Legends have been passed down through the millennia of Atlantis, the supposed lost underwater utopia sought after by surface dwellers who seek to witness and possibly harness these great advancements themselves. Those lucky enough to discover such a locale must be wary though; if one proves themselves to be a threat, they may just incur the wrath of DC and Marvel’s premier aquatic-themed superheroes – born to both the land and the sea, these two have dedicated their lives to protecting their homes from any threat, but only one of them can truly lay their claim to the throne as the undisputed king of Atlantis in a battle to the death.
Aquaman, the King of the Seven Seas. Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Death Battle’s fifth season will begin with a trip to the fabled kingdom of legend itself to witness these two half-human, half-Atlantean champions send waves throughout the oceans of the world and prove their might against the other by any means necessary in the next chapter of this long-running rivalry between the two titans of superhero media. Will DC’s Dweller in the Depths and Aquatic Ace emerge victorious and send his opponent to be devoured by the beasts below, or be supplanted by the savage strength of Marvel’s first mutant and the Emperor of the Deep himself?
Backstory
Aquaman
“I am AQUAMAN– the king of the seven seas. This is my birthright. This is my responsibility. And I will embrace it.”
Aquaman aka Arthur Curry was born the the son of Atlanna, a Princess from Atlantis. She was banished from Atlantis due to the fact she had a particular interest in the surface world and and those people from Atlantis aren’t really found of the surface dwellers. When she got to the surface she eventually met a normal human – Tom Curry, a lighthouse keeper in Maine. Both Atlanna and Tom would meet after a terrible storm. Curry found Atlanna washed up on the shore by waves and rescues her before she can be hurt. Both Curry and Atlanna made the lighthouse their home and over time the pair would develop an extremely strong bond. Eventually the two would fall in love and eventually have a child – Arthur. Tom Curry that would quickly lead to a sentimental relationship when Arthur was born. Although Curry always knew there was more to his wife, he’d never ask her about her origins. By the age of two something strange happened to Arthur – he was playing underwater for an hour without drowning which would be impossible by any ordinary person.
However it was several years late when both Tom and Arthur would find out the truth about Atlanna. She told Arthur/Tom that she came from the learn the lost continent of Atlantis. Sadly Atlanna was on her deathbed when she was telling Arthur/Tom this but she did reveal to Arthur that he had the same skills as she did – increased strength, durability, speed and the power to communicate and control marine life.
After his wife’s death, Arthur’s father decided to train young Arthur both physically and mentally to control his unique powers. Arthur was also taught mortality by his father Tom he truly believed that eventually he would become the King of the Seven Seas and the savior of the oceans. Eventually his father also passed away and Arthur decided to leave his Later, after his father’s death, Arthur Curry would leave the lighthouse which had been a home to him and his home in the lighthouse in order to find his true calling where he would later adopt his superhero moniker – the Aquaman.
Namor
“Whoever is guilty of such callous disdain for the denizens of the deep shall suffer at the hands of the Sub-Mariner! THIS I SWEAR!“
Namor McKenzie(we aren’t kidding, that is his real name), was born within the mystical underwater utopia of Atlantis, located off of the Antarctic coast. His mother was the Princess Fen, daughter of Emperor Thakorr. His father was Leonard McKenzie, a Captain on the icebreaker ship Oracle. The two met after Fen was sent to spy upon the humans who had unknowingly entered Atlantean territory. When Fen did not return, having fallen in love with Leonard, a squadron of Atlantean entered and invaded, slaying the unfortunate sea captain. The hybrid offspring of this tragic love would soon be known as Namor, the Sub-Mariner.
As time passed, Namor, the heir to the throne, would soon interact with the second half of his genome, as he came upon the surface world. Befriending the human police officer Betty Dean, Namor would find himself allying with the humans against the Nazis during World War II, fighting alongside the likes of Captain America, Bucky Barnes, and the Human Torch(not that one.)
Some time later, Namor became injured and an amnesiac. Eventually regaining his memory in a Fantastic Four comic, he would return to his home under the waves. However, Atlantis had been destroyed by nuclear testing, and its people had been scattered to the waves. Furious and betrayed, Namor sought revenge upon the surface dwellers, and he soon set his sights on conquering those who had destroyed his home. And so Namor took on his second moniker: The Avenging Son.
Powers
Aquaman
Being half human and half Atlantean, Aquaman possesses strength, speed, durability and senses above that of a normal human and even a normal Atlantean, due to his bloodline status. The reason stated in comics is due to their adaption to underwater living. Atlanteans also possess a regenerative healing factor. During his fight with the Dead Sea King he got impaled in multiple places clean through and yet regenerated from it. Bullets and ranged weapons won’t do much to him as he will simply regenerate. He regenerates faster when in the water via water rejuvenation.
Magic
Aquaman is able to manipulate magic through his trident. Usually when Arthur uses his magic – his eyes will start to glow gold. He is resistant to magical attacks (can also block them) as well as manipulate magic through various ways such as:
Eldritch Blast: He is capable of combining his power with his trident in order to create an massive explosion that is fully capable of taking out an Atlantean fortresses. Through his trident Arthur can discharge potent blasts of raw esoteric power which can put down even the most savvy of magic practitioners.
Force Field: He is able to create barriers of energy in order to protect himself
Physical Augmentation: He is capable of augmenting his physical strength through the use of magic.
Telepathy
Did you also know that Aquaman is an extremely skilled telepath. He has mainly used his telepathy skills in Pre New 52 but there’s no reason not to include it. His Telepathy while not being as impressive as Martian Manhunter is still pretty impressive. Using just his telepathy he managed to staff a being as powerful as the Swamp Thing – which you can see in the image. He dominated the All Knowing Dragon telepathically. Fought in a Telepathic battle with the a being known as Kordax and eventually got the creature to kill itself. Get this, one time Aquaman’s telepathy was so strong it even managed to dominate an A.I., and considering how advanced A.I.s can be, that’s no small feat. Aquaman was even able to read the mind of the Martian Manhunter when he did not want him to.
Considering that MM is one of the strongest telepaths in the DC Universe. While Aquaman tends to not do this he can control non sea life with his telepathy. Telepathically commands a Millennium Giant to release Superman. Aquaman’s controlling telepathy is so strong that even demons will submit to his will.
Aquaman can also control other animals such as birds and can even control animals/creatures that are dead. Aquaman being a telepath also possess psychic resistances as he can block any telepath from entering his mind. He can also use his telepathic skills to escape mind control
As well as use it to break out of hallucinations, Aquaman is also able to break out of hypnotism, for example he does so in his encounter with a being known as Maxima. Aquaman can also connect to people telepathically and talk to them. Aquaman’s telepathic ability is extremely powerful being able to not only control people but also resist telepathic attack but you know the most important part of Aquaman’s telepathically that i have failed to mention – his ability to control sea life.
Sea Life
Aquaman’s most famous and recognizable ability is that he can control sea life. He can control any number of creatures though bigger creatures are more taxing to him. Aquaman has controlled many sea creatures including:
- Fish
- Angler Fish
- Extremely deadly Piranhas
- Sharks
- Dolphins
- Squids
- Whales
- Jellyfish
- Schools of Fish
- Mythical Beings
- Sea Serpents
- Crowns of Thorns
- Swordfish
- The Kraken
- Flying Whales
- Plankton
- Entire Armies of Sea Creatures
- Zombie Sea Life (Due to being a Black Lantern at one point)
Topo
Perhaps the most deadly creature Aquaman can summon (he first summoned it in the Dead King Arc), this Cthulhu monstrosity Topo can survive Missile Attacks and can wipe out entire Submarine units with ease and has telepathic abilities but due to the beast’s sheer size and power it can be taxing for Aquaman to summon and control but he has shown decent control over it as been shown. Secretly though it just wants a hug.
Namor
Mutant/Atlantean Physiology
Namor’s is a unique hybrid of a Atlantean and Mutant which has earned up the title of Marvel’s Mutant. Due to being a hybrid of human and Atlantean DNA, he has superhuman strength, speed, durability, reflexes, and senses.
His Mutant/Atlantean Physiology also allow him to live much longer then the regular person. Namor can breathe indefinitely underwater due to having gills located behind his ears. Unlike most Atlanteans, however, Namor can also breathe on land indefinitely as well. He is also able to spray water from his skin in case he ends up being set on fire.
His final trait of his natural Mutant/Atlantean body is his Aquatic Healing. Basically Namor has a healing factor that allows him to easily heal damaged tissue faster than a human or Atlantean, but this ability has his limits especially when he is completely dry or out of water.
Flight
Namor’s mutant ability is that he posses wings on both sides of his ankles, giving him the ability to fly. It is not stated how fast that Namor can fly but he has been compared to a military aircraft, so it’s safe to assume he can fly faster then Mach 2.35. These wings are also able to carry a 50-ton anchor on them without loss of speed.
Aquatic Telepathy
Like Aquaman, Namor can also telepathy communicate with all forms of Marine Life as well as fellow Atlanteans and even humanity. He can summon a vast number of marine life in order to aid him at his side including fish, octopus, sharks, whales and even a certain creature called Giganto.
Giganto
Not to be outdone by his blonde counterpart, Namor also has a gigantic beast from the depths he can call upon. The massive proto-whale Giganto (or as we like to call him, Pinocchio’s Nightmare) dwarfs entire buildings with his sheer bulk. This colossal cetacean is tough enough to tank atomic blasts, strong enough to level docks and buildings, and can shoot water from his blowhole. The downside is, it’s really, really ugly.
Weaponry
Aquaman
Neptune’s Trident
This is his main trident that he has used, while not as strong as his Poseidon Trident – it is still an extremely formidable weapon as he can easily pierce through the eye of Darkseid as well as shatter the ice from Graves (keep in mind, Superman’s heat vision was unable to shatter Graves’ ice). Neptune’s Trident is also capable of electrokinesis and blocking magical attacks.
Poseidon’s Trident
This is his new trident that he obtained in the New 52. When Aquaman gained the trident he was also gained new powers which will be explained later. When it’s in its sword form, Aquaman need only will it to become a trident and it stretches out to become the trident:
Poseidon’s Trident has extreme magical resistance and can easily block magical blasts. Aquaman’s tridents are also resistant to electricity and can absorb it. They can also absorb radiation as well as energy blasts.
Elemental Powers
With his new trident, Aquaman can now use elemental powers. For example, he can manipulate ice; during a fight with an Atlantean soldier, Aquaman froze him up to his neck. He can also create ice stalagmites. In the Young Justice verse. Aquaman’s trident also had slight pyrokinetic powers in a sense that it can produce heat.
Poseidon’s Trident also gives Aquaman aerokinetic abilities, as with it Aquaman can control storms and winds in order to turn the tide of battle. Aquaman also possesses geokinetic powers with Poseidon’s Trident, as in order to save some people he summoned giant pillars of rock. But the most powerful ability that the trident has is electrokinesis. Aquaman can use electricity in two different ways: he can summon lightning from the sky to strike down his enemies, as well as channel electricity and fire it from his trident.
Teleportation
Along with elemental powers, Aquaman can use his trident to teleport all around the world; for example, in this scene he teleported to Missouri to the Amazon. He can use his trident’s teleporting powers to travel to other worlds.
Hook Hand/Cybernetic Hand
During an incident where Aquaman’s left hand was eaten by piranhas he got a replacement hand in the form of a hook hand. Eventually STAR Labs created a prosthetic that is multifunctional. It’s main weapon is a retractable harpoon, could be drawn into its casing to be temporarily replaced with a prosthetic hand. The Harpoon can be used as a grappling hook to get to higher places. The Harpoon itself can support 2 tons without breaking. It can even spin at high speeds and become a drill – easily able to drill through solid rock. It can even distribute a power electrical charge to the enemy. The Hook Hand can also entangle enemies. Eventually Arthur gained a new prosthetic hand that functioned as his normal hand does but it also has a unique feature is that it can morph into any blunt weapon such as a shield and a mace.
Water Hand
After he lost his metal hand he was given a new water based on by the Lady of the Lake. It is magical and gives him brand new abilities.
Hydrokinesis: With the Water Hand, Aquaman can freely manipulate the water. Aquaman can manipulate vast amounts of water in various ways. He can fire scalding water jets of extreme pressure, and split tidal waves in half as well as control them.
Namor
Namor has used plenty of weapons before, from swords to spears (though generally he prefers hand to hand fighting) but these are the weapons/items he uses the most.
Neptune’s Trident
When Poseidon left the Atlanteans he left a copy of his trident so that it would be given to the Atlantean Ruler upon his departure. This trident eventually come into the possession of Namor, the current ruler of Atlantis. Neptune’s Trident is in part made of Enchanted Adamantine Metal. This Trident can do many things but Namor tends not to do them out of fear of what the trident is capable of.
- Water Manipulation – Namor with Neptune’s Trident is able to control any body of water, create water elementals, speed ships and other water vehicles with water. He can also summon waves of water to propel him at great speeds, and create earthquakes by increasing water pressure.
- Weather Manipulation – Namor is able to manipulate the weather including create fogs and storms of high intensity
- Mystic Beams – Namor can fire mystical beams from the trident in order to hurt his enemies at a distance
- Mystic Formation – He is able to transform objects into other objects though they have to be willing or it won’t work.
Horn of Proteus
Much his adversary, Namor can summon sea life to do his bidding. In a pinch, he’s summoned an orca to eat this poor schmuck, and used an army of fish to find the Cosmic Cube. He also has the Horn of Proteus, an ancient artifact that allows Namor to control undersea life. Kinda redundant considering that he already has the whole ‘aquatic telepathy’ thing. In moments, he can summon an army of powerful undersea creatures to his side.
Atlantean Armor
While Namor tends to go shirtless into battle, he can wear extra armor at times. It isn’t certain how much this increases his durability but it does look really cool.
Trojan Whales
This was too ridiculous not to mention.

Weaknesses
Aquaman
Aquaman can only last so long outside of the water, before his abilities will start to weaken. The time-frame within which he usually suffers adverse effects is typically around an hour.
Namor
Namor suffers from the Vegeta Syndrome in that he is extremely arrogant and has a fair tendency to job to a lot of people he should reasonably beat. He tends to not be the type to cheat, preferring a fair fight above all else. While his flight ability is amazing, if someone damages his ankle wings, it damages his ability to fly.
He also has a similar weakness to Aquaman in that when not exposed to water, many of Namor’s superhuman abilities decrease to the point that he only has a fraction of his power. What doesn’t help this is that he tends to suffer from oxygen imbalance, which happens when he remains too long in either water or air. This results in manic-depressive mood swings which causes him to become angry very easily (which then causes him to not think clearly and logically). This has given him a critical flaw: if he is hit in the head at a certain area then he will fall unconscious; even a normal man with a lead pipe is able to do this. His final weaknesses is that if he enters polluted waters, his abilities will start to diminish.
Summary
Aquaman
“I’ve worked hard to earn the respect and trust of every living creature beneath the waves — and I take my job very seriously… so get this through your head, punk… I’m Aquaman, King of the Seven Seas… and I’m the BEST!”

Aquaman wins. Belay professionalism this one time.
The Nerd-Bot
Hello folks! The Nerd-Bot here! Thanks to my pal Strunton, who’s now an official member of the Death Battle Research team, for putting in a good word for me. I’ve always wanted to be a part of these things, and now I get the chance to! (Maybe when Cutie Honey, Ragna, or Vandal Savage shows up, I can come back.)
I… have a very conflicting opinion on this fight happening. On the one hand, it’s the second Marvel VS DC fight in a row, and the second time Marvel VS DC was the season premier. Kinda wish the fight ended up being Kisame VS Tier Harribel. On the other hand, it’s an Aquaman fight, and I love me some Arthur Curry. Even before the Aquaman movie, he was always one of my favorite Justice League members. Whether a stoic badass in the Animated Series, or an over the top ham in the Brave and the Bold, Aquaman always stood out to me. But enough gushing over my favorite comic book king(sorry Thor and T’Challa), who is going to win this one? Well… I feel that the true King of Atlantis, Aquaman, is going to take the victory.
Given that both characters are similar, this fight could be considered even. However, Aquaman edges out in pretty much every single category. While Namor has more direct feats, the opponents Aquaman scales to are far faster, stronger, and tougher. Arthur has fought three of the Justice League’s biggest heavy hitters, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter. On the other hand, Namor has fought the likes of The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel. While these opponents are by no means weak, their power is generally accepted to be not as powerful as DC’s Big Three. Similarly, Aquaman’s feats of mental control are more powerful than what Namor’s shown. While the Avenging Son has impressive feats of mental resistance, meaning he could maybe resist a Mind Crush from Aquaman, the same can’t be said for his troops, meaning that Arthur can turn his own forces against him. Also, Aquaman’s arsenal is much better than Namor’s just to add insult to injury.
And for the most damning weakness of all…
Aquaman can go grab lunch like a normal person, while Namor gets the military on his ass when he tries to grab a bagel.
In the end, the Imperius Rex is gonna get Imperius Wrecked.
Malcolm Belmont
Welp, there is a certain meme in the community i am in. Malcolm Belmont really wants to see Aquaman vs Namor as a DEATH BATTLE and now, it’s finally happened
This is the matchup i have been waiting for since DEATH BATTLE has started and i am really glad that it’s finally happened. And no despite Aquaman being my second favourite comic book character of all time besides Dick Grayson – I will try and be as unbiased as possible when going into my thoughts and opinions on this matchup. Buuuuuuuuuuuuttttt….
Aquaman wins.
Okay, Okay let’s dial it down a bit. In my own personal opinion based on the research I have conducted regarding this fight, I legit think that Aquaman would end up winning this bout but I know the question is – why would he win.
Well, let’s go over Strength which comes down to one simple fact – does Aquaman scale to DC Beings such as Superman, Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter – well the simple answer is yes – Aquaman absolutely scales to the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter for one simple reason – he has fought all three of them on multiple occasions and has shown to hurt/damage them (while i don’t think he has strong as Superman overall i do think he scales to him as he has shown being able to hurt them with brute physical force alone unlike say Batman who has to rely on his gadgets and Kryptonite to hurt Superman). Namor’s strength is consistent at best – sometimes he can wrestle with the likes of the Hulk and the Thing and sometimes he has trouble with street level characters like Captain America. Even if we scale Namor’s strength to the Hulk’s – it’s not really a fair comparison as the Hulk is also extremely inconsistent with his durability due to the fact that his durability changes with how angry he gets but let’s just assume that he would scale to the Hulk. Even then – Aquaman would still beat Namor in strength because Superman, Wonder Woman outclass the Hulk in strength and durability and the fact that Aquaman scales puts his strength higher than Namor’s. Even when discussing direct feats i still think Aquaman has the edge in this category – both have ocean lifting feats which while impressive – keep in mind Aquaman during his fight with the Dead King not only lifted an ocean liner under pressurized water but also threw it at the Dead King (with some weighing over 50,000 tons) and that’s not his most impressive feat.
During his battle against the Trench he moved the Oceanic plates, he did this:
Aquaman moves and pushed a tectonic plate through sheer physical force alone. A tectonic plates weigh an average of forty sextillion, seven hundred quintillion kilograms, or 40,700,000,000,000,000,000 metric tons. Even if he was pushing it done – he would still need that level of strength in order to move the tectonic plate (also thanks to Gen Lamour for that analysis and number) which is more impressive than anything Namor has done. So yeah Aquaman should definitely win the strength category.
That alone should put Aquaman’s strength ahead of whatever Namor’s got. So yeah in terms of strength – Aquaman’s got this in the bag.
What about Speed then, does Namor have a fairer chance. Well kinda but also not really. Aquaman – well we do know that he has shown being able to keep up with Barry Allen aka the Flash who is Massively Faster Than Light in terms of speed – even if we ignore the fact that he has kept up with the likes of Barry Allen. He has also kept up with the likes of Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter and most important of all – Superman. Aquaman has also reacted and dodged Superman’s Heat Vision which even the Flash has difficulty dodging at time. He even blitzed Post Flashpoint Wonder Woman who has shown Massively Faster than Light Speed. So scaling him to the other DC Heroes that should put his speed at Massively Faster than Light. What about Namor then, well he speed-blitzed Iron Man which while impressive considering Iron Man’s own speed – he’s at least Sub-Relativistic or FTL depending on who you ask. I still think that Iron Man’s speed is nowhere near the close to Wonder Woman or Superman’s speed. So if we factor in scaling then Aquaman has the edge in speed. What about direct feats then, well – Namor has caught up to the Human Torch who based on a certain calc by the Outskirts Battledome – moves over 9000 times the speed of sound which puts his speed at around Sub-Relativistic which Namor would scale to. Aquaman has once travelled Pre-52 Aquaman swam 10,000 feet per second. I would say Namor has shown faster speed in the comics but Aquaman scales to characters a lot faster than the likes of the Human Torch and Iron Man so i still say he has the edge
What about Durability – well this is easy. Aquaman has tanked hits from Superman, Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman and Lobo without any of them indicating that they held back significantly from their attacks. Even ignoring scaling – both have suffered falls from orbit and gotten up with little to no damage from it bit i would say Aquaman still has edge but Namor’s durability is impressive due – having tanked hits from the Hulk.
What about weaponry – well this is a tricky one in a sense. When comparing their tridents – they honestly seem fairly equal with both of their main tridents being able to manipulate water to suit their ends as well as have some magical enchantments but it should be noted that both has magical resistances meaning that if Aquaman and Namor fired magical blasts of energy at each other, it’s extremely likely that they would cancel each other out. In terms of tridents i would say they are fairly equal but factoring in other weapons – I would say Aquaman definitely has the edge not only in the hook hand which is an extremely useful tool of his but his water hand which can manipulate the entire oceans to the user’s will as well as manipulate water in a person’s body. So if they end up including the hook and water hands then i would say Aquaman has the win but with just Tridents then i would say they are about Equal
Now what about Telepathy – well Namor’s telepathic skills are certainly great – they simply don’t compare to Aquaman who is one of the greatest telepaths in the DC Universe and has been shown numerous times to be on Martian Manhunter’s level – Aquaman is easily able to shut someone’s mind down in a second. Secondly when concerning fish i would say that Aquaman has greater control than Namor as not only has Aquaman used this ability more often then Namor but the general creatures that he summons like good old Topo are greater than the creatures that Namor can manipulate. I know people have argued – Namor could telepathically manipulate Aquaman – well i disagree with this notion as not only has Aquaman has telepathically beaten characters such as the Martian Manhunter and his main rival Malefic so it would be extremely difficult for Namor to telepathically manipulate him. I think Aquaman has the edge in this category.
What about experience, intelligence, etc. In terms of experience – Namor definitely wins as he has been around a lot longer then Arthur but at the same time i still think in terms of intelligence they are fairly equal with Namor may having the edge slightly but not being enough to really make a difference. They are both extremely intelligent individuals and i don’t see it being that much of a massive decider in this fight.
Now comes to the big ones and the reason why i think that Aquaman wins this for sure – weaknesses. While Aquaman has a fairly bad weaknesses in terms of the fact if he stays in dry land for too long his power weakens but at the same time – this happens at least an hour without any water supply on him so it’s not like it happens instantly. Namor on the other hand, oh boy has a lot of damning weaknesses that absolutely just cripple him. While in combat Namor is extremely arrogant and consistently underestimates his foes. His main factor over Aquaman – his flight can easily get nullified if someone damages his ankle wings. His lack of water weaknesses is much more crippling then Aquaman’s . He suffers from extreme oxygen imbalance which happens when he remains too long in either water or air, resulting in manic-depressive mood swings which causes him to become angry very easily (which then causes him to not think clearly and logically). He has a major weaknesses that if he is conked on the head – it can knock him into unconsciousness (a lead pipe was able to do this) and even if the water is slightly polluted – his powers drain. As you can clearly see from my listing, Namor has a lot and i repeat A LOT of weaknesses which most if not all of them Aquaman can easily exploit. He can damage the ankle wings in order to make sure that Namor stops flying. He can mock/taunt Namor into becoming more reckless and arrogant (which tends to be Namor’s downfall in fights) he can swim Namor to a more polluted area to weaken his powers – hell just conking him on the head will knock him out. These weaknesses are too crippling and too exploitable compared to what, Aquaman’s one real weaknesses which while bad isn’t nearly has crippling as Namor’s many many faults and weaknesses.
In conclusion i believe that while they may be equals in terms of trident, intelligence and Namor edging out in experience – Aquaman is overall stronger, faster, more durable, and Namor’s weaknesses absolutely cripple him in this fight especially against a strong opponent such as Aquaman. They may be similar in powers and origin but i think that Aquaman edges out on Namor by quite a bit. Looks like Arthur will be the true king of the sea.
Thank you very much for reading my long verdict and i will see you all later, peace.
