everything around him for a short period, no enemy is safe from time being slowed when this ability is used.
  • Mega Buster: Hailing from the Mega Man series, this Devil Breaker allows Nero to rapid-fire energy based projectiles, much like Rock himself does. Nero can also fire devastating charge shots to take out multiple foes at once
  • Sweet Surrender: A Devil Breaker that’s better meant to soothe away the pain. When using it, the Devil Breaker vibrates and gradually refills Nero’s health. Charging it can make it self destruct, but it also restores a lot of Nero’s health in an instant
  • Pasta Breaker: A Devil Breaker that was originally made to help Nero eat pasta. But in combat, it has the same functions as Punch Line and Overture, in that it can be fired like a rocket arm and that it can  be attached to an enemy to self-destruct when charged, although it’s not as effective as those Devil Breakers
  • Gerbera GP01: Basically Gerbera, but with a different coat of paint
  • Monkey Business: Basically Helter Skelter, only this one is made of bananas!

Consumables

Vital Star: A set of alchemy produced healing items, which have small, medium, and large variations. Small Vital Stars heal about a quarter of Nero’s health, medium heal half of Nero’s health, and large fully restores Nero’s health. Nero can carry up to 30 of these

Devil Star: Devil Stars are the Vital Star equivalent for Nero’s Devil Trigger. These only come in small and large variations that restore the Devil Trigger. Small restores about a half of Nero’s Devil Trigger, while large restores it completely. Nero can only carry up to 10

Gold Orb: In the unlikely event Nero falls in battle, he can use a gold orb to completely restore his health and Devil Trigger. Nero can carry up to three of these, which should be more than enough to get the job done. In addition, Gold Orbs are stated to “recall lost souls” which indicates they are a true form of resurrection

Miscellaneous Items

Holy Water: With this item, Nero can throw what’s basically a giant grenade, attacking anyone on the screen with a huge flash of light. It’s likely a holy element…because come on. Nero can hold up to 5.

Sephirothic Fruit: Upon absorbing it from the demon Echidna, Nero would gain the ability to wither away trees that were blocking his path.

Aegis Shield: After absorbing the energy from Credo’s shield, this item would grant Nero the ability Hold, which basically lets him use other enemies as meat shields.

Key of Cronus: Nero can use this item to slow down time within a specific area, so long as it’s used in a Chrono Slicer. So he can’t really pop this as a second time slow basically.

Red Orbs: Though normally useful to buy upgrades in the game, Nero can also use this as a second option to cheat death and revive himself. The more red orbs he spends, the more health he returns with.

Abilities

Hybrid Human-Demon Physiology

Being part of the same bloodline as the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda has its benefits as Nero has been shown to be directly comparable to both Dante and Vergil in terms of physiology. Dante for example has shown great adaptation such as when he previously could barely hold a sword, but a few seconds later was able to renew his strength. Nero himself is an excellent example of this because he previously could not even touch Urizen, but after a whole month of training by killing demons, Nero was able to show immense improvement, being the first one to properly land a hit on Urizen himself. In their first meeting, Dante makes the comment that Nero improved mid-fight against him.

The Sons of Sparda are stubborn boys shown numerous times throughout the series. The Devil Sword Sparda requires great willpower to hold (V himself thought Nero could wield it). This makes sense since Arkham transformed into a blob when he was trying to hold its weaker form, the Force Edge. Vergil himself has shown this stubbornness as he was able to resist mind control from Mundus, despite being corrupted (until he finally relented when Mundus gave him his part of the amulet).

Demons in general have shown they can feed off despair and human blood and devil power can refill in general whether inflicting or getting damaged themselves. That being said, what makes the Sons of Sparda so strong is the power of love and righteousness, being the main reason why Sparda and his heritage were able to stop Mundus. The power of love y’all!

Sparda’s kin have shown impressive stamina as well, such as when Dante and Urizen fought for a whole day. While it is assumed Urizen was toying with Dante, it’s not so clear cut as he was still actively fighting Dante during the whole fight, Dante himself was taking the fight seriously and Urizen NEEDED to sit down to absorb power the entire time from the tree. This overall makes it an impressive stamina feat. Dante and Vergil also fought for 39 days straight at the end of Devil May Cry 5, both only needing 35 seconds of rest before being able to fight again. Supported again in the novel with how he only needs to catch his breath to start recovering demonic energy.

The Sons of Sparda have also been shown to breathe underwater (in the most annoying first person under water controls ever) and breathe in space without issue. They also have non-physical interaction, such as when Dante can attack demons like the Soul Eater that are intangible normally or how Dante separated a demon possessing a woman’s body without harming the host. Side material even gives Dante the ability to “crush souls into oblivion” with his blows. It’s also possible human and demon hybrids could live for hundreds of years without passing away, shown by Matier though this is speculation as none of the Sons of Sparda have reached that age yet.

Demonic Energy

Being part demon allows Nero to use Devil May Cry’s powerful universal energy system that is Demonic Energy. It’s been used in the series since the very beginning, allowing them to raise their power, speed and durability in a fight. Nero’s used in various ways such as charging his guns up with explosive energy and devastating energy beam attacks like Maximum Bet. His Uncle Dante is an excellent user of demonic energy like when he powers up his strikes with his sword Rebellion and the dual handguns for more power and accuracy. The Sons of Sparda can use this energy in all sorts of ways such as creating a platform that lets them double jump with Air Hike, amping a motorcycle to go even faster somehow, unleash devastating summoned swords of energy, move faster, increase the size of the Devil Bringer and of course pull their Devil Triggers. Activating Devil Trigger in particular can actually restore demonic energy in the body, letting the boys catch a second wind of sorts during combat.

Should be noted despite the Sparda’s kin vast demonic energy reserves, it is not infinite. Reflexes and speed can get slower while being drained of it. Thankfully, thanks to the power of resolve and a powerful human spirit, it can amplify demonic power even more, Nero showing this when fighting Vergil at the end of Devil May Cry 5, with it constantly being refueled.

It should be noted that though demonic energy is called magic a couple times in the series, demons like Baphomet do seem to imply a difference between the two, though it’s not super elaborated on. Demonic energy is used for incredibly potent space cutting like the Judgement Cut End and Dante’s Quicksilver ability to slow down time, showing it’s used for the series hax as well. Side material like Peak of Combat more explicitly show that Nero has spatial hax without the need for Yamato, shooting at and shattering a rift in space using Blue Rose alongside Dante and Vergil using Ebony and Ivory. Dante has also simply created rifts into the Demon World, albeit it’s vague how he does it.

Regeneration

If there’s anything the Devil May Cry boys are known for, it’s their crazy regeneration. While they’re usually fast enough to avoid taking damage straight up, should the worst happen, they can regenerate pretty much any wound (even their clothes are still okay…somehow!) Dante has shown the Sons of Sparda can take multiple impalements to their body, bullets to the head and even stabs to the heart, body parts I’m pretty sure most people need. Heck, even when Vergil was exhausted after a long night and fight with Dante, he was able to “stay together” after Dante sliced right through him.

Nero himself has shown just how crazy the Sparda family’s regeneration really is, such as when he died in Devil May Cry 4. No really, it’s confirmed he died when he was stabbed by Agnus, but Yamato awakening his demonic power within brought him back to life. Nero has also regrown his arm in seconds after reawakening his demonic power and pulling his Devil Trigger. Most famously is when he was captured and had his entire body melted by the Savior with other sources saying it dissipated into mist. Nero lost his sense of being/entire body, but once Nero got Yamato again, this let him separate himself from the Savior, which let him reform his body from his memories after reawakening his demonic powers. Nero previously had his demonic power turned off with the Yamato and he was still fused with the Savior, explaining why he couldn’t regenerate before. Heck, it’s explained before Nero needed Yamato to tap into his demonic power, but now he can just do it on his own, he can just regenerate on his own too without the need of Yamato. Other demons have shown they can regenerate from their soul too. Nero’s able to regenerate from nothing with barely any stamina drop and this was when he was young and inexperienced too, so it’s possible it’s even better now. It should be noted it is possible to wear down the regeneration (like when Dante knocked out cold for a month after his fight with Urizen), but hey the fact that Nero can survive full body regeneration at least once or twice without losing stamina is crazy.

Vergil has shown it’s possible for demons to come back from being dead after his body and soul were completely destroyed when he was Nelo Angelo. However, it should be noted Vergil was of course corrupted by Mundus and after his death, it took a long time for him to come back, making likely body and soul regeneration destruction combat inapplicable.

Supernatural Senses

While Nero can already tell if a demonic presence is nearby thanks to his Devil Bringer, he’s been shown to be able to sense when danger approaches too such as when he noticed Artemis from behind even though it didn’t make a noise or when a Bianco Angelo knight approached him. Nero can also focus to figure out where his next objective is should he get lost. Sharing the Sparda bloodline, Nero’s likely similar to his uncle Dante, such as like when he knew when a phone was going to ring before it happened, maneuvering and dancing around demons, explosions and gunfire by sensing where they would be and shoot Beryl’s bullets out of the air by telegraphing them. He’s also been able to instinctively avoid traps even while weakened and able to locate targets, figuring out whatever is going on.

The Son of Sparda has also been shown to have increased smell, able to sense the power level/capabilities of his opponents with just a glance and accurately gauge the individual power of every demon in Shadow’s army in the 2nd novel. Even weaker characters like V are able to detect power levels relative to others. Dante has also famously used his senses to predict Chen’s moves even though Chen had infinite combat knowledge and could literally see the future, including Dante’s own moves. Needless to say, the Sons of Sparda are rarely caught off guard.

Sword Techniques

With the Red Queen in hand, Nero knows a good amount of sword techniques to take out demonic foes

  • Streak: A rushing attack that covers a lot of range and sweeps up surrounding enemies
  • High-Roller: Nero’s attack where he swings his sword upwards to send his opponent into the air for some aerial combos
  • Roulette Spin: A mid-air attack where Nero spins the Red Queen to send the enemy flying higher, all while gaining some altitude
  • Split: A mid-air slash that slams the enemies back down to earth
  • Calibur: The mid-air version of streak, where Nero rushes forth to deliver a good blow
  • Shuffle: After dodging an enemy’s attack, Nero can counterattack by rushing forward with a powerful blow
  • Payline: A mid-air diving attack that strikes an enemy’s weak point and has good armor to shrug off their attacks
  • Hard Way: A grounded version of Payline where Nero strikes an enemy’s weak point while shrugging off their attacks
  • Exceed: By revving the Red Queen’s handle like a motorcycle, Nero can use the sword’s flammable fuel injection system to enhance the power of its attacks and the range, it can charge up to three levels
  • Double Down: Using the Exceed system, Nero can strike the ground below with a fiery impact to deal a devastating amount of damage
  • MAX-Act: Right after an attack, Nero can rev up the Exceed system to instant level 3 with precise timing

Demonic Abilities

(real shame Teppen EoS’d, the art was cool)

Nero’s combat prowess extends beyond him using guns and swords to take out demons. Coupled with his demonic heritage, Nero is able to use a variety of abilities to maneuver around the battlefield and deal damage

  • Table Hopper: Nero evades an enemy attack by slightly moving his whole body, allowing for an easy counterattack
  • Rainbow: Nero runs towards his enemy to deliver a devastating dropkick that rattles an enemy to their core
  • Enemy Step: While in mid-air, Nero hops off the head of an enemy for an easy double jump
  • Air Hike: While in mid-air, Nero creates a magical rune under his feet to perform a double jump
  • Flap Top: Essentially, it’s a second Air Hike, but Nero can also glide to slow his decent
  • Kick Jump: Another double jump where Nero jumps off a wall
  • Recovery Provocation: A secret taunt of Nero’s where he chews on some bubble gum, which gradually restores his health if uninterrupted

Resistances

While Nero has shown some of these resistances himself, he’ll also scale to Dante and Vergil as they share the same family blood and have similar physiology.

Forms

Yamato Devil Trigger

In Devil May Cry 4, Nero would gain this form of Devil Trigger where he summons a ghost like entity behind him (holy shit is that a JoJo reference???). The blue demon entity behind Nero is actually his soul manifested. Though it requires Yamato since that’s how he first awakened it, Nero would rely on it for quite some time through his adventures. It increases his stats and healing factor, making him a fierce foe indeed. Nero can activate Devil Trigger whenever he wants, launching foes upwards upon activating. His Buster attacks will also have more fierce power, emphasized by the animation. He will also gain the moves Showdown, Maximum Bet and Summoned Swords…which we’ll explain in a bit. Nero likely cannot use this form anymore as Vergil has stolen Yamato back from Nero, but it doesn’t matter since…

True Devil Trigger

Awakening into his true devil upon finding the inner resolve to stop the sons of Sparda from killing each other, Nero would form this without the need of Yamato. It’s similar to Dante and Vergil’s Devil Triggers, increasing his speed, attack and defense with a faster healing factor. Dante’s Devil Trigger in particular has let him break out of attacks like maggots that attach to him and prevented him from using his guns. Nero has shown to use his Devil Trigger to let him fly at fast speeds but he would gain the ability to triple jump with the Flap Top ability. In terms of a multiplier, the safest we can reliably apply to Nero is two times, though some English guides claim to increase speed by tenfold should the Quick Heart be equipped. Due to the contentious nature of multipliers, we will NOT be relying on it in the verdict.

Upon awakening it, Nero’s demonic energy will automatically refill constantly, likely because he’s under a heightened emotion. Makes sense as Dante himself has used his own Devil Trigger to replenish his demonic energy. Nero can also form a spectral version of Yamato, likely letting him access the same spatial manipulation abilities (especially since these are the exact same moves from DMC4’s Devil Trigger that required Yamato). The Devil Trigger’s full timeframe is a bit tricky to lock down. Recently, the Netflix show has shown for it to last at least 8 minutes (the only reason it went away was because Dante and Vergil’s power was being drained.) The timeframe is possibly longer, but 8 minutes is usually all Nero needs to finish off his foes. He really did pull his devil trigger…

  • Summoned Swords: This lets Nero summon demonic blades of energy to fire at his foes. When he unleashes his charged show, multiple blades will appear at once to overwhelm his foes. It’s stated to be able to pierce foes through force of will.
  • Maximum Bet: Place your bets because Nero’s going all in as he unleashes two giant sword slashes (with potential spatial manipulation looking at the effect more closely) as a huge sword beam blows through his foes like a powerful wind.
  • Showdown: Summoning a spectral form of Yamato, Nero unleashes a heavy amount of fierce and powerful slashes, heavily damaging his enemies. It’s confirmed to slice through space, making it an incredibly powerful durability negation should it hit.

Scaling

Nero by the end of the series was a match for Dante and Vergil, stopping both of them from killing each other. On top of that, he was the first one to properly land a hit on Urizen, something not even Dante at the time could accomplish. This places him safely above most of the following feats especially by the end of Devil May Cry 5. From fodder demons to the dreaded Demon Kings, Nero’s got it covered.

Note: We’re aware that the old Nero vs Hellboy blog has a rather infamous “debunk” section of universal Devil May Cry (that we no longer agree with), but instead of doing more long before the verdicts, we’ll keep things concise and brief in the scaling section themselves. If you wish to see a more detailed breakdown about those feats, we do recommend reading our Galacta Knight vs Vergil blog (though any stances that have changed since then will be noted in the scaling and verdict itself).

Sons of Sparda

Nero has defeated his father, Vergil, at the end of Devil May Cry 5 and even stopped the two brothers in the Sin Devil Trigger forms while they were trying to kill each other. While it is possible to argue Vergil was worn down from his previous fight with Dante, Vergil claims he can still fight and acknowledges his defeat against Nero and Nero wasn’t trying to kill Vergil anyway (and it’d be ridiculous to claim Vergil got a million times weaker when he fought Nero), so he scales to the Son of Sparda’s feats.

Demons

Nero has defeated all sorts of demons from Berial, Goliath, Echidna, Malphas and so much more. From being able to match Dante and Vergil means he scales to the demons they defeated to, letting Nero safely scale above the following feats.

Demon Kings

From Mundus to Argosax to Abigail, the Demon Kings were some of the toughest demons around…until Dante defeated them all. Since Nero scales to Dante, he should be in a similar range if not higher than these feats. To add more proof, Nero was the first character to properly land a hit on Urizen, a feat that not even Dante (pre-Sin Devil Trigger unlocked) was able to accomplish. Defeating his father Vergil by the end of Devil May Cry 5 solidifies Nero being able to scale to Devil May Cry’s high end feats.

Weaknesses

(Source)

Nero may be one of the strongest characters in Devil May Cry now, but he’s not unbeatable, case in point his defeats against Dante, Urizen and Sanctus. The latter of which exploited Nero’s love for Kyrie, taking advantage of his desire to protect his loved ones. He’s also a hot head sometimes, rushing into danger (though he has gotten better about this with age). Nero’s regeneration also, while incredibly impressive, can’t go on forever and be overtaxed. While the Sons of Sparda can recover their stamina fast, they can still tire out against an equal opponent, potentially getting weaker. Finally, Nero’s Devil Breakers are somewhat fragile, being able to be destroyed with a good clean hit should an opponent catch him off guard and are limited in number (though Nero’s able to take good care of them…usually.)

Hellboy

Background

Don’t mess with me, lady. I’ve been drinking with skeletons.”

  • Real name: Anung Un Rama, Urush Un Rama (Destroyer of Worlds, Creator of Worlds)
  • Age:  Over 80 years old (400 chronologically)
  • Human/Demon Hybrid
  • Height: 210cm or 6’11’’
  • Occupation: B.P.R.D. agent
  • Likes: Pancakes, Liz, smoking, Pinocchio, late night TV shows especially Survivor (no, really)
  • Dislikes: His dad, his destiny, nazis, drugs…sometimes (he’s quit and relapsed smoking multiple times)

The year was 1944, near the end of the second world war. The Nazi party was on the brink of defeat and were looking for a miracle. So to find that miracle, they would turn their eyes to Rasputin the Sorcerer for help. So on one brink night the Nazi’s would set up a ceremony in hopes of finding anything to help tip the tides of the war to their favor. With Rasputin waving his hands it was only one lightning strike before the party saw the miracle they obtained was not one of the ordinary caliber. Instead of an atomic weapon or blessing from the gods, a little red boy in red would appear instead with an arm that no one even thought a thing his size could carry. But before the party could do anything with it, the Bureau Paranormal Research of Defence would show up and snatch up anything the party left behind, and one Professor Trevor Bruttenholm would find the demon boy that came from hell. While others were afraid of it, Trevor saw nothing but a child that needed guidance and thus chose to raise the boy as his own and would give him the name Hellboy!

After being picked up Hellboy would be raised in a B.P.R.D. base in Mexico where he would be treated like the kid of Trevor and be trained under their forces to take on demons! See the B.P.R.D. aren’t your average secret organization, instead of taking on terrorists or bank robbers, they take on the supernatural by stopping any demonic threats be it demonic dogs, vengeful ghosts, or even mythical creatures like the Babayaga! Thus with their training Hellboy would become very well acquainted with it and soon would be sent out in the front lines taking on these world ending demons with nothing more than a pistol and his right hand of doom. And soon even the whole world would find out about his accomplishments and become B.P.R.D.’s poster child as the best paranormal investigator there ever was. But under all these missions were something Hellboy could not avoid, as it felt with every mission more and more demons were gunning to end Hellboy’s life, soon every demon they came across would talk about him bringing the end of the world with his power, as if they were scared of his very presence, but it would be soon that he would find out why.

After coming back from a mission, Hellboy would meet with The Professor himself, but their talk was cut short as soon a frog monster would kill his father figure. This murder case would drag them to Cavendish hall where the question as to who killed The Professor would be revealed to be Rasputin, the same person who brought Hellboy to Earth. This was all because Rasputin set a trap to reveal the truth of Hellboy, that his birth was no accident, but instead his birth signified that the end was coming, as he was the bringing of chaos, the one to end their world to start anew! Rightfully though, Hellboy wasn’t a fan and would defeat Rasputin and kill him once again. But the incident still stuck with him and soon he would question who he even was in the first place. It also didn’t help that the B.R.P.D. was not very kind to people like Hellboy, as upon one mission he would be given the order to kill his friend Roger The Homunculas if anything got too bad with him. He felt he had no place at the organization anymore, he himself didn’t even know who he was, and so Hellboy would leave the B.R.P.D. on a quest of self discovery.

Through his solo adventures Hellboy would still come across more and more demons trying to kill him, he had no understanding why, that was until he would finally discover the truth. Hellboy’s birth was a bit of a mess, his mother, Sarah Hughes, was once a witch that sold her soul to a demon, but not just any demon. No, she would sell it to one of the most powerful demons, Azzael, the Duke of Hell! And through this wish the two would become married and bound together for the rest of her life. But for one last ditch effort she would try to ask God for forgiveness for her sins and save her soul right on her death bed and Azzael was not having any of that. So that very same night Azzael would drag Sarah to hell and burn her body so she could give birth to Hellboy, or as his real name Amung Un Rama. Along with his birth Azzael would cut off his son’s right hand and replace it with the Right Hand Of Doom, which was meant to act as a key to unlock the prison of the abyss and release Ogdru Jahad to bring the apocalypse.

So there it was, the truth of his birth. Hellboy’s whole life was meant for one thing and that was to destroy the world he was raised in, to kill the people he called friends, with the only reason he didn’t was because he was sent away after demons found out what Azzael did and trapped him for eternity. It didn’t help that Hellboy would notice he did have the rage of a devil inside him, that if he blacked out he would awaken back to a bloody battlefield that he caused. But this truth would not sway him at all, Hellboy would actually deny his true purpose and deny the demons what they wanted. If Hellboy was gonna be given a destiny, it would be one he chose for himself. But his path would be put to the test as the blood queen Nimue would be awoken again! Her plan was to become an avatar for Ogdru Jahad and destroy the world she hated for good. But before he could face her, Hellboy would learn one more tiny thing about his past.

See his mother was not just some ordinary girl, she was actually the descendent of King Arthur! After defeating Nimue the first time he would go to have a daughter…who had another daughter, and that daughter had another daughter, and so on and so forth. That was until Sarah who as we know sold her soul and got pregnant with Azzael’s that gave birth to Hellboy, making him the next descendent of the bloodline, but also the King of England! Because of this bloodline, Hellboy would acquire Excalibur itself. But once again, Hellboy questioned his purpose. Everytime Hellboy used a blade, it was a similar thing to him blacking out, he would become the demon who would bring chaos. So once again, he threw away his purpose, opting out to fight the blood queen on his own terms, an act that would set his death in motion. So Hellboy would do battle with the blood queen, who would turn herself into a dragon avatar for Ogdru Jagad, and fight the biggest battles of their lives. It was a hard one, but ultimately with the help of Alice, a girl who Hellboy loved and was helping him, would give him a blade that would finally kill the dragon and send Ogdru Jagad back to the Abyss. All seemed well…until Nimue’s ghost ripped Hellboy’s heart out killing him…whoops.

Hellboy was dead and for his afterlife he would be sent to hell, his birth place. But even for Hell standards, the underworld was not doing the best. This was because Satan was asleep for hundreds of years, not waking up and taking rule of his kingdom. That was not the only strange thing Hellboy found, he would also find his old wife he married in Mexico, a demon who would whisper to her old husband that he must kill Satan in his sleep. But Hellboy would refuse, or so he thought. As after that day Hell would go out of control, with people looking to rule it more and more, until there was nothing left. Hell would have no flame, no ruler, or in fact, barely any demons at all, that was because Hellboy destroyed it. Be it because he blacked out or blocked the memory, Hellboy would kill Satan, he would accept his demon heritage, and he would become The Prince of Hell! With his new power, Hellboy would kill any hierarchy the underworld would have and soon destroy the flame of Hell itself. He would finally fulfill his purpose, bringing the end of the world, but it just wasn’t the world the demons had hoped for. Now that everything was said and done, Hellboy would accept the reality he was given, and wander the lifeless Hell he created…until he was resurrected but that’s another time. But be this as a tale to any demon that would dare try and bring hell on earth, that once you see a hornless half demon half man being with a mean right hand, you’d better start running before you encounter the one and only Hellboy!

Experience & Skill

Referred to as the World’s Greatest Paranormal Investigator, Hellboy has a lot of experience taking down baddies in more ways than just punching. He’s been in the BPRD since 1952, when he was given honorary human status. He has hunted things of monstrous births and evil intentions, had stood between reality and the things that hungered to rip holes in its fabric. He had battled folklore’s worst abominations, killed offspring spawn by human madness. After nearly a century, it has become routine. Basically, Hellboy has gone through “a hell of a lot of coats” from getting burned. Big Red can take on hordes of enemies on his own and come out on top, take on an undead army on his own before being overrun by them, and can fight this teleporting vampire lady all god damn day before he gets interrupted. So safe to say crowds won’t do much against him.

He’s skilled at wrestling, even leading to him becoming a popular star in Mexico, and close quarters combat. Naturally gifted soldiers get bested by him. Adding on to this is his fun knowledge on nerve junctions. And while he uses guns a lot more, having shot at demons while on a moving aircraft, blasting tiny tooth fairies out of the air, targeting and shooting Wink’s hand before he can pummel Abe, and working to improve his aim, he was always more natural when using a blade. This is best exemplified in the movies, where Prince Nuada, who has years of swordfighting practice and is a master at it, falls for a weakened Hellboy’s feints, who even anticipates Nuada’s swings after timing them and snaps his spear in half despite the prince being faster. In their rematch, the experience gap is outright acknowledged, yet Hellboy defeats him in an extended sword fight, parrying blows meant for his heart, getting killing blow opportunities, and finally grabs and disarms Nuada. He also tends to be quite creative in battle. He improvises to great effect, as shown when he grabbed an office chair and used it like a club, used the environment to his advantage to take down Anubis, stole one of the arms off a skeleton monster to smack a bat monster, and even in his dreams, improvises using a wooden ship part and a fishing spear to kill foes. He’s willing to go even crazier with it, straight up taking a sword from a zombie soldier to attack him with it, stealing and breaking Kroenen’s sword by taking it out of his grip, and shoving his fist forward to squeeze a grenade until it detonates.

And being a detective, he likes to use that big Cambion brain to solve problems. He can tell when someone’s lying, like when he quickly realizes seemingly nice people who invited him inside their temple are actually demons. Upon seeing them headless, Hellboy dumps their bodies in the lake so their floating heads are helpless against him. Being unable to punch an ectoplasmic monkey leads to him figuring out the strategy for beating it. In general, he prefers opponents he can get his hands on over ghosts. His upbringing under Bruttenholm informed this somewhat, as he was taught fluency in the Lumerian language from a young age, has read at least some of the Bible (leading to him testing a sculpture of Moloch for blood), and true to his rebellious nature, taught Abe Sapien how to hot wire a truck!

Not everything requires big brains though, as he’ll also interrupt a sleeping spell in the middle of its invocation by a sorcerer by just knocking out the sorcerer with his hand and deliberately breaking Obsidian Danse sorcerer’s hands to prevent them from spellcasting. On the other hand, complex magic is in his wheelhouse, carving a line through a magic emblem on a foe’s skin to disrupt its magic. Lastly, Hellboy seems pretty knowledgeable on ships, setting sail solo on one, making a flag, and recognizing the fact that a 19th century style ship is inauthentic based on having no sails.

Equipment

Right Hand of Doom

Upon his birth, Hellboy’s father, Azzel would cut his son’s right hand and replace it with the Right Hand of Doom! The origin of this hand is actually quite interesting as it came from the beings called The Watchers, specifically The Watcher named Anum, who is the creator of Ogru Jahad. Throughout the years more and more humans tried learning the details of this arm but came to no avail as not even scientists could crack the code for it. Hellboy’s journey with it began when as a boy, he used the Right Hand as a matchbox to light cigarettes.

When it comes to actual combat Hellboy is actually versatile with it, using it as a shield against other weapons or as a dangerous melee weapon that sends demons away with a single punch. It’s so tough that even as a child, a knife will break upon contact. This carries over to adulthood, where he deliberately blocks sharp weapons like axes, blades, and swords so they shatter against it. This extends to powerful artifacts like the Hunping, a powerful artifact which releases a bunch of souls, Ualac’s fire infused sword, and the sword of Blackbeard himself. The neat thing the arm does have that helps Hellboy is that any damage done to the arm Hellboy himself will not feel at all. Hellboy’s been bitten a bunch on the Hand and no effect is done on it. This arm also isn’t actually made of stone, despite looking like it, just something with similar attributes and arcane characteristics. It’s also stated that if Hellboy dies with the Right Hand still attached, “his death will bleed into it and poison it against” whoever killed him. Even when severed, it will reattach itself to the investigator once it notices his presence.

Guns/The Samaritan

If there’s anything Hellboy loves to use, it’s his numerous handguns, able to pack heat with them. The most iconic is the one known as The Samaritan (seen above), but there’s a slight common misconception. It’s actually a movie exclusive weapon and Hellboy’s guns in the comics are mostly unnamed ones. Still, it’s an iconic weapon for Hellboy, so we figured it was right to include. It’s a revolver with four chambers with a muzzle velocity of 1775 feet per second. The bullets in the Samaritan are custom made by Hellboy himself. The bullets contain holy water, clove leaf, silver shavings, and white oak, and are larger than regular rounds. He also carries tracking bullets for the gun, but it’s less that they home in on his target and rather they drip green blood, so Hellboy can follow its trail. The bullets pack a punch too, piercing through golden soldier armor and punching through numerous columns and a demon. This ammunition comes in nine different types for specialized uses during missions, including explosive rounds and holy shrapnel.

In the comics, Hellboy carries several other unnamed handguns. The most well known is a single pistol break-action pistol known given to him by the Torch of Liberty. Despite being a single shot, it’s a powerful one. He also has a custom .50-caliber handgun/rifle that could drop a rhino, a flare gun, a gun with explosive bullets that splits apart a tree branch and owns a special blowdart gun that disperses magic in anything or anyone it hits with its blowdart. Hellboy also has special bullets with a cleat material filled with a blowing blue liquid that’s the blood of an incubus, which is useful for succubus since them and incubus’s bloods don’t mix (yes, we really know how oddly specific this is).

Excalibur

Because of his heritage, Hellboy is part of the same bloodline as King Arthur, allowing him to wield Excalibur! While on paper the blade might seem like a more fancy standard sword, it actually has some nice abilities, such as being able to damage Nimue the Blood Queen, who normally would not be harmed by normal mortal weaponry, but with Excalibur is able to be sliced up into pieces. Along with his Prince Of Hell form (More on that later) Hellboy is also able to create gateways from hell that allows demons to venture onto earth, but also allows him to throw people into Hell such as in the 2019 movie where he did the same thing to defeat Nimue! It’s also able to supposedly raise an army for him to lead…but he’s never used it that way and in fact rejected them, so this part isn’t really applicable for him in battle. The last thing of note from the blade is the possibility that it allowed Hellboy to heal much faster than normal as after he suffers a spear to the chest Hellboy was able to heal much quickly then he normally would.

Crown of the Apocalypse

And upon his brow is set a crown of flame. This ancient demonic crown is normally invisible on Hellboy’s head, but is revealed when his true potential as the harbinger of the apocalypse is realized. It even causes his normally filed horns to regrow. The demon Ualac stole the crown to harness its power for himself, with the Crown seemingly clearing his mind and making him wiser. This attempt was unsuccessful as he was imprisoned once more upon being defeated by Hellboy. Hellboy renounced it and it was taken by Astaroth, though Hellboy has transformed since then showing the transformation is more innate.

Big Baby

In Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy would use this quite frankly impractical oversized, Gatling gun-like shotgun that really shouldn’t work… but it does and it carries six rounds. Instead of firing normal shotgun rounds though, it fires powerful explosives that Hellboy used to take down a huge tree kaiju. Because of its ridiculous (…but cool) design, Hellboy can use it with his oversized arm as well.

Sword of Storms

In the animated movie, Hellboy would use the Sword of Storms for a considerable amount of time. While it looks like a normal katana, it also was inscribed with words of enchantment. This lets the sword seal away demons with a good strike. In the lore, it let a samurai contend with the demons Lightning and Thunder. Upon picking up the katana, Hellboy was transported to a different dimension that the sword itself created (more on this later) and he only got out after breaking the sword himself. Breaking the sword does free the demons trapped inside…but later on, Hellboy after a long fight is able to stab them again with the broken pieces, so the sealing properties oddly still work.

Note: It’s unclear if he kept the sword after this movie (especially since it’s broken now…), but we’re listing it just to be comprehensive.

Grenades & Explosives

Some people get work phones or work laptops, but B.P.R.D. has work grenades. These are standard issue for operatives on the field like Hellboy, usually in the form of Vulcan grenades. There are various yields these kinds of grenades can reach, but some of the most dangerous are the Vulcan 40 and 50, which are powerful enough to blow the top off a mountain. The movies even introduce the Vulcan 60. Naturally, he doesn’t just carry regular grenades, but different types should the need arise. Hellboy’s had concussion grenades, magnesium flare charges, thermite charges, and flashbangs.

Vasilisa’s Gifts

Vasilisa gave Hellboy two of her prized possessions. While they may seem like ordinary items, they’re way more potent than you think. To describe them:

Mjollnir

No, not the one from Marvel before you get too starry eyed.

After the mysterious resurrection of the king of Frost Giants known as Thrym – previously slain by Thor in ancient times – the weapon of choice for the god of thunder had resurfaced on earth. While no mortal man was able to wield it, when Hellboy began to investigate and inspect the warhammer, the spirit of Thor awoke within the hammer (as well as a serpentine pendent Hellboy also acquired during), allowing Hellboy himself to wield the mighty weapon to bring down Thrym once and for all, at the cost of it being permanently stuck to his right hand during.

As you may expect, Mjollnir is monstrously strong, being able to obliterate lesser demons in a single strike or blast apart large masses of concrete with a single swing. With the spirit of the Thunder God within influencing Hellboy, it led him to even being able to smash apart the toughest of Giants from Norse times; including the most powerful of them all known as Hraesvelg, or even Thor’s own sister Hyndla. Giants aside, he was also able to use the hammer to kill the likes of Garm, an elephant-sized wolf beast, and break the bones of Thrym himself.

Of course, he can also channel lightning with Mjollnir, summoning it from the sky and either blasting it at his enemies, or even sending it through the earth itself to stagger and fry anyone caught in its path. Even the most deadly of giants can be brought under by a single zap from this weapon in Hellboy’s hand.

As well as this, it seems the pendant and warhammer also may provide Hellboy with further resistance to extreme cold and heat, as he both broke out of being frozen, and also withstood the heat of Logi; a nine-foot tall monster made out of fire.

That said though, wielding a weapon of the gods has its downsides too. With the warrior spirit of Thor still inside the hammer, and for a time this would either completely overtake Hellboy’s personality, or even drive him mad at points, at one time leading Hellboy to nearly killing Abe. Not to mention the hammer is stuck to his hand while in use, leaving him a bit more limited with what his right hand can do. Lastly, the serpentine pendant around Hellboy’s neck seems to serve as an anchor for Thor’s spirit, and once his spirit leaves, Mjollnir can’t be wielded anymore.

In the end, Thor’s spirit and Hellboy are able to come together to triumph over and kill Thrym, allowing Thor’s spirit to leave in peace. Hellboy would relinquish Mjollnir to some dwarves that were closely tied to the legends, but it is said that perhaps one day Thor’s spirit may return to his warhammer, and perhaps one day Hellboy may need to wield the power of the God of Thunder once more. (So of course, this being “standard” for Hellboy is questionable, but we figured it was worth mentioning).

Charms & Talismans

Fitting with spending a lot of time with priests, Hellboy has gathered several charms throughout the years that help him fight demonic creatures. Either kept in his utility belt or coat, he regularly keeps charms, talismans, a rosary blessed by a Pope, and various wards against evil on his person. Because of this, he basically has an unending supply of wacky, magical artifacts for any kind of situation, such as:

Magic Shovel

After Reverend Watts infused a demonic bone gift from the Crooked Man with holy energy into a shovel, he gave it to Hellboy. Red used it to one shot the Crooked Man, though it was destroyed as a result.

Invisibility Flower

This is a special flower that makes Hellboy, well, invisible to most people and demons. He was able to walk past giants without them noticing but it doesn’t seem to make him soundproof. He also sort of just gave up using it once it looked like he was about to be found out, so…

Web of Wyrd Items

In the video game, Web of Wyrd, Hellboy gets some exclusive equipment here not commonly seen in the comics

  • Shotgun: A ranged weapon that delivers great damage up close. This weapon can be upgraded to deal additional health and stun damage, as well as increased enemy knockback
  • Grenade Launcher: Another ranged weapon that fires devastating explosive shells, though it has the longest reload time of Hellboy’s firearms in this game. It can also be upgraded to deal additional stun damage, as well as toughness damage, on top of increased enemy knockback
  • Repel Charm: Creates a shockwave that pushes enemies away
  • Shield Charm: Creates a protective barrier to negate light attacks
  • Attack Charm: Hellboy pulls out a knife that instantly takes away an enemies health and pierces through shields

Other Video Game Items

Hellboy has had other adventures such as video games. He’s gotten some exclusive items in a couple of them including:

Science of Evil:

Dogs of the Night/Asylum Seeker:

Miscellaneous Items

(yes this was on purpose)

Hellboy has quite a few different weapons that don’t fall into any particular category. So here’s us giving them the spotlight.

Abilities

Cambion Physiology

Born from the union of a demonic father and a human witch mother, Hellboy was brought into the world as a half-human, half-demon, a physique that heavily othered him in a primarily judgmental, human world. While he’s made many friendships and connections that helped him feel accepted as a cambion, there’s also no denying this unique body brought with it some unique tools when it came time to kick some ass. For starters, Hellboy grew up super fast and is stronger and faster than any human, which is impressive considering that he weighs a quarter ton. On top of that, he has excellent eyesight, better than most other people at 20/11 vision (which, for the record, is better than 20/20 vision). Hellboy’s leathery hide is also exceptionally tough to tear into, to the point that his skin is thick enough that scarabs or jackals have a hard time biting through it.

With a prehensile tail, our boy rarely finds situations to use it well, but he has whipped it hard enough underwater to break free from the maw of a jackal. His cambion immune system means Hellboy basically never gets sick, and his adept senses allow him to detect and smell hellfire. He has strong senses in general like when he picks up a sound coming from another room. Additionally, Hellboy’s very own blood has magical properties, beautifully depicted when it hits soil and grows flowers. Perhaps less beautifully, if his blood is injected into anyone, it’ll mutate them into an aggressive, demon-like being. With an arcane biology like this, Hellboy is able to see spirits and ghosts, and understand certain arcane languages that are cloaked to sound like gibberish to other people. The movies give their own details on his physiology, like how he has an extended lifespan and physically ages more slowly than humans. They also say he has a unique metabolism that lets him eat as much junk food as he wants with none of the unhealthy effects.

Another pretty unique thing regarding his physiology is that he’s able to step into churches, this might not seem like anything notable at first but traditional demons are unable to step into churches due to their demonic nature. However, Hellboy is most likely because of his human side and his role in the apocalypse. Speaking of humanity, it might affect him in other ways, like how black magic freezing spells don’t affect Roger but do affect him, seemingly due to Roger being “more inhuman”, being a Homonculus. Hellboy also has his body infused with Shakti, which is an energy that all living things have, but unlike others Hellboy’s Shakti is on a whole other level, being noted to be able to power up a whole flying fleet!

One of the most impressive aspects of Hellboy’s unique state of being has to be his absurd levels of stamina. He’s been awake for 3 weeks straight, requiring 6 days of sleep afterwards, and he’s said that he doesn’t need to sleep to the same capacity that we do. All during one mission, Hellboy fought monster after monster for several hours straight, withstood extreme full body physical and mental pain, fell farther than he ever fell before down a pit, continued fighting later on pure adrenaline after briefly losing consciousness, and climbed a mountain several miles high for 24 hours right after all of that. Needless to say, if there’s ever a need to fight for hours and hours on end, he’s gonna have no problem enduring a gauntlet if he needs to.

Pyrokinesis

When it comes to powers a demon is set to have, Pyrokinesis is up with the one most standard demons mostly have such as Hellboy! While in his base form Hellboy doesn’t show the use of his fire powers besides one questionable instance of him setting a silver button on fire, in his higher forms he’s shown to be able to create giant blasts of fire showing its true destruction power.

Regeneration

Being half-demon has its perks when your job is to fight things that would instantly put any Joe Schmoe six feet under. Specifically, Hellboy has better healing than a human, and is a quick natural healer at that, though particularly grievous wounds take several hours to fully self-mend. For example, suffering lacerations all over his body is no biggie since they’ll heal up “quickly”, and he can just walk off getting shot by a revolver multiple times. Similarly, whenever his skin and stomach start blistering, Hellboy knows he can power through the pain since it’d heal, even when it comes to injuries such as losing enough blood that it’ll kill any normal human, but Hellboy powered through.

hough, his healing normally occurs “soon enough”, meaning it takes some time for his body to patch himself up. This is most prominent whenever he gets impaled, where he usually says he’ll be okay in a few hours, which is around how long it takes that mentioned instance. Other times, Hellboy can survive impalement, but it leaves him feeling woozy. His best showing against that kind of wound was when he had a spear fully driven through his chest and out his back, but this wound started to near-immediately begin closing up and healing shortly afterwards. In the movies, Hellboy can heal minor injuries and bleeding almost immediately with his supernatural healing, and even quickly heal internal lung injuries and an open impalement wound once the weapon is pulled out of him. Although, enough blood loss in the films left him wobbly and weak too, regardless of his healing factor.

Supernatural Willpower

Be it because of his demon blood or his pure stubbornness, Hellboy has shown to have to have quite the willpower that even surprises several demons. The main example of his willpower comes in the form of stopping himself from transforming into his Prince of Hell form several times. Even after he is constantly pressed about accepting his fate and true destiny, Hellboy was able to stop his transformation and rip off the horns of his true self, quite literally in fact!

Web of Wyrd Abilities

In the video game, Web of Wyrd, Hellboy has some abilities that can be of nice assistance in battle:

  • Payback Finisher: If Hellboy takes enough damage, he can perform a payback attack that deals a devastating amount of damage on the enemy
  • Brace: A form of defense where Hellboy blocks an attack at the last possible moment to reduce its damage and fills up energy to do a Payback Finisher
  • Dodge Counter: If Hellboy dodges an enemy attack at the last possible moment, he’ll return the favor with a powerful attack
  • “Boom!”: If an enemy is stunned, Hellboy can use this attack on them to deal a massive amount of damage that sends them flying away
  • Revive: If Hellboy falls, he’ll be able to get a second chance and will be revived, but only once

Web of Wyrd Blessings

In Web of Wyrd, Hellboy can receive some blessings that give him some minor buffs or abilities depending on what Hellboy chooses:

  • Blessing of Urdr: Increases toughness or maximum health
  • Blessing of Skuld: Increases Hellboy’s fortune or grants him a better chance at getting health pickups from enemies
  • Blessing of Deneveux: Grants Hellboy abilities to reflect damage dealt by the enemy which can be applied to Hellboy’s right hand of doom, his firearms, and his charms
  • Blessing of Verdandi: Increases maximum ammo capacity or reduces the cooldown times on charms
  • Blessing of Vodyanik: Grants Hellboy abilities to make his enemies stick in place for a short period of time due to sudden fear, Hellboy can apply this ability to his right hand of doom, his firearms, and his charms
  • Blessing of Erebus: Grants Hellboy abilities to do more environmental damage on the enemy, Hellboy can apply this buff to his right hand of doom, his firearms, and his charm
  • Blessing of the Faithless King: Grants Hellboy more attack damage with each subsequent hit he deals, which Hellboy can apply to his right hand of doom, his firearms, and his charms

Science of Evil Mechanics & Moves

In the Science of Evil video game, Hellboy would use some abilities that helped him turn the edge in combat, such as:

Resistances

As one of the toughest B.P.R.D. agents out there, Hellboy’s experiences against a neverending laundry list of mystical and supernatural threats has shown off how resilient he really is. Whether it be from his biology or his unnatural willpower, Hellboy can push through almost anything.

Forms

Devil Heart

Should Hellboy tap into his demonic heritage, he’ll enter this form complete with grown horns and the Crown of the Apocalypse. In the form of rage, his physical strength and durability are heightened and is able to use the power of fire more freely especially with his Right Hand of Doom (see when he can put Excalibur ablaze in the 2019 movie). Since this form embraces his true heritage as Anung Un Rama, Hellboy doesn’t really like to be in this form often.Hell, he tends to get forced into it. Sometimes he’ll go into an uncontrollable rage, slaughtering giants and getting rid of his horns after he’s done. However, ever since he accepted himself and embraced his heritage when he arrived in Hell after he died (yes really), he has since been able to control it much more easily.

Prince of Hell

Hellboy’s full power he awakened to in Hell, he becomes a huge giant, able to match the height of mountains. Now even stronger than before, he can take down giant monsters in hell, fighting off legions of them, able to unleash a huge fiery AOE around him, and even call upon lightning from the sky with his Right Hand of Doom before throwing it at his enemies. Though Hellboy has only used this mode once in hell, it’s surely a force to be reckoned with and is capable of bringing down hell itself. In the movies, this Hellboy has a Prince of Hell form too. While it doesn’t increase his size, it does amplify his strength and regrow his horns once he speaks his true name. In this state, he can break free of enchanted binding chains that he couldn’t break free from before, and stabbing Rasputin with one of his horns ended up causing a Behemoth to emerge from Rasputin’s wound. The main drawback from this version is that he burns from holy artifacts and is mentally corrupted to behave more primally evil, requiring Broom’s rosary and some encouragement to break out of that mindset. After doing so, he effectively swore off using this state again and sticking to being himself.

Scaling

The hero of our story has faced all manner of threats but has successfully conquered them. He should scale to most of the following feats, from his colleagues in the B.P.R.D. to the Ogdru Jahad itself. There’s going to be hell to pay once Hellboy is involved.

B.P.R.D.

The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, or B.P.R.D. for short, is Hellboy’s old organization that took him in since his arrival on earth and raised him to be the fighter he is today. When it comes to scaling Hellboy to everyone in the organization it is a fairly simple matter. When it comes to the average humans obviously Hellboy should be above all of them and if anything upscale anything they could do. As for Hellboy’s main team it should also be fairly simple as he is treated as the best soldier the organization has and thus above members like Abe and Johann.

Ogdru Jahad

When the watchers came to earth, one specific watcher, Anum, would take fire from the air and give it to a lifeless husk which at night transformed into Ogdru Jahad, or The Dragon as it is also called. Even though in the events of the comic Hellboy was essentially destined to lose against them before meeting, he still showed he could hang around with Jahad as they were both able to match each other blow for blow. Even though at the end of the battle Jahad only lost because Hellboy was given some help, the fact Hellboy could still fight evenly with them for so long proves that scaling is still viable.

Other Demons & Monsters

Besides the big name demons, Hellboy has encountered several other lesser known demons during his decades long career. Similarly to him scaling to B.P.R.D., Hellboy is treated as the top dog when it comes to power among other demons and has very easily taken down other demons such as The Babayaga and Rasputin the Sorcerer to just name a few. So scaling is very simple.

Weaknesses

(Hellboy reading the comments on the old Nero vs Hellboy blog)

Hellboy is powerful, but he certainly has his limits. He in fact has died by getting his heart ripped and it’s been confirmed several times he did in fact die during the events of The Storm and The Fury (and it’s confirmed he’s bound for Hell whenever he dies). While he was eventually revived, it took a long while (lasting from the events of The Wild Hunt to The Devil You Know), making it inapplicable in combat. Even in the films, it’s confirmed that piercing Hellboy’s heart would be fatal, and grievous injuries such as a weapon impaled in his chest that threatened it left him hospitalized and needing outside help. And, while he can take some serious punishment and damage, specifically overloading him with induced pain can pass a threshold and cause Hellboy to pass out.

In contrast, in the movies, Hellboy struggled against the regeneration of the Golden Soldiers after they healed from anything he threw at them, requiring him to call a duel with Prince Nuada to halt the onslaught. Early on in the series, Hellboy’s aim has some particularly dreadful statements, with his training resulting in terrible marksmanship scores and general bad aim, but he’s since trained to improve this in his later years. Knowing a demon’s true name in the Mignolaverse also grants power over them, including Hellboy, though he is able to break out of this control upon embracing Anung Un Rama no longer being his real name.

Before The Verdict

How fast are Devil May Cry’s characters?

Devil May Cry has been a somewhat controversial topic for how fast these characters are. We want to make it clear that the following is just the current team’s take mainly and not meant to say previous takes are “wrong.” A lot of discussion and opinions changed during the course of this blog.

Starting with the DMC1 flight speed feat which happens shortly after Mundus makes a universe. We do know that this space is real and the area is described as Dante and Mundus being surrounded by a sea of stars. Though somewhat vague, we can measure a distance. First they were surrounded by a sea of stars with no planet in sight and then later on, Dante flew to a planet with its own atmosphere. The distance would be about 4.3716e+10m for arriving at a planet not in sight. The more important thing to figure out is the timeframe. Though there is indeed a cut in between scenes, there was a cut earlier on after Mundus makes a universe and then talks to Dante and we have no reason to assume they took more than a few seconds to start talking, which is likely the case here. Also, Trinity of Fates, an updated take on the scene, shows Dante flying seamlessly from the starry sky to the planet with no cut in a short timeframe, supporting that we can take the cutscene as is for the timeframe. This gets us about 31.7 to 48 times FTL, depending if we use the original DMC1 cutscene or the Trinity of Fates. It should be noted it is possible the feat is even faster if you use the closest star location to earth, which would drastically increase the distance, but that is arguably a bit generous, so the updated end is more “safe.”

To briefly talk about Vergil blitzing the lightspeed Petal Rays though (which are confirmed beams of light and use a composite reflector), Nero’s dad can use the Judgement Cut End to move at ultra-fast speeds. Vergil can use the mechanic known as “Concentration” to build said speed for his most devastating attack. It is possible to argue that maybe they can only achieve this speed when concentrating demonic energy, but it’s not so clear cut. Nero himself can react to and dodge the Judgement Cut End without any DE needed and Dante can of course famously Royalguard it entirely, properly reacting to it as well. So it is possible to argue it scales to their base speeds, at least when it comes to reactions (not movement). Measuring how fast Vergil himself moves gets 11.9 times FTL. However measuring the in-tandem slashes that happens in a frame thanks to a free camera mod (shoutouts to the DMC modding community btw) gets much higher results in 156 times FTL. Neither are wrong, it just depends on what you value more.

Next up is the infamous Mundus creating a universe. We have confirmation it is indeed a real space and Mundus in fact created it. Though the initial shockwave for the sea of stars would be about billions FTL, the full universal completion would be quadrillion times FTL. DMC has a UES with demonic energy and Mundus is using his to create a universe in a short timeframe. Dante and Mundus themselves react to it/move in-tandem with it, so the scene wouldn’t make much sense if they were quadrillions of times slower. This feat is actually more supported than you think within the DMC2 novel, Dante fights and avoids “numerous arms” from Void Mundus, a being who merged with the universe and is described as the Heart of the Demon world and the Nexus of its energies, completely surrounding Dante (and waves of power are described to radiate from the battle). This also isn’t the only feat in the series as in the Netflix show, Sparda made a barrier between the two universes in a short amount of time too, which would also get similar speeds.

Next up is to tackle the incalculable speed feats and there’s technically two. First up is the earlier mentioned Void Mundus feat, who had merged with the universe, completely surrounding Dante, making him omni-present. Dante can avoid his attacks (rather easily in fact), so the argument is that he would have to be “infinite speed” to dodge an omnipresent force. However, we simply don’t have a solid time frame how Void Mundus was moving, so while it’s good supporting evidence for other feats, we feel that reacting to a being that’s omnipresent doesn’t automatically qualify you for such speeds without more evidence.

Second and lastly is the Argosax “transcending” time and distance which would be immeasurable speeds. However, some translations say they are simply manipulating time rather than transcending. We feel that manipulating makes more sense since it mainly uses teleportation to fight against Dante, cutting any amount of distance between them. Transcending distance likely isn’t literal, at least not without extreme high ends.

Summary

  • The DMC1 flight speed gets about 31-48 times FTL considering the distance and it’s unlikely to be a minute
  • The Petal Ray feat is possible to argue for their base reaction speed and some calcs can get it higher in the hundreds FTL measuring in-tandem slashes.
  • Mundus creating a universe uses his demonic energy which is DMC’s universal energy system, Dante and Mundus do move in-tandem with it and it’s surprisingly supported pretty well
  • The incalculable speed feats likely don’t check out and are too questionable to use

At the end of the day, we just wanted to reevaluate these feats honestly after a lot of criticism received and have a healthy discussion about it. We’re not here to say anyone’s wrong for disagreeing, these are just our stances after several talks and there’s no “objective” way to look at them. Nero is still well supported to be above FTL speeds regardless (especially compared to his opponent if you have been paying attention) and we’ll talk more about that in the verdict.

DMC Cosmology

The Universe of Devil May Cry has evolved over time as more media has been released. Originally the games and its Canon side media depicted the existence of a single universe, split between the Human and Demon World. The second novel introduced the existence of parallel universes that seem to follow the theory of Many Worlds Interpretation, an alternate world depicting potential outcomes that could have occurred from the main timeline. Only a single one of these was ever explored in the novel but it did mention the existence of other dimensions. Peak of Combat gives a much more extensive look into the multiverse of Devil May Cry that we will explore here.

Starting off with the main universe, the Human World and Demon World are two halves of the original universe that existed at the very beginning of time, forever separated by a dimensional wall that cuts off both. Side media like the manga and Anime have confirmed that the current narrative intention is that Capcom views both realms as universes, not just planets. In between both dimensions are two different pocket universes, the Mirror World which is a copy of the Human World populated by certain demons. There is also the Grayworld, a vast realm that drifts in the space between Human & Demon Worlds also referred to as a “sunless void” where a previous Demon Lord, The Hermit / Nightwahter, had been cast out of.

While the Human World is just based on our known universe, the Demon World is a massive cosmological structure holding several different realms ruled by its respective demon lord. The entire universe is interwoven with a rift called the Chaotic Timeline, which has different laws of space and time than the Demon World itself. The Demon World also likely contains the Abyss, a place from which one could watch over the entire world. Demons can be born within the Abyss, which evidently encompasses multiple “biomes” such as the Polar Abyss, the Violet Abyss, and even a Data Abyss associated with the souls of digital beings like Sigma (yeah, that one). There are many more sub-realms potentially such as the Memory Corridor, but they aren’t as elaborated on in lore.

As for the multiverse, it is made of many “what if” universes, alternate versions of the main DMC timeline with various differences such as a universe where Nelo Angelo was a rebel against Mundus. While a number has not yet been confirmed for how many of these exist, the games and novels have explored 4 of these (The main timeline, the novel parallel timeline, and the reboot timeline). It is possible the amount of these that exist are countless, as the second novel implies the multiverse works of Many Worlds Interpretation, or MWI.

Universal Hellboy?

Hellboy is a relative unknown in the versus space and it makes sense to wonder if his cosmic arguments hold up considering his opponent here. The answer is…more complicated than you would think. To go through them…

The Black Flame

In the Hellboy universe there exists a character known as The Black Flame, while this character has had its mantle  be tossed around a bit, the important one we need to talk about is Landish Pope. This version of the Black Flame was capable of having its power be felt throughout The Void, which is the original prison of Ogdru Johad. Now there can be some debate on the actual size of the Void and whether it’s actually the size of a universe but the one thing that is not debatable is the feat itself.

So with the feat being valid that would mean this argument for Uni Hellboy is valid right? Well partly, the main issue that would come with this argument is scaling. At the time of this event in the comics Hellboy himself was dead and still in hell so he himself never fought the Black Flame. This leads to the only person who actually defeated the Black Flame being Liz but even then she was struggling against Black Flame, even when she was using her full power she was still being thrown around like a ragdoll by The Black Flame. It took outside help from a prayer for Liz to eventually defeat The Black Flame, even Liz herself states that she could not even touch him before the prayer and now he is struggling, showing that either Liz was being amped or The Black Flame being weakened by the prayer. Either way there’s no real way for Hellboy to scale back to The Black Flame, meaning this argument for Hellboy reaching uni is no good.

Johann using the Infinite

In the comics there exists the Sledgehammer suit which the goat Johann uses. Now the important thing about this suit is that it harnesses the power of the infinite. So to save the big beefy explanation, with the Infinite, Johann was able to essentially control the universe inside the infinite to his whim, with him very blatantly saying he’s igniting the suns, turning planets and the heavens and Johann uses this energy to defeat Ogdru in its dragon form again. So once again we are given another blatant uni feat, but the question of how do we scale this back to Hellboy makes this argument similar to the Black Flame one.

The reason for this is because everyone involved doesn’t really have a reliable way to physically scale it. For one Johann himself was using the suit and not his own power and even then this actually kills Johann after performing the feat. But Ogdru on the other hand did actually survive it…but it’s not in the traditional sense. While Ogdru did survive it, it was actually because of its true more gassy form not being killed (referred to the “darkness” here) and going to another body to host, which is not a form you can scale Hellboy to as nobody actually fights that form. This is important to note as the form Ogdru did use in this feat, the dragon avatar that Hellboy does fight, is literally killed by the infinite and breaks into pieces. Even if you want to say somehow Ogdru survived against this attack in a physical sense, Hellboy as the Prince Of Hell was still struggling against Rasputin using the Ogdru’s essence in their fight and even lost an arm in its fight, snapping his neck to win, suggesting that Hellboy can not fully scale to Ogdru’s full power. While you can possibly argue the entire life-force is contained in the Right Hand of Doom at the very end of the series, this is somewhat vague and the problems with it scaling back to Hellboy’s physical power apply.

So overall the feat itself is good, but at most you can only argue a slight downscale for Hellboy at his peak in power.

Hellboy’s Arm “breaking the
walls between Heaven and Earth”

In the Hellboy in Hell series, it’s stated that a mysterious demonic man with no name is making an army that can “break down the walls that separate Hell from Heaven and Earth” and the main thing that can bring life to the army is Hellboy’s Right Hand of Doom.

…And well, that’s about it. It’s not elaborated on HOW the army would do that or if they could do it in one go (unlikely since it apparently requires a whole army). Even if they could, all it is stated that Hellboy can do is BRING LIFE to the army to break down the walls, not necessarily the arm itself has power to do it. Hellboy himself states he doesn’t want it anyway. So this feat just doesn’t work out and is too vague to be concrete.

Sword Of Storms’ Dimension

In the Sword of Storms animated movie, upon picking up the titular sword, Hellboy is transported to a supernatural dimension. Hellboy does physically interact with it during the movie, it has a proper day and night cycle, it’s described as another time and place and described as having a “cosmos” in it. It’s confirmed that the sword itself makes the dimension. It should be noted breaking the sword itself should not be a feat since only the wielder (Hellboy in this case) can break it and he just sorta accidentally slams on a huge stone.

That being said, the demons in the movie named Thunder and Lightning (creative names, we know) do clash with the sword several times. They are only defeated because the sword has a special sealing ability (that works even when it’s broken). Considering they clash with the sword but still ultimately lose to it, a downscale to universal should be fine. Hellboy fights the demons themselves and does damage to them, so he would scale via that. There is some debate to be had with it but this is a feat that does likely check out.

Summary

Hellboy’s best bet to reach universal levels of power is the Sword of Storm’s feat, but it is not without debate. You can POSSIBLY argue the Johann feat but scaling back to Hellboy requires a hefty amount of assumptions. Everything else is too vague and not concrete enough for it to scale back to Hellboy physically. The verdict will talk about this more.

Verdict

Skill

In terms of skill, it’s harder than you would think to find a definitive winner. Just to get it out of the way though, Hellboy does indeed have several statements he’s a poor shot with a gun. He has a hard time hitting enemies even when they’re standing still sometimes and while Nero doesn’t have an explicit statement about his aim with a gun, his fire power has kept up with Dante who’s done all sorts of impressive aim shots such as like when aimed Yamato so accurately into the Savior’s chest crystal. If it was exclusively about who would win a fast draw competition, Hellboy would struggle to win.

That being said, Hellboy has shown improvement with firearms such as when he shot demons while on a moving aircraft or targeting and shooting Wink’s hand before he could hit Abe. And even then, while he may be not the best with guns, he makes up for it with everything else. He’s skilled at close quarters combat, taking on hordes of demons on his own and winning, and even fast weird teleporting vampire ladies he’s been able to handle. Nero may be a prodigy as a holy knight and they’re considered some of the best in hand to hand combat in his world, but Hellboy has also dealt with characters like Koshchei who’s considered a gifted soldier as well and has kept up and defeated Nuada, someone who’s a master of sword fighting and had years of practice…hey that’s just like Nero! He’s skilled enough to parry blows meant for his heart and was able to disarm Nuada effectively.

Hellboy is also likely the smarter combatant here, doing all sorts of resourceful things. He’s way more used to using the environment against the opponent than Nero, such as when he used a fishing spear and a wooden ship pole. He’s also way more used to stealing his enemy’s weapons and using it against them, such as when he fought Koshchei and used his sword against him or when he stole an arm of a skeleton monster and it’s possible he could do something similar to Nero’s Devil Breakers. While Nero has used an opponent’s own weapons against them before such as the Angelo Knights and Vergil, he hasn’t done it nearly as much as Hellboy. We want to make it clear Nero’s a skilled fighter in his own right and being able to keep up with Dante and Vergil who have defeated scums of the underworld in Devil May Cry, it’s possible to argue Nero being able to keep up and adapt to Hellboy’s more unorthodox style of battle too. However, Nero’s only in his early 20s and Hellboy is a lot older than Nero, having helped with the B.P.R.D. for years. While it’s not a stomp per se, Hellboy takes the edge in skill and experience.

Arsenal & Abilities

With Hellboy taking an early advantage in skill, it’s important to get into the meat of the fight with how much stuff they can throw at each other.

Going over their arsenals, it’s surprising how much they can match each other. Both of course have their signature demonic arms with the Devil Bringer and Right Hand of Doom, both tough enough to use as a powerful defense and offense. Both have swords they can literally light on fire for more damage with the Red Queen and Excalibur. Both have signature guns they like to use. And while it’s questionable if they’re “canon”, both have healing items that can restore energy and revive from death (meaning neither would have a definitive edge).

Hellboy’s history throughout all of his comics, movies and games has a lot going for him though. He has even more guns with firearms like the Big Baby that fires explosives, all sorts of grenades from concussion ones to flashbangs, Vasilisa’s Gifts could help him control the battlefield with their huge AOE, especially the comb to potentially trap Nero. He has various charms, including a skull that can nullify magic spells and the Web of Wyrd items do come in clutch with the grenade launcher, a shield charm that can protect him from light attacks and the Attack charm that could get through shields and attack the opponent itself. Nero mainly has his Devil Breakers and while they are useful, Nero can only carry so much and if he’s not careful, a good hit from Hellboy could break them, limiting their usefulness.

If we were to include what’s considered more “non-standard” for both of them, Hellboy gains even more than Nero. The latter of which would mainly get Yamato decisively and while a potent weapon, it’s mainly just another sword. Hellboy would get Mjollnir and while he’s not going to break universes (no relation to Marvel) Hellboy would gain powerful lightning AOE. The Magic Shovel has one shotted the Crooked Man with its holy energy and the Sword of Storms, while another sword, has powerful potent sealing abilities that could catch Nero off guard. There’s of course Hellboy’s crazy stamina too. He’s been awake for three weeks straight (though he required six days of sleep after…he earned it) and even climbed a mountain for 24 hours. If the fight were to last long enough, Hellboy had a lot to throw at Nero in a fight of attrition. Hellboy takes versatility.

Of course, while Hellboy has a lot of weapons to use, that doesn’t necessarily mean his overall abilities are better, which we’ll talk about now. First of all, Nero’s not far behind in stamina. He’s comparable to Dante who fought Urizen for at least a full day straight and while you can argue Dante was struggling the entire fight, that has nothing to do with stamina and he was clearly trying the whole time. Regardless, it’s incredibly unlikely the fight would drag on for a whole day if both are trying to kill each other for several reasons.

In terms of regeneration, the Devil May Cry’s character was clearly superior. Nero can survive impalements to the heart, shots to the head, regenerate lost limbs and come back from being melted down. Hellboy on the other hand can mainly survive and heal from impalements but while it’s clearly better than most humans, there have been times that’d imply it would take a while before kicking in and other times it has left him tired as well. So while it’s likely Nero couldn’t regenerate from deadly hits forever, neither could Hellboy and with one’s regeneration clearly being superior, it’s very likely Nero could win a war of attrition.

But hold on you may ask, isn’t Hellboy immortal? He’s as “deathless as Koshchei” claims some in the comic and it’s implied by some he can only die if he chooses too. There’s context to be had with them. While it’s true Koshchei can’t die normally in Hellboy’s world, the main reason he can’t is because his soul was…in an egg, inside a duck, inside a rabbit and inside a goat, making this a clear exaggeration of Hellboy’s longevity since he doesn’t have such a condition. About him only dying if he chooses to, it’s implied by this scene in the comic, Hellboy himself isn’t sure if he died here. This scene reads more as metaphorical rather than literal and literally in the scene after, he wakes up from his impalement and clearly feels exhausted after. Most damningly of all is when he straight up did indeed die when he got his heart ripped out (with confirmation it’s indeed intended to be his death), meaning one good hit to his heart or brain would likely do him over. While it’s possible he could revive later (like in the Devil You Know storyline), it would simply take too long for it to count.

That means Nero can use the piercing abilities of the Blue Rose to fire bullets into Hellboy’s chest…that’ll explode inside him and possibly destroy his heart. Hellboy is resistant to fire, meaning Nero amping up the Red Queen with Exceed wouldn’t add much more damage…but it’s still a sword and would still hurt Hellboy if it lands. There’s also the Devil Bringer where Nero could punch Hellboy really hard with extreme force or even possibly drain Hellboy of his demonic energy if Nero gets a good grab (though this is somewhat speculatory). And while Hellboy has a lot of guns that could overwhelm Nero, he could potentially negate or even reflect projectiles back at Hellboy with his Devil Breaker Gerbera, backfiring on him.

Hellboy’s Attack Charm wouldn’t really do anything extra to Nero since it’s not really a durability negation but rather gets around shields and armor…which Nero doesn’t really have (unless you count his Devil Bringer I suppose), so it would just do normal damage if it hits that Nero likely could just regenerate from. The Shield Charm can only last so long against someone like Nero and it requires a recharge between uses, making it unreliable against an aggressive opponent. The Magic Shovel has one shotted the Crooked Man…but only because of its holy properties that Nero resists, putting the brakes on it. Blessings such as Vodyanik that could freeze enemies in fear wouldn’t do much to Nero either since Hellboy has to actually hit Nero with it in the first place and he resists fear manipulation anyway. Vasilisa’s Comb being able to grow a forest and potentially trap Nero has a surprisingly slick counter with the Devil Bringer being able to simply wither trees away upon contact.

While Hellboy is quicker on his feet than you’d think, he’s not quite as mobile as Nero. Nero can use his devil breaker wires or the Devil Bringer’s Hell Bound ability to maneuver around the battlefield, evade any big hits with Table Hopper’s increased movement, Air Hike and Flap Top to jump multiple times in the air and of course take flight when he activates his Devil Trigger. In case his Devil Trigger runs out though, he can always just use his Punchline Devil Breaker instead to maneuver around the arena. And while Nero can’t spam it forever with his limited uses, one use of Ragtime’s time slowing ability of the arena is all he needs to lock in and potentially land the fatal blow.

Hellboy does have two potential wincons with his swords Excalibur and the Sword of Storms. Let’s start with the Sword of Storms since that’s more of a “non-standard” scenario and its ability to seal. Hypothetically, if Hellboy were to stab and activate Nero with it, it could potentially seal him away since he doesn’t really resist it normally. However, in the context of the movie, Hellboy only went for it when he was nearly defeated by the demons Thunder and Lightning and managed to catch them off guard with the fragmented pieces of the blade, which would be a lot harder against Nero who could likely sense the danger coming. It’s not an option he’d go for right away since he’d rather use the blade as a normal sword (and Hellboy is generally a way more straight forward guy). Even then, in the worst case scenario he manages to catch Nero with it, it’s not the end of the world for him as being fair and allowing Yamato would potentially let him break out of the seal with its ability to open seals too.

The other win condition for Hellboy is thankfully more standard since Excalibur is legit just his sword. He can potentially open a portal to hell with a stab to the ground and toss Nero in, trapping him in there. The main issue though is this is simply not something Hellboy would go for right away as in context of the movie, he only did this near the end of it and he cut Nimue’s head off first before going for it. Also, Nero could once again use Yamato to open a dimension back out. While Nero hasn’t used Yamato with this specific purpose, he’s aware of the ability since he literally watched his dad open a portal right in front of him.

Now let’s address the Yamato and whether or not it should be even allowed for Nero. It’s perfectly fair to question if the katana should be even in this comparison at all (aside from situations where including all non-standard equipment is fair game). That being said, even if we were to exclude it, it wouldn’t matter too much since Nero can summon a spectral version of Yamato regardless in his Devil Trigger form. The attacks are explicitly described to slice through space with Showdown and Maximum Bet, giving Nero powerful options to end the fight instantly, especially there is zero evidence that Hellboy can withstand a spatial cut.

While Hellboy has a lot of stuff to throw at his opponent, Nero himself has a lot of good counters and resistances with his abilities. Nero could reliably fight against most of Hellboy’s options…except for one. The Prince of Hell.

The Prince of Hell towers greatly over Nero, being stated to match the height of mountains. It increases Hellboy’s power immensely, can call upon lightning from the sky to fire at Nero and is able to unleash a huge area of effect with his fire. Suddenly, a random sword strike or shot from Nero’s gun is less effective as taking down Hellboy’s huge body would be a challenge for most. Against most of Hellboy’s opponents, he could have brute forced a win with his giant size…except for Nero.

First of all, while we don’t have a clear reference on how hot Hellboy’s fire is, it took down some giants and caused them to die. Impressive, but Nero has survived through hotter flames before. Nero fought and got near the demon Berial without issue. This is a demon so hot that ordinary creatures would vaporize instantly just for getting near them and Nero fought and defeated them when he was just learning too. Being able to vaporize someone instantly is really hot, so Nero could reliably survive Hellboy’s fire and get near him (if he already didn’t just fly around Hellboy, avoiding it entirely).

Second of all, despite Hellboy’s size as the Prince of Hell, Nero can reliably fight him and defeat him. Nero has fought and defeated the Savior as well who towers over Nero, showing a large size wouldn’t necessarily be enough to defeat him. Nero also scales to Dante and Vergil who cut the Qliphoth tree at the end of Devil May Cry 5. This is important because the tree is huge. Even if you wanted to argue they only cut the roots of the tree (though it made the whole tree die), even the roots were really huge, getting up to 436 meters!

Most damningly at all though is Dante’s fight with Void Mundus in the Devil May Cry 2 prequel novel. Void Mundus is a being that merged with the universe in an alternate timeline and was a void that completely surrounded Dante. Guess what happened? Dante one shot him with his guns and caused the whole void to explode and die and he was in his base form at the time without any special amps or anything. Nero is comparable to DMC5 era Dante who’s gotten much stronger since then, so the descendent of Sparda could likely replicate such a feat and kill Hellboy despite his large size.

That being said, even being strict about all this for some reason…Hellboy’s regeneration doesn’t change or anything. There’s still nothing stopping Nero from attacking Prince of Hell Hellboy’s heart or as the god of Thunder once elegantly put it, always aim for the head. Nero has the mobility with flight to get to Hellboy’s head level and crush his skull…just like he did with the Savior, making it clear it would be a go to option if he sees the Prince of Hell.

There’s a lot going on here, but with his counters to handle mostly everything Hellboy could throw at him and powerful techniques in his own right, Nero takes abilities.

Of course, none of this would matter if Nero couldn’t take power and speed. If Hellboy could take power, he could possibly brute force a win, right? Well…let’s get into the most important category, stats.

Stats

In terms of speed, this is one of the most clear cuts in the matchup. Hellboy’s best reliable speed feat is dodging lightning from the demons Thunder and Lightning (wow!) in the Sword of Storms movie. Granted, you could maybe be picky on if their lightning qualifies as cloud to ground lightning if you want, but for the sake of argument, let’s assume the higher end of mach 95 to 130.57. Hellboy does have some potential relativistic speed feats, but unfortunately, they are not so clear cut. The laser Hellboy supposedly dodges isn’t called a laser anywhere and aside from it sort of looking like one, it’s unclear if it meets any standards of one and he possibly could have just aimed dodged it rather than properly react to it. The accelerator cannon is a bit better since at least it’s called just that but the way the comic is framed, it is possible Hellboy just ducked before the particle cannon was in his line of fire. Still, let’s give Hellboy the benefit of the doubt and take the feats as is, letting him react at 4 to 43% the speed of light.

Nero’s simply way faster. Devil May Cry characters have consistently dodged lasers and rays of light with ease, Nero himself being a good example having dodged Artemis’ lasers. Nero’s kept up with the Sons of Sparda, Dante and Vergil, the former of which can dodge lasers from Nesfasturris, getting us a solid 1.29 times FTL feat and the latter of which can use Judgement Cut End to blitz the Petal Ray laser, that gets 11.9 to 156.97 times FTL and Nero himself can properly react and dodge his father’s ultimate attack! It’s also very possible to push Nero’s speeds even higher, but even just relying on the “safest” ends, the young devil hunter takes the edge in speed without much issue.

Just to put it in perspective, Nero being so much faster suddenly means Hellboy struggles to land a hit on Nero while stopping a lot of potential wincons. Trying to steal Nero’s swords like Yamato and using it against him? Not happening. Breaking his Devil Breakers before he gets a chance to use them? Nope. Even if he were to think about going for them, using Excalibur’s BFR or the Sword of Storm’s sealing abilities? That’s not landing on Nero.

That being said, Hellboy’s giant form as the Prince of Hell and huge area of effect means he doesn’t have to worry about aiming too much, so there stands to be an argument Hellboy could brute force a win if he was stronger. That’s a big if though.

In terms of non-cosmic ends, Hellboy did seem to have a lot going for him. He’s defeated the demons Thunder and Lightning in the Sword of Storms movie where they sustained, uh, storms around the world which gets to 1.122 Teratons of TNT and of course he’s comparable to his colleague Liz who destroyed Malaysia getting 16.7 (don’t you dare say it) Teratons of TNT, putting him comfortably in the country ends. However, Nero is comparable to Urizen and Vergil who ate the Qliphoth tree’s fruit which is said to be more dense than the tree itself which has spread across the whole Earth, placing him at 82.78 Teratons of TNT. We really shouldn’t scale Hellboy’s overall power to Liz lighting the Earth up since she’s crystallized after and doesn’t have power anymore, but for high end benefit of the doubt, let’s do it anyway and say Hellboy is comparable to 2.91 Exatons of TNT. That’s still below when Mundus transformed the Earth into a second demon world, which would get into the Zettatons of TNT for Earth’s GBE.

But we know what you’re here for. You want us to talk about universal feats these characters scale to.

Hellboy has two main universal feats worth looking at. The main one is the Sword of Storms, one where the sword itself created a universe, the demons Thunder and Lightning clash with the blade several times and Hellboy has taken hits, done damage and defeated them. Granted, the main way the demons are defeated is with the Sword of Storm’s sealing properties, so you can argue it’s just a downscale, but the feat and scaling itself is fine and Hellboy’s most solid universal feat. The other main universal feat for Hellboy we got to talk about is Johann using the infinite, but it scaling back to Hellboy is very questionable since Johann only used it to destroy the dragon form (and it was literally destroyed, so the idea the feat supports universal Ogdru Jahad is not the best), not the more intangible form that Hellboy doesn’t fight and possessed another body (being Rasputin in this case). Not to mention, even when fighting endgame Rasputin, Hellboy struggled to defeat him even in his Prince of Hell form. Still, let’s apply the benefit of the doubt and say the Ogdru Jahad did indeed tank a universal busting attack despite the context.

Nero stopped Sin Devil Triggers Dante and Vergil trying to kill each other, was the first actual character to land a hit on Urizen and even defeated Vergil by the end of Devil May Cry 5, solidifying him scaling to past universal feats. This would include Mundus creating a universe in Devil May Cry 1,  Nightmare threatening to destroy the demon world, Argosax going to merge the two realms together and Mundus’ defeat nearly collapsing the demon world. Dante himself has killed Void Mundus who’s stronger than normal Mundus, who merged with the combined human and demon worlds and became a void…and he did so in a huge stomp in his base form. While it’s questionable if Devil Trigger Nero could fully scale to Sin Devil Trigger Dante, even scaling Dante’s base paints a clear picture. Nero heavily upscales Devil May Cry’s universal feats while Hellboy is down scaling his. Nero takes power over Hellboy in this turn of events.

Conclusion

“I couldn’t protect Credo. To this day, I hate myself for not having enough strength. But this time is different. I swear! I’m not letting you die!”

Advantages:

  • Stronger and more consistent universal arguments
  • Faster no matter what
  • Ragtime, flight and other movement options like Table Hopper and Air Hike help Nero avoid any deadly hits
  • Space cutting should work against Hellboy
  • Has the range to deal with Prince of Hell’s large status via Yamato and scaling to Dante/Vergil deal with the Qliphoth tree and Void Mundus
  • Superior Regeneration
  • Better abilities overall
  • Resists a lot of what Hellboy can do, especially his heat AOE
  • Johnny Yong Bosch
  • Is a great boyfriend to Kyrie

Disadvantages:

  • Less experienced overall
  • Smaller arsenal
  • Taking down Prince of Hell Hellboy could be troublesome
  • Could get BFR’d by Excalibur if he’s not given Yamato or sealed away with the Sword of Storms
  • Got his whole bag stolen by Netflix Dante
  • Isn’t in Marvel Vs Capcom (and likely won’t be for another 10 years because of Tokon…)

“But I can promise you two things. One: I’ll always look this good. And two: I’ll never give up on you… ever.”

Advantages:

  • More skilled and experienced overall
  • More versatile
  • Resists the Red Queen’s flame based attacks
  • Prince of Hell’s size could give Nero pause
  • Has potential wincons with the Sword of Storms’ sealing and Excalibur’s BFR…
  • Ron Perlman
  • Del Toro is also a Devil May Cry fan, fun fact!

Disadvantages:

  • Far slower, even highballing Hellboy
  • Less consistent universal scaling and likely weaker regardless
  • Inferior regeneration and would have trouble getting around Nero’s
  • …but unlikely to come out in time before being overwhelmed and too slow to land them reliably regardless
  • No answer to space cutting or Ragtime
  • Hellboy 2019

While Hellboy put up a great fight that would have made his fans proud, Nero managed to outmatch and defeat him in this fight to the death. Hellboy’s strong, scaling to country at least level feats with some debatable universal ends, but Nero had him beat with much more solid scaling, and with Hellboy’s lack of solid speed feats, he unfortunately just couldn’t keep up with the young Devil Hunter.

Perhaps Hellboy could win a couple times with his superior skill and surprising versatility, but Nero’s abilities are just too much for him to overcome with his superior mobility, regeneration and ability to cut through space itself that Anung Un Rama just couldn’t reliably defend against. While the Prince of Hell’s form could perhaps stone wall most of his opponents, Nero had the perfect counters to deal with it.

Overall, Nero was too fast, stronger and his crazy regeneration kept him in the right long enough to get the killing blow.

Hellboy might have tried to pull the trigger on this devil, but Nero showed he’ll never surrender and sent Hellboy back to his doom with his own right hand.

The winner is Nero.

Final Tally

Bonus: Peak of Combat

As everyone should know by now, Devil May Cry has a gacha mobile game called Peak of Combat, developed by Chinese studio Nebula Joy in partnership with Capcom. The game was plagued with fake images going around a few years back, as the game was only available in China until 2023. In 2023 Nebula Joy completely rebranded the game as Peak of Combat 2.0. We want to take a brand new look at the official english version of the game. Everything discussed below is more like a bonus section to this blog and not at all relevant or used for the verdict above. We chose this approach since the game itself is of course rather infamous in the VS scene but we still wanted to include it in some way and properly research it. With that said, let’s take a deep dive. Side Note, links to footage will be provided for all scans below so anyone reading can cross reference the arguments below.

No faked scans were used in the making of this section, taking either from publicly available clips on YouTube or gameplay & screenshots from TheCardinalKing (I spent $30 to fast track progress on the game so I better not hear any faked allegations -Cardinal).

Peak of Combat &
Netflix Anime Continuity

While practically every piece of Devil May Cry media is canon, there are two controversial ones that need to be looked at. The Netflix Anime which very loosely adapts the video games and Peak of Combat, a mobile game made by Chinese studio Nebula Joy with supervision from Capcom.

The anime starts off with a very loose retelling of DMC 3 mixed with elements from the incomplete Devil May Cry 3 manga and the very first novel for the series. It was intended by its director Adi Shankar to have the same “spirit” as the original source material. Adi has mentioned when he adapts material he has two different categories he puts them under, his “bootleg universe” and a separate category where he tries to capture the spirit as close as possible of the source material, and the anime falls under the latter. It was directly supervised by Itsuno before he left Capcom, and the first and second season represent the setting of the series in a decent manner (Saprda sealing the Demon World and the cosmology are nigh close to the games). While the story and characters are different, Itsuno’s supervision and the intention to capture the spirit of the games should be enough to place this under a category of “Adjacent Canon”.

Peak of Combat is a bit more complicated. Originally back in 2022 the game was considered a canon sequel to DMC 3, set years before Dante’s clash with Mundus. The game had several statements footage canonicity from both Capcom and Nebula Joy and Itsuno even supervised and promoted the game. That was the original Chinese beta version of the game though.

In 2023 the game went global with the English version of the game becoming its primary version. An official discord server was opened for the game with a Q/A mentioning the game was now set in an alternate timeline, and was potentially set between “DMC 3 and DMC 4”. It was no longer primary canon, which lined up with contradictions in lore due to the game’s story being rewritten from the ground up. Peak of Combat adopted an MCU multiverse approach to its characters, introducing alternative versions of the main cast to sell for its Gacha system.

As of 2025 the official discord server has a new Q/A mentioning the game is “an alternative story based on DMC” but still officially licensed by Capcom. Does this mean it is not canon? A moderator of the server clarified it more so means it’s a canon story in the DMC Multiverse, just not occuring in the “main universe“. This makes sense since the latest story in the game involves a Demon named Hellfilth bringing different versions of the cast across different timelines together… Including the DMC 5 cast. The recent expansion “Dante: Devil Within” (which came out 4 months after the discord q/a) has Hellfilth explore Dante’s memories, revealing the older version of him in the game is in fact the canon Dante from after the events of DMC 5 (full video). This is further shown with Nero, as his expansion has him pulled from the world (6 months after DMC 5 where DMC 5 occurs to fight Hellfilth alongside Dante, and he is shown to recall enemies like Bael from DMC 4. As it is, Peak of Combat is exploring the events Dante, Vergil and Nero deal with after DMC 5, while sprinkling in some multiverse shenanigans.  The reason DMC 5 iterations of our heroes show up in the mobile game is that a device called the Broken Gear sends V and other versions of the protagonists into different timelines to combat the Demon Hellfilth, who put the multiverse in danger (see below).

Is PoC Nero the Canon Nero?

Multiple timelines explicitly exist within Peak of Combat. For instance, the Dante followed in the main story of PoC is shown to be a post-DMC3 Dante, and yet is treated as a completely different version from his DMC5. We know this as the NPC hunter Lily travels across worlds via the Broken Gear and DMC5 Dante doesn’t recognize her and acts as if they’d just met despite being friends with DMC3 Dante in the main story. The Demon Lord Medea, who is freed in PoC Dante’s timeline in chapter 6 of the game, later appears as a major part of DMC4 Trish’s side story where she states outright she has been traveling across time to enact her revenge. Specific variants of some characters like Limitless Power Vergil describe alternate events to DMC and even the main events of PoC, stating this version of Vergil comes from a timeline where he has finally bested Dante in their final battle and has moved on into the Demon World in search of greater power. Another such world is the “Aberrant” timeline where animated versions of Dante & Vergil come from, acknowledged as its own separate space-time.

The world of Mega Man (or one very much like it) is apparently one such timeline in DMC’s multiverse when X and Sigma crossed over into DMC thanks to an unexpected dimensional rift, as part of an official collaboration between the two franchises. Even after the event is passed and Mega Man X isn’t currently summonable in-game, his Side Mission is apparently still around and counted with the rest of the canon Side Missions (likely because Dante, Nero, and Vergil return from the Greyworld at the very end here) suggesting X arriving into the world of PoC is canon. It also helps that NebulaJoy is behind both Peak of Combat and a publisher of Mega Man X DiVE, meaning the version of X that arrives in PoC is likely the X DiVE version of him.

As for Nero’s specific involvement in the story, it is twofold. Firstly, a version of DMC4 Nero appears at the big battle against the Hellfilth, though this version has no appearances outside this moment. DMC5 Nero later appears, pulled into the Hellfilth’s realm, and ends up being the one to defeat the Hellfilth. Nero essentially interrupts DMC5 Dante’s fight with the Hellfilth, tells him to back off as he takes on the Hellfilth by himself, and defeats it with Dante praising Nero for how quickly he did it. While obviously the Hellfilth wasn’t at its best fighting Nero, he’s ultimately the one who fights and defeats it. And of course he already scales to both DMC5 Dante and Vergil, who later treat one another as being the same individuals from their own timeline they already know during the PoC side stories. We know that the intention is that this is supposed to be the main Nero as we get the DMC5 calendar-style date & time telling us that Nero is coming from several months after DMC5, January 5th to 7th of the next year. He clearly has both of his arms in cutscenes and recognizes DMC5 Dante as his world’s Dante.

Hellfilth wrecks the Multiverse

Before we unpack this conundrum, we need to give a bit of context for a former enemy, the Beastheads from the second DMC novel. The Beastheads was a demon that took the form of a living statue, and it was made by Mundus. It had the power to absorb Human Soul and convert it into energy for Demons, but its abilities went far beyond this. The Beastheads had the power to alter reality, the very presence of the demon causing the laws of physics to go haywire across the world. The Beastheads’ range extends well beyond the universe, and into the totality of the known multiverse. It could send Dante to other universes, and even grant all knowledge from all dimensions to its host. The Beastheads’ reality warping effects are sustained by its power; if it were to be weakened or killed the warping would cease. The most clear example of this is when a storm it created dissipated after it was wounded by Dante.

Flash forward to Peak of Combat, and we meet the Demon Lord Hellfilth. Hellfilth is a Demon that resides in a dimension outside of all space and time, referred to as well as the Unknown Realm that exists between timelines. Hellfilth possesses dimensional abilities granting it access to all timelines. Using her power over space and time, Hellfilth has numerous statements of having “rearranged and wrecked” every timeline, explicitly disrupting every timeline, and setting the entire multiverse to collapse (which Dante, Vergil, & Yamato all sensed to be the case). It was also stated directly in the game. Originally it seemed Peak of Combat was going to have an alternate version of V use an item known as the Broken Gear and its control over time to fix the Multiverse, but the story was changed to have Dante and Nero (the Canon versions from after DMC 5) beat Hellfilth to near death, resulting in the collapse ending. This restored all the timelines and shows it was Hellfilth that sustained the collapse in the first place, rather than it being entirely a chain reaction. The Hellfilth explicitly does not die; Nero beats it until it runs away and Dante still states that they saved the day just from this alone, with the Hellfilth also complaining that they “ruined her entire show”. Dante states later that he and Nero saved the world.

Demons that have the range to affect the entire Multiverse like Hellfilth and the Beastheads seem to do so with their direct power, which makes sense given the Beastheads turning human souls into energy. Demons are already capable of affecting space and time with Demonic Energy, though at a limited range. Hellfilth would need to be outputting large amounts of energy to sustain the collapse, which then means her direct power scales to this due demonic energy tying into demon physicality. This would scale to DMC 5 Dante, Vergil and Nero all to Multiversal levels of power potentially.

And if you’re curious as to what the other playable characters get scaling-wise, DMC3 Lady singlehandedly defeats the Minotaur, a demon capable of resisting and fighting against the Demon King Plutone in a described “fierce” battle. DMC4 Trish defeats the Demon King Medea by herself, with Sparda in the past requiring assistance from a family of demon hunters to best her and her army, lore backing up that she was a Demon King in the area where Plutone frees her from, and she is usually treated as equal in standing to Plutone. V fights and defeats a Phantom that appears to be the same as the Phantom from Visions of V as it recalls and references those events, and later beats the demon Carus that turns into his Griffon. DMC3 Dante fights Plutone for an extended period but their battle is interrupted and cut short. DMC3 Vergil from that same timeline receives visions from the Broken Gear that he’s destined to lose in a fight against Plutone and only evades that fate by anticipating what Plutone was going to do from the visions he received, but they never get to fight for long before the fight is interrupted and they leave. This Vergil only ever ends up facing against a “Shadow of Plutone” that gets no comparison power-wise to the original.

In an Avengers-style scene, DMC5 Dante & Vergil, DMC3 Lady, DMC4 Trish & Nero, and V all join forces to defeat the Hellfilth and get it to retreat, later leading to the aforementioned fight DMC5 Nero has with it. While we aren’t totally sure of canon contribution to its defeat as we know that the Hellfilth considers DMC5 Dante to be the strongest Demon Hunter over Vergil so it’s not as if everyone is even in power, it’s still very important to note that this fight is unique in the game as it’s the only one to have multiple NPC characters out at once all fighting together against the boss. So you can go either way on all these characters downscaling from Hellfilth or not. There’s also noting that the Hellfilth itself is identified as a Demon King so you may be able to argue anyone who scales to a Demon King should already be relative to the Hellfilth. So, depending on what you buy for most of the cast, they scale to Low Multiversal to Multiversal from downscaling / defeating Demon Kings and whether or not you buy anyone else besides Dante and Vergil contributing meaningfully against the Hellfilth (V possibly being the weakest as, without Hellfilth scaling, he just repeats a feat he did in canon and fight mid-tier demons where as everyone else fights a Demon King / demons that compare to Demon Kings).

Oh and if you’re wondering how strong X is in the crossover story, he fights the Demon King Plutone on his way to face Sigma as he had been infected by the Sigma Virus (because apparently Reploids and Demons are physiologically/biologically similar), and Sigma himself is the big final boss of this side story, suggesting he’s meant to be stronger than Plutone. So you better watch out, Optimus Primal.

Again just to be clear, none of this impacted the verdict for Nero vs Hellboy. We just wanted to properly cover it in a DMC blog at last without the baggage (and maybe talk more in future DMC blogs too and have them properly ingrained in the blog itself). Please give both team Nero and team Hellboy all their dues please as we worked really hard to cover both with a refreshed look. Hope y’all enjoyed this blog because the team had a blast working on this!
