“A lot of life is dealing with your curse, dealing with the cards you were given that aren’t so nice. Does it make you into a monster, or can you temper it in some way, or accept it and go in some other direction?” –Wes Craven

Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen’s most cursed sorcerer.

Denji, the Chainsaw Man.

We humans often fear what we don’t understand and that fear often leads to catastrophic outcomes. The world of the supernatural is no stranger to this especially when monsters are made out of our own fear and malice. But fortunately for humanity, heroes risk their lives to protect the world of normal mankind from collapsing under the weight of the Supernatural. But today two of these heroes will face each other in a duel that will shatter the occult world everywhere. Will Yuji be able rise from the curse given to him and claim victory or will Denji send Yuji to hell and finally score! Only one way to find out….WITH A DEATH BATTLE!!!

Before We Start…

Obvious thing, massive spoilers for both Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man’s stories in their entirety. Analyzing both of these protagonists without looking past their anime adaptations would be downright impossible, so again, massive spoilers for both series. We cannot stress this enough. This fight is quite literally impossible to talk about without spoiling major things for both stories.

As for what’ll be covered, we’ll be looking at the original manga and anime for Jujutsu Kaisen, as well as its manga sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. The Phantom Parade mobile game will also be analyzed for supporting evidence and any useful additional lore. However, fan translations provided by TCBscans and Lightning following Chapter 133 of Jujutsu Kaisen will be prioritized over VIZ, as the official translation beginning at that point notably decreases in quality to the point of providing outright misinformation, as can be seen in this thread on Twitter.

For Chainsaw Man, it’s largely the same deal, with its manga and anime adaptation being the key focus. Additional novels for both series will also be analyzed. Nothing extra like Denji’s Dandadan cameo.

As a final note, while not required to experience before reading this blog, this blog does share multiple members and research notes with Danger Zone’s Yuji VS Denji. Due to the proximity between the blog’s release and episode’s announcement, many opinions here will be shared between it, and we highly suggest having the blog open on standby as it goes in great depth on nearly every aspect of the debate possible, and because of that, some parts of this blog are not as in-depth as they would be if not for that blog’s existence. This blog is obviously not a copy-paste of it however, but we do encourage keeping it as an open resource when referenced by this blog.

Yuji

“I can’t say what I’ll be thinking when I die, but I’m not gonna regret the way I lived!”

Itadori Yuji was your…relatively average high school student, while he may have broken a few Olympic world records by accident and beat up bullies in his freetime, he was able to live a normal enough life thanks to being raised by his grandfather Wasuke. On one fateful day however, Yuji went to visit his grandfather in the hospital, who inadvertently bestowed onto Yuji a dying curse while on his deathbed, that being to die surrounded by those he loves. Later that same day, Yuji had an encounter with one Megumi Fushiguro, who explained to Yuji that he’s searching for a cursed object that was speculated to be somewhere within Yuji’s school. As luck would have it, Yuji’s friends in the Occult Club had gotten their hands on the object, and unsealed it not knowing the consequences such an action would have. As Yuji & Megumi fought against the cursed spirits now plaguing the school, Yuji, in an act of desperation to save his friends chose to eat the cursed object to try and gain a boost in power, putting an end to his life as Itadori Yuji and instead now becoming nothing more than a puppet for the King of Curses…Ryomen Sukuna.

Or so Megumi thought, for as it turns out, Yuji somehow was able to retain control over his body. Due to this revelation, as well as Megumi’s desire to not let Yuji die and the timely intervention of the fashionably late Satoru Gojo, Yuji was spared and taken in by Jujutsu society, a society composed of, you guessed it, Jujutsu Sorcerers. However, this new lease on life was only temporary, as the higher-ups determined that once Yuji consumed all 20 of the cursed objects known as Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers, he would be put to death so that Sukuna would die along with him with no chance of coming back. As he thought back to his grandfather’s wish, Yuji accepted his inevitable execution and resolved himself as someone who would ensure that no person dies an unjust or unfair death, and was enrolled into Jujutsu High later that day for the purposes of becoming a Jujutsu sorcerer.

Throughout his journey to obtain the rest of Sukuna’s fingers, Yuji quickly formed bonds with various different Jujutsu sorcerers such as the rambunctious Nobara Kugisaki, the stern Kento Nanami, or the…let’s say eccentric Aoi Todo. However, this period of peace soon came to an end due to the machinations of the seemingly alive Suguru Geto, who led a group of Special Grade Curses in an effort to destroy Jujutsu society and seal away the strongest sorcerer of the modern day, Gojo. On October 31st, 2018, Geto set his trap and revealed himself to be the ancient sorcerer known as Kenjaku, before successfully sealing away Gojo and unleashing complete pandemonium on the streets of Shibuya. With Gojo now sealed, the balance between Sorcerers and Curses was completely upended, and as the night drew to a close, the bright-eyed boy new to the world of sorcery was broken by the near-endless tragedies he had endured, and chose to resolve himself not as a human, but as a weapon to be wielded for the sake of others.

After narrowly surviving his newly reinstated execution at the hands of Yuta Okkotsu, who spared Yuji’s life at the behest of Gojo, Yuji was able to reunite with the survivors of Shibuya and begin formulating ways to retrieve Gojo from the clutches of Kenjaku. They needed to act fast however, as it turned out that Kenjaku had orchestrated a Culling Game, pitting sorcerers against each other in a battle royale to the death with Megumi’s sister Tsumiki caught in the middle of it. Just as things had begun turning around however, tragedy struck yet again, as it was revealed that Tsumiki had been taken over by an ancient sorcerer known as Yorozu. In this moment of shock, Sukuna struck, taking over Yuji’s body momentarily with the express purpose of claiming Megumi as his new proper vessel. Yuji could only watch in horror as Sukuna successfully took over the body of his closest friend, and was unable to do anything to save Megumi due to his own weakness. However, not all hope was lost, as their efforts to unseal Gojo were successful, and with a month before the fated duel between the strongest of the modern day and the King of Curses, the group got to work planning for their final showdown in the ruins of Shinjuku.

Within the month they had, Yuji did whatever it takes to become strong enough to take on Sukuna and save Megumi, awakening new abilities within himself via rigorous training and a whole lot of cheating. But, as the day of the battle arrived, and Satoru Gojo fell, Yuji had no time to mourn the death of his teacher and instead chose to resolve himself for the final battle against Sukuna. Even with his training, and an awakening that granted Yuji his full potential, the strongest sorcerer in history still proved too much for Yuji and his allies. Just as things reached their lowest point however, Yuji’s cog mentality…dissipated, melted away by the flames of Sukuna’s rampage and the kindness shown to him by others. In that moment, Yuji regained his humanity, and activated the technique that serves as one’s ultimate expression of self, a Domain Expansion. Despite Yuji’s unsuccessful plea to Sukuna to return to his body, Yuji was able to successfully convince the broken Megumi to live, freeing him from Sukuna’s clutches and putting an end to the King of Curse’s reign of terror with one final punch. As things winded down and everyone mourned those they had lost, he remembered Gojo’s final request, that being to carry on his dream of fostering and ensuring the growth of the next generation.

Sadly, however, this dream eventually turned into one seemingly everlasting nightmare for Yuji. He not only bore the curse of being the strongest of his era, but also the curse of extended youth. Forced to watch his loved ones pass away before his very eyes, unable to join them in death out of an obligation to the weak he promised to protect, Yuji ran away in heartbreak and fear, abandoning Jujutsu Society. It was now up to the new generation to strengthen themselves, rather than relying on him to foster them. When alien refugees from the planet of Simuria arrived, Yuji finally made his presence known again, but only to clean things up after it was already seemingly too late for peace to ever truly be an option. However, a young refugee by the name of Maru asked to speak with Yuji, and revealed to him a plan that Yuji had long given up on; a plan to rid the world of Cursed Energy, and by extension, Curses. With Yuji’s help, Maru was able to successfully complete the Ritual of Harmony, healing those wounded in the conflict between Earth and the refugees, and ridding the world of something that had caused so much pain for so many centuries. After everything was said and done, Yuji fully returned to Jujutsu Society and reflected on the mistakes he had made. He now finally understood what Gojo wanted for him, and so Yuji decided to renew that promise and become the guiding light for those that would come after.

Denji

“Maybe I became a Devil Hunter for a really shallow reason, but I’m willing to die to keep living like this.”

Picture this. A world filled to the brim with demons of all sorts of origins, a population terrified with improper solutions in the form of Devil Hunters killing and dying by the dozen, and powerful people in all the wrong places to pull the strings in every way you would not want them to go. Now take all of that, pick it up, and you’ll find Denji in the slum that’s somehow worse than the stuff on top. A young teenage boy with no companion other than man’s best friend in devil form, Pochita. Ironically though, the duo was rather content with this. They could pull odd jobs to get their daily meal, and hang out with one another. Painfully simple yet beautifully enjoyable. Only for it to be ripped away by the world above that just refused to stop ruining lives. Denji was betrayed to the zombie devil by his creditor yakuza boss, Pochita and Denji were ripped to shreds… before Pochita made a pack with Denji. He gave himself up to be Denji’s heart, with the condition of their contract being that Denji would aim for the good, normal life he could never reach before. Following an explosion of blood and a sawed up horde of zombies hitting the ground, the devil hunter Makima found the revived Denji, born anew as a Devil Hybrid.

Following the incident, Denji was employed as an official devil hunter by Makima, working so he would be distinguished from the other devils that the organization attempts to slaughter. Part of her new special division alongside devil hunter Aki Hayakawa and blood fiend Power, he got to work on sawing up every sort of demon you could think of. The end goal was simple, just had to kill enough guys until the Gun Devil was one of them, and he would earn permanent enjoyment of the greatest feeling he had ever known up to now: Makima’s affection. Nothing Denji’s coo-coo crazy fighting style and one tracked mind couldn’t commit to. It’s not like he wasn’t impacted and didn’t react to the things around him of course. Vengeance obsessed yakuza grandson who’s anger towards Denji was the reason his heart still beat, the loveliest Jane Doe you could ever meet turned devilish Howitzer Impact victim, Santa Claus, all of these things left a mark on Denji and his friends in one way or another. But nothing could stick like his obsession for his end-goal of being Makima’s partner…

…is what he’d probably say. Truth was though, through the countless hell on earth scenarios he went through, he developed a strong bond with his friends… no, family. Aki and Power meant more to him than anyone could ever know, being parts of the great life Pochita had wanted for him that he didn’t even know he had reached. Unfortunately, Makima was the exception to that “anyone”. She ripped away the family Denji had gained and sent him to rock bottom, breaking his contract with Pochita and unleashing the true form of the Chainsaw Devil. Denji’s chainsaw heart had always been seen as a valuable target for his enemies, but the thought of it erupting into this was extraordinary. And so, the true form of the chainsaw devil battled the boss now revealed to be the Control Devil in a fight for keeping Pochita’s devil powers out of Makima’s hands. But through it all, defeat and escape, revelation and silence, Denji gained a new goal: simply, being the hero everyone saw his devil form as now. And so, Makima was defeated through clever planning, and Denji put his devil hunter job behind him. A new sister in the form of Makima’s reincarnation, Nayuta, a new position as a high school student, and the coolest afterschool hobby he could manifest: being Chainsaw Man!

Again, Denji had reattained the great life Pochita had wanted for him. But… Why stop there? If he could reach highs like this despite yesterday’s burdens and trials, why not shoot higher! He loved Chainsaw Man’s reputation and the adoration it brought, so he sought to get his secret identity “accidently” revealed to bring that adoration to Denji too. He stuck to his Chainsaw Man hype for a good while, running into more and more of the usual villains of the week… and an interesting girl by the name of Asa Mitaka. Something was different there, but thoughts for that can come later. New problem, apparently, Denji wasn’t allowed to be Chainsaw Man anymore by Public Safety’s devil hunters. If he ripped his chainsaw cord and went hero mode, it was going to be bye bye happy life and sayonara Nayuta. And so, things got, so, so, so, so, boring. Until, the world LITERALLY got lit on fire when the Chainsaw Church (long story) initiated its plan to have thousands of people turn into chainsaw monsters via a contract with the Fire Devil.

Thus faced with escalating circumstances, Denji pulled the cord, seemingly happy to get to be Chainsaw Man again. But from there, everything fell apart. A few incidents later and he was reunited with a deceased Nayuta, spiraling Pochita to awaken again. A battle with the War Devil and the Aging Devil later, Denji seemed to be put together again, but… how could he be? The world was one step away from being an apocalypse scenario, basically all his friends were dead or nowhere to be found, any dream of a normal life was basically kaput. But the one light in there was Asa Mitaka, his one current ally dealing with her very own clusterfuck nightmare. At the moment, she was the light, the single thing Denji could seem to be genuine around. A shame that the War Devil’s, Yoru’s, darkness made everything stay rotten. With a promise that defeating the Death Devil meant having sex? Denji relapsed.

Cut to the final battle. Denji and Pochita have now worked together to transform into Denji Man, a being with Denji’s brains and Pochita’s brawn. Yoru had attained unimaginable power, as the fear of war had skyrocketed to unbelievable heights. The two clashed, and in a twist of fate, Yoru lost because of her connection with Asa. Not wanting to hurt a bird that reminded Asa of the cliff she had fallen from that led to all this… but who cares about that? Denji wanted his sex with Yoru and he was going to get it! Hold on, you guys hear buzzing-

Denji awoke next to Pochita, who broke the news. One thing led to another, and now the world was to be consumed by bugs due to Death’s absence meaning endless repopulation. Everyone everywhere had lost, and so the only solution was a hard reset. Pochita bid his friend goodbye as he used his ability to erase things from existence through consumption, consuming himself. Denji had kept clawing forward for the things he wanted, never knowing when to stop. So, Pochita had to make him stop for him. And so, with one big bite…

Picture this. A world filled to the brim with demons of all sorts of origins, a population terrified with improper solutions in the form of Devil Hunters killing and dying by the dozen, and powerful people in all the wrong places to pull the strings in every way you would not want them to go. Amongst the average citizen runs around the devil hunter Denji, friends with the blood fiend and employee of Public Safety’s devil hunter force. A simple boring life, and dangerous given how the world was built, but a perfectly average one relatively speaking. But it is one that can be respected by the people he saves, such as this high school girl named Asa. So as this chainsaw wielding man heads into battle, a plain look on his face, a lack of a story to tell, the only thing one can think to tell him is probably just thank you. But hey, that gets the heart going. So maybe it’s enough.

Experience & Skill

Yuji

Yuji could never have imagined that he would be at the frontlines of a war between sorcerer and curse but despite the odd circumstances, he held his ground and somehow managed to adapt to it all. It turns out that a guy like Yuji has natural talent when it comes to sorcery as he could do the impossible in such a short time period. For example, Black Flash is an exceptionally difficult technique for even skilled sorcerers to pull off but Yuji managed to string together four consecutive Black Flashes only weeks after he enrolled into Jujutsu High. With how well Yuji could adapt to an entirely new power system, the most talented of sorcerers believed that he was already up there with other talented students like Yuta Okkotsu and Kinji Hakari. This isn’t mentioning all the extra training that he got from his teacher Satoru Gojo as Gojo believed that he had the potential to become an extraordinary sorcerer. This secret training, along with a greater understanding of Cursed Energy thanks to Kento Nanami, eventually culminated at the Goodwill Event as the school’s competition was interrupted by the Disaster Curses’ intervention.

Prior to all of this, Yuji was quite literally a regular guy that had no experience with either side. Well, “regular” is a generous way to put it when he naturally has abnormal strength, a tendency to fight bullies which granted him the title of “Tiger of West Junior High”, and the ability to hold off a curse on first-encounter despite lacking any Cursed Energy, but that is all besides the point. He had never truly taken advantage of his physicality until he had begun fighting curses but it went a long way in helping him fight off dangerous special grade curses such as Finger Bearers and disaster curses such as Hanami and Mahito. At the same time, he also fought experienced sorcerers like Choso, Yuta, Higuruma, and even sorcerers as experienced as Sukuna. His success in fights often boils down to his up-close fighting style as he is especially accustomed to throwing hands. Not only has his grandfather taught him karate but Yuji somehow knows the ways of ancient martial arts that lets him use techniques like Knee Release, a move that eliminates starting movement to better guide his own attacks.

Having said all that, Yuji’s own growth as a sorcerer slowed down a bit due to how shaken up Jujutsu society was after the events of the Shibuya Incident. In the month leading up to Gojo and Sukuna’s clash however, every sorcerer had to prepare themselves for Sukuna if he somehow managed to beat Gojo. Yuji used this time to sharpen his own capabilities and harness new techniques like Choso’s Blood Manipulation and Sukuna’s Shrine technique, the latter of which was still pretty new to him by the final fight, but nonetheless his own persistence and assistance from other sorcerers ultimately netted him that final blow on Sukuna. Cut to seven decades later and he is practically a master at every technique that he failed to fully capture at the Shinjuku showdown. Luck-based Black Flashes can now be done on command, his Blood Manipulation has become far more precise, and Yuji’s usage of Shrine could easily deal with the likes of a newly reformed Mahito while also no-selling a point blank attack from him. In the present day, Yuji’s practically become a legend in Jujutsu history and has easily surpassed Gojo as the strongest sorcerer of all time, making all of Gojo’s efforts worth it in the end.

Denji

Even before becoming Chainsaw Man, Denji was already a devil hunter for the Yakuza in order to pay off his debts, alongside little Pochita. Pochita had already been feared for decades at the least, having killed and eaten other Devils long before the story began. Joining the Public Safety team was when he really upgraded his training though. Through Kishibe’s training regimen of forcing Denji and Power to continuously fight and die, Denji gained further knowledge of his own limits and abilities, alongside performing an ambush against Kishibe by properly using his brain rather than brawn, with Kishibe eventually considering them ready for proper combat. While he does rely on his Devil strength, he’s shown to be extremely competent at raw hand-to-hand, managing to take out an entire crowd of bat-wielding assailants in his human form with his bare hands. By following Kishibe’s advice of tricking foes into dropping their guard, he is able to slice Samurai Sword in half.

In line with his past as a kid struggling for survival on the harsh streets of Japan, Denji’s fighting style is chaotic and unpredictable for opponents, yet surprisingly strategic. He’s unafraid to fight dirty, formulated a plan to defeat the Eternity Devil by continuously slicing it and drinking its blood until it wanted to die from the pain, and set himself on fire to counter Santa Claus’ healing via darkness. He also is excellent at using his knowledge of those around him to his advantage in general, such as when he exploited Reze being unable to produce explosions underwater, immediately figured out that the House Devil’s “eyes” were its weak spots based on the fact the front door was its mouth, and taking advantage of the wording of Yoru’s contract by making her injure herself.

There’s a reason he’s called the Chainsaw Man though. You can’t talk about Denji without mentioning his Chainsaw Devil partner in crime, Pochita! As mentioned before, Pochita already has loads of combat experience in Hell, earning the title of the Devil that Devils fear the most. Famously, he fought the Four Horsemen of Control, War, Famine, and Death. Additionally, he is not as much of a mindless killing machine as he may seem, similarly to his host. He is just as willing to perform insane moves in order to gain an advantage against the opponent, the most notable example of this being when he threw his heart across Japan to reach the Aging Devil in order to allow Denji to get up close and personal with him. This isn’t even the only time he’s used this sort of technique creatively, as when Makima launched him into space, he launched his heart towards the Earth and reformed his body as it was burning in re-entry.

Together, Denji and Pochita make quite the team. They worked together in order to vomit out Yoshida, with Pochita knowing he’d be useful to help defeat the Aging Devil. Denji literally devoured the innards of Tree-People inside the Aging World, all so that Pochita could regenerate in the real world due to his stomach technically not being in the Aging World and thus bypassing its limits. Most importantly, they defeated Makima by using Pochita as a decoy to let her guard down so Denji could sneak attack her. Due to his correct hunch Makima wouldn’t be able to remember his scent due to her never being truly interested in him, he was able to perform his plan of eating Makima in order to bypass her immortality, an act of love rather than an attack. Perhaps what was keeping them going was Pochita’s love for poor Denji, as he concluded their journey himself by coming to the conclusion eating his own heart was the only way to save Denji’s soul.

Also, contrary to popular belief, he is good at counting and would beat Yuji’s ass in that Math quiz

Equipment

Yuji

Gauntlets

A pair of gauntlets that Yuji wore during the final battle against Sukuna in Shinjuku. Durable, but doesn’t serve any special purpose as it only existed to hide Yuji’s missing finger from Sukuna for the sorcerers’ plan against him to work.

Slaughter Demon

A knife that Gojo borrowed from Maki to have Yuji use in his first few missions as a sorcerer. It held its own against some lower level curses… until Yuji got set up against a Special Grade and it shattered instantly.

Oh well. At least it only costs 800 V-Bucks.

Denji

Devil Hunter Uniform

A simple suit and tie Denji wore during the events of Part 1. It is more fortified to offer some extra protection, enough to allow regular humans like Aki survive powerful strikes from the hybrid Samurai Sword, but it’s not really that notable considering Denji hardly even wears it to begin with.

Chainsaw

A standard chainsaw. Nothing really fancy with this Chainsaw compared to the Man wielding it.

Axe

A basic axe fit for chopping down devils.

Power’s Blood Chainsaw

A special chainsaw made from Power’s blood, said blood will fester once inside a person and continually cause damage as long as the blood remains, hampering regeneration even as potent as Makima’s, which Denji used to his advantage to finally finish her off.

Unfortunately, this isn’t seen again in the rest of the series until the timeline reset.

Devil Pawns

Given to him by Lil’ D, Denji has access to various shrunken down devils. These serve as a bonus blood supply if he ever needs to heal, and by consuming them with his existence erasure abilities (more on this later), Denji can erase the concept the devil embodies. We saw him erase the concepts of teeth and legs through this, though it is worth noting he both doesn’t know which devils he’s eating, and that the conceptual erasure applies to him too (for instance, erasing legs means he also doesn’t have legs anymore). Thus the strategy tied to these pawns is rather risky.

Abilities

Sorcerer Physiology

Within Jujutsu Kaisen, there exist select individuals known as Jujutsu Sorcerers, people who are capable of controlling a special type of energy known as Cursed Energy. This ability to control Cursed Energy is incredibly unique among humans, and results in Sorcerers having a unique physiology compared to that of your average person. All sorcerers fundamentally have different brains to those of regular people, and it is thanks to this unique wiring that they are able to see invisible Cursed Spirits, resist the physical and mental degradation that Cursed Energy causes, and weaponize Cursed Energy in endlessly different ways.

Furthermore, all beings in Jujutsu Kaisen share a unique interpolation between the soul and the body, with the body being the soul and vice versa. Due to this, any damage or changes to one’s soul will affect the body, although the reverse is not true in regards to damage to one’s body damaging their soul. While the reason for this interpolation is unknown, a likely candidate is that of something known as an Innate Domain, a fundamental part of one’s existence in Jujutsu Kaisen that is said to be “the embodiment of one’s heart” that results in the body becoming a Domain in and of itself. Thanks to this interaction between the body, soul, and heart, it is impossible for attacks to manifest inside one’s body without some sort of entry point, similar to how a Domain Expansion’s barrier can protect itself from outside attacks.

Vessel Physiology

Compared to every other human in his world, Yuji is special even amongst Jujutsu society due to the circumstances of his birth. You see, Kenjaku’s plan with Yuji was to turn him into a vessel that could carry the same potential as the King of Curses himself, Sukuna. Due to the fact that Sukuna had been residing in him since birth which forced both Sukuna’s and Yuji’s soul to reside in the same body, Yuji has become one of few characters in the series who can actually perceive the soul. After getting a better understanding of the soul through Yuki Tsukumo’s book, Yuji can now apply his abilities down to the level of one’s own soul. Attacking his opponent’s soul, healing his own soul with RCT, and severing soul-based connections within a singular body are all ways in which Yuji can use his knowledge on souls to his advantage.

Alongside this, Yuji gained a high poison resistance while he was Sukuna’s vessel, letting him shrug off their effects despite still feeling the pain of them, and he also gained the capability to eat cursed objects and adapt their properties without needing to relinquish control over his body. The most notable of these cases is when he consumed the remaining Death Painting Wombs and adapted their poisonous blood, their pseudo-immortality, and even the capability to use Blood Manipulation like his half-brother Choso.

Binding Vows

In order to be successful as a Jujutsu sorcerer, one must come to understand the power of Binding Vows. It is an absolute necessity for a sorcerer to learn these vows as these are essentially contracts that are either self-applicable or applicable to others. The way in which Binding Vows are created have only been vagueposted but the effect of said vow depends on how much a user is willing to give up to get their part of the deal. It is also possible for Yuji to make a Binding Vow unconsciously like how Miwa accidentally did, empowering her attack in exchange for the inability to swing a sword for the rest of her life. Plenty of Binding Vows have been seen throughout Jujutsu Kaisen but it’s hard to say if Yuji had ever learned any other Binding Vow besides the more basic ones and a certain other vow, even by the time of Modulo.

The most common of all these Binding Vows is the simple act of “revealing one’s hand”. The user reveals information to the opponent, whether that’d be their Cursed Techniques or their fighting styles, in order to enhance the power of their own techniques. It’s a fairly simple trade-off but it can be used to mislead an opponent as specific information can be shared to throw them off and trick them into having the wrong idea of their technique. If a Binding Vow is ever broken, the consequences that come forth will vary depending on its type. If it was just a self-applicable vow, then the greatest consequence would just be losing the bonus power boost. If the vow was made with another person however, the consequences are apparently great enough to where master sorcerers like Kenjaku steer away from breaking those vows despite the general lack of knowledge in that area.

The only Binding Vow that Yuji has used was a vow that limited his Dismantle’s range, only targeting the barrier between souls. In exchange, that attack gains a massive strength boost. The Binding Vow didn’t permanently stay after Yuji used it on Sukuna, especially given how Dismantles in Modulo are back to their normal versions, but Yuji’s greater experience as a sorcerer does mean that it is likely for him to use a Binding Vow in battle if he needs to.

Cursed Energy

In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, a special kind of spiritual energy known as Cursed Energy forms whenever humans feel any sort of negative emotion such as jealousy, envy, rage, etc. Every human will possess at least a faint amount of Cursed Energy but only a select few will be able to control it. For some reason, Cursed Energy is mainly exclusive to Japan but regardless of regional limitations, those who can actively control those Cursed Energy are known across Jujutsu society as sorcerers. Without any training in sorcery, Cursed Energy becomes a dangerous force to come into contact with as untrained people can find themselves harmed and even cursed with enough exposure to it, the latter of which can mentally and physically erode a person to death. One needs a strong sense of control over their emotions to consistently use and control it but once they do, that Cursed Energy can then be manipulated and weaponized to physically reinforce one’s body, damage intangible spirits known as Cursed Spirits, and grant people abilities known as Cursed Techniques.

The ways in which a sorcerer uses Cursed Energy boils down to how much Cursed Energy they output at a given moment, how much Cursed Energy they have stored in their reserves, and how skilled a sorcerer is in manipulating their Cursed Energy. A great enough control over Cursed Energy reinforces a sorcerer’s body to the point of letting them survive attacks that send them flying through multiple buildings or letting them withstand the force of nukes made of what is essentially imaginary mass.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Due to the fact that Cursed Energy is created through negative emotions, it is inherently negative by nature. However, what if you multiplied a negative by a negative? Well, multiplying Cursed Energy onto itself will convert that Cursed Energy into positive energy, and that positive energy is what has to be used to activate the Reverse Cursed Technique (or RCT for short). Even though this technique is far too complex for most sorcerers to achieve, its purpose is contrastingly simple. On activation, that positive energy will flow into the user’s body and heal them of any damage that they happen to take during combat. Whether it is blood, bones, organs, or entire limbs that have been sliced clean off, RCT is able to revert a person’s body back to their peak.

Granted, RCT does have some pretty big drawbacks that doesn’t make it an ideal technique to use in most cases. Damage to the sorcerer’s brain can greatly slow down or prevent the healing altogether as RCT is constantly maintained within the brain, so if an attack is fast enough to take advantage of this, then they’re cooked. The speed and healing ability of RCT is also dependent on a sorcerer’s own output of Cursed Energy as well as how much Cursed Energy they have left, the latter of which can be detrimental when RCT requires a massive amount of Cursed Energy to convert that Cursed Energy into positive energy as well as restore that body from nothing.

As for Yuji’s own usage of RCT, he harnessed it through his training with Yuta but he gained a leg up on other sorcerers’ usage of RCT due to his unique Death Painting Womb physiology. Because of how his body is structured, Yuji can not only expend very little or almost no Cursed Energy when he uses RCT but it and the combination of his Blood Manipulation can simply let him reattach and heal limbs whenever he wishes. In the three chapters where Yuji was consistently fighting Sukuna, RCT allowed him to quickly heal many fatal wounds from Sukuna that should have put him down, all of which occur in surprisingly short timeframes. By the time we get to Modulo, Yuji’s RCT should likely be as effective as Gojo’s RCT which could continuously heal through the dust-reducing effects of Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine.

New Shadow Style: Simple Domain

A technique in which a small barrier is cast around a sorcerer in order to protect them from the guaranteed attacks of an enemy’s Domain Expansion. With this protection, a sorcerer can give themselves enough time to fight back against the one who casted the Domain Expansion. It was an ability that was developed around the time of the Heian era so that people could be safe from evil curses and curse users. When Yuji used it, he only cast it to survive within Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine. A simple domain does usually have other applications beyond this, however. It’d be difficult to say that Yuji can use the simple domain for other means as we never see him do so and the simple domain generally may not be useful against anyone that isn’t from the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Divergent Fist

Yuji’s personal technique that he unintentionally developed when he first became a sorcerer. Due to Yuji’s unique strength and speed, his Cursed Energy lags behind his attacks, resulting in an effective two-in-one attack where Yuji’s punch lands first before the Cursed Energy does. This was previously Yuji’s only technique prior to the Goodwill Event as his understanding of Cursed Energy was poor, however Todo trained Yuji to be able to strike at the moment of impact. For a while, it seemed that this technique became dead in the water, however Yuji began utilizing this technique as a way to confuse his enemies, most notably against Mahito and Sukuna, which was crucial to the latter’s ultimate defeat.

Black Flash

In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, a strange phenomena occurs when a sorcerer manages to sync their own physical prowess and their flow of Cursed Energy near perfectly. In the microsecond that a sorcerer lands a punch on an opponent while also applying their own Cursed Energy, space itself will distort as the user’s Cursed Energy flashes back and multiplies the power of their attack to the power of 2.5. The Black Flash is a technique that is very well known among Jujutsu society but no regular sorcerer can easily replicate the attack at will. For reference, a microsecond is quite literally a millionth of a second, or 0.000001 second, and that isn’t even considering the fact that luck has to favor the sorcerer for the attack to work. You can’t master the technique as it’s likely that the Black Flash is dependent on outside factors such as your own temperature, your physical condition, or even the air’s humidity at that moment in time. If the move were purely based on timing then a master sorcerer like Gojo could just easily replicate it at will whenever he wished.

Once a sorcerer lands a Black Flash, they will enter a sort of “zone state” that will let them draw out 120% of their potential. Cursed Energy becomes as easy to use as breathing and if a sorcerer were to land at least 2 consecutive Black Flashes, then said sorcerer can restore the reserves of their Reverse Cursed Technique if it’s been depleted prior. Even with the randomness of Black Flash, Yuji is noted to be a master at the technique, securing the record on both the number of consecutive Black Flashes at once as well as the number of Black Flashes in history. Experienced characters like Mahito and Sukuna were even led to believe that Yuji could somehow do Black Flashes at will. Perhaps this was foreshadowing for the fact that his mastery of Black Flash decades later let him outright ignore that luck factor and actually perform Black Flashes at will, doing so to the point of knowing exactly when a Black Flash will land.

Cursed Technique: Blood Manipulation

Arguably one of the most versatile cursed techniques to have ever been shown in Jujutsu Kaisen. As the name suggests, this technique lets Yuji have full control over his own supply of blood. It was passed down to him due to his hereditary connections with the Kamo Clan and once Choso taught him its ways, Yuji could use it to his full potential. His consumption of those remaining Death Painting Wombs let Yuji benefit from them in a strange but very useful way. Rather than rely on purely his own blood supply, the Death Paintings can turn Yuji’s cursed energy supply into blood for him to control, creating an endless supply to pull from as long as there is enough Cursed Energy in Yuji’s tank. Since Yuji’s blood also turned extremely poisonous due to his physiology, mixing his blood with anyone else’s blood, even those of powerful sorcerers like Uraume, can greatly weaken them with just a few moments of contact. Yuji’s Blood Manipulation may have not been completely refined during the events of Jujutsu Kaisen but once the events of Modulo roll around, Yuji has practically become a master at the technique. Due to this, it’s safe to say that he can easily utilize every application of the technique that we’ve seen throughout Jujutsu Kaisen. Choso confirmed Yuji would eventually surpass him in skill, and Choso was able to apply aspects of his brother’s techniques to his blood manipulation.

With complete blood manipulation, the sky’s the limit in terms of its uses in battle. Need a weapon or shield? Create one at will with blood. Need to restrict your enemy’s movements? Throw blood at their legs and harden it to fully stop their momentum. Need to blind a foe? Spit blood in their eye and detonate it in their face. Hardening blood to create armor, raising parts of the environment, creating miniature blood bombs to dash through the air, detaching limbs to attack from afar just to then reattach it instantly, summoning giant waves of blood to fill up highway tunnels, etc. With Flowing Red Scale, Yuji can strengthen his abilities further through the increase of his temperature, pulse, and red blood cell production, pushing his body to his absolute limit… but why follow a limit when you can go beyond that? The advanced form of Flowing Red Scale, known as “Flowing Red Scale: Stack” will focus that effect onto specific parts of his body such as his eyes to improve his vision and reaction speeds. The ultimate application of Blood Manipulation would have to be Convergence, however as it compresses blood to its ultimate limit, letting Yuji access the most dangerous techniques.

With Supernova, a handful of extremely compressed blood balls can take opponents off guard and blow up like landmines. The more iconic of the two though would have to be Piercing Blood, a move honed through Choso’s hands to create a fast and precise laser of blood that can deal an immense amount of damage to opponents. It’s a move that is usually fastest at its start as it can quickly lose speed the further the distance it goes, at least with Choso’s application. By the time of Modulo, Yuji is proficient enough with his version of Piercing Blood that it just outright disproves Kenjaku’s point altogether. Not only can Yuji split his Piercing Blood technique into multiple arrows that can precisely hone in on separate targets, but those arrows never lose their speed. With how casually Yuji performs such a feat while clearing out an entire building’s worth of sorcerers, big brother Choso must only be proud of Yuji’s accomplishments.

Shrine

The Shrine technique hails from none other than Ryomen Sukuna himself. At its core, it is a Cursed Technique that slices and dices anything that the user makes a slicing motion towards. As long as the user is physically strong enough to deal damage to whatever they’re slicing, they can basically cut anything through the firing of invisible slashes. Yuji managed to access this technique by the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, mainly through his weird physiology, heritage, and the awakening of his true power, but just like Blood Manipulation, he wasn’t exactly the best at using it due to the freshness of said technique. The lack of proficiency only let him slice anything upon making contact with it, but once we get to Modulo, it’s clear that Yuji has completely refined his usage of Shrine and uses it like a pro now. He should just be able to replicate every previous use of Shrine throughout all of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Shrine isn’t just a slicing technique, but rather it consists of two separate means of slicing: Dismantle and Cleave. Dismantle is the first half of Shrine and is generally the standard version of the technique, only being able to target and slice anything that lacks Cursed Energy. Whether that is man-made structures like city environments or people with Heavenly Restrictions like Toji, these slashes usually come in the form of projectiles that can be fired with hand signs and have their trajectories altered through the same means. It does seem like the hand signs aren’t necessary if a user is proficient enough with Dismantle but these are still extremely dangerous to sorcerers due to their invisibility and how many can be rapid-fired at once with just a single hand sign. Cleave meanwhile is the second half of Shrine that solely slices anything with Cursed Energy, only landing on an opponent if the user makes direct contact (unless it’s used in a Domain Expansion). Cleave is special in how it can be adjusted to better slice foes based on their Cursed Energy levels and their own physical toughness, allowing it to basically kill targets through a single attack. Through further extensions, Cleave can be used to create web-like slices that can target the surrounding area or Shrine as a whole can coat users in precise slashes to let them block damage from incoming sharp blades and axes.

In terms of unique applications, Yuji has created and used his own version of Dismantle that Sukuna could never do himself: Soul Dismantles. Through his innate ability to target souls alongside his usage of Shrine, Yuji’s Dismantles could now directly attack souls and force apart the boundary that was between Sukuna’s and Megumi’s soul when Sukuna had taken control of the fraud. It likely works beyond the boundary between multiple souls since Yuji could easily damage Mahito’s soul prior but Yuji does still need to physically come into contact to deal direct soul damage. Of course, this limitation won’t matter in a Domain Expansion as Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration also similarly removed the physical contact limit of his Cursed Technique but it is still a notable hindrance regardless.

Domain Expansion

Every top-tier sorcerer’s gotta have one of these. The Domain Expansion is a technique so advanced that most sorcerers only dream of attaining it. As mentioned prior, every person in the Jujutsu Kaisen world has an Innate Domain within them. This metaphysical space usually embodies an individual and serves as the basis for one’s cursed technique. Once you apply advanced barrier techniques to let that Innate Domain extend outside of the body via cursed energy, a physical space (usually surrounded by a sphere) is created to then imbue the barriers of said domain with the sorcerer’s own cursed technique. If all of this is pulled off without a hitch, then a Domain Expansion will successfully occur.

If an opponent is caught inside the Domain Expansion’s barrier, then the sorcerer who cast it is free to land a guaranteed-hit effect on their opponent. Said effect applies to every cursed technique activation that occurs within the barrier, even if the caster previously had restrictions that prevented them from doing so prior such as the requirement to come into physical contact. The caster also gains a great buff to their stats in the process, making it very difficult for a sorcerer to overcome their assault. That said, a Domain Expansion does have its own flaws such as a large amount of Cursed Energy being required to activate the technique (it doesn’t seem like Yuji struggles with this as of Modulo), temporarily leaving the caster vulnerable by burning out their Cursed Technique, the barrier of said Domain ceasing function if an opponent is strong enough to break out, and the fact that someone can dodge the initial casting of the Domain Expansion if they’re fast enough. Usually, it’s possible for caught sorcerers to also survive in the Domain by using Anti-Domain abilities, albeit it’s only delaying the inevitable usually.

Having said all that… what is Yuji’s Domain Expansion? Surely the story tells us what it does- oh. Even months after both Jujutsu Kaisen and Modulo have ended, we still don’t know the effects of Yuji’s Domain or even the name of it. He undoubtedly gained his own Domain Expansion by the end of the story as it is what led to Sukuna’s ultimate demise but we can only go off of narrative clues for Yuji’s Domain. Said technique should share similar traits such as a stat boost and guaranteed-hit effects that allowed Yuji to land his applications of Shrine on Sukuna but oddly enough, an opponent trapped within the domain will also be forced to go down memory lane while finding themselves unable to fight back. It’s, of course, never stated if this is an actual effect of the Domain Expansion but Sukuna theorizes such a possibility and both Yuji and Sukuna peacefully talk things out as they walk through Yuji’s hometown. Given that they only fight again once Sukuna swears that he won’t surrender, it is very likely that both Yuji and Sukuna are forced to indulge in non-violence while the Domain is up. If Yuji chooses to deactivate the Domain if the opponent refuses to surrender, then that’s when he’ll be able to attack, all while maintaining those same Domain buffs. Given how both Yuji and Sukuna reverted to their previous selves within the Domain, it’s likely that those effects are spiritual in nature as they revert back to their usual selves once Yuji drops the Domain.

Denji

Devil Hybrid Physiology

In the world of Chainsaw Man, humans are forced to coexist alongside Devils, beings who originate from Hell to wreak havoc among humanity. While all humans can naturally make deals with said Devils to draw upon their power, Denji is a… unique case. On the brink of death, Pochita made a contract with him to fuse with his body and become his heart in exchange for Denji to show him his dreams. This turned Denji into something whose name was erased from existence, but is commonly referred to as a hybrid; a fusion between human and Devil, giving him access to Pochita’s powers while still maintaining his full humanity.

By pulling on his cord, Denji can transform into Chainsaw Man! (Roll credits.) Transforming will usually heal up any injuries he’s sustained and bring him back to life, though if he’s low on blood, pulling his cord will still heal him but won’t turn him into Chainsaw Man, and his chainsaws can even retract on their own if he gets too low. He also can’t pull his own cord once he’s dead, but he can circumvent this by pulling on his cord before a big attack to instantly bring himself back. It also appears that being low on blood will weaken a Devil and make them far more vulnerable to being hurt by attacks, namely with showings like Denji becoming too weak to even lift a net off of himself and getting repeatedly stabbed by regular humans due to losing so much blood when fighting other Hybrids.

Once he’s a Devil, Denji gains many of the attributes of standard Devils and then some. For starters, Devils in general draw their strength from fear; the more widespread and recognizable the fear is, the stronger the Devil tied to that fear becomes. Becoming more feared amplifies all attributes of a Devil, be it their physical strength, speed, and even their abilities. However, the same also applies in the opposite direction, as becoming less feared will drastically diminish a Devil’s capabilities. While the biggest power boosts we’ve seen mainly stem from massive shifts in public perceptions, Devils can get noticeably stronger from the fear of just a few people. Kishibe, a very experienced Devil Hunter, explained how the best Devil Hunters are the ones with a couple of screws loose, as “sane” Devil Hunters are far more prone to becoming afraid of a Devil (for understandable reasons) and thus making it stronger. This was perfectly demonstrated during his encounter with the Eternity Devil, who rapidly grew in strength and control over the hotel due to Kobeni and Arai’s fear at that moment.

Beyond their power source, Devils also share incredibly keen senses. They can typically use their sense of smell to detect specific individuals from fairly far away, with Makima’s being able to identify the fact Denji and Pochita had fused. Makima’s sense of sight was adept enough to spot the Gun Devil from 500 kilometers away, and their hearing is nothing to scoff at either. Power could hear Denji from outside a soundproof room, and Pochita is iconic for being able to hear Devils from across Hell calling for help, in one instance even hearing Kobeni whispering for help from an entirely separate part of the city despite the person next to her struggling to hear her. These senses are so extreme that they’ve allowed him to detect and block Yoru’s Invisible Bang projectiles (something replicated by a fake Chainsaw Man too) and know of the Aging Devil’s exact location despite being kilometers away. It’s essentially impossible to hide from the guy!

Finally, Devils and Hybrids also display some esoteric attributes, like being able to interact with and damage the Ghost Devil, who is shown to be conventionally intangible and could only be harmed by Aki through a sword specifically made to hit intangible ghosts. Denji’s mouth can also extend to fit entire humans inside… ew.

Devil Regeneration/Immortality & Cloning

Another ability that most Devils have is their regeneration. That’s right they got a healing factor like good ol’ Wolverine from the X-Men except it might be better. Though Denji’s skeletal structure and muscles are the same as normal humans, Devils can regenerate from practically anything via blood. Lost Limbs, brain damage, bisection, or straight up their entire body from the neck down. Any damage you name Devils can heal from with ease. Even with just a single drop of blood, Pochita was able to completely reattach all the pieces of Denji’s body despite him being chopped into pieces (pictured above). What makes Denji stand out is that unlike regular Devils, even if he’s in a state most would consider “dead” all it takes is a little bit of blood and he’ll be good as new. Denji was able to come back from being “killed” by the Curse Devil just by revving his own engine, and Asa believes he would be able to easily return to life even from the effects of the Death Devil, which could cause every human on Earth to instantly die. Denji can return from death as long as his heart is intact and he can pull his own cord.

While Devils usually drink blood (you know, with their mouths), it has been shown that they can also absorb blood directly through their bodies, shown with Reze regenerating her leg after being covered in Typhoon’s blood and the Buddy Stories novel describing Denji’s body passively absorbing blood on the ground to heal his injuries. And it’s not just the fact their regeneration helps with healing damage, it also gives them an endless amount of stamina. Denji was able to battle against the Eternity Devil for 3 days straight with no sleep. This means Devils can basically fight indefinitely, as long as they have a source of blood of course. Even without a source of blood, his healing is fast enough to allow him to reattach his head after it got cut off or constantly regenerate the lower half of his body despite being repeatedly blown up (he was noted to be low on blood in the latter instance, which makes it more impressive).

The most unique attribute of Denji’s regeneration comes from his contract with Pochita. Since Pochita became his heart, and Denji’s healing is tied to it, he can simply regenerate his entire body from his heart alone, which allows for some very extreme applications. For instance, when Pochita got launched into space, he could simply remove his heart and throw it back down to Earth, reforming his body during re-entry to return. He can also use this to close the gap with opponents trying to zone him out, which he did against the Aging Devil to regenerate right next to him. This is something Denji himself can do in his base form, as he created a clone of himself from his heart capable of speaking and fighting an entire team of Hybrids and Makima herself, fooling her into letting her guard down. Denji simply refuses to stay down no matter what he’s put through!

Chainsaws!!!

He is the Chainsaw Man. So naturally Denji has the power to create or retract Chainsaws on any surface of his body, be it for surprise attacks or wall-running! If he’s been completely disarmed (literally), they also work great as an option to keep fighting. These chainsaws are incredibly effective at cutting devils in half. Denji can easily sever limbs and bifurcate his enemies, and with a little effort put into them, they have a surprisingly big area of effect displayed in the Typhoon Devil fight. Other hybrids like Samurai Sword could slice large gashes into a building through sheer air pressure, showing this is pretty consistent. They are also effective at cutting other materials like stone and iron. Just like the rest of his body these Chainsaws can be regenerated. Shop Smart, Shop S-Mart!

Denji doesn’t need to just create chainsaws however, as he can also create chains by themselves for even more versatility. While Beam comments that the Chainsaw Man used his chains to swing from building to building like the iconic superhero Izuku Midoriya, Denji prefers to use his in other ways. He can restrain targets, drag himself to them, drag them towards himself, pick up and throw entire pieces of land or other objects, launch surprise attacks, weaponize them into whips to extend his limbs and block attacks, reattach parts of his body mid-combat, or turn them into reins. They also have incredible range, with Pochita pulling Makima and three other Hybrids from ground level to far up into the sky before they could react, requiring a range of at least 132 meters.

Existence Erasure

Devils are not just supernatural monsters, They are entities that embody a concept. How is this relevant information? Well, as it turns out, the reason why the Chainsaw Devil is so special is due to its ability to erase concepts from existence. You see, anytime the Chainsaw Devil consumes another devil, it is wiped from reality across the past and present with no one remembering that concept (except for a few special Devils). This includes the concepts of wars, diseases, natural disasters, nuclear weapons, human senses, the light of a specific star, and even four other possible conclusions besides death that a living being can experience at the end of their life span. It is all stuff that used to exist in the world of Chainsaw Man which was erased by the Chainsaw Man.

A very notable example of this is when Pochita ate the Ear Devil, causing all living creatures to lose their ears and not only forget what they were, but even retroactively change the rules of reality, allowing people to still have the ability to hear and communicate verbally despite this being physically impossible and make it so human society itself changed to accommodate a lack of ears (such as ear picks now being sold as an arts-and-crafts product). The Devils that Pochita eats are still around somewhere in his stomach and can be vomited out, allowing the concepts to return to the universe; this even works on an interdimensional scale, as Pochita’s eating (and Denji’s subsequent puking) of the Snow Devil affected entirely separate dimensions like Aging’s world.

Telepathy

While Pochita and Yoru were fighting, Denji and Asa were somehow capable of speaking to one another within a sort of mental world, even coming up with a plan to beat Yoru in the middle of it. Hell, this went as far as to allow Denji to view Asa’s memories. This weird ability to mentally communicate with others is consistently displayed between Denji and Pochita, with a similar thing happening the first time they fused together. Keep in mind that the one time this was used in a combat scenario, it relied on Pochita having control of Denji’s body and it seems to require the other person to be willing to speak with him, so it’s unlikely this is something he can pull off whenever.

Zone State

As mentioned under the section detailing Black Flash, any and all Sorcerers who land the attack will enter something known as “The Zone”, or for the purposes of this blog, Zone State. Referred to by Nanami when explaining the effects Black Flash has on the one who performs it, “Zone State”, more often referred to as “being in the zone”, is a real world concept coined by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi that occurs when one fully immerses themselves into whatever activity they are taking part in, whether that be making music, playing video games, or fighting Jujutsu Satan. In regards to Jujutsu Kaisen however, the concept of “Zone State” is associated more-so with how it is seen in things like sports, in which an athlete becomes so focused that the traditionally separate processes of action and awareness can fuse into one.

When a Sorcerer enters the Zone State, the process of using Cursed Energy is said to become as natural as breathing, to the point a Sorcerer is capable of drawing out up to 120% of their full potential and even awaken under the right circumstances. While unclear how much of a true numerical upgrade the process of entering Zone State should provide, as Black Flash historically has had an extremely shaky history with the concept of multipliers in the past, the Zone State is undeniably extremely beneficial for a Sorcerer to achieve. In the case of Yuji specifically, one could argue by the events of Modulo that he’s practically always in Zone State due to his ability to hit Black Flash on command, as one’s chances of hitting Black Flash are known to increase upon entering Zone State, albeit this is admittedly just pure speculation.

Denji

The Hero of Hell

Denji was at his lowest point in life, so he gave up and when that happened Pochita took over, returning to Full Power as the Hero of Hell. In this form Pochita is basically Chainsaw Man but using his ult like Hulk in Marvel Rivals. His strength, speed, and durability are drastically enhanced to absurd levels. He possesses four chainsaws, and can extend his chains hundreds of meters. His intestine scarf can even be used to grab people and he can expand his mouth like Kirby to swallow Devils larger than him whole. While in this form, Pochita can also regenerate from just his heart alone, and he can even heal from having his heart damaged. His regeneration is so potent it can let him reattach his body parts after being sliced to bits, bounce back from getting flattened, and break out of being turned into a tree by Aging, which is pretty absurd all things considered. During his peak of fear, he was able to instantly reform from being cut clean in half or having half his body (alongside his heart) splattered without the need of any blood. Pochita might seem like an animal, but he is surprisingly intelligent and he has done smart things like tossing his own heart to regenerate next to an opponent.

It should be noted however that again this form is only accessible if Denji gives up on life, but luckily for Denji he has another form which brings us to…

Denji Man

DENJI MAN!! This is the form that Denji takes after he finally understands Pochita’s dream. This form is basically Hero of Hell but with Denji fully in charge and red-colored! He lacks Pochita’s extra arms and doesn’t gain any new powers, but at least he can use this form without having to give up on life, and Denji should be capable of the same things Pochita can do in his Hero of Hell form. Denji put this new form to good use in his battle against Yoru, using his chains to collect all of her Devils. Which were many.

Scaling

Images by WWAL, Toxin T Taker, NormallyNormal, The Kagurabachi, and Blue Igneous

Yuji

As one of the strongest Sorcerers in all of Jujutsu Kaisen, it stands to reason that Yuji should scale to nearly every single feat in the series. Even going off of just the original series, Yuji even before his awakening against Sukuna was considered to be one of Jujutsu High’s heavy-hitters, a group consisting of the likes of Yuta, Maki, and Hakari, all of whom have countless showings or statements putting them on the level of Jujutsu Kaisen’s strongest. That is, with the exception of a few characters, namely Gojo, Sukuna, Mahoraga, and later in Modulo Dabura. It’s safe to say that Yuji during the events of Jujutsu Kaisen shouldn’t scale to these characters considering just how much higher of a level they operate on then even the likes of characters like Kenjaku or the aforementioned Yuta.

By the events of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo however, there should be no debate on if Yuji should scale to them or not, as Yuji himself is likely beyond even Sukuna judging by his brief “fights” in Modulo. The easiest way to exemplify this is Yuji’s Dismantle in Modulo, which created a city-sized explosion eclipsing the likes of Gojo’s Hollow Purple and Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine in sheer destruction. As for Dabura, Yuji himself considers beating him to be as simple as “cleaning up the mess” left behind if Dabura were to defeat Mahoraga, further justifying the idea that Yuji is bare minimum on the level of those Jujutsu society deems as “The Strongest.”

Denji

Denji in his normal well-known devil form was already capable of battling other Devil Hybrids and even the Control Devil Makima. Hybrids like Reze were able to one-shot normal humans and be considered above monsters like the Typhoon Devil, so that’s already a good start. It’s with Pochita’s greater power that through his stronger forms, Denji is able to truly stand as one of the top tiers of the verse. Mainly shown with him being able to fight an end of serious Yoru, who previously beat the Falling Devil with relative ease. Falling is a primal fear, a type of devil far beyond massive verse threats like the Gun Devil, and other primals like Darkness were able to put Horsemen like Makima on her knees. Safe to say, when either Pochita or Denji have the reins over the former’s full power, they should be significantly above most feats in the series, and on par with the strongest of the strong.

Weaknesses

Yuji

Yuji prior to Modulo was very stagnant as a fighter; much of his learning was severely impeded by the events of the Shibuya Incident, which prevented him from gaining anything important prior to Gojo and Sukuna’s duel. Despite the showing of his quick learning in the month leading to the showdown, Yuji was still very inexperienced with the new abilities he gained such as Blood Manipulation and Reverse Cursed Technique, where he required others like Choso to cover for his mistakes.

As a general sorcerer weakness, even though Yuji is comparable to obscenely powerful individuals like Sukuna with huge amounts of it, Cursed Energy is a limited resource; even combatants like Yuta and Gojo, despite their immense reserves, have explicitly that: reserves. And because Cursed Energy resides in the brain, severe enough trauma to the head may likely disrupt Yuji’s ability to use his CTs or RCT.

Denji

While Denji’s devil powers give him incredible powers, he is by no means unbeatable. His regeneration has a limit regardless of form, as his blood supply will eventually run out. This is even more of an issue in his base state, as he requires blood to maintain the Devil Hybrid form (though doesn’t seem to apply as HoH or DM). The nail in the coffin is that having less blood makes Denji weaker overall, meaning that constant power usage leads to a longevity that’s lower than you’d expect. He can get blood from outside sources of course, but that isn’t a reliable source in most situations. Additionally, while he’s not dumb or anything, his strategic skills aren’t the best. He’s good at adapting and thinking outside the box, sure, but he lacks formal training and can consistently take a bit to get an understanding of a new situation.

Before we get to concluding things, we figured it would be best to go over a lot of arguments for higher end stats that both series have that we’re not in favor of. Essentially, think of this as a speedrun breakdown of different arguments that we don’t really have faith in. If you think something’s missing, don’t worry, it’ll probably be saved for the verdict itself instead. Gojo causing an Earthquake

  • Gojo’s unsealing from the Prison Realm caused an earthquake, no ifs or buts about it; the strength one can get for this, at minimum, gets 515.2 Kilotons of TNT. However there is a method to get this higher. A major plot point of Gojo’s imprisonment was that Kenjaku placed him eight kilometers below sea level to prevent his escape on top of having several curses guard it. However, because this is where the subduction zone for the Japan Trench is located, one could assume that the earthquake was caused by Gojo shifting a tectonic plate, a possibility given that Gojo’s clothing is damaged following his escape, implying a fight occurred between him and the cursed spirits. The shifting of a tectonic plate requires much more energy than more traditional earthquakes, increasing this feat all the way up to 10 Gigatons of TNT. However, this upgrade is admittedly very shaky due to the feat occurring entirely offscreen and the cast’s reaction to such a feat not matching the visuals of the numbers one can give the feat. This feat is by far the most contentious of the ones described within this section, and will be clarified on more within the verdicts properly.

Verdicts

We’ll be handling this Verdict a little differently than usual. Instead using a more official Death Battle styled category system rather than the typical Stats/Arsenal & Abilities/Tertiaries format in order to better get across what advantages and comparisons matter most. Clarification out of the way, that raises the question: what comparisons do matter most here?

Both fighters are extremely capable. With extremely potent and dangerous powers, in conjunction with unpredictable strategies and sheer unstoppable might, we’ll be figuring out this match by looking at Speed, Combat Prowess, Offense, and Endurance.

Speed

From a glance, Yuji and Denji both have very similar feats within the hypersonic ranges. For one, sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen, which obviously includes Yuji, are able to reflexively perform the Black Flash, which can net a high-end number of Mach 932.9. These numbers are easily defeated by Pochita, who threw his heart back down into Earth from space at a speed of Mach 2,371.17. However, Mach 932.9 is not the end-all-be-all stat for Yuji when it comes to speed. In Modulo, we are shown that Yuji, for all intents and purposes, is able to predict and even perform Black Flashes on command. This is not unlike his mentor Gojo, who has stated that he is more than capable of performing Black Flashes whenever he wanted to if the activation requirement for it was solely linked to timing. Taking this into account, the speed required for someone like Yuji to be able to activate the Black Flash without doing so unconsciously would be Mach 2915.45, just barely faster than Pochita throwing his heart down from space.

But that’s not the end of the story. To get a grander view into their speed feats, both Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man have several that enter the relativistic to lightspeed ranges. Yoru, who summoned the Gun Devil and Tank Devil to become her gauntlets prior, forced them to travel at speeds of 3.64c. We know that Pochita and Denji Man would scale to this because the former consumed Lil’ D right before Yoru could turn her into a weapon. This scaling chain should be fairly consistent as later on, Denji Man dodged the US Flag that Yoru summoned as a homing missile from the moon, which nets around 1.25c. But as a matter of fact, these numbers can be beaten out by Yuji too. Seeing as he would easily upscale Sukuna by Modulo, Yuji should be more than capable of reacting to something like Kashimo’s EM Waves, which can get upwards of 5.3 to 7.4c. This, in every scenario, would demand that Yuji take this category…

…but unfortunately for him, Gege hates powerscaling and the main problem holding Yuji back here is simply narrative consistency. In some shape or form, all of the speed feats that go beyond relativistic in Jujutsu Kaisen have some sort of issue behind it that prevents it from being usable.

To explain why, we must first look at the context of Dabura’s feat, who maximized his movement speed up to 0.0969c in his battle against Mahoraga. Seeing as Yuji is at the top of the chain in Jujutsu Kaisen by this point, we should theoretically be able to scale him to this, as Yuji has stated he would be able to handle Dabura without any issues. However, Mahoraga, who had already adapted to Dabura’s technique by this point, was explicitly blitzed by Dabura’s move, so this scaling chain starts becoming rather questionable. Dabura himself was struggling to move at this speed in the first place due to air resistance, and the resulting attack caused an explosion that blew up a sizable chunk of Shinjuku, which would imply that the theory of relativity, contrary to most other powerscaling scenarios, would apply to Jujutsu Kaisen and effectively kill lightspeed feats due to reaching lightspeed becoming physically impossible without extreme destruction.

This forces us to recontextualize the relativistic – lightspeed feats for Jujutsu Kaisen. For Kashimo’s EM Waves in particular, this feat is already on thin ice for one kind of hilarious reason, that being Kashimo seemingly never actually fires EM Waves. The narrator’s description of the “EM Waves” does not line up whatsoever with how Kashimo fights against Sukuna during their brief scuffle, as it is stated he uses them to “vaporize irradiated objects” of which Sukuna obviously isn’t, and the things that are hit by Kashimo simply explode rather than vaporize. Even buying that they are EM Waves, Kashimo must be infusing them with Cursed Energy, which contains mass, which means they can no longer move at the speed of light. As for Jacob’s Ladder, which gets 0.332c, it’s much easier to argue Sukuna simply aim-dodged the firing of the laser by detecting Hana’s presence ahead of time either through his direct line of sight or a Sorcerer’s ability to react to attacks before they occur by detecting the “sparks of Cursed Energy” as otherwise this would mean Grade 1 Sorcerers like Ino and Kusakabe have better reaction times than Mahoraga, who, again, was blitzed by Dabura after having already adapted to his technique.

And just before anybody starts getting any crazy ideas about this part, no Jujutsu Kaisen does not cap out at Mach 3. Gege himself thinks some of the numeric statements he wrote (including Mach 3 and the 2.5 factor for Black Flash) are ridiculous and the MAPPA BBL upscale consistently contradicts Narrator statements from the manga to the point of outright retconning or removing them.

In short, no matter if you scale Yuji to something as low as the Black Flash’s activation (Mach 2915.45) or as high as Dabura’s speed (0.0969c) or some other undiscovered feat in-between, Denji would be between 37.5x to as insane as 1103x faster than Yuji! So while both series have feats beyond relativistic speeds, Denji’sdo not require nearly as much scrutiny, making his ultimately much more feasible and putting him at leagues faster than Yuji.

Combat Prowess

To specify, the focus here will be their abilities and skills, and how good they are at applying those in a fight. And while Denji definitely is the better quickdraw, what Yuji can actually pull out is simply far, far more impressive. Right off the bat, he is definitely the better fighter. Despite his lack of education, Denji isn’t a complete idiot and is shockingly perceptive, but typically his hand-to-hand interactions rely on well timed swings rather than any special skills. In contrast, close quarters combat is Yuji’s specialty with his incredible timing and martial arts showings. Makes sense, considering Yuji has actively received extensive training from several teachers and allies, whereas Denji honed his instincts under Kishibe for a shorter period of time in comparison. Again, this isn’t to say Denji isn’t impressive in his tactics and adaptation, but Yuji simply has far better showings and teachings.

This skill gap is even more problematic when it comes to their abilities. While Denji has range with his chains, he doesn’t actually have projectiles (at least not traditional ones). Yuji on the other hand can decimate from a distance with Shrine and Blood Manipulation, with each being especially dangerous for different reasons. It wasn’t addressed beforehand, but something to note is that when it comes to piercing/cutting attacks specifically, Denji’s durability is consistently lower than his durability versus blunt force.

To explain it briefly, Denji (and Pochita) are utterly plagued by anti-feats; he has been pierced by one of the Crossbow Hybrid’s arrows, impaled by Spear Hybrid’s spear, and even cut by the Centipede Devil. In short, if Denji were to be hit by Shrine, his poor piercing durability would more than likely cause him to fall short. Blood Manipulation on the other hand is a bit tricky. Its innate toxic properties could definitely prove problematic, though at the same time one could argue Denji’s benefits from blood absorption would be more beneficial than detrimental. More on that later on in the discussion.

Slap on Divergent Fist for hard-to-read attacks, Black Flash for sudden bursts, and god forbid Yuji pops his Domain Expansion. Direct physical attacks are especially bad due to Yuji’s soul targeting properties, meaning he would be able to target the soul, which Denji has no protection against. This isn’t applicable to all his attacks, of course but it’s dangerous regardless as Shrine already exploits Denji’s biggest weakness. In comparison, Denji’s chainsaw spam and chains are certainly dangerous, but definitely less versatile. Of course, Denji also has the ability to just erase things from existence by eating them, but it’s plain silly to assume that he’d go for this move against Yuji when he’s not even a Devil with a concept to erase to begin with. Even if you tenuously say that Curses and Devils are the same, Yuji’s Death Painting Womb physiology still leans towards belonging to a human rather than a Curse’s, much like his brother Choso. With everything said, Yuji solidly takes Combat Prowess.

This is where we hit a splitting point, and there is disagreement on the winner due to disagreements regarding the final two categories. Thus, we will now transition into a standard split verdict format detailing each side’s thoughts on Offense and Endurance, and why said thoughts lead to either Yuji or Denji winning.

Yuji

Offense

As the de facto strongest characters in each of their respective universes, it’s no surprise that Yuji & Denji aren’t just strong, but very, VERY strong. When it comes to just their direct feats, we can compare Yuji’s Dismantle in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo to Denji’s killing of the Typhoon Devil, with the former getting up to 382.69 Megatons of TNT and the latter getting the respectable but much lower 14.8 Megatons of TNT using the highest possible end for Typhoon. This results in a difference of nearly 26x in Yuji’s favor, but obviously, things aren’t that simple, and this is where the tide shifts to favor Mr. Chainsaw.

Yuji should more then easily scale to the likes of Kenjaku, who survived the initial gravitational pull of Yuki’s miniaturized Black Hole, which gets numbers of up to 676 Megatons of TNT. Denji, however, can scale to the likes of the Gun Devil’s destruction of Mt. Elbrus, which can get numbers of up to 1.45 Gigatons of TNT. This alone would put the strength gap at around 2.14x, and Denji can arguably be scaled all the way to 3.4 Gigatons of TNT depending on different time frames given for Yoru’s firing of the Gun Goddess bullet, but we personally believe that such time frames are much more dubious than the likes of the Gun Devil’s Mt. Elbrus feat and therefore are not accounted for here. Overall, while notable, the strength gap isn’t as wide as one might think, at least if not for the likes of the Falling Devil and the State Swords.

Numbers for these can reach anywhere from 2.12 to 15.36 Gigatons of TNT for the likes of Falling Devil’s planet-wide gravity reversal and 129.32 to 487.2 Gigatons of TNT for the likes of Yoru’s compression of Oregon. To get the latter out of the way first, none of us on Team Yuji believe that the State Swords are valid to use for scaling for the reasons listed in the Arguments Against section, as they blatantly just aren’t shown to retain the mass of the objects they are formed from and have absolutely nothing that suggests Yoru’s compression is something she must physically strain herself to use. Falling however, is a bit more difficult, but we on Team Yuji do think that the feat isn’t completely foolproof, as it occurs entirely offscreen, as well as the fact that the damage being caused is entirely based on assuming that Falling did the same damage to every country, which isn’t really substantiated narratively and the same amount of wreckage could have been done without that level of damage, especially given the fact that all it did was make the countries poorer, there’s no confirmation the same damage that was done to Japan was done worldwide. As well, a lot of Falling’s attacks are based on effectiveness based on mental state, which also makes arguing it specifically for physicals a bit odd. While we aren’t entirely against it, we would like to bring up that it is a shaky at best argument.

Even with Falling being taken into consideration however, we believe that Yuji has a similarly shaky argument that can be used to match it with the earthquake caused by Gojo’s unsealing. While this traditionally clocks in at 515.2 Kilotons of TNT, this feat can get much higher if one assumes the earthquake was caused by Gojo shifting a tectonic plate, with the reason such an assumption can be made being the fact that Kenjaku placed the Prison Realm within the subduction zone, a place where tectonic plates meet and cause high-scale earthquakes. Numbers for this can get all the way up to 10 Gigatons of TNT, making Yuji around 3x stronger then the higher ends for the Gun Goddess and 1.5x weaker than the highest end for the Falling Devil’s gravity reversal. Of course, as mentioned in its Before the Verdict section, this feat is not perfect, as it occurs entirely off-screen and the brief visuals we get of our cast’s reaction to the earthquake don’t match what an earthquake on this level should theoretically cause.

Due to the issues this feat has, we do believe that Denji no matter what should take strength over Yuji, but only by around 1.5x – 2.14x, a notable gap but not one that is impossible for Yuji to recover from. Remember, this category isn’t just about strength, but offense, and Yuji’s abilities allow him to play offense incredibly well. To start, while debatable, Yuji’s blood should affect Denji to at least some degree, as characters like Power have been shown to be susceptible to the effects of alcohol in one’s bloodstream and characters like the Violence Fiend have explicitly had poison used on him to weaken and placate him. To get into specifics, the poison of the Death Painting Wombs begins to take effect upon entering the bloodstream of an opponent, and once in effect, will severely weaken them to the point where they can even die from it in an incredibly short period of time. In Jujutsu Kaisen, this poison can be healed from using the Reverse Cursed Technique, but this is explicitly done through locating and flushing out the source of the poison rather than merely healing it.

While blood does heal and turn into new flesh for a Devil, it’s unknown if the blood is just completely transmuted into flesh or stays within the body to an extent, which is an important distinction since if Yuji’s blood was absorbed by Denji whether it be through his mouth or his skin, that blood would then mix into his, and if not flushed out would weaken Denji immensely. While we obviously can’t put a number to how much it’d weaken him, considering Naoya was left vomiting blood and unable to move after just a few seconds of Choso’s blood entering his system and Special Grades like Uraume were weakened to the point of their Technique dissipating, it stands to reason that Yuji’s blood would weaken Denji to at least some extent, especially the more and more of it he theoretically absorbs. Considering Yuji also knows of and has used this poison offensively, it’s entirely possible if not likely he would resort to such a strategy.

This would inhibit Denji’s regeneration to a fair degree, as it means he can’t really use any of Yuji’s blood to heal off of him, which renders his healing factor much less effective than it otherwise would be. The amount of ways Yuji can use Blood Manipulation is also absurd – homing arrows, gigantic Supernovas, these would all be quite difficult for Denji to dodge even with his greater mobility. It also really doesn’t help that Denji would not dodge blood, at least at first, considering he literally heals off of it, so the poison would absolutely hit and affect him, weakening and potentially slowing him further.

However, Blood Manipulation isn’t Yuji’s most potent option by a long shot – that would have to be Shrine, which has frankly absurd capabilities. Yuji is able to launch Dismantles with AoE able to cover entire cities without even moving his hands, and has the precision to cube someone to small bits, as shown with what Sukuna did to Nanako – with an attack on this level being far beyond what we’ve seen for even the peak of Denji’s regeneration. While he may be stronger, it’s important to keep in mind Chainsaw Man characters have shown a consistent jobbing streak to piercing attacks or attacks involving swords, with Denji needing to parry them via his chainsaws. Considering that Dismantles are invisible and the amount of them and the range Yuji can use at a time, it’s not something Denji could easily parry, even with his speed advantage, and even being hit by one would be very debilitating. While yes, Denji can sense the Dismantles, the fact he can’t see them and needs to parry every single one (of which Yuji can spam out an absurd amount, this is basically like Denji having to play a Touhou game against projectiles he literally can’t physically see and can only sense) with his chainsaws or else he’d get significantly hindered, combined with Yuji’s poisoned blood would make it very difficult for Denji to ever approach.

This isn’t even getting into Yuji’s own instant win moves – namely, Soul Dismantles and Domain Expansion. Denji has zero resistance to soul manipulation, so any hits Yuji does with his fists would hit Denji’s soul and be something he simply can’t cleanly heal from, and Soul Dismantles in particular would likely just kill Denji outright, considering even someone like Sukuna was annihilated in precisely two of them despite his ability to visualize, protect, and even heal his own soul. Domain Expansion would also do such a thing, as Denji would no longer be able to simply dodge the attacks to the Guaranteed-Hit affect, and considering the fact some varieties can take place in as little as 0.2 seconds (which Yuji has witnessed), it’d be difficult for Denji to move out of range in time – if Yuji ever pulls this off, he’d instantly win the fight.

Overall, we believe that Denji’s advantage in terms of raw stats (slight in strength and massive in speed) and Yuji’s several ways of debilitating or instantly taking him out of the fight mean in terms of raw offenses, they essentially come to a draw.

Endurance

In spite of all these advantages though, there’s no denying that considering the slight but noticeable strength gap and the ludicrous speed gap, that if Yuji isn’t able to survive Denji’s attacks then it’s unlikely any of his advantages mentioned thus far are going to matter in the first place. Luckily, we on Team Yuji believe that he has just the right tools for the job. For starters, the basic combination of Cursed Energy reinforcement and the Reverse Cursed Technique have allowed for ludicrous bouts of durability from characters within Jujutsu Kaisen, most notably Gojo surviving through the likes of Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine.

For context, during Gojo and Sukuna’s first Domain Clash, the former would lose unexpectedly to the surprise of everyone except for Sukuna himself, with Gojo being forced to rely on nothing more than his own reinforcement and activation of Reverse Cursed Technique to try and survive the onslaught of attacks. Somehow, Gojo pulled it off, despite the fact that Malevolent Shrine is a constant continuous barrage of Dismantles and Cleaves that reduce anything within their vicinity to dust, on top of the fact that Gojo’s output was dampened due to being on burn-out after losing the Domain Clash, and Sukuna’s output being greatly boosted by the stat bonus his Domain grants him. This feat is, again, ludicrous and should be applicable to Yuji considering his status by the likes of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and obviously a feat of this caliber is incredibly important in the context of Denji, who similarly is going to be assaulting Yuji with a constant barrage of slashes he’s initially going to be surprised by that are stronger than him. Unlike his mentor however, Yuji obviously wouldn’t be on burnout while dealing with this, meaning he can vaguely upscale this feat of survival to some extent.

Cursed Energy reinforcement and RCT aren’t the only defensive tools Yuji has however, as Shrine can allow Yuji to essentially make a “pseudo-infinity” capable of deflecting weapons swung at him by coating his body in miniaturized Dismantles. It should be noted that unlike reinforcement, this ability does require more conscious activation, but considering we believe it’s unlikely that Denji would kill Yuji in a single slice or even an initial barrage, Yuji should be able to activate this defensive layer adding another notch in his armor that Denji must struggle to break through. Even beyond that, while not as potent as the other 2 defensive abilities mentioned thus far, Yuji’s Blood Manipulation allows him to harden parts of his body to make a sort of blood armor, with characters like Choso using this to block Black Flashes from Sukuna of all people. This is very notable, as Sukuna in this state was able to severely wound the likes of Yuta, who is far beyond Choso’s power, and yet his attacks were still able to be blocked by this armor. As a result, someone like Denji, who is closer to Yuji in power, would have great difficulty bypassing it. This armor isn’t unbreakable of course, but it’s another handy addition that Yuji could rely on to survive Denji’s attacks.

On the topic of Blood Manipulation, due to us believing that Yuji’s poisonous blood would affect Denji and Devils absorbing blood through their skin, any of Yuji’s blood that comes into contact with Denji runs the risk of poisoning him, which would severely weaken if not outright cripple him. This further isn’t helped by the fact that Yuji can use the blood spilled from his body as a weapon, whether that be turning them into tons of blood daggers like Choso did or exploding his blood as a surprise attack to halt Denji’s offense. This is also where Denji’s status as a glass cannon in regards to piercing attacks, at least relative to Yuji, becomes far more important, as a single successful Dismantle from Yuji would instantly carve away at least an entire limb from Denji, and when combined with Yuji’s poisonous blood debilitating his healing factor and weakening him over time, any damage Yuji takes is going to be far more impactful than any damage Denji does to Yuji.

Finally, the more debilitated Denji becomes the longer the fight goes on, the easier it is for Yuji to land his most dangerous win-condition, Domain Expansion. While Denji should have no issue escaping the activation of a Domain at full health, Denji obviously isn’t going to be nearly as capable of doing so when he’s struck with 38 different illnesses and struggling to regenerate. By the time Yuji’s Domain Expansion lands, it’d be an instant-win because Denji has zero counterplay. His superior speed and ability to parry Yuji’s ranged attacks, well… let’s just say… it doesn’t matter. The Domain Expansion grants Yuji guaranteed hits, something that bypasses even Gojo’s seemingly impervious Infinity, and said effect uses Soul Dismantles, which negates Denji’s traditional defenses altogether, slashing at something he has shown both no ability to protect and no ability to regenerate on account of Chainsaw Man not really exploring the idea of souls too much.

While Denji may have the much superior healing factor, there’s no doubt in our mind that the combination of Yuji’s much greater defensive abilities, poisonous blood, and Denji’s immense struggles with piercing damage lead us to believe that Endurance should go to Yuji, making this the final category the Sorcerer needs to take home the crown.

Conclusion

“Until recently, I thought life was about understanding your role and trying to fulfill it. If I had died doing that, then I could say I died a good death. But now, I don’t think that’s right. Just walking your dog and raising a family are also decent roles. And even if all you do is eat and shit, or lie sick in bed, or don’t connect with anyone and end up leaving nothing behind, instead of memories giving form to your life, small fragments of memory are out there anyway, floating around and giving your life value.”

Advantages:

  • Shrine allows him to force Denji to play defensively due to his poor piercing durability
  • Poisonous blood would debilitate Denji quite a bit
  • Far more skilled and experienced
  • Far better defensive options and longevity
  • Domain Expansion negates Denji’s speed advantage
  • Soul damage would bypass regeneration altogether
  • MAPPA’s favorite child
  • AIZO AIZO

Disadvantages:

  • Slightly weaker
  • Significantly slower to an extreme degree
  • Worse survivability
  • It doesn’t matter.

This fight was anything but a walk in the dog park for Yuji. No matter which arguments we present, Denji is always going to be stronger than Yuji and much, MUCH faster, and while both of these can be mitigated, they’re still undeniably going to be the case and something we have to account for. However, while this may seem open and shut on paper because of this, we believe that Yuji can overcome these disadvantages and just barely eke out the win.

In terms of speed, while Denji is ludicrously faster, Yuji’s ranged options will keep Denji on his toes at all times, especially considering Yuji’s homing options such as Piercing Blood or the sheer size and amount of Dismantles he can send at any time. Obviously the speed gap does still mean that Denji is going to have a more than easy enough time reacting to and deflecting things like Dismantles with his chainsaws, but this is where elements like Yuji’s poisonous blood come into play. For all intents and purposes, Denji has no reason to try and avoid any of Yuji’s attacks relating to Blood Manipulation early on because he’s going to just see it as a free resource for him to take advantage of. Thanks to this, Denji is inevitably going to get poisoned, which would heavily affect him physically and make it far easier for Yuji to take advantage of holes in his defense with things like Shrine.

As for strength, while Denji is stronger, we don’t believe it is to such an extent that he’ll instantly kill Yuji in a single slash or even a barrage. Gojo was able to endure and regenerate through a surprise onslaught of slashes from a stronger individual while being actively weakened due to being on burn-out, and when considering the fact Yuji wouldn’t need to worry about burn-out alongside the fact that his blood could weaken Denji near instantly if we go by what it did to people in Modulo, it’s entirely possible that Denji’s onslaught stops before it can really even begin. It should also of course be noted that Denji’s strength advantage does not apply to his durability, at least his piercing durability, with piercing attacks from characters absurdly weaker then Denji having a more then easy enough time cutting through him, it stands to reason that someone closer to him in strength like Yuji would cut through his flesh like it was nothing. Of course, Yuji actually has to have these attacks land for this to happen, but considering the poison as well as the fact that Yuji can not only use Shrine as a form of piercing damage but also turn his own blood into say a literal rain of daggers like how Choso did, it’s not unlikely for Yuji to land a solid clean hit on Denji eventually that he’ll have trouble easily repairing the damage of.

Finally, the ultimate fact of the matter for us is that Denji’s harming of Yuji…can then just lead to it harming Denji via, again, his poisonous blood. The more Denji comes into contact with or consumes it, the worse things are going to get for him, even momentarily, and any moment of weakness that Denji shows is something that Yuji can and will take advantage of, and it’s entirely possible that Denji will eventually become too weak to actively avoid Yuji’s ultimate win maneuver, that being his Domain Expansion. No matter what, if this successfully lands, Yuji is killing Denji as practically all of his advantages become impossible to really act upon. His superior speed doesn’t matter when every attack in the Domain is guaranteed to hit, his ability to deflect attacks is rendered void due to the fact that Soul Dismantles inside his Domain ignore requiring contact altogether, and his strength advantage just isn’t able to be taken advantage of due to the fact that Denji’s complete lack of soul defenses means a single Soul Dismantle is likely just killing him outright.

No matter which way you slice or dice it, Yuji’s greater combat prowess, similar offensive capabilities, and much better endurance lead us to believe that the Strongest Sorcerer of Tomorrow will make the Chainsaw Devil yesterday’s news. The winner is Itadori Yuji.

Denji

Offense

In terms of power (not that one), Yuji and Denji have shown some impressive showcases of pure physical strength. By the time of Modulo, Yuji was able to fire off a casual Dismantle that was calculated at 382.69 Megatons. In comparison, Denji has been able to rip apart the Typhoon Devil who has caused a storm that covered all of Tokyo which is often considered to be around 412.9 Kilotons to 14.8 Megatons. Now clearly this means Yuji has the edge in strength right? Well not exactly. This is only Denji in his base form.

As the Hero of Hell/Denji Man, Denji’s power is drastically increased. In fact, he could fight with threats strong enough to one-shot Primal fears, who would be far stronger than the Gun Devil, a monster that shattered a mountain while flying out of a base. The energy required to achieve that feat is around 1.45 Gigatons of TNT which is around 3.79 times stronger compared to Yuji’s strongest direct showing.

Well what about scaling? Surely JJK’s strongest feats will allow Yuji to take the win in this category right? Well again, not exactly. The strongest feat Yuji could scale to would be one that was performed by his mother Kenjaku. Kenny managed to survive being crumpled by the initial pull of Yuki’s Black Hole. This feat would be around 676.21 Megatons of energy which is impressive for sure. Unfortunately for our Jujustu Sorcerer it’s not enough to beat out Denji’s scaling to the Gun Devil as even with this feat in mind Denji would still be 2.14 times stronger.

Including scaling would make Denji even stronger in fact. As Denji would then scale to the Falling Devil causing destruction around the world with her presence which scales to around 2.12 Gigatons to 15.36 Gigatons of TNT.  Making Denji anywhere from 3.14 times stronger to 22.7 times stronger than Yuji. While there’s some contention with scaling people to Falling’s feat, there’s quite a lot of context that supports it being perfectly viable.

For one, the destruction caused by Falling’s gravity created by her mere presence was so severe it caused significant damage to all nations of the world and left them in poverty from the damage, forcing them to go to war. This was a major plot point for Yoru becoming stronger later on, so it’s pretty evident the intention was that Falling’s gravity dealt severe damage to the whole world. It was not just major cities either, as her gravitational fluctuations caused landslides and cave-ins across the entire world, indicating her gravity was working on land indiscriminately rather than targeting specific cities. This could be explained with the idea that Falling was simply focusing her powers to be stronger on major countries like the US or Soviet Russia, and that she wasn’t generating the same degree of energy across every country… but this quickly falls apart under the context that Falling wasn’t even attempting to damage any countries in the first place.

Falling’s arrival in Japan was solely to pick up “groceries” to feed her Devil guests, specifically Asa/Yoru at the request of Lil’ D. She had no intention of actively causing damage to any specific countries, and in fact actively avoids killing humans when necessary unless they attack her first. By all accounts, she could not have specifically increased the power of her gravity on particular cities or locations while leaving others untouched… because she wasn’t trying to destroy any of them to begin with. And she could not have avoided targeting any land beyond areas where humans resided… because she wasn’t targeting all humans on the planet to begin with. This becomes particularly blatant when you look at the original Japanese text itself:

“It seems that just by the Demon of Falling appearing, gravity temporarily reversed in every corner of the world.

Every country suffered damage and became impoverished at the same time.”

“It’s not just Japan! Due to the appearance of the Demon of Falling, abnormalities in gravity are occurring in countries around the world, leading to a series of cave-ins and landslides!”

The idea that Falling’s gravity affected all parts of the world simultaneously just as a passive side effect of her appearance is very clearly the intention, as Yoru herself states her gravity was literally affecting every corner of it and we know she only appeared in Japan to capture and feed Asa (alongside a couple other humans) to her personal kitchen. Thus, you cannot argue that Falling made her gravity stronger in specific parts of the world; her energy would have to be spread out consistently, since her gravitational shifts were not something she willingly controlled to attack every part of the world, and the narrative clearly supports the idea her gravity affected the entire world in the same way it did Japan. Since we have visuals for how strong her passive gravity was on Japan, we can simply utilize inverse-square law to find the total energy she was passively exerting around the planet, which is what yields said results.

Since Denji can compete with Yoru’s strength, who could nonchalantly overpower Falling’s attempts to attack her with her gravity and one-shot her (which would naturally be stronger than the calculated value here, as she was actively focusing her gravity to attack Yoru rather than her passively emitted one), Denji would significantly upscale this value. Even if you were really against Falling’s feat, the high-end for the Gun Goddess clocks in at 3.4 Gigatons of TNT, which would make Denji 5x stronger. Yuji’s only way to keep up with Falling’s feat is through the high-end of Gojo’s earthquake, though as the Before the Verdict pointed out, this has no real, tangible proof besides the fact Gojo was inside the subduction zone when he fought the Curses and caused an earthquake. Gojo could have very well just caused the shaking without being strong enough to shift entire tectonic plates, and there’s no proof to point against this idea, making it far shakier to push than Falling’s feat, which has a ton of narrative backing to it.

All that being said, Denji would still be more than twice as strong anyways with just the safe end that is the Gun Devil’s mountain bust, no high-end Gun Goddess or Falling Devil arguments required. It doesn’t matter as the chainsaw hero will always have an AP edge with the only thing scaling determining is how big it is. Raw Power specifically goes to Denji (I mean she does live with him after all).

But wait, given we’re examining Offense generally here. What about Yuji’s better abilities? With Shrine and Blood Manipulation, couldn’t he get past the power gap? Especially considering Denji’s historically poor piercing durability. On paper, yes, his powers give him means to match in potential damage. But NOT how much damage will actually occur, as he needs to land those hits after all. As explained earlier, Denji would be leagues faster than Yuji. Denji would be anywhere from 37.5x to 1103x faster than the Jujutsu Sorcerer; well into blitzing territory. This makes the already established power advantage much more devastating for Yuji, as Yuji would be facing attacks beyond what he can endure at speeds he cannot react to. On the other hand, this means Denji is going to have a far easier time evading Yuji’s own attacks, limiting the effectiveness of Yuji’s Offense.

Whether Denji fully resists Yuji’s blood is a bit harder to say, since while he could absolutely resist its acidic properties given his own acid resistances, his poison resistances primarily amount to the Violence Fiend being able to breathe in poisonous gas powerful enough to keep him docile 24/7 for a long period of time, then instantly recover from his effects the moment the mask is off. Yuji’s poisonous blood does seem to cause more volatile reactions within targets that are hit, implying it might be more potent than Violence’s mask, but given Denji would be healing from Yuji’s blood regardless just from it coming into contact with him, it generally means that any detrimental effects from Yuji’s blood could be mitigated and ultimately overcome by Denji healing from it alongside his pre-existing resistance. This is theoretical though of course, but there’s also the simple point that if Denji finishes the fight fast enough (which as explained he has the offense to do so), he’d just kill Yuji before the effects slow him down too much.

Yuji could try to take the fight at range to limit the blitzing attacks, but the issue with that is the fact that Denji has chains that could easily pull Yuji into melee range. There is no way Yuji would be able to see the chains coming as well since they also move at incredible speeds. This is on top of the fact that Denji should have superior travel speed as well, meaning any fight Yuji tries to take at range is merely delaying the inevitable. Denji will close the gap in distance and get the dicing attacks needed to cut Yuji to pieces like a Pizza Cutter.

Overall, Offense goes to Denji.

But what about Domain Expansion? This should completely counter the speed gap via sheer hit mechanics and let Yuji attack Denji without him being able to dodge. Technically speaking Denji would still be attacking at a far faster rate, but given how dangerous Yuji’s abilities are, just a little time in his domain could be fatal for Chainsaw Man. The question thus becomes whether or not Yuji has the Endurance to last long enough to release his Domain.

Endurance

Will Yuji be able to endure Denji’s Offense long enough to take advantage of his own? For figuring that out, we need to analyze his Endurance and see if it has what it takes to endure the Chainsaw Man.

RCT is obviously very potent, being able to heal cut off limbs and major cuts through the body. The notable thing is that Yuji’s reserves are very strong, comparable to top special grades and able to last long battles. This is without restoring cursed energy via Black Flashes, which of course Yuji is great at landing. He also has extra defensive measures to mitigate damage in the first place with blood manipulation and general cursed energy reinforcement.

On paper, this looks pretty strong. The issue is when you look at what it’s up against, and what it lacks. What Yuji is facing is an opponent ranging from twice to several times stronger than his durability can withstand, attacking from thirty to over a thousand times faster than what he can keep up with. When facing offense like this, Yuji’s great longevity isn’t what he needs: he needs the survivability to stay alive after these hits, which he lacks. If a blow is instantly fatal, like decapitation or being cut in half, RCT can’t heal that. Just ask Gojo. And if a series of blows is too fast, Yuji isn’t going to be able to heal during the blows since they’re landing faster than he can process them. Just ask Gojo… again. Yuji wouldn’t even be able to focus on CE Reinforcement to lower the effectiveness of Denji’s piercing attacks, as blocking said type of attacks requires sorcerers to focus their energy on the specific spots struck… which he’d be unable to do due to being so much slower, meaning he’s at a very real risk of having limbs immediately chopped off before he can do anything.

In contrast, Denji’s longevity isn’t as good due to less full body defenses and blood being harder to restore than cursed energy. But he, funnily enough, actually has the survivability Yuji is lacking. Denji has been able to come back from being cut in half, being cut into pieces, even just his heart by itself is enough for him to restore himself. If any of his limbs are chopped off, his chains can instantly protrude out and reattach them to undo whatever damage he took. This means that apart from soul-based attacks or completely cutting Denji apart, Yuji’s options for a kill are very limited. And of course, the speed gap makes the former extremely unreliable, and Denji’s chainsaws lack his durability problem. In conjunction with his experience versus moves like Bang? Seemingly invisible slice barrages aren’t really hard to deal with, as his senses would let him detect and block them regardless. Even if Yuji tried to hide or something before sending them out, Pochita instantly detected the Aging Devil’s hiding spot despite being kilometers away, so there’s no way Denji couldn’t immediately find Yuji and block any kind of incoming attack. Not to mention that while it’s not as good, it’s not like Denji’s longevity isn’t impressive in its own right, as he’s been able to instantly bounce back from being cut in half or having half of his body splattered with no source of blood, and with just a tiny drop (which he could easily obtain here), Pochita put his entire chopped-up body back together.

Given Yuji has the better longevity while Denji has the better survivability, Endurance is a tie.

But a tie isn’t what Yuji needs here. He needs to take this category altogether in order to withstand Denji’s Offense, and he lacks the survivability needed to do so. Ironic how the advantage he needs to stay in the game is his opponent’s specialty.

Conclusion

(Credit to minnimaster for the edit)

“I’m broke. Let’s go shake down some seniors.”

Advantages:

  • Either a good bit or immensely more Powerful
  • Significantly faster even with Yuji’s most generous ends
  • Better survivability
  • Chains completely invalidate any distance between them and can reattach limbs
  • Could detect and block Yuji’s invisible Dismantles
  • Can regenerate from Piercing Blood…
  • More than capable of shredding Yuji before he can block with CE Reinforcement
  • Better performing movie
  • 努力 未来 a beautiful star

Disadvantages:

  • Inferior abilities and tactics
  • Worse longevity
  • Dismantle could exploit Denji’s weak piercing durability
  • If hit by physical hits, his healing would be negated by soul attacks
  • …though he’d suffer from some negative effects
  • Themes and Such

There’s a lot going on in this match, but the conclusion is ironically rather simple. Yuji has better abilities and skill, giving him the means to threaten Denji and hypothetically win if things go his way. The issue is that for as many factors as this match has, Denji is simply notably stronger and absurdly faster. Him simply running up and slicing Yuji to bits is a simple and clear path to victory, not really something Yuji can strategize against. Against this stat gap, Yuji simply lacks the right type of endurance to survive long enough to use his best options; not much point in being good at lasting for a while when your opponent can end this in an instant. It additionally helps when Denji’s survivability helps cover for most mistakes he could realistically make, and Yuji can’t ever try to move away and come up with a plan or zone Denji out, as Denji’s chains and super senses make it impossible for him to ever put any distance between them. Said senses also allow him to detect and block Yuji’s Dismantles despite their invisible nature, meaning Yuji is lacking in ways of quickly ending the fight while Denji can simply win by doing what he does best: swinging his chainsaws around like an idiot.

The cursed sorcerer is not one to be underestimated, for he’s certainly mastered his craft. But the Chainsaw Man is simply a far more capable beast than anything they’ve encountered. Too strong and way too fast for even the finest expert of Jujutsu. So Kick Back and relax as the screen Flashes Black, the winner is Denji the Chainsaw Man!

Final Tally

Yuji Itadori (3) – door_kun, Violet, WWAL

Good morning. After your team pointed out a mistranslation in a Bayonetta cosmology entry, I decided to look out for more by investigating the games in Japanese. It turns out this is the only way to understand how this cosmology works. Even if some sections of your “Dante versus Bayonetta” blog entry are outdated, I don’t think you have to worry, since my research still supports your verdict. Here’s the gist of it:

    1. Paradiso and Inferno’s spiritual residents aren’t part of the Multiverse. They aren’t physical composites that exist under the principles of material reality.
    2. Physical composition, including spatial and temporal dimensions, is a contingent existence exclusive to the Multiverse in the Chaos Reality. It came to be through Lord Aesir’s observations, after Jubileus’s Primordial World was split into three realities.
    3. The angelic hierarchy of Laguna is one of ontological/qualitative superiority, with celestial entities closest to God (Jubileus) possessing a higher level of spiritual existence than angels closer to material reality.
    4. Paradiso’s “top tier” residents are pure metaphysical existences that explicitly transcend material concepts. They are the most abstract and divine among the celestial entities.
    5. No matter how many timelines or dimensions the Multiverse expands, it will never generate variants of angels and demons. There’s just one Rodin, Jubileus, and Queen Sheba in the entire Bayonetta-verse.
    6. Angels and demons can make pacts with humans in Purgatorio, granting the latter access to special Magic.
    7. Only humans who can refine Spirit Energy and harness Magic can see and fight angels and demons.
    8. Even with one Eye of the World, Jubileus can destroy the whole setting of the games.
    9. Singularity absorbed all physical composition within the setting, as well as the abyss enveloping the Multiverse, to become the Chaos Reality.

There’s much more to this, so I’m sharing a link to the article I wrote. It includes pictures and texts in Japanese, in case you want to verify my sources. On a quick side note, Kamiya confirmed in his recent book — The World of Kamiya Hideki — that the fusion of the 3 main Bayonettas was permanent and that she didn’t end up in Inferno after defeating Singularity.
