“Perfect is not when two people are together. It’s when you’re both opposite but in that way you complete each other.”
Momo and Okarun, Dandadan’s paranormal partners
Cloak and Dagger, Marvel’s dynamic duo between darkness and light
“Boy meets girl” is a phrase commonly used to describe romance stories. However, those stories aren’t as supernatural as those of these dynamic duos we have here. These two pairs have been through several trials and tribulations and pressed on no matter what was thrown at them. Their unbreakable bonds managed to push them into even greater heights. However, only one couple will be able to continue their journey today. Will Momo & Okarun be able to abduct a victory or will Cloak and Dagger send their world crashing down?
Before We Start…

For Momo and Okarun, we will be using the Dandadan Manga and Anime. For Cloak and Dagger, we will be sticking with the primary Marvel 616 continuity, though Marvel’s Spider-Man and Rivals will be used for movesets. Additionally, this blog contains major spoilers for the Dandadan manga, as of now the anime is currently on its second season and hasn’t caught up to the most recent arc.

Momo & Okarun
Momo – “What the…? Why is my heart racing?”
Okarun – “Sorry, I’m an awkward guy.”
The universe is a place of wonders. From the spirits and yokai that run amok on the earth causing trouble if disrespected or angered. To the stars, where extraterrestrials of all shape and size look down on humanity from above. To Ken Takakura, aliens were just what he needed to no longer be so alone. And to Momo Ayase, spirits had to exist, her grandmother said so!
Momo Ayase was originally your average girl with an intense infatuation with classic Japanese film heartthrob Ken Takakura. When she was a girl, her grandmother, famous medium Seiko Ayase, made her do a ritual for good luck, which led to her getting mocked, even by her childhood friend Jiji. This initially led Momo to hate her grandmother and denied her being a Spirit Medium. Later, Momo realized that she instead hated the idea of her grandma being mocked rather than the bullying itself, leading her to wholeheartedly believe in spirits and her grandmother’s abilities, despite never really knowing if they existed. Momo’s eventual partner in crime, Ken Takakura, had a similar problem. Ever since elementary school, Ken had a hard time fitting in with the crowd and so in a last ditch attempt to make friends he tried contacting aliens. This soon spiraled into an obsession with them, cryptids and conspiracies of all sorts. This sadly, only made Ken’s pre-existing bullying problem worse and it followed him throughout most of his life with one bully even claiming he’d be better off dead.
Eventually their paths would cross after Momo broke up with her dirtbag ex. Left wandering the school in disappointment, she’d stumble onto Ken as he was being bullied yet again. Completely appalled, Momo would intervene and stop the bullies only for Ken to show up a little while later hoping to finally make friends with the gyaru. Instead this spiraled into an argument about whether ghosts and aliens were real, ending in a bet to prove the other wrong. Later that night, the two arrived at their designated areas, Momo going to Nagi Hospital and Okarun to the abandoned tunnel in Shono City. There they were both proven correct. Momo was kidnapped by the horrific alien Serpos and Ken was cursed and possessed by the yokai Turbo Granny.
Ken, while possessed by Turbo Granny, would storm into the Serpos’ UFO and confront them as they were attempting to manipulate Momo’s emotions. Here Ken would declare his desire to protect Momo and she would awaken her psychic powers, destroying the UFO, defeating the Serpos and even suppressing Ken’s curse. After escaping the UFO’s destruction, both Momo and Ken come to accept that both aliens and ghosts are real, and Momo finally learns Ken’s name. Horrified but resolved to help her new partner, Momo dubs him “Okarun” and promises to help him reverse the curse, and from that day onwards the universe would never be the same again.
Cloak & Dagger
Tyrone/Cloak – “I am darkness! Dagger is light! Unable to help ourselves, we have pledged ourselves to help others!”
Tandy/Dagger – “God, I missed this — Cloak and Dagger, together again.”
New York City is full of interesting costumed crime fighters, Daredevil, The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Moon Knight, The Fist of Khonshu, and the Spectacular Web Slinger himself, Spider-Man. But those characters have one thing in common. They are solo acts, usually not in a team or a duo. When it comes to duos in Marvel NYC, none are more iconic than the heroes of light and dark. Cloak and Dagger. But they didn’t start out as heroes.
Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen were originally two ordinary teens whom life had beaten up. Tyrone Johnson was from a lower class neighborhood and he had a disability which caused him to chronically stutter. Despite this, he did his best to be a good student along with his friend Billy. One day however, Tyrone and Billy witnessed a robbery of a local store and the fatal shooting of its clerk. As the thieves fled, Billy did as well fearing that he and Tyrone would be accused of a crime they didn’t commit. When a police officer ordered Billy to stop running, Tyrone tried to proclaim his friend’s innocence, but his stuttering made him impossible to understand and the police officer shot Billy dead. Wreaked with grief, guilt and fear of the world, Tyrone Johnson fled to New York City as a runaway. Ty’s other half, Tandy Bowen, grew up in a wealthy neighborhood. One might think that this would be a happy life for Tandy, but it wasn’t at all. Despite all the money from her mother’s modeling career, it did not change the fact that she was neglected. Her father left her and her mother did not care about her. To make matters worse, her boyfriend Rob Daltry left her to go to college, so due to feeling unloved by pretty much everyone in her personal life, Tandy decided to leave on a bus to New York as a runaway.
While wandering the streets of the Big Apple, a man tried to mug her but she was rescued by Tyrone. The runaway teens began to bond and grew to care for each other. Then came along a man named Simon Marshall who offered food and shelter to anyone down on their luck. Tandy, being naive, decided to go and accept the offer of a shelter. Tyrone followed her because this deal sounded too good to be true and he wanted to protect Tandy. Ty’s suspicions were proven valid when the two teens were forcibly experimented on by Simon with chemicals and an experimental drug.
These inhumane experiments cost the lives of others but Tandy and Tyrone survived. They managed to escape by jumping into a river. However as they made their escape, they began to manifest supernatural powers. When Marshall’s men cornered them, they expected to face Tandy and Tyrone. Instead, they were met with the unrelenting force of the Mutates Cloak and Dagger which drove the men back and defeated them. It was there together they decided to pledge their lives to protect people from dangers on the streets.
Experience & Skill
Momo & Okarun
While Momo and Okarun are far from the most well-trained fighters out there, they have proven time and time again to be incredibly skilled in their own right. Ever since they obtained their powers, they have dealt with nonstop incidents involving aliens or yokai over a very short period of time, with every arc in Dandadan having gaps of a few weeks at most between adventures. Despite the odds being stacked against them on multiple occasions, they have managed to improvise and come out on top.
Momo herself had some amount of knowledge on spiritual matters from her grandmother Seiko, AKA the television medium Santa Dodoria. Seiko taught her a few tricks that she could apply to combat such as the Power of Words. However, where Momo really shines in combat is being able to apply her knowledge, which usually turns out great in her battles against cryptids. For example, she was able to recall the phenomena of “worm suicide” and directly use it as a strategy against the Mongolian Death Worm, and her knowledge of the mantis shrimp and how they could only use their full strength while underwater enabled her to create a strategy against the Serpoians. She’s an incredibly quick thinker, being able to form a plan to destroy the Territory Can, an alien weapon that could transform any who touch it into cans, while in the middle of being attacked by the Alien who had brought it.
Okarun is on a similar boat, as his hand to hand combat skills became very impressive due to his training with Turbo Granny, allowing him to improve his combat rhythm and perform a greater number of actions in short periods of time. This, alongside training to better his physicality, allows Okarun to keep up with and even defeat threats that are superior to him in terms of raw brute force, like the Evil Eye. Just like Momo, he’s capable of thinking up incredibly unorthodox strategies on the fly, such as when he came up with the plan to use a large heater against the Brella Boy who attacked with gusts of wind in order to create a tornado that kept the Yokai ensnared.
Cloak & Dagger
Ever since their initial rise to crime-fighting on the streets of the Big Apple, Cloak and Dagger have gone on many adventures and managed to fight off a wide variety of enemies over the 10 years that they’ve been active in superhero duty. Their experience with gangsters and superpowered threats made them a fighting force that not many could deal with. Dagger in particular likes to train often, and the prior skills she’s picked up before getting her powers proved themselves useful in battle while also showcasing that she picks up new skills fast. Her best showcase of adaptability would have to be the time where she was blinded for many months and not only learned to move while blind but also fight while blind, with these skills furthering Dagger’s overall equilibrium and agility.
That said, Cloak isn’t too far behind, as he can dispatch armies of robots or henchmen in moments, and Cloak and Dagger’s synergy meshes especially well as they deal with everything from common thugs to mythological giants to Carnage-like beasts, being able to handle an entire group of monsters on their own. Even experienced superhumans like Spider-Man and Wolverine admitted the pair were dangerous to fight with brawn alone. Spider-Man in particular considered them both to be so skilled that would be suicidal for him to confront them without a proper plan.
Considering the fact that Cloak and Dagger have managed to team up on and outsmart Spider-Man on more than one occasion, Spider-Man has learned his lesson when it comes to underestimating the duo. They’ve even managed to trail Ol’ Webhead without him noticing, which is pretty impressive considering how good Spidey’s senses are. On a different occasion, Cloak outsmarted Doctor Doom by making him accidentally blow his machine up with a redirected laser attack, so this craftiness against more powerful opponents is certainly consistent.
Equipment
Momo & Okarun
Bats
During her battle against Turbo Granny early in the series, Momo brought along four bats for her to use against the Yokai. In conjunction with her psychic powers, they can be good weapons to use up close or from a distance.
Nanoskin Armor
Provided by Okarun’s friend Kinta Sakata, this armor is made of alien Nanoskin that can be molded to its holder’s imagination. This gave him protection against attacks from Yokai and UMA during the Kozuki Knives arc when Okarun didn’t have access to Turbo Granny’s powers. The suit was equipped with thrusters and pile bunkers that can be used for mobility and to enhance strikes, respectively. While clunky, it is likely comparable to the small Great Kinta battlesuit made by Kinta Sakata. This suit does have a downside; if he directly touches it, it will mold to Okarun’s thoughts whether he wants it to or not. This can make the suit vulnerable to being destroyed
While not part of the suit itself, Okarun has also used Nanoskin to create airbags to dampen impacts. While Okarun is not as proficient in the use of Nanoskin as other characters such as Kinta, Rokuro, or Ludris, it can be molded by thought into whatever the user desires using only their imagination. This includes hidden cameras, cell phone interception devices, uniforms, hoverboards, and much more. While Momo and Okarun aren’t the primary users of Nanoskin, it currently makes up the entire Ayase Residence, meaning they’d more than likely have some in a pinch.
Cloak
Costume
The titular cloak in question plays a major part in Cloak’s power as it allows him to directly access the Darkforce Dimension. It was once discarded cloth found in a back alley that Tyrone had used to try and cover up the fact that he was all shadow, but that cloth would soon merge with Cloak and contain Cloak’s Darkforce energy within itself.
Otto Octavius’ Cybernetic Arms
Having found them while in battle against the police force of 2099, Cloak somehow managed to insert them into his darkness and telepathically control them just like how Otto usually would. This fight is the only time where Cloak uses these arms.
Dagger
Costume
Unlike Cloak’s costume, Dagger’s costume doesn’t have any real functionality behind it.
Flamethrower
One time, Dagger used a flamethrower during Dark X-Men. As far as we’re aware, this is like the only time she’s used it.
Rope
Dagger can use rope to restrain her enemies. But like the flamethrower, this is like the only time she’s used it.
Guns
She never likes to use guns but against killer robots it was morally ok!
Abilities
Momo
Psychokinesis
Momo’s most used ability is her psychokinesis. This power is manifested through a set of spiritual hands that allows Momo to interact with the aura of anything. She’s used this to grab and throw objects as big as a truck, grab onto things from a distance, swing around, grab moving objects to pull herself, or defend against attacks (though doing this can leave her hands damaged if she isn’t careful). Momo’s spiritual hands are not visible to people without awakened spiritual powers. Additionally, they can pass through solid objects to grab things on the other sides of it. She’s even done things like interacting with Aira’s internal organs to massage her heart and healing Vamola’s wounds.
Spiritual Awareness
Due to her awakening, Momo is capable of seeing and sensing the supernatural. Alongside her psychokinesis, she can also sense people’s “auras”. In Dandadan, all things have an aura, even inanimate objects. Momo can even sense auras that are blocked from normal view, although this is easier when she closes her eyes. Interacting with aura, as previously mentioned, can let Momo move objects around with her mind, but it can also allow Momo to sense people who are invisible. However, the downside to this is that being spiritually aware allows spirits to more easily detect you as well.
Power Nullification
By focusing on a person’s spiritual aura and interacting with it, Momo can suppress spirit based phenomena, though she mostly uses this to cancel out spiritual transformations, like with Okarun, Aira, and Zuma. Momo was also able to give Okarun control of his body back when directly possessed by Turbo Granny and also remove spiritual beings that are “hiding” in other bodies.
Life Manipulation
Not only can Momo’s psychic powers move and nullify spiritual powers, but she can also manipulate life via auras as well. Aura is described as a kind of “battery” for life, and can be transferred between beings. Momo acts as a conduit for transferring the aura of Acrobatic Silky to Aira, which brings Aira back to life. This process even allows Momo to see the memories of Acrobatic Silky and later, Vamola. After the process is over, Silky begins to disappear. It’s mentioned that losing your aura causes you to vanish and the world to become “as though you never existed.” This can be avoided if you find Nirvana before you fully disappear.
While Momo has never used the ability offensively (it seems to require some consent from the participants), it is a natural extension of her ability to manipulate auras and could theoretically be useful in certain situations.
Power of Words
While Momo’s spiritual powers were always incredible, her attacks can be amplified by giving them names. If you give an attack the name of something you believe to be truly powerful, those feelings will ensure that the blow will be incredibly devastating as a result.
Moe-Moe Tri Beam
Proving her cultured taste, Momo takes inspiration from Tenshinhan with her own Tri Beam attack! Named after the trademark of the maid café that Momo worked part-time for, Momo is capable of unleashing an extremely powerful attack by placing her hands in front of her in the shape of a heart while chanting “Moe Moe Tri-Beam!”
Whilst initially seeming like just some generic energy beam, the Tri Beam can be used to harm extradimensional beings that can’t be hurt through conventional means. Momo used it to harm Aliens hiding in another dimension, but the beam can also hurt traditional enemies as well. Though, if Momo is low on energy, the attack will be less effective.
Resistances
- Mind and Emotional Manipulation: By thinking of Ken Takakura and using her burgeoning psychic powers, Momo is able to resist the Serpoians’ attempts to induce arousal in her. It’s worth mentioning that later on she does fall prey to the psychic attacks from the Mongolian Death Worm, so this resistance is likely only to psychic abilities weaker than hers.
- Extreme Temperatures: Momo was inside of Acrobatic Silky next to her hair while it was on fire and she was immolating.
- Life Absorption, possible Death Infliction: Momo was swallowed by Acrobatic Silky and protected by her powers. Turbo Granny explains that this kills normal humans.
- BFR: Momo gets absorbed in the leader Globalist’s “Carved Space’, which sends the victim to a pocket dimension. Momo breaks out of the pocket space, as her powers are described to “transcend dimensions”.
Okarun
Half-Yokai Physiology
After being possessed and cursed by the yokai Turbo Granny, Okarun gained the ability to change into a half-yokai form. This form is described as being Turbo Granny’s own powers manifesting in Okarun. After Turbo Granny’s consciousness is removed from his body and placed in a Maneki-Neko doll, he gains full ownership of the abilities until he regains his testicles (Dandadan is a peak manga).
While more information on Okarun’s Turbo Granny form specifically can be found in the Forms section, having Turbo Granny’s power also gives Okarun a variety of half-yokai traits. Half-yokai can transform themselves at will and have higher than average strength and speed. Okarun maintained this athletic build even after Turbo Granny’s powers left his body. In addition, half-yokai are able to see and be seen by spiritual phenomena much easier than standard humans.
Also, for whatever reason Half-Yokai hybrids have a separate personality/attitude that emerges only in their yokai form. In Okarun’s case, his Turbo Granny form is very subdued and depressed. This yokai personally shares memories, knowledge, and continuity with Okarun, so it really isn’t a separate personality, but it does occur whenever he changes form. It’s never proven to be too much of a liability, though.
All-Out
Okarun’s signature attack when in his Turbo Granny form is an intense burst of speed that sends him rocketing forward. While Okarun’s standard speed in Turbo Granny form is already superior to most humans, tapping into her full potential causes Okarun to massively speed up. Turbo Granny claims that her top speed is 100 kilometres per hour, and that she can always maintain it no matter her direction or position. While it’s unclear if this is the same for Okarun (he may be faster), accessing her top speed at first made Okarun physically ill. As such, he’s dubbed this technique “All-Out” and can only use it twice in a confrontation. He typically uses it as a powerful tackle, but he can also use it as a “speed-up” while running. While he trained to remove the physical illness, the twice a fight limit remained for most of the series. For more information, please check out the Forms section.
Wire Transportation
One of Okarun’s abilities given to him by Turbo Granny is the ability to turn into electricity to travel across telephone wires. Thanks to Okarun’s very fast speed in his Turbo Granny form, he can get where he wants on a whim. Apparently, Okarun can even move faster than Turbo Granny’s standard top speed inside a wire. Okarun can also use the electricity of this form to wipe out beings like the alien exosuits in an instant.
While cursing Okarun, Turbo Granny was able to travel between Okarun and Momo’s cell phones. Okarun himself never replicates this specific feat, but it’s possible that Okarun could do it given that his Yokai form has Turbo Granny’s “full strength.”
Spiral Power
(Row Row Fight the Power!) Similar to the power of words, things shaped like spirals have much greater power than normal. It is through the power of moving in spirals that Okarun is capable of using his ability to move through wires, and he can also use spirals to greatly enhance the power of his All-Out charge attacks.
Astral Projection
Okarun is able to separate his spirit from his body and roam around as an astral projection. He was invisible to people who didn’t have control over their own spiritual power. Okarun can even travel through things like landline phones. However, Okarun is limited to a short period of time of how long he can stay in this form, because if the cord linking his spirit and his body is detached, Okarun can’t return to his body. Though it is worth mentioning Okarun spent around 3 days separated from his body.
One final thing to note about this ability is that Okarun only did this once by accident and has yet to do it again intentionally. So this ability is purely situational.
Resistances
- Extreme Temperatures: Okarun was inside of Acrobatic Silky next to her hair while it was on fire and she was immolating.
- Life Absorption or possibly Death Infliction: Okarun was swallowed by Acrobatic Silky and protected by his powers. Turbo Granny explains that this kills normal humans.
Cloak
Darkforce Physiology
As a result of the synthetic drugs injected into his system reacting with the anomalies created through his body chemistry with Dagger, Cloak wouldn’t just gain the power to control darkness but his biology would shift to where he would become the very darkness himself. Most of his body has been replaced with an intangible darkness that has been described as an “all-encompassing, all-consuming, never-ending eternity on night” that is “endless, eternal, hope-destroying, soul devouring”. This is a result of Cloak acting as a living portal to the Darkforce Dimension, the very dimension where the negative energy of darkforce resides.
Without a proper physical body, these powers would give Cloak quite a few unique quirks. He can only see people through the auras of light they give off, he has no need to eat (through normal means) or sleep, he cannot die from old age, and he can phase through and absorb any physical attacks that come his way… for the most part. When bullets are shot in his direction, Cloak’s darkness consumes them, when there’s a wall in his way, he can phase right through it, and even when things as big as cars, subway trains, and passenger airplanes, are closing in on him, Cloak can phase them through his body, although it’s worth noting that bigger targets require more effort in order for him to successfully phase. The stronger Cloak’s connection is to the Darkforce, the more effective he’ll become as a portal to the neverending darkness inside.
This isn’t to say that Cloak can’t ever assume a physical form as he would gain a physical body after his encounter with D’Spayre, now having the option to phase himself or will himself back into a more solidified form. Cloak has also stated his body is physical when he isn’t actively generating a portal, and his body can also be forced into a physical state if he uses too much of his power at once, leaving him vulnerable to physical attacks as he would be too weak to keep his darkness together. Of course this intangibility can also be bypassed by those who can interact with intangible beings but that doesn’t happen too often for Cloak luckily.
Another quirk that comes with being a, well, being of darkness is that Cloak needs to feed off the light, referred to as life force, of others in order to survive. Feeding off Dagger’s light allows Cloak to subside that hunger, but with Cloak’s constant connection to the darkforce and to all its horrors, the darkness ends up eating away at his sanity and constantly tries to be the one in control. It doesn’t just eat at his mind, though as it is often stated that constantly being connected to the darkforce and the monsters within it consumes Tyrone, literally eating him alive.
Extrasensory Perception
Cloak would still be able to detect the presence of Dr. Strange despite the latter using a spell of forgetfulness to make the world think that he was killed by the Beyonder. In fact, Cloak’s own memory had been warped alongside Dagger’s and the rest of society and yet he couldn’t shake off the feeling. His senses are good enough to the point where he could sense the darkness within others, with it sometimes acting like a homing beacon to hunt down targets, and in a priest’s attempt to exorcise his soul from across the world, he could still feel that attempt at soul stealing. He can even feel Dagger’s pain from afar and generally sense when she is nearby.
Darkness Manipulation
With these newfound powers, Cloak not only has full control over the darkness energy that makes up his body but he can summon darkness at will and extend his powers over entire areas to engulf them. This is mainly achieved through the use of his titular cloak, allowing Cloak to use it like a proper portal by either shooting out darkness directly from the darkforce dimension or forcing people into his cloak to enter that dimension themselves. Befitting for a power described as an “all-encompassing darkness” by the narrator, those on the receiving end of his darkness find themselves trapped in an endless area of darkness where they are subject to the other effects of the Darkforce.
If Cloak’s targets are too far spread out for him to engulf them in his cloak one-by-one, then he can simply unleash a flood of darkness across an entire area or through a concentrated flow directed at his targets. It’s proven useful when he’s wanted to catch fleeing killers, and all the effects of the darkness persist as walking through it feels like “wading through ink”. Surprisingly, even only a few seconds of contact with this darkness can sometimes leave normal human victims foaming at the mouth and unable to move for a period of time. That flooding of darkness can still be outsped by superhumans, such the case when Spider-Man could outswing the darkness before it got to him, but it can prove difficult to tell the difference between regular darkness and Cloak’s darkness until you’re already within Cloak’s reach.
Despite the many harmful effects that the darkforce can put on its victims, those same effects can be nullified with constant physical contact with Dagger as her light is strong enough to combat its effects. Cloak’s darkness can cover all of New York if left unchecked by Dagger’s light, and it can already cover multiple city blocks when Dagger was absent only for a while.
Cloak Manipulation
As an extension of Cloak’s control over darkness, he also has full telekinetic control of how his cloak maneuvers and spreads across the battlefield. Mentioned before in Cloak’s arsenal section, this cloak was simply a large rag that had the darkforce’s power modify it to become a proper portal, but after defeating D’Spayre, Cloak gained full control over his cloak and can manipulate it in a multitude of ways. Changing its size allows Cloak to capture larger targets such as groups of people, vehicles, or larger dinosaurs and manipulating his cloak like tendrils lets Cloak apprehend any target within his vicinity, including multiple people at once, or grab and tear down doors.
Flight
As Cloak’s powers started undergoing certain changes, he somehow gained the ability to fly because what can’t Cloak do? He can freely levitate and carry people through the sky without any real strain on his body.
Teleportation
By letting his cloak consume him and then itself, Cloak can shift around in the shadows and reappear anywhere he desires, even if his target area has physical barriers or is on the move. While this teleportation is usually reserved for shorter distances to get the jump on foes, Cloak has casually been able to teleport distances such as from New York to Machu Picchu within an instant. It does also have other side uses such as teleporting in and out of shadows which makes for easy spying and a seamless way to reach his destination. The only real downsides to his teleportation comes in the fact that too much temporal interference can disrupt the process and his accuracy can be put off if he’s currently messed up.
Furthermore, this teleportation can extend to anyone that is enveloped by his cloak, allowing Cloak to teleport others alongside himself, albeit it’s mostly done with Dagger since most other beings would fall victim to the effects of the dark force. It’s not impossible for Cloak to teleport other people as they can hold onto Dagger if they want to teleport with the duo but they do also need to be successfully engulfed by Cloak’s cloak.
Well… that’s how his powers were meant to be, later comics would retcon this for some reason as heroes would be able to teleport through Cloak’s darkness without feeling its effects. Even then the retcons contradict themselves as someone like Wolverine was only left puking after teleportation in 2000’s comics so interpret it how you will.
Battlefield Removal
Going back to what was said before, entering Cloak’s, well, cloak essentially acts like a direct portal to the Darkforce Dimension, a dimension that exists outside the multiverse as not only a constant source of darkness energy but as a deep dark realm filled with nightmares. Earlier comics would portray this dimension as simply a black void but as the comics fleshed out Cloak and Dagger, the Darkforce Dimension would also become a much more complex area where land and other lifeforms do exist inside of it.
That said, its innate properties remain consistent throughout comic runs as it will always appear as an endless dark void that not only exists without light sources but also absorbs the light out of any outside source that enters. Once someone is trapped in the dimension, whether it’d be physical targets or even astral forms that are brought in through Cloak’s cloak, they won’t usually be able to find an exit of any sort unless a light glows bright enough for them to follow, and since it’s mainly a dimension filled purely with darkness, attempting to attack it through conventional attacks is futile. However, that isn’t to say that it is impossible for super beings to escape as there’s been many instances of heroes and villains escaping the Darkforce.
- Spider-Man flailed about long enough to connect a blow with something solid, in this case Cloak’s chin, which let him find a way out
- Doctor Doom landed a hit on Predator, a monster that lives within Cloak’s darkforce, which caused Cloak to also feel the pain and forcefully eject Doom out of his darkness
- Thanos simply managed to brute force a way out thanks to the Infinity Gauntlet
- This guy managed to hit Predator with the lasers of a suit meant to replicate Cyclops’ optic laser which allowed him to fall back into the real world
- Carnage could pull himself out of the Darkforce Dimension by latching onto something solid in the real world
- Doppelganger proved difficult to keep within Cloak’s darkness due to how much it thrashes and writhes
- Due to the size and fury of Devil Dinosaur, Cloak not only passed out with the initial engulfment but he would be forced to eject the dinosaur later when he couldn’t hold it back any longer
- Mephisto’s demons could escape Cloak’s darkness as they had seen far bleaker with Mephisto’s shadows
Out of all these instances, either attacking Predator or thrashing about until a hit lands seems to be the most consistent way to escape Cloak’s darkness.
Momentum is kept when entering the Darkforce Dimension, even when freefalling into the dimension or driving a vehicle straight into it, and that momentum can be redirected into a different direction by Cloak to send those targets flying once he releases them. This even applies to Cloak engulfing criminals mid-attack and simply dropping them from high in the sky to their demise. It’s only made all the more easier when targets as big as cars can find themselves swallowed and spat out elsewhere, and with its especially big size, all sorts of monsters and demons live within the dimension (see Support for more info), monsters that Cloak chooses to ignore because even he’s accepted that the dimension is straight up weird. The dimension also happens to have pocket dimensions at the end of it where Cloak can trap someone even harder than before.
One of the more useful quirks of the Darkforce Dimension however is the fact that the superpowers of both tech and alien alike can be deactivated if someone were to be trapped inside, albeit this could be attributed to the fact that Cloak’s portal had been shut off prior to the Runaways finding themselves trapped.
Nightmare Inducement
& Illusions
One of the more deadly effects of Cloak’s darkforce is one that greatly befits Cloak’s strong desire to wreak vengeance on others. Once inside of Cloak’s Darkforce Dimension, the Predator comes out of the shadows and causes the target’s own individual nightmares to manifest inside of the cloak, forcing them to live through their greatest fears as those scenarios continue to form and act upon them, going as far as to summon entire hordes of people killed in the past by certain targets after those same targets. With fears being physically, mentally, and emotionally experienced as “inevitable reality”, these dark and hopeless outcomes are meant to force those with tainted souls to realize the consequences of their actions, projecting alternate futures that only seem absolute.
Once one is released from their prison of darkness, they’re usually filled with enough fear to absolutely chill their souls, incapacitate them, and prevent them from even uttering two coherent sentences. It may only seem like it works on those on the evil side of the spectrum, but even innocent targets can still be subject to that same terror, meaning that the effects occur regardless of their morality. Cloak can subtly manipulate the kinds of nightmares that people experience too as he prevented Wolverine from seeing visions of his future self, knowing that he wasn’t ready to see that fear manifested just yet.
Freezing Properties
Upon entering Cloak’s darkness, one finds a lingering freeze so cold that it’s been described as “being colder than any grave”, a darkness that’s “totally without warmth, without light, without hope”, a darkness that “chills their very souls” and literally feels like their soul is being pulled out of them. It may all seem like hyperbole but the freezing of people’s souls is something we see happen in real time often, and as a side effect, it can cleanse people of their crimes if their souls are chilled for long enough. Even the simple act of putting your hands in the darkness for a few moments can leave them frozen numb, working on both normal humans and super humans alike, including the likes of Spider-Man.
Sensory Nullification
Speaking of Spider-Man, Cloak’s darkness is, well, dark enough to where it can successfully mute/dull Spider-Man’s spider-sense every time he’s been trapped inside.
Vision Projection
In the case of every other person who enters Cloak’s darkness, they’ll only see an infinite black void, but when Dagger is inside, Cloak can project his own vision from outside of the dimension to let Dagger see what is happening in the real world. Since Cloak sees the people around him as auras of light due to the amount of light they give off, his projections appear as such and gives Dagger the chance to see events unfold while staying in a relatively safe place. Good people have auras that shine brightly while worse people have dimmer auras by comparison, allowing Cloak and Dagger to distinguish friend from foe. Any other person inside of Cloak’s darkness can also see these same projections but they have to maintain physical contact with Dagger or they’ll go crazy from the darkness’ usual effects.
Light Absorption &
Life Force Draining
Needing to feed on the light and heat of others to survive, Cloak tends to use his darkforce energy (and the powers from a certain demon, see Support) to absorb not only the light from the surrounding environment but the light and heat from his targets. Any form of light can find itself absorbed into the Darkforce Dimension but to satisfy Cloak’s hunger, he specifically needs to absorb enough “living light” into his body to the point that the demon within is content enough to not feed on innocent people. A more detailed explanation will be given in Dagger’s abilities but essentially, the living light that a person emanates is the equivalent to their lifeforce energy, and it’s the kind of energy that is needed to properly deal with Cloak’s hunger.
By draining this living light out of people, it drains their whole lifeforce and essentially kills them, whether Cloak wanted them dead or not. It is possible for victims to barely survive even when a majority of their living light is drained out of them, but in most cases, the monster that lives within Cloak’s darkness will be the one to have the final say. Even when the power was transferred to a different user for a short time, the cloak could instantly drain victims of their lifeforce in a near-instant. This absorption can be interrupted if Dagger is able to subside his hunger before a target’s living light and warmth is consumed or if Cloak is able to release his victims from his darkness through his own sheer willpower.
Besides living light and many other types of light, there have been more battle appropriate uses for light and heat absorption done by Cloak himself. Cloak has absorbed incoming lasers, absorbed incoming fire attacks, and he has spread his darkforce energy across entire rooms and sucked up all of their light, leaving his victims in total darkness and unable to see in front of them.
Amped Powers
Before we delve into Cloak’s amped powers, it’s important to emphasize that these powers are entirely non-standard and unachievable through normal means. These powers were used in a storyline where Cloak was slowly being amped in power to act as a conduit for an eldritch entity. Once those events were over, he’s never demonstrated such powers since and he’s definitely not used these powers in the past before. It’s solely being mentioned for completion’s sake.
That said, these powers are accessible through entering the Darkforce Dimension and can seemingly only be used in the dimension. Cloak can manipulate the landscape within the dimension, plunge his hand into people to heal wounds, and from his chest he can sprout a weird tentacle-like demon that could split Mr. Negative apart from Martin Li and consume its power.
Resistances
- Limited Self-Sustenance: As mentioned before, Cloak has no need to eat or sleep as a full-on being of darkforce. However, he does require the light of Dagger or the living light of his victims to keep his hunger in check as well as replenish his energy.
- Cold: Even the blistering cold of the North Pole doesn’t shake up Cloak.
- Limited Physical Attacks: Cloak’s non-physical nature allows him to bypass any normal physical attacks, albeit he can become susceptible to those attacks if he solidifies himself into a physical form.
- Poison: Poisonous gas has shown to have no effect on Cloak due to his unique physiology, and by shielding Dagger within his cloak, he can also protect her from those effects.
- Illusions: Cloak was unaffected by the illusions that Grey projects, managing to break out by knowing that the real Dagger wouldn’t act the way that Grey was acting. He would also manage to break out of the hallucinations that Ecstasy’s drug brought onto him as his subconscious hammered at him long enough to remind him of Dagger and wake up from the illusionary world in his mind.
- Life Force Draining: While depowered to his human self, Cloak managed to survive having his life force sucked out of him by those with powers similar to Dagger. In fact, draining Tyrone’s life force caused him to turn back into Cloak and gain all of his powers again.
Dagger
Lightforce Physiology
Opposing the energy that makes up Cloak’s entire body, Dagger’s body can naturally and continuously emit and control pure “living” light as an aftereffect of injected synthetic drugs reacting with anomalies created through her body chemistry with Cloak. What exactly is living light you may ask? Well, all living things are established to cast auras of light, with the auras of good-willed people glowing brighter while the auras of ill-willed people have a dimmer glow. No matter the kind of person however, it’s implied that the living light of a person is directly tied to the person’s lifeforce, and an aura that is barely perceptible fundamentally means that a person is on the cusp of dying.
Unlike all the auras that regular people give off, Dagger’s living light automatically shines the brightest as it’s established to have a purifying quality directly derived from Lightforce energy, a direct counterpart to the Darkforce that cleanses rather than corrupts. Unlike the Darkforce’s home dimension, all Lightforce energy comes directly from the lifeforce of people’s living light, and while it has no real effect on good people, malicious people will not only find themselves temporarily immobilized upon coming into contact with Lightforce energy, but it’ll illuminate every bit of their body down to the cellular level and cleanse them of their evil.
Besides cleansing evil, Dagger’s light can also strengthen souls when they’re at their lowest point and she usually uses it as a means to restore others back to their full strength physically and mentally. It can purge evil influences as strong as Knull’s and as possessive as spirits, temporarily cut off powerful evil influences from a possessed user, repair Cloak’s link to the Darkforce Dimension if it’s ever broken, shine bright enough to where it goes through your eyelids, disrupt the delicate balance in sophisticated technology which causes malfunction, and bring about a shock of awareness that helped Speedball reform into his usual self. It can even let Dagger magnetize to objects imbued with dark energy.
For other natural powers that come with being a Lightforce user, Dagger can always see the auras of others, detect souls, detect evil/impure energy within others, and she is naturally drawn to large sources of light, such as the time when she was led astray off a criminal’s trail due to sensing one of Doom’s big light columns from afar. She’ll also always be able to detect and locate Cloak’s presence even when he is hidden in shadow. With all the variety in Dagger’s lightforce powers, there do still exist downsides like how her light isn’t enough to light up dark areas that actively swallow light and how it isn’t able to work on those who don’t have a soul, especially when it comes to technology (electrocutions or full on circuitry burning can still be forced onto tech through her light daggers however).
Acrobatics
A long time before Dagger was ever captured by the scientists of Ellis Island, she got into dancing as a coping mechanism for having neglectful parents for the entirety of her childhood. Alongside her general athleticism, ballerina skills, and gymnastic knowhow from high school, those skills would easily transfer to her ability to fight in battle as she uses it to keep up in hand-to-hand fights, surprise others with her quick and agile movement, and dodge incoming attacks.
Light Manipulation
Being a constant source of living light extends to her being able to control this light however she sees fit. When she isn’t trying to bring evil to its knees, she’s been learning about the many useful applications her control over light has. Dagger’s body can will her entire body to glow brightly for a multitude of reasons such as to help Cloak spot her, to blind people and make her escape, to deal with an entire horde of vampires all at once, to shine bright enough to have her light cover the entirety of Manhattan which was currently entrapped in the Darkforce Dimension, to instinctively let out a unconcentrated burst of living light from every pore when she’s surprised by an attack, or to unleash massive blasts of light as a last resort attack that quickly drains her stamina.
Dagger naturally glows even when she’s angry, and if she wanted to, she could glow select parts of her body to light up dark areas, blind others and fill surrounding people with her light as a way to illuminate the emptiness in their lives (too bad they all got knocked out, rich people am I right?). Leaving a trail of light behind her lets Cloak and other allies follow her lead and she can hide herself by refracting her own light, turning her completely invisible to the normal human eye.
With enough focus, Dagger can shoot out beams of living light, solidify her light to make constructs (more on that later), use her light to grab targets, send her light through wires to blast those on the receiving end, had her light passed from one target to another like electricity, and even block and redirect sonic blasts with her light… somehow. She isn’t only restricted to the manipulation of her living light as she can also take control of other forms of light for her benefit such as lasers.
Lightforce Constructs
Daggers of light alone wouldn’t be enough to deal with the ever-growing threats of the Marvel universe so once her lightform was removed out of the equation, Dagger would learn to will her living light into all kinds of solid forms. She’s made living light swords, living light bows, living light spears, futuristic living light guns, living light chains that can restrain bigger monsters, smaller light shields to block bullets, a sturdy light forcefield that surrounds her body, forcefields that block incoming attacks, bigger light forcefields to hold off armies, swings for Dagger to think on, knight-like light armor along with a pair of dual swords, and a suit of armor resembling that of Iron Man’s. Spending time in the Hyborian age had already been pushing her constructs far beyond her presumed limit but now the only limit to Dagger’s light constructs is her own imagination.
Daggers of Light
Out of all the light constructs that Dagger has access to, she’ll always have a favorite that she’s been weaponizing ever since she got her powers: her daggers of light. By willing them into existence, Dagger’s titular daggers are either summoned at her fingertips and are ready to be thrown at her desired target or already flying towards that target. Once they’ve hit a living person, they’ll blaze through living flesh and reach their bloodstream, melting into it to cause a biophysical shock reaction that can temporarily paralyze a target and leave them feeling a numbing, freezing, death-like cold that also significantly weakens them physically.
Normal people take hours to recover from these effects and while superhumans like Spider-Man can recover quicker thanks to their recuperative powers, they’ll still be weakened regardless. The duration and potency of this freezing is implied to be controllable by Dagger but against those she sees as unjust, she isn’t hesitant to go all out unless they can help the duo. Those victims will wish that they were struck by normal daggers as these light daggers stab deeper and colder than any steel while also polluting their system to leave them weak and helpless. Not all is technically bad as these knives carry the purifying effects of her light into malicious people along with a bunch of other niche uses.
These daggers give off enough light to blind enemies, can be solidified to deflect projectiles, hone in on their targets (although Dagger has no control of her daggers after they’ve been released), track any specific target that Dagger has on her mind including Cloak, bypass protective barriers such as forcefields, create a beacon of light if thrown directly upwards, force people to confess their sins and tell the truth, have multiple daggers be shot all at once, and most importantly, give Cloak enough living light to temporarily satisfy his hunger. Granted a lot of these properties can be replicated by other powers but Dagger loves to look cool while fighting crime anyways, let her have this one. It’s not like she even needs to throw her daggers as she can just directly insert them into her targets through physical contact, hurting them all the same!
To keep in line with the fact that Dagger still has a lot to learn with her powers, her daggers do have some pretty glaring weaknesses. Blocking them with normal materials like aluminum or wood works way better than one may think as they’ll just… bounce right off, with the same issue occurring with other reflective objects like body armor (although Dagger has found workarounds for the issue). Those same daggers can dissipate upon contact with gaseous clouds, take up a lot of energy to summon, and most unfortunately, a target who has absolutely no doubt in their actions can shake off the effects of these light daggers altogether, most obviously shown when aura-farmer Doctor Doom nullified the effects by only believing that none of his actions are evil. If Doom likes it, the rest of the world will like it too!
Purification
While Cloak chooses to make people pay for their sins through trauma, Dagger opts to use her light to purify those who could potentially be saved from evil’s grasp. She has managed to purify radiation sickness, drug addiction, vampirism, demonic possession, and most importantly, the sins of bad guys that try to ruin innocent people’s lives. Anything from Dagger’s kit can achieve a purifying effect, whether it’d be the illumination of spread out light or concentrated light in the form of her daggers. The potency of purification depends on how evil the target is, so if Dagger were to illuminate an excess amount of her living light into someone used to engaging in dark dealings, that purification can cause them to go into complete shock and be unable to move for a good while. It can even burn through demons if enough light is filtered into their bodies.
Healing
Along with purifying others, Dagger can straight up heal her allies and any enemies that she thinks could be saved with the power of her holy and pure light. She can heal wounds as shallow as hand cuts in an instant, give dying people enough temporary light to seek the help they need, fully restore the energy of dying people, and she has the potential to heal people suffering from terminal illnesses while at full power, and everything she is able to purify is practically a kind of healing in of itself. As stated in Uncanny X-Men #513, “her healing gifts are more profound than her offensive powers”, which given how her lightforce daggers could heal any of her teammates in Marvel Rivals, the sentiment is consistent even across different continuities.
The only real downside to her healing is that by being so good at healing, Dagger completely purges infections and powers from others’ bodies but in return, that infection/power jumps to Dagger and gets into her system instead.
Lifeforce Manipulation/Absorption
Living light’s direct tie to the life forces of other people means that since Dagger can manipulate living light, she can also manipulate the lifeforces of others. In exchange for not cutting through people like butter, her light daggers absorb a portion of a target’s life force upon contact, and gaining that extra lifeforce energy in her pool of light means that she can directly transfer it to other people to bring them back to their full strength. Being a constant vessel of living light also means that she can fully restore the living light of people that previously had all of it sucked dry out of them, bringing them back to life as a part of her life’s goal to save innocent people rather than leave them to die. Even so, Dagger can also absorb the living light/life force out of someone through physical contact, and if the target is drained of their light too fast, they will incinerate themselves in a blast of light.
Self-Resurrection
Even when Dagger was literally at death’s fingertips, she was able to resurrect herself through the process of becoming a being of pure light due to Shriek’s interference, finding refuge within Cloak, and using the love between them to hang on until she could reform herself back to her normal body. Of course, she would need Cloak alive to fully resurrect herself.
Resistances
- Darkforce: A common thing across Cloak and Dagger comics is Dagger being one of few people to be resistant to the effects of the Darkforce Dimension even when staying in the darkness for long periods of time. This is mainly due to her giving off enough pure, living light to ward off those negative effects and nullify them altogether, meaning that her light should protect her from everything the Darkforce has shown to affect others, including…
- Freezing Temperatures
- Nightmare Inducement
- Sensory Nullification
- Lifeforce Draining (which speaking of…)
- Lifeforce Draining: On top of the resistance she’s had due to being in Cloak’s darkforce, Dagger could keep fighting despite having a portion of her lifeforce sucked out by Grey.
- Illusions: Dagger could fight back against Grey’s illusions in her dreams repeatedly despite the constant pressure put onto her.
Forms
Momo
Full Power Momo
In the first chapter/episode of Dandadan, when Momo’s memory of her grandmother and the Serpoian telekinesis awaken her own latent psychic abilities, she demonstrates a strong mastery of them. Momo later describes feeling “invincible” and like “whatever she imagined could become reality.” She says this level of power subsided and Seiko theorizes that it might be sealed away somehow and that Momo might be able to return to this level of power through training. As of this writing Momo has yet to regain this power level, so this form is unusable and mentioned solely for completion’s sake.
Small Momo
(Non-Standard)
After escaping the Danmara box, Momo is shrunk down into a smaller form as a result of eating the food from the Danmara world. In this form she is physically weaker, but her psychokinetic abilities are any weaker in this state. This form is non-standard, and is mentioned for the sake of completion. However, it is worth mentioning that physical changes to Momo’s body do not affect her telepathic abilities. The actual downside to this curse is that, if enough time passes, people won’t be able to see or hear her. Only those with extremely strong spiritual senses can acknowledge her.
Okarun
Turbo Granny Form
After being possessed by Turbo Granny, Okarun gained her power and could transform into a ghastly form based on her. Initially, he could only use this form when Turbo Granny cursed him, but after she accidentally left her power inside him, Okarun has been able to transform into Turbo Granny form at his own will.
In this form, Okarun’s strength and speed gets a massive boost. According to Turbo Granny herself, she’s fast enough to go up to 100 kmph, so Okarun must be capable of moving that fast. Maybe even faster, as Okarun points out after his wire riding. Okarun can also do other crazy things with his speed, like making his legs move like a helicopter to slow his descent or having his reflexes be so fast, he can cut through fingers faster than the eye can see. When it comes to strength while in the Turbo Granny form, Okarun is strong enough to effortlessly kick a hole through concrete and can singlehandedly move a giant parade float. Okarun also has an attack with this form that combines his speed and strength called All-Out, where he boosts his leg strength to move fast and hit hard with one big devastating attack, he basically becomes a human missile. (see more in Abilities)
Turbo Granny also has some other additional powers, like being able to sense spirits and eating food like curry can help rejuvenate Okarun to go into this form if he is far too weak.
Limit Breaker Form
Initially, Okarun was only able to go All-Out twice while in Turbo Granny form. But around the Danmara Arc, after surpassing his limit of two All-Outs to protect Momo, Okarun took on a new, far more animalistic form against ‘Brella Boy. This form is only seen briefly, and while it seems more feral than Okarun’s standard Turbo Granny, it does not appear to have any downsides besides tiring him out afterward.
Cloak
Nightmare-Amped Form
(Non-Standard)
During the comic run of Marvel Knights, Nightmare (the guy) would manage to take control of Cloak and use him as a sort of pathway to a dimension known as Nightmare (not the guy), a dimension of horror beyond imagination. Nightmare radiates his energy across Cloak’s Darkforce Dimension to turn it into a twisted version of New York City with residents made up from every person that has ever been consumed by Cloak’s darkness. All of this is done for the purpose of letting Nightmare break into the real world but it’s not like he’s the only one benefitting from this deal as Cloak also gains a few other powers such as tendrils of darkness and a strength boost along with a more aggressive personality.
Dagger
Empowered Form
When Cloak doesn’t keep Dagger’s excess living light in check through absorbing it, her body begins to overflow with continuous light as she is put into an empowered state that enhances her overall light potency, even forcing her awake if she happens to be knocked out. Unfortunately, being in this state means that she loses a lot of control over her light as she’s forced to drain the light out of everyone around her like how Cloak would usually do whenever he feeds on others’ light.
Given enough time, she can cause big explosions of light that fill up entire apartments, but if she wants a much safer way to access this empowered state, all she needs is a combination of fury and enough exposure to sunlight to put her at full power. With a newfound blazing light in her body, her light daggers are now red-hot as they go through a target (armor, organs and all) and set their insides ablaze, being potent enough to cause Silvermane’s circuitry to burn out and kill him.
Cloak & Dagger
Swapped Forms
(Non-Standard)
Cloak and Dagger have always been associated with their unique yet intertwining powers of light and dark, but on more than one occasion they’ve had their powers forcefully swapped between each other through a powerful third party.
When D’Spayre went to swap Cloak and Dagger’s powers, he did so by ejecting their souls out of their original body and inserting them into alternate versions of them created within an astral realm. These alternate versions of Cloak and Dagger were what Tyrone and Tandy were meant to become had D’Spayre not interfered with their backstory, giving Tandy the powers of the Darkforce while also giving Tyrone the powers of the Lightforce. Taking on these new forms, the duo would briefly fight with these swapped powers and even use some new abilities despite basically having the same powerset.
Tyrone, now having Lightforce powers, could shoot powerful light blasts, move at the speed of light, refract any projectiles that come his way, create light manacles to restrain foes, and directly steals light from a target’s eyes. Tandy, now having Darkforce powers, could solidify her darkness to wedge a path forward without harm, shoot out bolts of Darkforce energy, and has a greater control over her cloak. Unfortunately, D’Spayre would rip these powers away from them soon after and it’s implied that Cloak and Dagger only had these swapped forms in the astral realm so it’s incredibly non-standard even if it is an essential part to their story.
When Mr. Negative swapped Cloak and Dagger’s power the first time, he would corrupt Tandy’s light with Darkforce energy, forcing her into a state where she was unleashing tons of Darkforce energy but had no way to control it. Needing to feed off living light, Mr. Negative would then give Tyrone the Lightforce energy needed to quell that hunger and restore Tandy back to a more manageable state. They would now have their powers exchanged for a good amount of time as nothing major would change about their powers besides the fact that they swapped energies. Once Spider-Man had them both injected with a special antidote by Dr. Yao, they would revert back to normal.
When Mr. Negative went to swap Cloak and Dagger’s powers the second time around, he first swapped Dagger’s Lightforce to Darkforce to try and mind control her but it would backfire as Dagger would shake off the effects after already having been mind-controlled before. Dagger would only gain a slight boost in strength and the ability to shoot out Darkforce energy like how she could use her Lightforce energy before she soon lost her Darkforce energy afterwards and fainted. She would then gain those same powers again later, forcefully opening a portal to the Darkforce with a conjured blade and continue using those powers up to when she kissed Ty and gave him his Lightforce energy. Ty’s cloak would turn white as he would only use his Lightforce powers to close the Darkforce portal on The Devourer, causing it to be split apart as its body parts fly across the city. They would both revert to their normal selves immediately after.
Support
Momo & Okarun
Maneki-Neko Turbo Granny
The spirit that lived in the Shono City tunnel that stole Okarun’s balls. After being found in and removed from Okarun’s body, she moved into the body of a Maneki-Neko (Lucky cat) doll. After making a deal with the heroes, she agrees to help Okarun get his balls back in exchange for getting her powers back. Turbo Granny typically hangs out in Momo’s bag. She’s generally useless in a physical confrontation, but she does bring two big advantages to team Momokarun in fights. One is that, as a senior yokai, she has a lot of knowledge about yokai and spirits and can often offer advice and useful information about the monsters the heroes face.
The second is much more important, though. The vessel that Turbo Granny is inhabiting is very lucky. As such, her presence in a fight can cause unlikely events to happen. Even events that are almost impossible become certain to happen once she appears. However, Turbo Granny cannot consciously control this ability, nor can she choose who gets it, as even an enemy could benefit from her absurd luck.
Turbo Granny did eventually regain her powers, but only the Maneki-Neko form will be used in this analysis. At the time of writing, she has not returned since leaving after reobtaining her powers. However, as her presence is iconic to the Kintama Hunt story arc and to Dandadan as a whole, she is included as support here. For more information, see Before The Verdict.
Cloak & Dagger
Predator
You may have wondered as you read through Cloak’s ability sections, why does Cloak have such a hunger for living light anyways? Well, the answer to that question would come in the form of a demon living in the Darkforce Dimension, hiding within the shadows and only appearing when he has yet another person to feed on: Predator. Yes, his name is literally Predator, and not of the cool Yautja kind.
Predator doesn’t inherently belong to Cloak and he certainly is more of an enemy than ally to Cloak and Dagger but as a powerful shapeshifting demon that reigns over his home dimension as king for eons, he would choose Cloak as his vessel after Tyrone had turned into a living gateway to the dimension.
He was initially planning to be less forgiving to Tyrone for intruding onto his territory but after Dagger had fed Cloak her living light to satiate his hunger, Predator spared Cloak and decided to use him as a vessel to continuously nourish himself. This is usually done through Cloak trapping people in the Darkforce Dimension to which Predator then comes out of the shadows and directly absorbs their lifeforce through physical contact, essentially giving the two a parasitic relationship (that only benefits Predator of course) without Cloak even knowing of Predator’s existence at first.
Predator can decide to jump to and forcefully transfer Cloak’s Darkforce powers to a new vessel if he believes they can do a more efficient job of collecting living light, such the case when he did so with Ecstasy, but considering that he’s now weakened thanks to the Lord of Light (Dagger’s father) and his first attempt was subdued by Doctor Strange, he hasn’t done so since. It’s a good thing that he has simply summoned the spirit of Jack The Ripper through Cloak’s darkness to do his bidding and kill people with his psychic light-draining blade.
Predator even acts on his own when Cloak is unable to, although he’ll only come out of the Darkforce Dimension if a source of living light shines bright enough in the real world to get his attention. On an unrelated note, Predator especially hates it when beings without living light enter the Darkforce Dimension so he’ll just go and zap them with lightning and make them blow up like how he treated this entire robot army. He also just has a bunch of other powers described in his own section in a Marvel encyclopedia centered around fear, such as a long lifespan, enhanced strength and durability, complete control over the darkness, teleportation to wherever he wants in the dimension, tapping into the minds of others to bring about nightmares, and black magic that creates scrying energy globes and traps souls on their way to hell. Considering that he can only exist on Earth when surrounded by other Darkforce along with the fact that he’s weak against concentrated light and bio-energy attacks, Cloak and Dagger were lucky to have continuously kept him trapped in the Darkforce Dimension.
Other Darkforce Monsters
Besides the aforementioned Predator, the Darkforce is also home to a bunch of other monsters and demons of all shapes and sizes. Some of the population includes flying demons, giant sandworms that will eat you whole, big ugly vampire shrimps that aren’t afraid to eat you alive, bat-like monsters that can drag you away to make you their next meal, furry flying beasts, and other monsters beyond one’s imagination. It’s once again worth stating that these monsters are not on Cloak or Dagger’s side so these monsters are more of a hindrance to them than anything.

Scaling
Momo & Okarun
Half-Yokai Humans
Okarun isn’t the only half-human, half-yokai in the series. Plenty of other humans either fuse with, are possessed by, or otherwise receive their powers from yokai. These include major characters like Aira and Jiji, as well as more recent additions like Rin, Unji Zuma, and Hase. As all of these characters share power sources with Okarun, Momo and him should scale to them. Okarun regularly battles and defeats Jiji in his Evil Eye form as an example.
Aira has…
- Survived a punch from Kaiju Vamola while using her Silky form
- Used her Silky Form’s hair to envelop Kaiju Vamola
- Survived getting shot by a railgun and crashing through a house, only to get back up and dodge another shot while in her Silky form
- Survived getting shot by a railgun, electrocuted, and having a barrage of missiles blasted at her that the explosions encompassed a city block, only for her to use her Silky hair and make a stealthy getaway with Jiji in tow
- Forced her way through an electrically charged forcefield using her Silky Form’s hair
Jiji has…
- Dodged railgun fire without being in Evil Eye
- Blocked an electric attacked from the Mongolian Death Worm after it was fired with Evil Eye
- Intercepted a Particle Beam and later dodged one
- Matched a Particle Beam in speed with his Evil Gun (0.9c)
- Survived an explosion that propels them back, getting right back up afterwards
- Split an alien exosuit in half with one punch
- Kicked a massive shark to the moon while using Evil Eye (9.84 – 23.28 Kilotons of TNT)
Rin has…
Unji Zuma has…
- Destroyed a knight in Danmara while in his half-yokai form
- Survived being kicked hard enough into a castle wall by Okarun to make a crater, only being knocked out afterwards
Hase has…
- Broken up a nanoskin armor (Can’t believe this fraud has as many feats as Rin)
Spirits, Yokai,
& Mediums
Dandadan is split up into two halves: the scientific and the spiritual. While aliens may exist, ghosts and yokai are the movers and shakers of the world and both of the leads’ powers come from spiritual sources. As such, Momo and Okarun should scale to a lot of the feats performed by ghosts, as they generally defeat these ghosts (with the exception of Reiko). Also Seiko is here too because there wasn’t a better place for her lol.
Turbo Granny has…
Seiko Ayase has…
- Made a sandbag fly into the air with a single bat swing using the power of words
- Sustained a prolonged beating from the Minotaur
Acrobatic Silky has…
Reiko has…
Danmara Box & Fairy-Tale Card have…
- Knights that break down massive stone castle walls
- Shot out lightning that arcs everywhere when they were both destroyed
Aliens, Cryptids,
& Other Phenomenon
The other half of Dandadan’s world is science fiction and conspiratorial. Cryptids, conspiracies, and aliens are all too real in the world of Dandadan. While their presence is much rarer on Earth than spirits (Okarun formulates that spirits play a natural defensive role against alien invasion), both Vamola and Kinta get their powers from extraterrestrial sources and aliens & cryptids were the first villains defeated by Momo & Okarun. Due to their prominence, it should be fine to scale the Dandadan gang to these aliens.
Rokuro has…
Mister Shrimp has…
- Mantis Shrimps punch at 80 kmph, and Mister Shrimp is as strong as them at minimum
- Shrimp’s power becomes 24 times stronger when they shapeshift and 10 times stronger underwater. With that, they punch a Mantis Exosuit Alien to death with a single Jet Punch
The Mongolian Death Worm has…
The Kur have…
- Had a mantis exosuit alien dodge a railgun blast from a sniper exosuit alien
- Had a jet booster space exosuit alien be fast enough to dodge rapid gunfire from an alien mech
- Had their space carving exosuit alien lift up Tokyo Skytree while controlling Vamola’s Kaiju mech
Cloak & Dagger
Other Street Tier Heroes
Cloak and Dagger have been on the streets for a good while now and during that time, they’ve had run-ins with many other heroes who also battled scum on the street. Considering the fact that Cloak and Dagger can not only keep up with their peers but also fight them or/and their enemies on an equal footing, it makes sense that they are comparable to the feats performed by them.
Black Widow has…
- Been knocked out but still survived a rocket launcher to the face
- Ducked under incoming missiles alongside Dagger
Punisher has…
- Withstood the gauntlet blasts of Shocker which were able to create 10-mile long earthquakes (924.007 tons of TNT)
Deadpool has…
- Survived a punch that caused an island-sized explosion without needing to regenerate too much (182.1 – 849.6 tons of TNT)
- Been blasted into a plane via explosion
- Lived after being blasted by a satellite laser
Wolverine has…
- Wolverine endured blasts from the Black Shadow, a mutant superpower that can annihilate entire city blocks (140.74 – 465.6 tons of TNT)
- Wolverine avoided, dodged & intercepted Cyclop’s beams, which move at the speed of light (1.49x FTL)
- Wolverine knocked down Domina, who claimed to be strong enough to move mountains (1.6 kilotons of TNT)
Other street tiers:
- Moon Knight avoided lasers from the Master of Illumination, & reacted fast enough to deflect one of them (44.2% Speed of Light)
- Hawkeye & Black Panther react to a falling girder within a supposed microsecond
- Johnny Blaze (the normal guy, not Ghost Rider) dodged a beam of light
- Without the Super Soldier Serum, Steve Rogers survived the blast impact of an explosion from afar
Miscellaneous Characters
A bunch of other random characters that Cloak and Dagger should scale to, whether it’d be through physical combat or the association of similar enough powers. Cloak and Dagger have defeated Silvermane as an example (See Verdicts)
Silvermane has…
- Lifted a big piece of machinery off the ground and thrown it
- Crashed through a brick wall
- Chucked a steel girder
- Kept up with a casual Spider-Man in strength and speed
- Spider-Man survived attacks from Wayeb’, who made a blizzard that covered Manhattan (102-650 Kilotons of TNT) (Debatable, See Before the Verdicts)
- Beat up Spider-Man in his symbiote suit
Cloak’s impersonator has…
- Taken drugs that seemingly let him replicate Cloak’s powers
- Held up Luke Cage in the air
- Thrown Luke Cage and Spider-Woman out the window
- Defeated Dagger
Grey has…
Ecstasy has…
Weaknesses
Momo & Okarun
While a really good pair when it comes to dealing with the abnormal, Momo and Okarun aren’t perfect. They do have a bit of a tendency to bicker mid-fight. Momo’s no-nonsense attitude can make her lose her temper and is prone to lashing out. When it comes to their abilities, while Momo’s psychic powers are versatile, they are still tied to her general sense of touch, meaning she can still feel strain or pain like normal hands can. If an enemy breaks free of her grip or if her psychic arms are struck with a strong attack, Momo’s actual arms will feel the pain and she will be unable to manifest her powers for a period of time. Momo has also admitted that she can’t really do a whole lot on her own unless Okarun comes to the rescue. Also, during a single encounter, Momo can only use the Tri Beam twice. This is due to it becoming weak due to Momo burning out on power. It also has a short range.
As for Okarun, his Turbo Granny form is effective, but it doesn’t work everywhere. He can’t use it to swim underwater since Turbo Granny herself never possessed the ability to swim. Initially, Okarun could only go All-Out twice in a fight, but since then he has overcome this limit, though if he runs on Limit Breaker form for too long, it’s possible the limit could resurface. While traveling through wires, Okarun is vulnerable to the wire being cut or being repelled by magnetic waves. Additionally, nanoskin is restricted by how much there is and can’t repair or construct complex structures without an ample supply of it.
Auras in Dandadan are also somewhat vulnerable. Auras are the life force of a person, and their depletion means death. It’s even more than that, though, as failing to find emotional closure after the depletion of the Aura can cause you to fade out of existence. Spiritually sensitive auras are also more likely to be seen by spirits.
Cloak & Dagger
It can’t be denied that Cloak and Dagger have accomplished a lot ever since they were introduced in 1982 but as teenagers who were practically forced into becoming superheroes, a lot of flaws have sprung up in the multitude of years that they’ve been fighting crime. In fact, to better organize an extensive list of notable weaknesses, we’ll sort them into bullet points to make it easier to follow.
Personal Flaws (note that all of these aren’t battle applicable but will still be mentioned out of interest in these characters):
- Cloak and Dagger are often too dedicated to the causes they fight for to care about themselves
- In earlier comics, Cloak is often the one taking charge and compelling Dagger to continue fighting for the lives of the innocent even when she wants to slow down and rest
- Cloak is especially attached to Dagger, both because of his love for her but also for the living light that he relies on to maintain his appetite, so he’ll do everything in his power to make sure Dagger never leaves him
- This does subside by quite a margin in later comics however
- They both have been outsmarted before in the past, such as when Norman tricked them into thinking he planted a device inside Cloak that could turn him inside out when in truth it was a device connected to other distant mines, thus they seemingly had no choice but to be swayed into joining his team.
- Cloak tries his best to not consume the living light of innocent people which can work against him in instances where he’s in trouble
Cloak’s Vulnerabilities In His Powers:
- As much of an amazing superhero Cloak is, one of his major weaknesses can not only become an obstacle for himself but it can also be a hassle for others. The hunger that Cloak often feels for living light has been quite the issue over Cloak’s entire comic run due to Predator’s influence.
- As a being of darkness, he must feed on the living light of others to satisfy his soul’s cravings
- It proves difficult to resist satisfying himself through feeding on others’ light
- It takes all of Cloak’s willpower to refuse the demand of his hunger when he had already begun feeding on others
- Cloak’s hunger can get greedy and deny eating the light of more tainted souls in favor of the light of those with brighter souls (aka people that are morally better)
- Can lose his concentration due to the effects of his hunger
- While feasting on living light strengthens Cloak, the horror of it all hammers at his soul which hurts his sanity
- When Cloak is under the effects of his hunger, his teleportation accuracy isn’t as good
- Dagger’s light is needed to constantly keep this hunger in check, but leaving that hunger unchecked even for a while can cause Cloak’s darkness to act on its own accord, having darkness spread across a city-wide range if he isn’t careful
- As Cloak grows weak, the darkness grows stronger, and it seeks to feed on its own volition
- Cloak can still have his presence felt even when hiding in shadow
- Removing his cloak can tear out Cloak’s connection to the Darkforce Dimension, although it can be brought back through Dagger’s light
- This can also be interpreted as an outlier as this has never happened in any other comic
- Cloak can’t teleport inside of the Darkforce because the Darkforce is his door
- Should Cloak travel too far with a target by carrying them through his darkness, even Dagger’s light isn’t enough to shield from its memory-mixing effects
- Due to Cloak’s void essentially being a giant echo chamber, any sound-based attacks will be greatly magnified when shot inside which can hurt Cloak
- Although Cloak can absorb fire by itself, flaming spears can pierce Cloak’s darkness by taking advantage of their innate property to sear shadow like napalm melting flesh
- A light beam with a high enough intensity can leave Cloak stunned
- If Dagger is dead, Cloak will experience periods of dizziness and weakness
Dagger’s Vulnerabilities In Her Powers:
- Dagger’s knives become feeble and slower when Cloak is hurt, causing her power to be halved until she can get enough exposure to light to bring her back to full power
- By accidently absorbing Silverman’s life force as she drove it out of his body, she ended up making a psychic link between them, and now Silverman tries to find Dagger and retrieve his life force back. All the while it drains Dagger of light which weakens her and leaves her with no light to give to Cloak which causes other complications.
- She can have her light absorbed out of her by a capable enough foe
- Her powers can’t affect animals
- Dagger needs Cloak in order for him to absorb his excess living light as she would burn out from continuously producing it otherwise
- Continuously using her light without rest or storing it without releasing puts Dagger in a state of weakness and can eventually kill Dagger
- If someone were to tap into the same Lightforce power that Dagger utilizes, Dagger won’t be able to do any damage to them
- Dagger’s light daggers have no real effect of Lightman who is also utilizing living light to boost his own power
- Mr. Negative created monsters out of Lightforce, and Dagger is unable to hurt them with her attacks as these Lightforce monsters and her attacks essentially act like “having two magnets facing the same way”, meaning that her attacks bounce off of them
Cloak’s Lack of Resistances:
- Outer Space: Cloak would be affected by the lack of oxygen in outer space as it had severely weakened him to the point of him needing to escape into the Darkforce Dimension to survive.
- Spiritual Conjuring and Enclosement: Cloak would be forcefully summoned by Lamar Plotnick’s magic and he would be unable to leave the summoning circle that he was, well, summoned on.
- Infection: Even Cloak’s darkness can’t contain this infectious zombie.
- Corruption: Cloak would later be a victim of Mr. Negative’s corruption powers.
- Mind Manipulation: His memories of the last 24 hours would be erased by The Pride. Ecstasy would also inject him with a drug that caused him to hallucinate in his own dream world for a long while, albeit it should be noted that Cloak didn’t have access to his powers by this point.
- Possession: He would also be possessed by a demon hiding within his darkness, a demon that used his body to go after other heroes.
- Morality Manipulation: His sense of morality would be changed off screen by Toomes.
- (Biological) Power Nullification: Cloak would have his power nullified twice via the guns of this anti-mutant organization.
- (Biological) Power Stealing: His powers would be stolen by a pair of mutants who had been subjected to the same drug as them, leaving him weak in his human state.
- Forced Astral Projection: D’Spayre would force Cloak into his astral projection state as he could only watch past events unfold before him without interference.
Dagger’s Lack of Resistances:
- Corruption: Mr. Negative would be able to corrupt Dagger with a touch and she couldn’t revert back on her own accord. She would also be corrupted by Night’s shadow and have her pure light converted to black light.
- Mind Manipulation: Mr. Negative was able to mess with Dagger’s mind hard enough to where the distorted reality he created in her head appeared real to her. Her memories have also been erased by outside forces like The Pride and Night.
- Hypnosis: She’s been hypnotized by a demon who wanted to make her his bride.
- Infection: Dagger immediately falls to the effects of this infectious zombie. She also got infected with vampirism when she tried to save Yelena Baloney from her curse, although she can counter it by purifying herself hard enough.
- Morality Manipulation: Rather than be fully mind controlled, their sense of morality was changed by Toomes so that their sense of what “felt right” would align with Toomes’ goal.
- Sleep: Dagger was forcefully put to sleep through the reality warping of Unusual.
- (Biological) Power Nullification: Dagger’s power would be nullified via the guns of this anti-mutant organization.
- (Biological) Power Stealing: Her powers would be stolen by a pair of mutants who had been subjected to the same drug as them, leaving her weak in her human state.
- Forced Astral Projection: D’Spayre would force Dagger into her astral projection state, leaving Dagger unable to interfere with the past events unfolding before her.
Before The Verdicts
Momo & Okarun
Kintama Hunt VS Kozuka Knives
To those of you caught up with the Dandadan manga, some of the things covered in the blog might seem a bit strange. Namely, we’re mixing elements from both the current saga and the first saga. The current major story arc in Dandadan is often called the “Kozuka Knives Saga.” It’s very different from the “Kintama Hunt Saga,” which comprises all the normal story beats and arcs you think of when you think of Dandadan with Okarun looking for his missing balls. In Kozuka Knives, Okarun no longer has Turbo Granny’s Powers but has his balls, Turbo Granny has left the main cast, and Momo has become tiny. All of these things have proven to be longer lasting than anyone initially thought, resulting in basically two different status quos – One for the current arc, and the ones from the first Saga, Kintama Hunt.
The Kintama Hunt status quo is undoubtedly the more popular of the two – it’s the one the current anime is covering, after all. It’s unclear if things will ever move back to being more similar to the first saga, but it is undoubtedly the one more people are familiar with. We didn’t want to totally cut out Kozuka Knives entirely, though, as Momo and Okarun are still active combatants and there’s feats in it they should still scale to. Also, while Okarun’s status quo changes are looking to be more long lived, one of the key plot points of Kozuka Knives is returning Momo back to normal height. It’s safe to say things will get back to normal for Momo soon enough. For Okarun, though, we’re not sure how long this will last (he literally got a new weapon during this blog’s production that he hasn’t even used yet). So we’re gonna try our best to include material from both sagas, but with a preference to the first since there’s more content to actually analyze there.
In simple terms, we’re focusing more on the Kintama Hunt powers and equipment for Momo and Okarun, but including some of the Kozuka Knives content as it is still part of the main Dandadan series and could impact the debate. Technically some of this stuff has not been used side-by-side in canon, but it is our opinion that this isn’t massively out of the realm of possibility, as some of the Kozuki Knives stuff (like Nanoskin) was well precedented in the Kintama Hunt material. We can’t predict the future, but we hope to offer a pretty comprehensive overview of abilities.
Turbo Granny’s Top Speed
Speed caps are nothing new in the realm of Versus Debating, and Dandadan has one of its own. Turbo Granny has a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour, and is unique in that she can use this speed regardless of her direction or position. That’s pretty neat, and obviously this applies to Okarun’s Turbo Granny form as well. But is this the fastest Okarun can go? Turbo Granny thinks so, but Okarun seems to disagree. In his spirit form, Okarun moves through the telephone lines and points out that it’s faster than Turbo Granny’s stated top speed. How much faster? Well, 270,000 kilometers per second is the standard speed for electricity in a wire. Doesn’t that apply to just movement, or just his spirit form? Not really. Okarun travels through wires in his Turbo Granny form and as electricity in combat as well.
This is consistent with various other high speed feats in Dandadan that are various levels above the 100 kmph speed cap. Aira has reacted to missiles before and Okarun has just dodged them. Missiles are generally above 1000 kmph. Rokuro uses a “high energy particle beam” in the fight against Brella Boy, and the Kur also use energy beam attacks. Particle beams move at 0.9 times the speed of light. Finally, Turbo Granny herself travels between cell phones in the very first chapter, and cell phone waves move at the speed of light. While your mileage may vary on the legitimacy of how relativistic these Dandadan speed feats are, it’s plain to see that there are plenty of Dandadan speed feats performed by Okarun or other characters in his ballpark that far exceed the given 100 kmph speed cap.
Jiji carrying Dandandan
on his shoulders
(AKA Particle Beams)
During the Space Globalist Arc, Jiji intercepts an energy beam with his own attack in order to protect Aira. He later dodges these beams and matches one in speed with his Evil Gun (see scaling section). These beams are Electromagnetic Particle Beams. The globalists stole everything from the Serponians (most importantly technology), which includes their Particles Beam weaponry. This is not only an important plot point given that it’s Rokuro’ entire motivation (to destroy the stolen data/tech) in the Space Globalist Arc but it’s a little silly to assume the space conquering globalists who are more advanced than the Serpos just have worse technology. While it’s true these lasers produce both force and explode meaning they can’t be light, they do however meet the properties of particle beams. Jiji consistently matches them in speed and the Globalists in turn can react to Jiji’s attacks.
Cloak & Dagger
Darkforce Vortexes
Of the most infamous feats in recent marvel history came during the blood hunt event when Cloak and several other Darkforce users blotted out the sun, which was calculated to require anything from 3 gigatons to over 110 exatons of TNT. This would easily be the biggest buff marvel street tiers could possibly get… if it was valid. Sadly it’s not. In fact the problems start to rear their head with this feat almost immediately. For starters the spell itself was started by Varnae, using a Darkhold ritual that Doom needed all of the Strange Academy students and the power of the sorcerer supreme to help reverse. Also something Wanda Maximoff herself believed she’d be unable to close. To put it bluntly means Cloak was heavily amped while performing this feat as such levels of power are completely beyond him typical making it unusable however it gets worse, see just being in this state left cloak in a coma for not just Blood Hunt but it’s sequel series Blood Hunters (Highly recommend btw) even after the portal closed.
This is to say, not only was he amped, he was also incapacitated by the feat for quite awhile in universe. Also either way it’d be an outlier.
Wayeb’s Blizzard
During the events of issue 555-557 of the Amazing Spider-Man run, Peter encountered a Mayan god named Wayeb’. Wayeb’ had been summoned by an insane man named Benjamin Rabin and attacked Spider-Man before leaving to find his sacrifice. Wayeb’ was weakened in this encounter, but still had enough power to create a massive blizzard that covered all of Manhattan. Peter was able to take a few hits from Wayeb’ before the god powered up via Rabin’s sacrifices. At that point, even a single hit from Wayeb’ had the potential of killing Spider-Man.
Years later Rabin used Wayeb’s power to make a similar blizzard, and Spider-Man could trade blows with him until Ms. Marvel sacrificed herself to end Rabin’s threat. As such we are treating Wyeb’s casual output (the blizzard feat) as Peter’s limit. Wayeb’ has a “feat” where after Paul and Mary Jane used a portal to cut him in half (Don’t ask), and his two halves impacted somewhere in Pennsylvania, causing two massive explosions. Given Wayeb could kill Peter easily at its full power, Spider-Man does not scale to these explosions. As for Cloak and Dagger scaling to Spider-Man, see the Verdicts.

Momo & Okarun
Stats
So first off, let’s get it out of the way that both Momo and Okarun would logically scale to each other, same with Cloak and Dagger, since they are always around equal to each other and fight the same threats. So first, we will start with their strength and durability.
Starting with Momo and Okarun’s own raw power, their best feat physically comes from Momo using her psychic powers, in which she uses the mech’s arms to lift Vamola in kaiju form enveloped by Aira’s hair into the sky, spin it around, and slam it down creating a crater. This feat gets approximately anywhere from 372.04 Tons of TNT – 1.405 Kilotons of TNT. However, both Momo and Okarun have fought and/or fought with many other characters from the series, and would logically scale to them. The best feat overall that Momo and Okarun would scale to is when Jiji kicked a massive shark to the moon while using Evil Eye, which gets anywhere from 9.84 Kilotons of TNT – 23.28 Kilotons of TNT.
Moving on to Cloak and Dagger, both of them also have some decent feats on their own. Cloak was able to survive an explosion from a suicide bomber, which gets from around 0.181 – 1.04 Tons of TNT. The best physical feat either of them has though is when Dagger lit up all of Manhattan, which gets to 1.76 Tons of TNT. Though both Cloak and Dagger can get much higher by scaling to other characters from the Marvel Universe. Cloak and Dagger have fought many other street tier characters, so they would logically scale to a lot of them. They also have killed Silvermane in the past, who consistently was shown manhandling Spider-Man early in his career. Spider-man later on was shown to be durable enough to take hits from Wayeb’, who could create a blizzard across Manhattan worth over 600 Kilotons of TNT. The issue here is twofold, Dagger specifically short circuited Silvermane’s circuits (something she regularly does). Silvermane regularly manhandles Dagger and Cloak physically. The other issue is Spider-Man is shown to get stronger as time passes, making it questionable if Silverman even scales to Wayeb’ in the first place.
The best feat they would scale to is when Wolverine knocked down Domina, who claimed they were strong enough to move mountains. This feat would get 1.6 Kilotons of TNT. However, this is nowhere near close to Momo and Okarun’s best. Even with the low end of Jiji’s feat, Momo and Okarun would be 6.15 times stronger than Cloak and Dagger. With the high end, it would be 14.55 times stronger. Momo and Okarun clearly take strength.
Next is speed. Starting with Momo and Okarun, Okarun can travel through telephone wires as electricity to travel across the world. He travels at relativistic speeds in this manner and learns how to use this speed in combat. Electricity in telephone wires travels at 0.9c (90 percent the Speed of Light). For some consistency, Jiji is shown reacting consistently to High Output Particle Beams, even matching the speed of the beam with his Evil Gun (which at bare minimum would also be 0.9c.). Characters have reacted to the Evil Gun as well. Relativistic is consistent for Momo and Okarun.
Next for Cloak and Dagger, Dagger’s light daggers can move fast enough to fly to space, which gets around Mach 3,444. Impressive, but both Cloak and Dagger can scale to far better speed feats. Such as Moon Knight avoiding lasers from the Master of Illumination and reacting fast enough to deflect one of them which gets 44.2% the Speed of Light, and Wolverine avoiding and intercepting Cyclop’s beams, which gets to 1.49x FTL. This would make Cloak and Dagger a little faster than Momo and Okarun. Speed goes to Cloak and Dagger. However, even though Cloak and Dagger are faster, Okarun can still catch up in speed, and Momo and Okarun still dominate in strength. So overall, Momo and Okarun take stats.
Arsenal & Abilities
This is where the most interesting part of this debate comes into play, but let’s quickly get their arsenals out of the way. While Cloak and Dagger had some rather interesting equipment to utilize with their flamethrower, gun, and Doc Ock’s arms, there’s no evidence to say that these are necessarily standard for Cloak and Dagger. On the other hand, Okarun’s Nanoskin armor did lend him some versatility given what can be formed out of it, but it had little use given Okarun’s limited imagination, especially compared to Dagger’s constructs. Momo’s bats could certainly throw Cloak and Dagger for a loop, but similar to Cloak and Dagger’s own non-standard equipment, there’s no evidence to say the bats are standard given Momo has only used them once before. Arsenal has no clear winner here.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about their abilities and how they compare to each other. Needless to say, both sides have very similar abilities. Both had ways to track each other down via Spiritual Awareness and Extrasensory Perception respectively, both also had ways to heal, defend themselves, and maneuver around the battlefield. A good amount of their abilities also cancel each other out, like Momo and Okarun being able to sense Cloak and Dagger’s own invisibility, while on the other hand Momo’s spiritual nullification wouldn’t matter since Cloak and Dagger are more biological.
Judging from the surface, Cloak and Dagger do seem to hold more variety in abilities, such as Dagger’s constructs, while Momo and Okarun’s are more unique in comparison, thanks to Momo’s psychic powers. But what really matters here is how their abilities counter each other. Momo’s Moe-Moe Tri Beam is a very useful ability against Cloak because of how useful it is against intangible beings and Dagger had nothing up her sleeve that would make her survive against Okarun’s strength in Turbo Granny form, like his All-Out.
There’s also the matter of Cloak not having an answer to Momo’s own Power Nullification, since he has been proven vulnerable to spiritual entrapment before. Another thing that Momo counters from Cloak is his Battlefield Removal via the Darkforce Dimension, since she has resisted a similar attack before from the Imotako Kur who could store things in another dimension. Another major resistance Momo and Okarun have is that they resist Cloak and Dagger’s life force manipulation. This is proven when they were swallowed by Acrobatic Silky, since their abilities are tied to both the spiritual and paranormal, they were able to resist their lifeforce being manipulated. This means that the Predator and Dagger’s light wouldn’t be effective against them.
A big factor here is that Momo and Okarun have far less exploitable weaknesses when compared to Marvel’s Twilight Duo. For instance, Momo and Okarun could simply tear Tyrone’s cloak away from him, leaving him powerless like when Molly Hayes did as such. Or simply blocking Dagger’s attacks with any sort of material they have nearby which would prove easy, given Momo’s telekinesis.
Another big factor when comparing their abilities is the actual usefulness of them. A good amount of Cloak and Dagger’s abilities, while lethal and effective, are rather situational or require caveats to even work, like with their resurrection, sensory nullification, Cloak’s Nightmare-Amped form, or their Swapped forms. While Dagger could certainly purify Okarun and strip him of his Turbo Granny form, given Dagger has purged Spiritual Influence in the past, she can only do it if Okarun is pinned down. But with Okarun’s superior strength and durability, it’s unlikely Dagger could get the chance to purify him before he breaks free. There’s also the matter of Okarun’s electrical form, which can help keep up with Cloak and Dagger’s natural speed, as well as delivering some devastating blows.
The comparison of abilities between the two is certainly an interesting one, but Momo and Okarun’s are much less restrictive and can reliably counter Cloak and Dagger’s own abilities that would give them the win. While Cloak and Dagger had a lot to pull from, in this debate, Uniqueness wins over Variety, giving the category to Momo and Okarun.
Tertiary Factors
When it comes to Experience, it’s no surprise Cloak and Dagger held the edge given they’ve been fighting crime on the streets of New York for over 10 years. But Experience isn’t everything, what this really comes down to is who the more strategic duo between the two are.
While Cloak and Dagger have really good team synergy, especially given they’ve outsmarted Spider-Man before, Momo and Okarun held the edge because of their smarter and more unorthodox approach to combat. Momo and Okarun have a history of coming up with the most complex of plans on the fly to win fights. One example being when Okarun was going up against the Brella Boy, a Yokai who relies on wind attacks. Okarun was able to figure out that Brella Boy mainly relies on said element and use it against him by using a heater to create a tornado that successfully trapped them.
Momo is just as much of a genius in combat, like when she used her knowledge of “worm suicide” against the Mongolian Death worm. But an important thing to note is that her strategies in the past have helped make up for her partner’s weaknesses. Like when they were against Mantis Shrimp, a Yokai who gets stronger underwater, somewhere Okarun in particular can’t use his Turbo Granny form due to Turbo Granny herself never learning to swim underwater. Momo was able to come up with a strategy to make up for that weakness, using her psychic powers to make him swim faster, like a fish on a line.
With Momo and Okarun’s combined combat intelligence, coupled with their durability advantage that will help them last longer, it’s only a matter of time before they come up with an unorthodox strategy to defeat the Darkness and Light duo. This is especially helpful given Momo and Okarun’s counters against them that they can inevitably figure out. So while Experience goes to Cloak and Dagger, Intelligence goes to Momo and Okarun.
Conclusion
“In this world soaked in darkness, I found a Sentimental Kind of Love.”
Advantages:
- Stronger and more durable
- Superior area of effect
- Have counters to many of Cloak and Dagger’s abilities like Life Force manipulation, Invisibility, Intangibility and BFR
- Have much fewer restrictions when it comes to their abilities
- Smarter and more tactical
- Momo resists BFR
- Less exploitable weaknesses
- Okarun’s electrical form can keep up with Cloak and Dagger’s speed…
- Okarun could resist being purified by Dagger’s daggers for awhile…
- On The Way and Otonoke
Disadvantages:
- Less Experienced
- Significantly less versatile
- …but are still slightly slower on their own
- …but it could theoretically still happen
- Nanoskin Armor doesn’t compare to Dagger’s constructs
- Twitter discourse
- Still aren’t together after 200+ chapters
It was a very fascinating debate between these two duos, but Momo and Okarun took the edge in several different ways. They were much stronger and more durable, meaning they could survive a lot of Cloak and Dagger’s most dangerous attacks and return the favor in a devastating way. Though Cloak and Dagger had ways to keep them on their toes, especially since they are the faster duo. But Momo and Okarun could match their speed given Okarun’s electrical form could help keep pace.
This goes into another factor of this debate, how their abilities compare. While Cloak and Dagger had a lot to pull from that could certainly overwhelm Momo and Okarun, this is a case where quality wins out over quantity. This mainly comes down to Momo and Okarun having less restrictions and caveats with their abilities compared to Cloak and Dagger’s more lethal, but ultimately situational abilities. Additionally, Momo and Okarun had more reliable counters against abilities that could give Cloak and Dagger the win.
For the final piece of this puzzle, there’s also the matter of each team’s combat intelligence, which Momo and Okarun had in spades. Given enough time as the fight progresses, which would certainly be a good while thanks to Momo and Okarun’s durability, the both of them will inevitably come up with an unorthodox strategy to score the win against Cloak and Dagger.
Cloak and Dagger were certainly no pushover for the Dandaduo and could certainly win in a fair amount of other scenarios, but Momo and Okarun’s strength, durability, more unique abilities, counters, and combat intelligence more often than not would make them triumph over the Darkness and Light duo. Cloak and Dagger tried to Darkforce their way to victory but against Momo and Okarun’s superior brawns, brains and counters they were simply DanDaDone for.
Cloak & Dagger
Stats
Starting with Cloak and Dagger, both of them have some decent feats on their own. The best feat they would scale to is when Wolverine knocked down Domina, who claimed they were strong enough to move mountains. This feat would get 1.6 Kilotons of TNT.
Now onto Momo and Okarun’s own raw power, their best feat physically comes from Momo using her psychic powers, in which she uses the mech’s arms to lift Vamola in kaiju form enveloped by Aira’s hair into the sky, spin it around, and slam it down creating a crater. With all of this, Momo and Okarun would be stronger. Even with the low end of Jiji’s feat, Momo and Okarun would be 6.15 times stronger than Cloak and Dagger. With the high end, it would be 14.55 times stronger. Momo and Okarun clearly take strength.
Next is speed. For Cloak and Dagger, Dagger’s light daggers can move fast enough to fly to space, which gets around Mach 3,444.
Next with Momo and Okarun, Okarun can travel through telephone wires as electricity to travel across the world. However, this would make Cloak and Dagger a little faster than Momo and Okarun. Speed goes to Cloak and Dagger.
So with this, Momo and Okarun take AP, and Cloak and Dagger take speed. However, even with Momo and Okarun being stronger, Cloak and Dagger are just not all about strength. Having the speed advantage is more useful to Cloak and Dagger to them as they are not really focused on strength but more so their speed, tactics, and abilities. With the speed advantage, Cloak and Dagger can land more of their abilities on Momo and Okarun than the other way around. So even with Momo and Okarun’s strength advantage, Cloak and Dagger take stats due to their speed advantage.
Arsenal & Abilities
The clash of powersets is gonna be the most interesting part of this debate but first let’s briefly go over arsenals. Nanoskin armor gives quite a surprising amount of versatility in what can be formed for combat but considering that Okarun isn’t exactly the most proficient in its use due to his limited imagination, it won’t be a game changer even if it helps even the playing field against Dagger’s lightforce constructs. Cloak and Dagger have an odd amount of gear themselves with flamethrowers, guns, and Otto Octavius’ cybernetic arms, but you could easily argue that a lot of this is pretty non-standard. Even taking it into consideration, Momo’s forcefields and telekinesis can deal with these ranged weapons and potentially handle the cybernetic arms, although having multiple metal hands at Cloak’s command would certainly take the Dandadan duo by surprise. She can also telekinetically control multiple metal bats to take Dagger by surprise but she’s certainly dodged faster. Arsenal has no clear winner here.
Onto the abilities proper now, we can assuredly say that Momo’s aura interaction and Dagger’s own light aura visibility and manipulation would be equalized here. They are similar enough to where you can play it fair and assume an equalized battle of abilities between them both. With that out of the way, neither side is truly slacking in terms of their versatility. Both duos have ways of detecting and locating each others’ presences, movement options that let them cover distance crazy fast, quick healing options, forcefields to protect themselves, and potential durability negation options altogether. Besides the abilities that match each other, they can counter each other’s abilities pretty well too. Cloak has no organs for Momo to interact with using her telekinesis and he can always teleport away to escape Momo’s clutches. Momo and Okarun can sense Dagger if she were to go invisible and can sense Cloak if he were to hide within the shadows. Momo’s spiritual nullification wouldn’t work on Cloak and Dagger since their powers are more based on their biology, something that Momo has yet to manipulate let alone nullify. Dagger’s light can also counter Okarun’s attempt at using his wire transportation as she can simply just send her light through them. Even with Okarun’s astral projection, he is still subject to getting sucked into Cloak’s darkness as seen in the past with Dr. Strange, and they certainly would be subject to a lot of the horror inside of the Darkforce Dimension, especially when they come across the Predator. Of course, both Momo and Okarun are resistant to having their lifeforces sucked out of them, meaning that both the Predator and Dagger’s light would be unable to manipulate their life forces to the point of killing them.
Resurrection would take too long to pull off, unleashing Cloak’s darkness to a city-wide extent would need an especially long period of time, and an especially big issue with Cloak’s darkness is that it can be easy to escape if you flail around enough or attack the Predator with a strong enough concentrated light/energy based attack (which Momo’s Moe Moe Tri-Beam can precisely do). This isn’t even accounting for the fact that the Tri-Beam can flat out hit and kill intangible beings like Cloak and the fact that Momo can force her way out of the Darkforce Dimension through her own psychic abilities. While these are both solid counters to Cloak’s abilities, Cloak can easily dodge the Moe-Moe Tri Beam given that he has the speed advantage, and if exposure to Darkforce energy has proven anything in the past, a target only needs to be inside the darkness for a few seconds in order to be completely incapacitated. Momo can surely resist the nightmares that form around her initially but seeing as how she can fall to the mind manipulation of more powerful creatures, the Predator would prove to be especially difficult as his magic output and eons of experience would give him nightmare inducement too strong for Momo to overcome. Her soul would also be chilled all the same as her limbs would begin to feel numb, and while she can see auras even without opening her eyes, no auras exist in the vast darkness of the dimension until the Darkforce’s monsters come to fight her. Likewise, Okarun would be going through the same effects, arguably getting harder due to lacking any resistance to mind manipulation and all that. Now with all that said, Cloak can certainly incapacitate the duo but let’s not forget about Dagger.
Unlike Cloak, she lacks any form of intangibility to prevent herself from being hit by physical attacks such as Okarun’s All-Out move or any of Momo’s physical attacks and telekinesis. However, for what she lacks in intangibility she makes up for with her general agility and physical speed, and she is exceptional at hand-to-hand combat so she can outmaneuver the duo’s strikes. Her light is extremely versatile as it bends to her will to let her do a lot of useful things against Momo and Okarun. She can blind them, use her light to grab targets like how Momo can with her telekinesis, use her aforementioned light constructs to surprise attack her foes, instinctively let out light attacks when caught off guard, pass her light from one target to another if they’re close enough to each other, and throw her especially deadly light daggers. No matter how evil or good a target is, they will be subject to durability negation of the knives as its biophysical shock reaction will guarantee a temporary paralysis and numbing cold inside of their bodies even on superhumans, albeit it can subside faster depending on how well the opponent can recuperate. Momo and Okarun haven’t been able to resist anything like this in the past, and Momo definitely has no counter to the daggers bypassing her forcefields like how it could bypass Doom’s forcefields in the past.
Since Cloak and Dagger still have a slight speed advantage, Dagger can throw out knives faster than the Dandaduo could react at a more consistent rate, which is especially tricky given how the daggers can constantly hone in on their targets which will make it very difficult for Dandaduo to dodge for a prolonged period of time, especially when she can summon multiple knives all at once to go after a single target. Even more common weaknesses like the daggers being blocked by regular materials wouldn’t be helping Dandaduo all that much when they also have to worry about Cloak’s onslaught. The only other big question we have to answer now is if and how purification would work on someone like Momo and Okarun, to which we say, possibly. Well, to Okarun at least, we can theoretically say that since Dagger’s light has purged people of evil influences in the past, then Dagger could technically remove Okarun’s Turbo Granny powers and leave one half of the Dandaduo powerless. Granted, Turbo Granny’s powers aren’t the same as more physical impairments like vampirism or radiation sickness as it’s more spiritual in nature, but given how it has purged spiritual influence in the past, then it isn’t entirely impossible. Either way, Dagger’s light would certainly work on one of the Dandaduo’s trump cards and shut down that option for good. While Turbo Granny’s luck would be especially useful in escaping otherwise impossible situations, that luck goes both ways, so eventually Dagger will be able to purify Turbo Granny with her light, especially if she is flashing her living light across the battlefield so often.
From that point on, Cloak would be able to take out the duo by subjecting them to nightmares beyond comprehension for who knows how long or Dagger could fight long enough to be empowered by her light and simply burn the insides of the duo with her blazing daggers. A lot of their moves may have underlying weaknesses but more often than not, it’s safe to say that Cloak and Dagger take the arsenal and abilities category by a landslide.
Tertiary Factors
The final piece of the puzzle is tertiary factors. When it comes to Intelligence, Momo and Okarun do have a slight edge, making more unconventional battle plans in the heat of the moment such as against the Serponian Amalgamate or ’Brella Boy. However Cloak and Dagger are no slouches in this area as seen in their battles with foes such as Mr Negative and Spider-Man, meaning that they aren’t completely outshone in this area.
Compare that to the difference in experience however and the advantage soon becomes clear. Momo and Okarun have been fighting through supernatural activity from the coast of Japan to the very stars themselves for a few months at most, impressive but a drop in the bucket compared to Cloak and Dagger having over a decade of experience going against everything from petty thugs, to cults across the world to genocidal death robots.
This edge in experience also leads to them having a major edge in teamwork, they’ve been with each other since they’ve started and barring small breaks in between have almost never left the other’s sides. Whilst Momo & Okarun do clearly cherish each other deeply they simply haven’t been together as long as C&D have. Overall whilst Momo and Okarun’s intellect made them a terrifying combination to behold, the twilight duo edges in teamwork and experience should be enough to grant them this category.
Conclusion
“Through it all they stayed together, even when they wanted to run away.”
Advantages:
- Faster
- Intangibility makes them a pain to hit
- Have some potential win conditions in spite of being weaker, like BFR and light daggers
- Dagger could certainly Purify Okarun robbing him of his powers…
- More Versatile
- Much more experienced
- Better mobility through teleportation
- Actually together lmfao
- Marvel Rivals
Disadvantages:
- Weaker and less durable
- A good amount of their abilities are too situational
- Darkforce Dimension wouldn’t work on Momo
- …but she needs to pin down Okarun to make it work
- Not as combat intelligent
- Cut from UMvC3. Look it up!
- Rivals stole Cloak’s legs : (
All in all, this was an extremely close debate between 2 duos who’ve fought through more than what most couples could even dream off but the victor is clear here. Cloak and Dagger were faster, meaning that although the Dandaduo’s strength edge was quite daunting they had all the means necessary to avoid a killing blow and strike back just as hard.
The most major factor in the debate however was their abilities.Tandy and Tyrone simply had many more to pull from, many of which could end the fight instantly, such as paralysis and BFR. Combine this with their own counters like Dagger purifying Okarun or TG herself, forcing him out of the wires through her living light or just bypassing Momo’s forcefields. These aren’t the only wincons possible either as Cloak’s BFR, illusions and the creatures hiding in his shadows could all spell the end for the Dandaduo if given the opportunity leading to Cloak and Dagger taking this category.
And finally whilst Momo and Okarun have been portrayed as much more crafty and quick-witted, they simply haven’t been doing this for long especially when compared to Cloak and Dagger fighting against the world’s horrors for over 10 years. This meant that even with Momokarun’s smarts they would likely be unable to devise a plan that could really surprise New York’s Brightest Light and Darkest Shadow.
Momo and Okarun were strong, smart and incredibly versatile combatants and could surely score a few victories if this fight were to be done 100 times. But Cloak and Dagger’s superior speed, abilities, experience and wincons were more than enough to push through against Kamigoe’s Paranormal Enthusiasts. Momo and Okarun made this a marvellous duel but when they tried to light the path to victory, they were simply overshadowed.
Final Tally
Momo & Okarun (6) – Aggra, Cyber, KrisWarlock, Landon1195, Riley, Trashy
Cloak & Dagger (4) – Koopakirby, Saul, The Kagurabachi, Toxin
Undecided (1) – Magpie
One More Thing…
As you may or may not know, some time ago, shortly after we posted our Catwoman VS Black Cat bonus blog, we posted a poll to the Official DEATH BATTLE! Discord, and had community members vote from an assortment of options on which Marvel VS DC fight they would like to see us tackle next as a bonus blog.
Now that some time has passed, we will be announcing the winners of that poll! That’s right, “winners” plural. We’re going to be working on blogs for both the highest voted match overall, and the highest voted rematch option from the poll – that is to say a reevaluation of a fight that DEATH BATTLE! has already covered in the past. Two blogs for the price of one, which will be released whenever work on them is finished.
What are those two matches, you ask? Well, without further delay…
